A second chance romance. Would Wade Rycroft allow Geneva Harris back into his life, much less allow her back into his heart? Fifteen years ago she broke his heart when she chose another man, but when Genny seeks his help, he has to set his heartbreak aside and look past what she did to see if she is worth helping. When he discovers the truth of what she did to help his family, the guilt that bubbles up over what happened to separate them almost consumes him. As much as he wants to get her back in his life can he make amends enough to mend their broken fences.
“You can’t tell her you love her and magically make her whole again. This is not a problem solved with a kiss and a cuddle.”
Geneva Harris loved Wade Rycroft with all her heart. Unfortunately, she lived a life of hell married to another man. After fifteen years she was almost free, but now she needs Wade’s help. He works for a security company, McKay-Taggart, that should provide her with the protection she needs to finally escape the demons of her past and give her son the future he deserves. Now if Wade would only cooperate and do what she tells him to do instead of continually bringing up the past, or wanting a future everything would be perfect.
“It was all going to fall apart. It didn’t matter how good she’d been, how much she’d suffered. One evil man wanted her and that shaped her entire f**king live.”
Together they both have to fight a monster, figuratively and literally. Only then will they be able to move on from the hurt of the past and think about a potential future, together. Joined by numerous couples who have fought their own battles they learn that you don’t have to suffer alone. Treatment and help is available and it’s not something you win overnight, but a process that takes time.
I love the strong women who continually support each other in Lexi’s books along with the strong men who fall at their knees who support their women. I think it’s one of the many reasons I come back to her books over and over again.
Protected was an easy read in one afternoon and so darn good. You should know by now I love both quirky secondary characters as much as I love Lexi Blake’s worlds. Protected is full of my favorites; as she combined not only people from Masters and Mercs, but also from Topped, along with a few people from her Bliss series that she writes under the pen name of Sophie Oak. I was reminiscing hard over my favorite storylines as they popped throughout this story and loving every moment of it.
Protected has to be one of my favorite novellas of Lexi’s. Thank you, thank you, thank you for having so much Ian Taggart in this book. He is still my favorite character of all time.
“The boss has stepped away for a good ten minutes, talking on his phone, probably gossiping like the old biddy his massively muscular body hid inside.”
Can I say again how much I love Ian Taggart.
*Protected doesn’t detail abuse, but it is mentioned. If it is a trigger, by all means you should know that upfront, but also know that if you suffer from abuse or are currently living in an abusive relationship there is help and hope. 1-800-799-SAFE or www.thehotline.org
**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**
