A Beastly Good Story From Start to Finish

Beastly Lights (Standalone)
by Theresa Jane (Author)

This review is from: March 30, 2017 By Kay Daniels (epub-Goodreads)
Heat Level:🔥

I love reading a story about a sexy rockstar and when I had a chance to read Beastly Lights I was enthralled with the storyline. It didn’t take me long to become completely engrossed and I have to say that Theresa Jane threw me for a loop that this was unlike any rockstar story I have read before. Beastly Lights kept me up reading until the wee hours of the morning. It is a “can’t-put-down” kind of story.

Here is why…
Freya Coleman is a starving artist living in New York and when I say starving, she is at the point where she is breaking into her brother’s apartment to “borrow” $20 just so she can eat. Unfortunately, she walks into her brother’s poker game night where he is hosting none other than the famous Liam Henderson, rocker-badboy-extraordinaire. When a bet goes bad, Freya finds herself on the losing side where she is now in the services, maid services, of said badboy.

Where this story may seem far-fetched and an author could have left gaping plot holes, Theresa Jane covers every inch and you won’t be disappointed as to why or how Freya ends up in the hands of Liam, but I’m getting ahead of myself.
Once Freya ends up at Liam’s home she vaguely wonders why she was even hired as a maid, since it appears that Liam is a complete neat freak. His home is stark white and bordering on OCD tendencies on how, where, and when things should be done.

This is where the story really grabs hold of you and you won’t be able to put it down, but I’ll let you decide that for yourself.
Freya is an artist. She’s messy and she sees his stark white, orderly apartment as a challenge. On top of that, she detests Liam. She hates his partying. She hates that he treats her like the help, even though she is, she still hates it. She pushes back on everything he does and doesn’t back down. Her inner monologue is hilarious. Her conversations with Liam are also chuckle worthy. I love every time she gives him hell.

Beastly Lights is told entirely in first person POV from Freya’s perspective, but Theresa Jane does an amazing job of filling in the holes of letting you know just what is happening around Freya.
In any story told from this type of perspective well written secondary characters are integral in filling in all the holes or potential gaps. You need them so you know what the other main character could be thinking since we never get an actual look inside their actual thoughts or feelings. Theresa Jane did a great job at building a world around Freya and helping her figure out the badboy Liam. I fell in love with everyone who came into Freya’s life just as much as I did with the main characters. The little four year old, Davis, is Freya’s ally and hates Liam more than anyone should for just being four years old. Yet, he’s the most adorable thing you could possibly read. Liam detests him because unlike the rest of the world who adores him and fawns all over him, Davis doesn’t. Every time Liam and Davis interacted I couldn’t help but laugh out loud.

This isn’t like other rockstar stories, in that the first half of the story is centered on the living arrangement, where Freya is Liam’s maid, and how she detests his very existence. The second half of the story you do delve a little deeper into the life of an actual rockstar, when Liam goes on tour and their relationship has evolved into something more, yet it’s complicated, but I’ll let you enjoy discovering it.

Trust me, you will love this book.

Mister Moneybags

by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward

I met Bianca in an elevator.
She was on her way to interview me when we got stuck.
The beautiful, raven-haired reporter assumed I was a delivery guy because of the way I was dressed.
She had no clue I was really Dex Truitt, the wealthy, successful businessman she’d dubbed “Mister Moneybags”—her afternoon appointment.
Bianca told me how much she hated Dex’s type—snobby, over educated, silver- spooned men who didn’t appreciate the simple things in life.
So, after the elevator finally started moving again, I cancelled the interview and let her believe I was someone I wasn’t—a bike messenger named Jay. I loved the way she looked at the fake me and didn’t want it to end.
I began dating her as “Jay”—all the while letting her interview the real me over email.
I didn’t expect that our chemistry online would be just as hot.
I didn’t expect the mess I’d gotten myself into.
I didn’t expect that Jay and Dex would fall in love with her.
And she was falling for two men.
Only, both men were me.
And when she found out, we were both going to lose her.
Nothing could have prepared me for that day. And I certainly wasn’t prepared for what came after.
All good things must come to an end, right?
Except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.

Collectively Brilliant

Unbroken (Part one); The Collective (Series)
by Riley Edwards (Author)

This review is from: March 23, 2017 By Kay Daniels (Kindle Edition-Goodreads)
Heat Level:🔥🔥

The Collective, Unbroken, begins by pulling at your heartstrings and then quickly delves into the mystery that will lead you down twists and turns searching for clues. The first book by Riley Edwards is quick paced and grossly engaging as you try to figure out the puzzle of “who done it” before the characters do.

Since her husbands murder, Ava Kelley’s life has been on autopilot. Work, sleep, eat, repeat. The one small joy she has in her repetitive life is her ten year old son, JJ. Working hard to support her son she doesn’t recognize the man who has been helping her out and placed practically right under her nose. Her late husbands friend, Reid, has been patiently waiting for the day when she was finally ready to stop grieving and begin living, will it be too late when Ava finally wakes up?

Reid has the patience of a saint. It’s been five years since his friend was murdered and even though watching over Ava and JJ wasn’t a burden, his feelings for Ava have grown more everyday. Unfortunately she is still living for the dead. Circumstances finally push Ava out of her walking dead daze, but not in the way Reid was hoping. With a dead body count on the rise, an unwanted family member in town, and danger lurking around every corner Reid and Ava must learn to trust one another while figuring out this new attraction that is burning between them.

And did I mention there is an adorable ten year old boy involved who makes this book extra enjoyable to read? Well, I suppose you’ll just have to find out for yourself.

This crossover series is a huge win for all the authors involved. Don’t miss any of the releases, make sure you check out the schedule listed below. Each book will pull you in, leave you wanting more while you teeter on the edge of your seat with suspense.

About the Author:
Kat Mizera is a South Florida native. Born in Miami Beach with a healthy dose of wanderlust, she’s called Los Angeles, Long Island, upstate New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Atlanta home. She’s never been able to pick which locale is her favorite, but if pressed, she’d probably choose the west coast.

Kat has been a working freelance writer for nearly 30 years. She sold her first article–a review of a rock concert–for $10 in 1985. Since then she’s been an entertainment journalist, waitress, bartender, legal assistant, food critic, magazine editor, substitute teacher, and sports writer. She also spent some time working at A & M Records in Los Angeles.

As you can guess from her series, the Las Vegas Sidewinders, Kat loves hockey. She is also a freelance hockey writer, covering her favorite team, the Florida Panthers, and any other teams that have an interesting story. The rest of the time, she writes novels: sexy, romantic fiction that she hopes makes you as happy as it makes her. There’s something enticing about hockey players and romance…

You Need To Read This Series

All You Need; The Need You Series (Series)
by Lorelei James (Author)

This review is from: March 19, 2017 By Kay Daniels (Kindle Edition-Goodreads)
Heat Level:🔥🔥🔥

Lorelei never fails to leave me with a huge book hangover. Her mastery of the written word creates believable characters that wrap around your heart, nestle in, and take up residence. She is the queen of love stories.

Axl “The Hammer” Hammerquist is supposed to turn his image around, according to his new agent. There is only one little snag. A hot little snag, Annika Lund. She just happened to be the kindling to his fire, not exactly what he had in mind to tame his wild image, but his agent had other ideas. Annika, aka Attila, seemed to ignite everything inside him and practically melted the ice he skated upon for a living. Maybe he could trust her with his secrets and they could actually speak the same language for once.

Annika Lund, termed the Iron Princess, is a hard-ass business woman who typically dominated the business world, yet when she came face to face with one Swedish hockey player, Ax-hell Hammerquist, she seemed to lose her mind. Unable to say no to his agent’s request to be set up as his fake girlfriend she finds herself in the one place she has a hard time wearing her iron facade. Axl works his way under her skin as their fake relationship takes on more meaning to them both. Before they both know it they are in too deep speaking a common language, love, but can they survive the fallout of their fake relationship to make things real?

Meet up with the entire Lund family for catch up and potential meddling. Also see glimpses into potential family members where future novels may arise. (At least a huge fan can always hope.) A sure thing, Jensen Lund is up next, in When I Need You, releasing this summer, July 2017.

Baby Loves a Good Sports Romance

Jocked Up (Standalone)
by Summer Cooper (Author)

This review is from: March 19, 2017 By Kay Daniels (Kindle Edition-Goodreads)
Heat Level:🔥🔥🔥

Jocked Up begins with Bethany Amberson, a single mother, who’s made it on her own and seems content with her life that is until Drake Saterlee returns home for a visit. You instantly know that this is a man she never cares to see again, ever. There is some mystery surrounding the circumstances of their previous relationship for awhile, but the backstory fills in as the plot moves along. Once Bethany finally agrees to go out with Drake, the reunion date is probably my favorite part of the book. It is quite funny as she prepares for her date, there is no way she is going to allow Drake back into her life, much less her panties, so dressing practically like a nun is his punishment.

This is a second chances HEA book where the hero has to make a decision if family comes before his career and the heroine must decide if pride comes before her ultimate happiness.

Jocked Up moves from first POV in Bethany’s thoughts to third POV when Drake interjects. The switch in point of view is also a first for me, but was easy enough to follow along once I realized what the author was doing.

Overall, the storyline is good and the characters are likeable, although there were a few plot holes and some conclusions that were assumed by the characters where suddenly all seemed right. If Summer had taken just a bit more time to fill in the holes I think this would be an excellent 5 star read as her writing style is easy to follow.

Summer Cooper is a new author read for me.

This and That

Right Where I Need To Be

Most of my childhood I struggled with the need to blend in, I desperately wanted to be one of crowd. It didn’t help that my mother was one of the biggest abusers to my ego stating plainly that I should be just like so and so. Sometime in my teenage years it dawned on me that I would never be like the beautiful girls she wanted me to emulate; my hair was too red, too curly, I was too pale, and top it all off I was tall, uncoordinated and didn’t fit into my own body. I was the total package.

Thanks to amazing friends, who also were complete misfits, an amazing father who loved his weird daughter for all her strangeness, and many other puzzle pieces that thankfully fit together I made it out of those awful years mostly unscathed.

My adult years I’ve spent no more comfortable in my own skin, but I have spent time trying to shed the old coats of comparison. I have discovered the more time I spend comparing my life to those of others I feel that old sense of shame. Where I cannot live up to the sense of perfection that I somehow have deluded myself into believing I needed to feel whole.

With age brings wisdom. I do understand this more each passing year.

I’m understanding that I will never be perfect and only in my imperfections am I truly unique. A rose among the thorns.

I recall around ten years ago someone saying that very statement to me. She was referring to my bright orange hair standing out in a crowd of people. I still recall the embarrassment I felt at her statement as eyes in the crowd turned to me. What I don’t recall is if I thanked her for her compliment because my mind was playing all the things that people were probably thinking about me. Things I have no way of knowing even exist except my own insecurities, but in my head their looks were saying, “How dare she be a rose,” “She’s not a rose, SHE’s the thorn,” “More like a weed to be to tossed away.”

I have discovered children will humble you like no one else in the world. You see, as I struggled to find my own uniqueness, my children lovingly and unconditionally pointed out how awesome it is was to have a mom with beautiful red hair. For you see neither of them have it. They loved it when strangers told their mother how beautiful her hair was. Their unconditional admiration has helped me overcome one of my biggest comparison shame coats.

It has taken me a lifetime to realize that standing out, being a literal beacon in a crowd, just being who I am, is not a horrible stigma. I’ve stopped comparing myself to the expectations of everyone else and know it’s okay to just be me and I’m right where I need to be.

I may never have classic beauty. I may never be a millionaire (okay that has nothing to do with what I’ve been talking about, more of an observation but it still saddens me), I may never have a lot of things, but I do know there will never be another me. This I do know.

I don’t want to be just another voice lost in the crowd. I don’t want to do things exactly the same way as everyone else. I enjoy being me, although I wouldn’t mind being a little closer to a millionaire (okay I’ll let it go, for now.)

Be a rose. Be a tulip. Be a carnation. Let’s fill the world with a beautiful flower garden. Just be you.

➙Amazon live release alert:

Get ready to meet Easton Wylder and Scout Dalton…

“Don’t ‘Easton’ me,” he says as he turns to face me, eyes alive but posture guarded.

So we stand and stare but don’t speak. My heart is in my throat. My emotions a train wreck inside of me.

I expect him to tell me to leave.

I expect him to shake his head and say no more.

Wouldn’t that be fitting, considering I now want more?

But he does neither. We just stand there as the air around us shifts and changes, reacts and charges. It’s hard to draw in a breath, and yet I know damn well it’s not the air that’s making me feel that way but rather the look in his eye.

Then in the space from one beat to the next, he has me against the wall, his lips on mine, his body pressed against me in the most delicious of ways. Our hands grab and pull and squeeze and feel.

He wages an all-out assault on my senses with his lips alone. There is nothing gentle about the kiss. There is nothing passive. It’s packed full of greed and need and hunger and a violent desire that ignites every nerve inside my body.

I react in kind. My anger at his accusations earlier, my sadness over Ford’s birthday, and the realization of my feelings—they all curl into an explosive ball of harbored energy that gives just as good as it gets.

There are sparks of hunger on his tongue when it brushes against mine. Each connection is like a live wire hitting water—evocative, incendiary, inescapable.

And just when I feel like I can’t catch my breath—when I’m drowning in everything that is Easton Wylder—he tears his mouth from mine, hands fisted in my hair, knee between my thighs, and eyes a burning kaleidoscope of colors.

“Fucking Christ, I’m so mad at you right now.”

She may be feisty, athletic, defiant, and gorgeous, but Easton is left questioning whether she has what it takes to help him.

Scout Dalton’s out to prove a female can handle the pressure of running the physical therapy regimen of an MLB club. And that proof comes in the form of getting phenom Easton Wylder back on the field. But getting him healthy means being hands-on.

And with a man as irresistible as Easton, being hands-on can only lead to one thing, trouble. Because the more she touches him, the more she wants him, and she can’t want him. Not when it’s her job to maintain the club’s best interest, in regards to whether he’s ready to play.

But when sparks fly and fine lines are crossed, can they withstand the heat, or is one of them bound to get burned?

Hot Sports Romance

Salvation’s Inferno; The Inferno Series (Series)
by Kat Mizera (Author)

This review is from: March 12, 2017 By Kay Daniels (Kindle Edition-Goodreads)
Heat Level:🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

When the story first begins Dante Lamonte is in a bad mental state. Having recently lost his unborn child and best friend in a horrific accident he’s in a deep depression and making bad choices regarding his life. His friend and publicist, Kate, invites him down for the holidays hoping that spending time with people he knows will lighten his dark mood. What he didn’t expect was to run into the one person who was the perfect shining beacon to all the darkness in his messed up life.

Becca Hernandez is a busy media consultant for the Las Vegas hockey team, the Sidewinders. Her job keeps her pretty busy, so busy in fact that she never finds time to date. She had one night out, a few months ago where she met the perfect man, well he was almost perfect, he just wasn’t exactly available. If she’d only met Dante at a different time in both their lives. When her friend Kate invites her over for a party it seemed their timing may have finally lined up, but where they ready for such a big commitment to each other. When did life become so complicated?

Becca and Dante have fantastic chemistry when it comes to playing between the sheets, but when trouble brews outside the bedroom is their love strong enough to survive all odds or will they incinerate each other with the passion they share for one another.

This is book one in the Inferno series, yet as I began reading it became clear that it is closely tied to Kat’s Sidewinder series. There were times I was a bit lost in the backstory since I haven’t read the other series, but overall I was able to catch up to the main plot and move forward. It is a very steamy, sexy read and it won’t leave you wanting in the bedroom scenes.

Another Hit By Blake

For His Eyes Only; Masters and Mercenaries (Series)
by Lexi Blake (Author)

This review is from: March 5, 2017 By Kay Daniels (ePub Edition-Goodreads)
Heat Level:🔥🔥🔥🔥

For His Eyes Only is Lexi Blake’s 13th full length novel in the Masters and Mercenaries series. She’s had two series branch off this storyline along with several novellas written along the way. I will get to the reason why should read the newest addition to the Masters and Merc’s series, but first I want to tell you why should be a lifelong Lexi Blake fan in the first place.

Lexi’s writing is superior. When you pick up one of her novels you are actually getting a novel. A 500 page plus book of story that is filled with meat, potatoes, vegetables, and yes, even dessert.

You can pick up any of her books and even though I would suggest starting at the beginning, you don’t need to. Did you not see the paragraph above that said her books are 500+ pages? She weaves a tale that will not leave you feeling left out, nor will you feel like she needs to move the plot along because you’ve read it all before. Again, did you not read the paragraph above? Sorry, I’m being cheeky. I get that way after spending too much time with my favorite man, Ian Taggert.

Carry on…

Have you ever had a favorite author and perhaps over time their writing became predictable or somewhat cookie-cuter?

I can honestly say that with Lexi Blake you never have the same story. Yes, her characters are merc’s/spies and they are into BDSM, but that is just the surface of what makes up the plot of Lexi’s books. To dig into the meat and potatoes; to date her characters have dealt with international plots of assignation, global takeovers, loved ones arising from the dead, government conspiracy, evil doctors, and chaotic family. The overall arc of her series is fantastic and I enjoy the spy story just as much as anything else.

I think what I love best is Lexi’s continuing theme. Everyone is salvageable. No one is a lost cause. You are loved for who you are and family is where you hang your hat.  I think that is why I adore and have a huge book boyfriend crush on Ian Taggert. He is larger than life and overly sarcastic (actually I love that most), but he takes in every lost soul, laying it all out there when he isn’t sympathetic, but he does have a huge heart. No one gets left behind. I can’t help but smile every time I see him. That man just does it for me.

This finally brings me around to For His Eyes Only a story centered around Nickoli Markovic and Hayley Dalton. Nick is a man torn between his past, a dead lover Desiree, and his future, Hayley who happens to be Desiree’s cousin. It doesn’t help that five years ago Nick almost gave everything up to begin a life with Hayley, but Desiree talked him out of it and he walked away from Hayley. He’s convinced that she never should have wanted him back then and she definitely shouldn’t want him now. He’s done things he isn’t proud of and her life would forever be in jeopardy because of the choices he made.

Hayley Dalton needs Nick. She desired him, sure, but she didn’t travel half way around the world to rekindle with a man who walked out on her five years ago and never contacted her once in all that time. If it wasn’t for someone trying to kill her and Desiree’s specific instructions to contact Nickoli should something like this happen she never would darken his doorstep again. So why did the very sight of him ignite things inside her she’d thought were long extinguished?

The two must work together to solve a mystery that involves them both. A mystery that dates back to when neither knew they were playing a game that is bigger than they both expected. The McKay-Taggert family is back and working together to solve the mysterious puzzle. Will Nick and Hayley be able to salvage what is broken before they run out of time or are somethings unfixable?

Up Next for Lexi Blake:

Dr. Stephanie Gibson saved lives, but with one mistake she needs Brody to step up and help her in her time of need.

I Have a Dream

Have you ever had a dream? One that filled you with such joy that the very thought of fulfilling it consumed your every waking thought?

Every dream doesn’t just happen, sadly. I wish there was a magic wand that granted every thing I wanted and “poof” instant success. However, my fairy godmother is either taking her sweet time, stuck in traffic, or there truly are no mystical wish granting-midnight striking-ballgown granting-prince giving-fairy godmothers. Sigh.

My dream of becoming a published author began over 20 years ago. Shocking, I know. I must have been a toddler when this dream began, right? Okay, maybe just slightly older. Anyway, I had dreams and I dreamed big. A little over 20 years ago I was young, er-younger, working the best job in the world (in a bookstore) and still at a time in my life where I had little to no responsibilities. Not only was I beginning my journey of how to become a writer, but I was also engrossing myself in the authors who were already paving the path of what I wanted to write. You see while working at the bookstore I had my pulse on what has happening in the romance literary world. Reading everything I could get my hands on, I had instant access to magazines such as RWA, which I always read on my breaks, I was able to buy books at a deep discount, which I took great advantage of, and I stocked my home bookshelves with guides on how to research, write, and publish my finished manuscripts. It was pure heaven.

Yes, I still own everything I ever bought all those years ago. This is just a small sample of my vast dreaming library. I wonder if any of those publishing addresses still work? I also wonder if anyone actually get’s “Happily” published? Hmmmm.

Anyway, it wasn’t long into my young and foolish youth that responsibilities came home to live and dreams had to be shelved. No longer was I able to spend all my earnings on books or spend all my free time on dreaming. A home, a job, and a family took precedence over living a fictional life.

For the past 20 years my dream would peak out and remind me that it was unfinished. All the books that I had packed away when responsibility took precedence would resurface and the itch would instantly return. I would try to write during quiet times, which were sometimes few and far between. I would research late at night when my kids were sleeping and before I had to sleep and go to work the next day. Somehow, my dream refused to die.

go-live-your-dreamHowever, with each manuscript time passed and with each story idea more time passed until eventually fear settled in to the point that I haven’t picked up those helpful books I purchased 20 years ago in a very long time.

I’ve focused on raising a family, my job, and so many other things that all the dreams I had so long ago I now face with fear. I dreamed big for so long and even though I’m finally at a point in my life where I have time to focus energy on those dreams I’m completely full of fear. What if I completely fail and everything I ever wanted to achieve never happens? What if I completely suck and then what?

I know that fear is the killer of dreams more than jumping in with both feet and just trying.

It hasn’t been until the past couple years that I even created a writing space and completely unpacked all of those old and outdated resources knowing I’d be forced to face my dreams every time I sat in that space. I find I’m very good at avoiding this spot when I want. Dreams are scary.

Now you should ask, why did I write this and why are there so many Disney or more appropriately Rapunzel themed pictures?

I have a very good answer.

Walt Disney was a man who didn’t let anyone stand in the way of his dreams. He is the ultimate dreamer and Rapunzel was a girl locked away in a tower who was full of dreams, it was all she had until Eugene came and rescued her. She also rescued him from his thieving ways and pretty much from running from his past. I love how Disney portray’s women in their films. The damsel is never a true damsel in distress, it gives young girls so much to look up to besides just looking beautiful awaiting their prince in a tower.

Anyway, Rapunzel had a dream that consumed her every waking thought and she didn’t let anything stand in her way of fulfilling it. No matter what obstacle came in her way she was bound and determined to see it to completion.  Thank you Rapunzel and Disney for reminding me that I can do this. I can’t let fear rule my life.

This is also important, especially considering just a few years have passed and I’m no longer 20 years old.

Keep Reading. Keep Writing. Keep Dreaming.
