My Last Fling of 2016

raphael

Raphael’s Fling; The Darcy Brothers #2 (Series)
by Alix Nichols (Author)

A charming, heartfelt read told in first person that I couldn’t put down once I picked it up.

Mia is pursing her doctorate degree in Paris, but she still works to pay the bills. She never intended to begin a relationship, actually that was the last thing she ever wanted to do, her studies took up most of her free time, but somehow she ended up deep in an affair with her boss. Well, not technically her boss, but the CEO of the company, so the big, big, BIG boss. Raphael d’Arcy himself.

Not only has she broken her mother’s rule to procreate before marriage (her mother is a pastor), okay to be honest Mia broke that rule years ago, but what I’m talking about is her own rule of sleeping with someone she works with. Mia promised she’d never have sex with someone from work. So what is she doing and more importantly why couldn’t she stop?

Why did Raphael have to be so sexy? So charming? So handsome? Just so Raphael?

She is going to break it off. She really is. She knew it would never last. His so-called “relationships” never did. She hated being a dirty secret. Well maybe not the dirty part that was actually nice. So, maybe next week she’d have the willpower to call it quits. But right now with Raphael and all the dirty thoughts running around in her head next week sounded like a much better idea. Yeah.

Raphael’s Fling was a fun read. It had twists and turns which is why once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down. Mia suffered from the same angst and insecurities every woman does, even if we weren’t sleeping with the boss. Even Raphael was relatable. He wasn’t over the top and didn’t make grand gestures that were out of character. Actually I loved that they both moved at their own pace and never broke character to make outlandish gestures.

To some their romance may have seemed subtle, but it was in the small things that Raphael did, that Mia didn’t always notice at first herself, that made the story romantic. At one point, Mia sat in retrospect and realized that Raphael had ruined her for every other man because of those little things. He always seemed to know when she was unhappy or upset. He also knew the things that made her excited and what she liked. He took the time to take an interest in her dissertation, her interests. For in those small things he made grand gestures of love. That made my heart melt.

This was the second book in this series and I didn’t read the first, yet. I am hoping to pick it up in the new year. However, I didn’t feel lost or like I’d missed anything. If you are like me and also haven’t read the first book, but want to dive right into Raphael’s Fling you shouldn’t have any trouble.  Just a heads up there is a third book in the works which will be about the youngest brother, but I don’t believe a publication date has been set yet.

This is my final review for 2016. To everyone I wish a Happy New Year and many happy blessings!

ego-maniac

Egomaniac

A new standalone novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Vi Keeland

The night I met Drew Jagger, he’d just broken into my new Park Avenue office.
I dialed 9-1-1 before proceeding to attack him with my fancy new Krav Maga skills.
He quickly restrained me, then chuckled, finding my attempted assault amusing.

Of course, my intruder had to be arrogant.
Only, turned out, he wasn’t an intruder at all.

Drew was the rightful occupant of my new office.  He’d been on vacation while his posh space was renovated.
Which was how a scammer got away with leasing me office space that wasn’t really available for rent.
I was swindled out of ten grand.

The next day, after hours at the police station, Drew took pity on me and made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.  In exchange for answering his phones while his secretary was out, he’d let me stay until I found a new place.
I probably should have acted grateful and kept my mouth shut when I overheard the advice he was spewing to his clients.  But I couldn’t help giving him a piece of my mind.
I never expected my body to react every time we argued.  Especially when that was all we seemed to be able to do.

The two of us were complete opposites. Drew was a bitter, angry, gorgeous-as-all-hell, destroyer of relationships.  And my job was to help people save their marriages.
The only thing the two of us had in common was the space we were sharing.
And an attraction that was getting harder to deny by the day.

fever-song

Feversong (Fever #9)

#1 New York Times bestselling author Karen Marie Moning returns with the epic conclusion to her pulse-pounding Fever series, where a world thrown into chaos grows more treacherous at every turn. As Mac, Barrons, Ryodan, and Jada struggle to restore control, enemies become allies, right and wrong cease to exist, and the lines between life and death, lust and love, disappear completely.

Black holes loom menacingly over Dublin, threatening to destroy the Earth. Yet the greatest danger is the one MacKayla Lane has unleashed from within: the Sinsar Dubh—a sentient book of unthinkable evil—has possessed her body and will stop at nothing in its insatiable quest for power.

The fate of Man and Fae rests on destroying the book and recovering the long-lost Song of Making, the sole magic that can repair the fragile fabric of the Earth. But to achieve these aims, sidhe-seers, the Nine, Seelie, and Unseelie must form unlikely alliances and make heart-wrenching choices. For Barrons and Jada, this means finding the Seelie Queen who alone can wield the mysterious song, negotiating with a lethal Unseelie prince hell-bent on ruling the Fae courts, and figuring out how to destroy the Sinsar Dubh while keeping Mac alive.

This time, there’s no gain without sacrifice, no pursuit without risk, no victory without irrevocable loss. In the battle for Mac’s soul, every decision exacts a tremendous price.

Unwrap the Perfect Gift in Lacy Williams

lose-a-guy

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Dates: Matched Online (Series)
by Lacy Williams (Author)

This review is from: December 28, 2016 By Kay Daniels (eBooks Edition-Goodreads)

I picked up How to Lose a Guy in 10 Dates as a free read and it was a terrific find. The circle I belong to doesn’t typically give a lot of detail on the books up for grabs, so basically it’s like picking the grab bag gift during the holidays. You look through the pile and try to judge your gifts’ contents based on the outside wrapping. I have to admit picking out a free book, just like a Christmas grab bag gift, the pretty packaging doesn’t always match the inside content. However, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Dates was not a white elephant gift it was pretty packaging and perfect gift all in one.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Dates is a story full of heart, charm, and lots of horrible first dates. Angela Hudson is a single, divorced mother with a seven-year old son and her high school reunion is fast approaching. Due to her “most likely to succeed” status a decade ago Angela is ashamed to show up with a dismantled marriage and a barely thriving business. Desperate she sets up an online dating account and so begins the first of many extremely bad dates.

Drew Scheffield was taking a break from NYC and working in his brothers coffee shop in Oklahoma. He was there to witness Angela’s first disastrous date, along with her second, and her third, etc… He shouldn’t be jealous of the men she was meeting considering he was only in town for a few months, but something about Angela and her son, Thad, drew him in over and over again and he was a goner even before he knew he was in the game.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Dates was funny, romantic, and enjoyable to read from start to finish. Within the first page I was drawn in by Lacy’s witty writing and unique charm. By the end if the first chapter I knew I Lacy Williams would not be a one time author read for me. I am looking forward to finding her other books.

2016 Recap, The Best Of

6eef8950-7e5f-4632-a4b3-8b5de19ec875

2016 is almost at a close and I like to take a moment to reflect and look back at my reading list. It’s a chance to remember the books I’ve read sort of like reminiscing with a good friend.

I smile when I see a book I absolutely loved and want to crack open again. I cringe when I see a title I struggled to get through. I kick myself when I see an author I wanted to read more of and didn’t get around to doing yet.

So, without further ado, let me get to the 2016 recap.

1. The perfect writing duo.
The Perfect Gentleman’s Club (series) by Shayla Black and Lexi Blake.

img_0021

Murder, mystery, sex, scandal. It was the perfect way to begin 2016. Scandal Never Sleeps, the first book in The Perfect Gentleman’s Club series is well crafted and written by two of the best authors on the market. Put them together and you have the perfect writing duo. They put out 3 books in the series this past year and I hope more come from this dynamic duo.

2. The Best Romance Novel
Stuck Up Suit by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward.

517Vnflaf5L

Stuck up Suit hit every list as the #1 romance read for 2016 for a good reason. Here is the synopsis:

Hot guy in a suit loses his phone on the morning commute train ride. A good samaritan (or woman who had been ogling him when he dropped it) goes out of her way to return it. Hot-suit is an ass and won’t see her or thank her for going out of her way, but hot-stuck-up suit didn’t expect an obscene gesture pic left on his phone that just happened to be well placed between ample bosoms. Good samaritan never expected him to reach out to her and she also never expected him to be anything but a stuck-up suit, but then sometimes opposites attract when best laid plans aren’t taken.

It is such a good read. I can’t recommend it enough.

3. My huge girl crush of the year:
Helena Hunting (especially Violet)

Early summer I found a wonderful book, Pucked, and I was instantly hooked. It lead me to read everything I could find that Helena had published, which for this year was a total of 13 books/novellas. I tend to get a little obsessed when I develop a new author crush. If you haven’t found Hunting’s work yet, I suggest you go right away and buy everything. NOW. You won’t regret it.

4. My new favorite-discovered-author-to-keep-watching (or reading) in 2017:
Mia Hopkins

Mia found me and asked if I’d read and review one of her books. As much as I love discovering and adding new authors to my reading list, it is also a big responsibility to give honest feedback to an author when they ask for reviews. I cannot thank her enough for introducing me to her books. I love getting sucked into her amazing worlds and always hate to leave. Make sure you check out everything Mia has to offer.

5.  I’ll be ending 2016 with a few more reviews, so this isn’t the end, quite yet, because we all know this feeling…

Stay tuned as those reviews will be coming soon.

Until then, have a great holiday season and thank you for tuning in.

Keep reading, keep writing and good fortune.

Hang Tough; A Blacktop Cowboys’ Novel (Series)
by Lorelei James (Author)

This review is from: December 12, 2016 By Kay Daniels (eReader Edition-Goodreads)

I apologize for not writing this review sooner. I read Hang Tough over a month ago and I somehow lost track of it in the midst of the holiday hustle and bustle. So without further ado, on with the review……

Hang Tough is the eighth novel in the Blacktop Cowboy series. Lorelei has a few novellas tucked in among the full length novels, but this particular book focuses on Tobin Hale, a real sweetheart of a cowboy who has been long overdue to meet his perfect mate. As a matter of fact Lorelei about did all of us faithful readers in at the end of her last novel (Wrapped and Strapped) when Tobin announced he was leaving. That sweet man leave?! He couldn’t leave. What he needed was a swift kick in the pants and then he needed love and he needed it fast.

I’ll let you in on a little secret, Lorelei didn’t disappoint. She found Tobin the perfect girl.

Tobin was tired of living his life in a holding pattern, watching everyone else move on with theirs. He had plans which involved moving on and out of Muddy Gap. But before Tobin could leave town, Garnet asked the young cowboy for help and it just so happens that Tobin has a soft spot for all of the Mudlillies. A group of rambunctious women who also happen to cause havoc all over town. Garnet is desperate and Tobin is just helping out his friend, or so he keeps telling himself. When Garnet’s family gets wind of a young cowboy moving in with her, well, it doesn’t take long before Jade Evans, the granddaughter of the infamous Mudlilly, shows up in town. However, Jade believes the sexy, young cowboy is there to take advantage of her grandmother and Jade will go down swinging defending her grandmothers honor even if Garnet tries everything to keep those two apart. Jade and Tobin just don’t realize that the harder Garnet tries to keep them apart the more they want to be together.

This book was such a pleasure to read. A complete cat and mouse game of watching two “kids” trying not to get caught as they test their boundaries. They are both caught in a game they didn’t even know they were playing and it was a complete joy to read.

Tobin has always been a favorite character of mine and I was so happy that he finally received his happily ever after, that will also keep him around in the series.

A Bedtime Bite

The Manhattan Memoirs; A Bedtime Story, Volumes #1 and #2 (Series)
by J.D. Lexx (Author)

This review is from: December 11, 2016 By Kay Daniels (Kindle Edition)

Both Manhattan Memoirs are quick reads, a true bedtime story that you can start and finish right before bed. With that being said it took me just a bit to get invested in volume one. J.D. Lexx is an overly descriptive writer. Something I normally enjoy, but I felt for a book that is only 46 pages in length when he went on, at length, for pages about New York City it lost the excitement that a short story usually holds. It wasn’t until half way through the book that the story really picked up and grabbed me which lead me to volume two.

Volume two started with sizzle and fire and held me for most of the book. unfortunately I lost the subplot along the way. Once again for such a short book there was a lot going on. Overall I enjoyed Manhattan Memoirs as long as I didn’t try to dig too deep into what was going on with all the subplots.

Manhattan Memoirs is about a business man who moves to NYC and on his first night in town meets a woman with whom he’s been chatting with through texts and emails. She is everything and more than he could ever imagine, yet he discovers that there is a deception, a world he wasn’t privy to and he wants in, but at what cost?

Since I prefer to focus on the positive with book reviews, knowing all the hard work authors put into their craft, here’s why you should pick up Manhattan Memoirs; They are very quick reads you can start and finish in one sitting. Because J.D. Lexx is a descriptive writer the sex scenes will steam up your bedroom. If you enjoy a series this is one that will continue to grow.

Three Fat Singletons (A standalone story)
by J.M. Bartholomew (Author)

This review is from: December 11, 2016 By Kay Daniels (eReader Edition-Goodreads)

I haven’t read a chick lit book in quite some time so to be honest it took me a while to shake the “when is the main character going to meet her guy and fall in love” vibe from my system.

Three Fat Singletons is about three overweight friends who have lousy luck at dating and relationships. They have only each other to rely upon after each failed attempt or blunder with men and prove over and over again that it’s more important to have a good girlfriend than a lousy man in your life.

Now aside from my own reprogramming from romance reader to chick lit, the other thing I did have to make adjustments for was J.M. Bartholomew writes in British slang. For 95% of what was said I was able to surmise what the author meant by verbal cues and plot, as for the other 5% that I couldn’t guess it didn’t harm the storyline by just moving forward.

So for anyone looking for a “Brit lit” book where the characters make horrible decisions, yet at the end of the day know you have your friends always by your side then Three Fat Singletons is a trip across the pond to jump into.

So Many Things to Love About This Book

img_9990

Hollywood Honkytonk; Kings of California #2 (Series)
by Mia Hopkins (Author)

This review is from: December 10, 2016 By Kay Daniels (eBook Edition-Goodreads)

You will be transported directly into the heart of LA, Hollywood and everything Orange County has to offer when you jump into the wonderful world of Mia Hopkins. Mia’s talent to bring the world alive, to transport you so vividly to the surroundings her characters live in, you’ll feel as if you’ve experienced the wind whipping through your hair after driving along the coastline and tasted the salt upon your tongue after swimming in the ocean.

Mia’s descriptive writing isn’t the only reason why you should fall in love with her work. Her talent for writing characters that deal with everyday problems will melt your heart, most likely steam up your late night reading, and well, you just can’t help but root for them to fall in love.

Jack Lamont left Oleander ten years ago and set out to make it big in Hollywood. With hard work and a bit of luck, Jack’s fame was rising and he was the newest face walking the red carpets. However, he was done with partying and one night stands he wanted something more. He just wasn’t sure what. Something was missing in his life and he couldn’t place it until that something literally tripped him and ran back into his life. He was never more thankful to a distracted dog than he was when it forced Riley back into his life.

Riley Rodriguez had the opportunity to leave Oleander with Jack ten years ago, but family obligations kept her from doing what her heart wanted. Now a decade had passed, yet it had felt more like a lifetime. Saddled with an ugly divorce, no career, no family, and no money she had nothing to offer a Hollywood hunk like Jack. Starting over was hard enough, but starting over when the Hollywood ragmags watch your every move was torture.

Jack and Riley were high school friends, never lovers. When they meet again after a decade of changes and experiences, they meet on an entirely different plane. They are still friends, but a new sexual tension exists that didn’t exist before. With paparazzi following their every move, is this really the life Riley is ready for? Can Jack be the man for Riley and be the leading man for everyone else?

There are so many things to love about this book, but probably among my top favorite is how real the characters are. Jack may be a movie star, but he never once comes across as a pompous, entitled ass and Riley never looked at him or treated him like he was a movie star. When they were together they were just two people who had a basis of friendship that boiled and evolved into a blazing inferno of passion. That made this an exciting, page-turning read.

wp-1481255820123.png Jack is a blonde, blue-eyed, ripped hunkwp-1481255824718.png

For some reason my mind conjured up Efron. Watch the new Baywatch trailers to see a very ripped Efron (drool) and think of Jack, especially when you need a fix of book boyfriend.

Hollywood Honkytonk releases January 13, 2017 available in eBook or print wherever books are sold.

No Regrets, Just Thrills

Thrill Me; Sole Regret #9 (Series)
by Olivia Cunning (Author)

This review is from: December 4, 2016 By Kay Daniels (Kindle Edition-Goodreads)

Sole Regret  is Olivia Cunning’s novella series involving hotter than sin rock stars each finding their true loves. The series began with five books, each rock star receiving their own novella revolving around how they met their one night stand and the wild night that followed. However, it didn’t end there. The next five books have been what happened after that amazing first night because let’s all admit it, who wouldn’t want just one more night with a gorgeous rock star and their chance for a happily ever after. Then again in the light of day, once life gets real and the realization of knowing you’d have to live life on the road, not to mention the press and the possibility of past “baggage” following you around, you might reconsider. Maybe.

In Thrill Me, Owen Mitchell is one of my favorite characters. He plays bass for Sole Regret, is a total sweetheart, and he has a special piercing that Caitlyn can’t get enough of. He has a habit of giving away his heart too easily so he’s had it broken a lot, but that doesn’t mean he gives up at finding the perfect girl for him. He’s a true romantic at heart which makes me melt everytime he thinks he’s falling too fast. He is not your typical rock star when it comes to feelings. When he meets Caitlyn he feels he’s hit the jackpot. She’s smart, beautiful, and she seems to get him, but she only wants to keep it casual, which crushes him, however, he’s used to it. Could I just give him a hug or twenty?

Catilyn Mattock, now divorced Catilyn Hanson, promised herself she wouldn’t fall in love again so soon. The ink is barely dry on her divorce papers. Owen makes is very hard to stick to that promise. Maybe if she just used him for his gorgeous, hard, sexy body she wouldn’t fall in love with him. He could give her the thrills she never had in her marriage, but why did Owen have to be so sweet? He makes it extremely difficult not to love him.

Reading this couple together is hot, fun, and emotional. You can’t help wanting to reach through the pages and to give Owen a hug multiple times.  Seriously I need to hug this sexy man.

The next book, Treasure Me book #10, will focus on another band mate, Kellen. So to help readers who haven’t read Sole Regret yet, here is how the series works;

Books 1-5 are set up as “meet and sparks fly”
Books 6-10 are set up as “tons of crazy stuff happens”
Books 11-15 are set up as “oh, so that’s how the crazy stuff is resolved”

So buckle up and enjoy the ride.

The Gift; A Sadist and His Slave
by Riley Edwards (Author)

This review is from: December 3, 2016 By Kay Daniels (eReader Edition)

The Gift is a short, but intense novella about a sadist Dom and his masochistic slave. With the brief look into the couple’s world it displays the bond that quickly builds between this give and take relationship of extreme pain.

For a masochist to really let go they need to receive pain at a level that would seem cruel to most. Victoria craves the pain, but until she met John she never was able to achieve satisfaction.

To deliver the right about of pain at a level as to not cause permanent damage a Dom has to have the right touch. John has never met the right woman he felt comfortable enough to really be himself with until he met Victoria.

There is an extreme amount of trust that forms rather quickly bewteen these two. John and Victoria’s story may seem overwhelming in it’s intensity, but it is a love story at the heart and that is what will pull you in.

Look for The Awakening, by Riley Edwards, coming out in 2017. It will feature John and Victoria’s friend, Dean and a sweet submissive he has a hard time saying no to.
