-A reclusive rock star going through the motions-

Jake McKallister might have been a rock star, but he was no ordinary one. Surviving an unspeakable crime as a young teen had shaped him into a guarded workaholic, and he now lived his life trying to forget. If it hadn’t been for music and the redemption he found through it, he might not have survived. Career success came easily for him. Personal connections did not.

-A vivacious college student embracing life-

When outspoken and fun-loving Casey Caldwell was paired with the famously reserved musician for a friend’s wedding, she was prepared for the worst. What could they possibly have in common? She was a bubbly talker; he was a media-shy loner. His life was filled with music; she couldn’t carry a tune. She’d enjoyed a happy childhood; his was a well-publicized nightmare.

-Their worlds are about to collide-

Despite their obvious differences, Jake and Casey found each other, and her light balanced out his darkness. Would their love be strong enough to survive the weight of his tragic past?

I Love Cake

Cake; A Love Story #1 (Series)
by J.Bengtsson (Author)

This review is from: January 31, 2018 By Kay Daniels (Kindle Edition-Goodreads)
Rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐
Heat Level:🔥🔥

Jake McKallister is a rockstar, but not just any ordinary rockstar. He was kidnapped as a child; brutalized, abused, and almost killed which alone made him infamous, a time in his life he’d rather forget, however the press and his new found rockstar fame doesn’t let him forget easily. Coming off as aloof in the public eye, it forces Jake to live a reclusive life. Once he’s mostly satisfied with. All he wants to do is live his life, make music, and be left alone. That was until he mets Casey Caldwell. She was unlike any girl he’s met before. Casey doesn’t fangirl all over him when she meets him for the first time, an awkward situation at best when meeting her at his brother’s wedding and they were paired as bridesmaid and groomsman. Instead, Casey pulls a prank on him which instantly puts him at ease, something he hadn’t felt in a long time. Something he isn’t willing to give up anytime soon. As the weekend progresses, he finds himself constantly pulled to Casey’s side and he can’t explain why, but he likes it. He likes her. He wants more time with her and he hopes she wants more of the same.

Casey Caldwell is a senior in college, majoring in accounting. She doesn’t know what Jake McKallister sees in her, especially since her superhero power is word vomiting in all the wrong situations. However, Jake seems to find her funny which makes her the “right situation” for the first time in her life. Terrified that she will make Jake run for the hills once he really gets to know her, the opposite happens and her infectious personality only seems to draw him closer the more time they spend together. The one thing Casey is afraid of is that once Jake realizes she’s just a novelty and he grows tired of her “newness” he will go back to the blonde models he once slept with and she will walk away broken hearted.

Jake loves that Casey doesn’t hold anything back and sees him as the person he is, not the rockstar or broken child the media portrays. Casey adores the passionate man who is a multiplicity of layers she keeps discovering with the more time they spend together. Can the two survive the obstacles that society will continue to throw at them as they pursue a relationship together?

Cake isn’t your ordinary rock and roll story with the everyday pressures about groupies throwing themselves at the star and the heroine learning how to deal with the pressures of how to fit in. The mix of Jake surviving a childhood trauma added another level that was unique. The chemistry was great between the characters and I thoroughly enjoyed the mixture of family members, Bengtsson left a lot of openings for spin offs. What made this a 4 star read for me was at the beginning, there was a lot of inner-dialogue that could have been broken up and spread throughout the book. Background that, yes, was relevant, but could have been sprinkled throughout the book. It made the first chapter drag when Casey could have met Jake sooner. Once she did meet Jake the book took right off.
