EXCERPTS

#1

“Do you really go by Elizabeth with everyone?” I ask, enjoying the smooth taste of the vodka. “No nickname?”

“Yeah. Everyone calls me that, except this one cousin who calls me Eliza. I think he felt rebellious when he was younger, you know? And it stuck. With him, anyway.”

She’s probably wrong about her cousin. Elizabeth is too formal a name for this woman. She’s too vivacious, too open and too sexy. She needs a shorter, snappier name.

“But…” She knocks back the second shot of vodka. “You can call me Liza. Nobody calls me that, and I think it suits me better than Elizabeth or Eliza, don’t you?”

I nod, ridiculously pleased I’m going to get my own name for her.

“So what’s your name?” she asks.

“Dominic.”

“Nice. I like it.” She smiles and runs a fingertip along my lips as she leans forward. “Can I call you something else, though?”

I feel the touch like an electric shock. My heart thuds. “Like what?”

“Mine.”

#2

I lose the track of my friends’ conversation as the fine hair at my nape bristles — not unpleasantly — and my gaze lands on the sole bartender on the other side of the counter.

Everything fades away except him.

I’ve met handsome men, hot men, aristocratic men, charming men on both sides of the Atlantic. My family alone has four brothers and four cousins who make women stupid with their looks. Having grown up around such male beauty, I’ve always considered myself immune — able to appreciate it without turning into some kind of infatuated drooler.

But the bartender…

Everything about him is absurd.

The absurd perfection of his bone structure. The absurd blue of his eyes. The absurd firmness of his lips. The absurd muscularity of his big, strong body.

When our gazes collide, I feel like every cell in my body is waking up after a lifetime of slumber. My heart beats a little bit faster, a little bit harder. Blood flows a little quicker, a little hotter.

Is this sexual attraction?

I shake my head inwardly. I’ve felt attraction to guys before. But nothing like this. This man shines like a brilliant gemstone, like the heavens opened up and a halo appeared around him.

Then I remember what Grandpa used to say.

“When I first met your grandmother, I knew she was the one.”

“How?” I asked. An exceptional artist, Grandpa has a propensity for exaggeration and dramatic flair.

“Because she made me forget where I was. Every time I laid eyes on her, nothing else mattered. Colors were brighter, food tasted better, and the air felt cleaner. All because I met her.”

I laughed. “That’s just infatuation, Grandpa.”

He shook his head. “No, no, my little angel. It’s called love. My soul recognized hers.”

I tried not to laugh at such a ridiculous story. On the other hand, Grandpa’s first marriage lasted until the death of his wife in a sailing accident. And by all accounts, they adored each other.

Suddenly Vanessa taps my elbow. “Earth to Elizabeth. Come on.” She tilts her shiny red head toward the bar. “We’re sitting at the counter.”

Apparently the decision has been made. “Okay.” I park my butt across from the bartender, Grandpa’s words about soul mates circling in my head.

Because if this bartender’s mine, he’s popped up at the most inconvenient time and the most inconvenient location.

#3

Elizabeth reaches over and runs her fingers along my thigh. Her scent — vanilla and lavender — tickles my nose. An electric charge sizzles at the base of my spine, and heated blood pumps hard through my veins. “You going to start the car or what?” She smiles, her cheeks flushed.

Logic and good intentions grow fuzzy. I don’t hook up with women I meet at the bar. I want to set a good example for my baby sister so she knows to look for a guy who’ll take her seriously and treat her well. And I’m usually just too busy with life — college courses, taking care of my sister and working two jobs.

But with Elizabeth, none of that matters. The only thing is her being with me…and the undercurrent of instinctive knowledge that if I end this now, she’s going to slip away, never to be seen again.

My mouth dry, I speed toward my place, half an hour from the bar. I don’t run any red lights, but it’s pretty close a couple of times.

She laughs softly. “Love it that you’re impatient.”

“Do you?”

“You want me.”

“What man wouldn’t?”

She grows wistful. “Not everyone wants me.”

“You’ve been with the wrong men.”

She opens her mouth, then instead of saying anything, drags her teeth along her lower lip.

Spring Fever Daddies by Rayanna Jamison

The second standalone book in the Second Chance Ranch Series

Blurb:

Begin as you intend to end. That was my motto.

It was how I had always lived my life.

From the moment my roommate and sometimes fuck buddy Mitch and I arrived back at his childhood home on the second chance ranch, things became clear.

He wanted April. I wanted them both.

I always get what I want.

This time is different. It feels like everything is on the line, and I’m terrified to crash and burn.

Getting what I want isn’t going to be so easy this time around. Mitch has to finally come to terms with the fact that he’s in love with me, and while he’s doing that, we have to convince April to fall in love with both of us. We have to step up and prove that despite all our faults and problems, we are worthy of that love.

It’s a lot, but I begin how I intend to end. With Mitch beside me, April between us, and us as her Daddies.

There are a lot of roadblocks along the way, buy I’m dead set determined to get my happy ending. And I always get what I want

Excerpt:

“Have you ever had a Daddy before?”

The question confused me, and for a moment I thought of my own Dad, before understanding that That wasn’t what he meant. “Not..not like that,” I stammered, blushing profusely. I had never even considered a Daddy figure, but at this moment, God, I wanted one.

“Not like that, huh? You’ve never had a Daddy to snuggle and spoil you , and spank you soundly before tucking you into bed?”

I shook my head, finding myself wishing it was time for dinner instead of time for breakfast. Wanting everything Mitch was offering.

Except that he wasn’t offering. Or, was he?

Even when his giant hand cupped my ass, I wasn’t sure I hadn’t imagined the whole exchange.

My panties were drenched. My chest was heavy, and my breathing was soft but labored.

If it wasn’t real, it was some fantasy.

“I can be your Daddy.” He whispered the words I didn’t even realize I longed to hear.

“I can as well.” The booming voice with its Yankee twang, surprised me and I turned to see Brody filling the doorway. His wide stance filled the French doors, and his arms folded over his chest. The look on his face that lacked tenderness and bode no argument.

I felt the change in Mitch without looking at him.

Brody snapped his fingers. “Two daddies are better than one , little girl. Come upstairs with us, and we’ll show you.”

PRManicMondayBookCover5x8_MEDIUMManic Monday, an all-new hilarious and romantic standalone from Piper Rayne, is LIVE!

The perfect man for me is a blood-sucking lawyer. #pfftwhatever

Been there.

Done that.

Burned the T-shirt.

I didn’t swear off all men after my divorce, but I sure as hell swore off anyone remotely like my ex. On the top of that list? Attorneys. Everyone knows they can’t be trusted.

Now that I’m back in Chicago, my focus is my daughter, my mom and me. I haven’t given up on finding my happily-ever-after, it’s just on hold—indefinitely.

Then I see Reed Warner again, and he weasels his way into every part of my life, not willing to take no for an answer.

In spite of my better judgment I can’t stop thinking about the way his designer suits fit his muscular frame, or the way his blue eyes seem to eat me up with every glance.

You know when you’re on a diet and even hummus seems irresistible? Reed is like the equivalent of chocolate éclair and my willpower is fading fast.

The problem? Not only is he a lawyer…

He was the best man at my wedding.

EXCERPT

“Would you mind keeping this piece steady while I attach it?” he asks, interrupting my reverie.
“No problem.” I take my position opposite him, holding the piece of trim in place against the dresser as he drills screws into the underside so that they remain hidden from view. It’s like magic.
I study him as he works.
He tilts his head this way and that to make sure the piece is level before he starts. Then, he lifts the drill, and taut muscles shine with sweat as he drives each screw into the boards with purpose. His forearms flex and jump with every movement. And his tattoo calls my eye to follow the bumps and dips of his biceps and triceps.
Wesley Scott is a perfectly sculpted specimen of man. He’s strong. Confident. Capable.
He catches me staring and winks, rewarding me with his rare, crooked grin. I feel myself flush as I quickly look away, totally busted.
No, I don’t mind helping him one bit.

EXCERPT

We both laughed and clinked the plastic together before each taking a sip.
Licking the sweetness from my lips, I lowered my glass with both hands, eyes following it.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Sure, anything.” Logan drained his portion of champagne and set his glass down. Sticking hands in his pockets, he leaned his hip against the freezer to face me.
“Why do you care so much?” I lifted my face, devoid of expression. “I mean about my writing. About my work. All these years, I thought you were this tough, no feelings kind of guy. Yet, you’ve shown so much… I don’t know. Emotion. Why?”
Logan paused, a soft grin on his face, then tilted his head and moved in closer. “I told you before. You don’t know me as well as you think you do.”
Squirming, a little embarrassed, I broke from his gaze and tucked my elbows close to my side, still holding onto my champagne flute with both hands.
“Well I am glad that you’re here.” I took in a deep breath and let it out slow, savoring the moment as I looked to the rich sunset forming outside. Pinks, blues, lavenders. Like cotton candy.
I turned back, Logan’s face only inches from mine.
“Me too,” he answered. Just then, the breeze whipped in through the door. “It probably should be Ryan, though. Right?” Logan pressed his lips tight, leaned back some and looked away towards the sunset.
My stomach clenched at the mention of my husband’s name. “Maybe. But he wouldn’t be toasting with me. That’s for sure.”
Lifting my glass, I drained what was left in it. Logan didn’t miss a beat and reached for the bottle, giving me a refill. I took a sip before continuing.
“And, I doubt he’d care. I don’t think he wants me to succeed at anything; he has no concern for my passions whatsoever. I’m not sure I’ll even tell him about this.”
I went quiet, my head spinning, not only from the phone call and the champagne, but also from the reality of my situation. The thought of Ryan dampened my celebratory mood.
“Hey…” Logan removed the glass from my hands with the tip of his fingers and set it down. “Let’s not talk about him right now. Okay?” Taking my arms, he pulled me close, wrapping them around the back of his waist. Nervous, my heart pounded as I caught the essence of carburetor mixed with his signature musky lemon cologne from his t-shirt. He’d come from working at Monroe Auto, but he somehow smelled good enough to go on a date.
“Okay,” I murmured and looked up at him. He released his hands to hold my face. Rough and calloused from working on cars all his life, his touch was still delicate as he bent, taking my lips in his.
Logan kissed me, light and gentle at first. Like I might break under his touch. But then, he dragged me closer, pressing his body to mine and taking more of me into his mouth, our kiss building intensity.
“I care,” he whispered against my skin.
My body wouldn’t relax fully. We lived on the outskirts of town, but with the garage door open, anyone could see right in. That would start some gossip.
“What’s wrong?” He leaned back, picking up on my tension. Noooo, don’t stop.
I pointed to the open door, then wiped at my wet lips.
He smirked. “That’s easy.” He walked to the side of the door and pressed the CLOSE button. The walk-in door to the outside was still open, but this was enough to conceal us.
He took back his place with me, and I let go, running my hand up his back, feeling the warmth of his skin. A moment later, Logan drew back again, his eyes fixed down into mine. He kept his hands tangled behind my head in my long hair.
“He has no idea what he has, Em. The depth of you is incredible. I see it. I see you.”
I squeezed my eyes shut, trying not to cry again. Logan took notice and pulled me to his chest in a hug.
With my eyes still shut, I lifted away. Logan bent, our lips crashing again, before I opened them.  I wanted to stay like this forever.
A minute later, a truck roared outside the garage door. Ryan.
“Shit!” Logan and I broke from each other. I grabbed my glass, clearing my throat; he grabbed his bottle of beer, and we composed ourselves quickly. He stayed close, though, enough to touch the side of my body. We leaned with our backs against the deep freeze as Ryan walked in the side door.
Everything that had just happened–everything that has happened–with Logan had felt right. Unfortunately, that still didn’t make it right.
“What the hell is this?” Once inside, Ryan planted his legs wide and crossed his arms. His face tightened, and he glared between the two of them.

Born and raised on a cattle farm in rural Nebraska, Jen still resides in the Midwest with her husband, three children, two dogs and lots of happy cows. A proclaimed coffee, wine and book snob, her theory of life is that sometimes we have to get lost to find ourselves.

She did. And then wrote about it.

She writes about women, the choices they make and the depth of their life stories because of those choices. Even before the so-called “times-up” and “me-too” women’s movement, bringing a voice to women’s real lives was an important part of her vision and life purpose.

EXCERPT

I jolt awake, momentarily disoriented by the rhythmic beeping coming from my right. Beep. Beep. Beep. Again and again, the sound causes my temples to throb. Even though my eyes are still pinched closed, I know this is not my room, and I am not in my bed. Without warning, the events that led me here flash through my mind: hitting Simon’s truck and the subsequent ambulance ride. I remember the CT scan, and being given pain medication. I must have fallen asleep shortly after that.
I inhale deeply, trying to get my bearings, and cringe at the smell of antiseptic hanging in the air. God, I hate hospitals.
Slowly, I try to blink my eyes open, only to immediately close them again. Whimpering at the brightness of the room, I sink farther into the small, firm mattress before steeling my resolve to try again.
I peel one lid open and hold it, adjusting, before peeling the other open as well. “So bright,” I whine to myself, squinting up at the light above me. My head feels like an entire drumline has taken it as their practice space; the thrumming and pounding is incessant.
With all the strength I can muster, I roll my head to face the far wall of the small hospital room, only to startle at the sight of the most gorgeous man I’ve ever laid eyes on sleeping in the chair in the corner, his light-brown hair messy, his chiseled jaw covered in stubble. “S-Simon?” I whisper, more to myself than to him.
All the same, he jolts like someone took a live wire to his skin. “You’re up?” He lunges from the chair toward me, gently taking my hand in his, scanning my body before bringing his deep-blue eyes to mine. “Are you—fuck, you have no idea how happy I am to see those baby-blue eyes right now. Let me call for your doctor.”
He starts to withdraw his hand from mine, and I let out the most pathetic whimper, halting him. “Don’t go,” I beg.
“Not going anywhere. Just gonna hit the call button,” he assures me, leaving me feeling foolish, even though that wasn’t his intention.

I should have stayed away from her. I knew better.
But instead, I treated every single day like it was my damn birthday, and she was a luscious devil’s food cake slathered in creamy icing.

Helena:
I’d spent my entire life being cautious, never took any real risks.
And I did it to shield the people I loved from needless worry.
To protect them.

He didn’t want children.
She couldn’t imagine a life without them —Home

Gabe

I didn’t want anyone even breathing on her—no son of a bitch touching her. I didn’t give a shit how innocent it was. When I saw her on the dance floor, moving seductively, that gorgeous body in nothing but a skimpy little dress and those shoes… Oh, God, those shoes

I was already on my feet when Danilo said, “Let’s go.”

In one easy move, her fingers landed on my face, robbing me of breath. Fuckohfuckohfuck.

I pinned her arms at her hips so she couldn’t touch me again. Kept her just far enough away that she couldn’t stoke my arousal.

If this had been anyone else, any other woman who had me this worked up, I’d have slid my tongue down her throat by now, rocked her hips against my swollen cock until she was begging me to find someplace where we could be alone. But this was Helena. This was complicated. Too damn complicated

Every last drop of blood must have left my brain, because I pulled her closer. I don’t remember actually doing it. I only remember the warmth of her pressed against me and the sultry scent of vanilla floating from her skin, swirling with the heady stench of sweat and sex wafting around us. My head was spinning.

Releasing her arms, I threaded my fingers deep into her silky hair, palming the curve of her head. Forcing myself to be gentle. My free hand held her firmly against me, lifting her slightly, and when she wiggled closer, grinding into my cock, I nearly lost it.

I was half aware of people moving around us, of my heart pounding relentlessly in my ears, but all I really knew was her. Everything else was just background noise. I needed her. I needed her bad, and I needed her now. Right now.

At that moment, I didn’t give a shit about Professor Tines’s warning, didn’t care that we were in the middle of a club in Rome, didn’t care if she was an innocent virgin. I wanted her. Wanted her more than I’d ever wanted anyone.

I planted my mouth on hers, full-on, in a lewd, demanding kiss. And when she moaned, I slid my tongue over hers, gliding the tip over the smooth roof of her mouth. Holding her firmly against my erection, I swallowed her moans.

Using both hands, she pulled my head down to deepen the kiss and I eagerly complied, tasting the fruity wine lingering at the back of her throat.

Only when Danilo shoved my arm when he was leaving the dance floor did I realize the music had stopped. Dazed, and desperate to recover from my Helena-induced stupor, I pulled away clumsily. She whimpered, and I stood there, sucking air, trying to regain some semblance of self-control.

About Eva

After being a confirmed city-girl for more than thirty-five years, Eva moved to beautiful Western Massachusetts in 2014. There, she found herself living in the woods with no job, no friends (unless you count the turkey, deer, and coyote roaming the backyard), and no children underfoot, wondering what on earth she’d been thinking. But as it turned out, it was the perfect setting to take all those yarns spinning in her head and weave them into romantic tales.

When she’s not writing, trying to squeeze information out of her tight-lipped sons, or playing with the two cutest dogs you’ve ever seen, Eva’s creating chapters in her own love story.
