Couldn’t stop reading…OMG!! This book will grip you in a way that will leave you thinking about humanity, kindness, and love on an entirely new level.

People often throw around the phrase “Family is who you make it, not whom you’re related to”, but what if you choose to have no one? What if you choose solidarity? What if you choose a life without shelter, a life without material things, a life without attachments, a life without protection, a life unlike any you’ve ever known? What if you were living a life of penance, and this was how you were punishing yourself for a wrong you felt you committed. There was no jury of your peers sentencing you to live this way, only your guilt, your shame, your own life sentence of wrong doings to make up for.

Now imagine trying to live this way anonymously, which let’s face it, most people who are homeless are pretty anonymous, but if you begin doing good deeds and those good deeds inspire those around you to do good deeds for others, perhaps your anonymity might cause someone to take notice. A light may be cast on the one story that sent you into the shadows to begin with, unfortunately by the one person who actually first noticed you for you and not the monster you really are inside. What would you do to hide those secrets?

When someone actually likes you for you, flaws and all, you feel ten feet tall. It doesn’t take a lot to feel a connection, it just takes a spark and when you know a good person, you know. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes that person a while to believe it themselves because when you have nothing, you have nothing to lose, but when you begin to form attachments that’s when things change and begin to mean everything.

Review – The Rebel

I am in love with a new series!! Jennifer Bernard has reeled me in and I’m hooked, I need more and thankfully this is just the beginning so, squee!!, there will be more.

But first let me list why I’m so enamoured with the Rockwells….

1. A big family to fall hopelessly in love with. Jennifer Bernard starts us on a journey from a point where all five Rockwell children are gathered at a young age;  Kai, Griffin, Jake, Isabelle, and Gracie,  already displaying how close knit this family is. She then weaves us to the present, but at the same time reconnecting us with these siblings over and over again so that by the time I’ve finished reading The Rebel, I’m salivating for the next story. I’m so in love with each Rockwell already I can hardly wait.
2. A super buff hero. Period. Nothing else needs to be said. Okay, I will elaborate a little more. But seriously, Kai Rockwell rescues people for a living. Whether it’s from mountains, fires, storms, car accidents, it doesn’t matter. He drifts from job to job risking his life to save others. Damn, if that isn’t hot and overly masculine. However, he does have the tiny problem of…he hasn’t been home in fifteen years and doesn’t really like stability, hence the job drifting, but you know no one is perfect.
3. The Rebel also contains an extremely likeable heroine, Nicole Davidson. She has a huge heart, that not only shows when she’s taking care of Mad Max Rockwell, but when she talks about her disabled sister, Birdie. She is stuck between a rock and a hard place when having to make decisions about her life and Kai makes things that much harder when he arrives. She’s real and so likeable, “The list of things Nicole preferred to do instead of jogging was basically endless. It started with bed and ended with ‘really anything else.’ But her quest to lose ten pounds was ongoing.” Yup, she’s me in the never-ending loop of loving everything else, but still needing to exercise.
4. Lastly, if there was a theme to this story, I’d have to say it would be learning from the naïveté of our youth only increases our wisdom as we age. Oh, I went deep there. I’ll try to sum up. Who hasn’t looked back in their past and reflected over the choices they’ve made? There isn’t a way to go back and correct it (not that I’m aware of yet), but you can learn from past mistakes or even past choices and then move forward hoping to better yourself in the long run. Jennifer Bernard does an excellent job of this type of reflection throughout the story. She doesn’t place blame, or have anyone live with regrets, but instead has beautiful moments of moving forward. It made the story really tender and enjoyable.

In summation, if you love a good series that revolves around a family then pick up The Rebel, you won’t be disappointed.

Summary

Kai Rockwell left home at seventeen years old and didn’t look back. In fifteen years never once did he give thought to the place that was his heritage, a family lodge that went back generations set in the Cascade mountains. Until his siblings called him and told him he needed to come back. It was time for the prodigal son to return home.

Kai didn’t know what to expect when he walked back through the doors of his family home. Nostalgia, maybe. What he didn’t expect was the state of disrepair nor the financial ruin it was sunk into. No one had informed him except to check into the woman who was taking care of their father, Nurse Nicole. Wasn’t it convenient that she just happened to show up at a time when the lodge was falling apart and that she also happened to have a lot of “great ideas” to improve the lodge that Max suddenly seemed to love. Kai may have walked away fifteen years ago, but he wasn’t about to let some ditzy girl waltz in and steal his heritage away.

Nicole loves working at Rocky Peak Lodge as a home health nurse. The scenery has to be the best in the entire world. What she doesn’t like is spying on the family and reporting back to her friend, Felicity, who works for a real estate company who wants to buy out the Rockwell’s family estate. The only reason she’s spying on the family is the bonus Felicity has thrown in the deal when the Rockwell’s sell their multi-million dollar estate. It’s an offer Nicole can’t refuse, especially when she’s footing the bill for her sister’s facility care which costs a small fortune and her daily salary doesn’t cover the cost.  

Risking everything Nicole continues to send back ideas to Felicity all while getting closer to the Rockwell family, especially Kai, the man who intrigues her more than she wants to admit. Her plan didn’t seem so bad when he only promised to stay one month, but as he seems to linger past his original date, so do their feelings. Espionage isn’t a game that was supposed cause so many feelings. Why do the tough choices always have to be so life changing?

EXCERPT 

I swipe my key through the door scanner.  It’s 9:35 p.m and I’m late. After not wanting to come at all, and deliberating the whole thing for over an hour in the shower, I’m finally here.
I’m not really sure why, but what the hell. It can’t hurt, I suppose.
I walk into the gym and take a look around. There are a few guys working out at the back, plus a girl on the treadmill.
Great. He’s not even here.
All that over-analysing for nothing
Damn it.
After making my way onto the treadmill I start walking. I turn up the speed and begin to walk faster. I suppose I’ll have to actually work out then. What an anticlimax. I spent over an hour psyching myself up to be here, and he doesn’t even show up.
Fucking typical.
All men piss me off.
Oh well, it’s his loss.
Turning up the speed, I begin to jog, getting lost in the repetition. But when I look up into the mirror, I see him. There he is. He’s sitting on the weights bench in the corner, and flashing a slow sexy smile my way. He’s wearing a white T-shirt and navy sports shorts.
My stomach dances with excitement. I force him a smile, and then I look down, pretending to be uninterested.
God, he’s so….
He’s probably just a prop in this place. That’s what I would do if I owned a gym: pay gorgeous guys to hang out and make the girls swoon. It makes good business sense, that’s for sure.
I run for fifteen minutes, and he does weights as he watches me. To be honest, I wish he would look away because I’m dying over here. I can’t run for this long naturally. I’m totally showing off. I may go ass over tit at any moment and skin my knee to the bone.
One man finally leaves the gym, and then five minutes later the other one follows. The group of guys walk out the back, leaving only one woman in the gym who is doing sit ups. His eyes trail over to her, and I wonder is he thinking the same thing as me.
Buzz off, woman. Why are you in the gym so late, stupid?
I stop running and bring the treadmill back to a walking pace. I wipe my face with my towel, grateful when the lady packs up her things and leaves through the front door.
Brock’s eyes find mine in the mirror and a dark smile crosses his face.
Shit. My heart begins to beat faster. I keep walking, and he stands to make his way over to me.
“Hello,” he purrs.
I smile goofily. “Hi.” Why does he have to be so damn sexy? I can’t even pretend to be cool.
He puts his hand over mine on the handrail, and I feel an energy zap between us.
“I’ve been thinking about you all day,” he says.
My eyes hold his as my stomach flips. “Y-you have?” I pant.
He nods slowly, his eyes not leaving mine for a single second.
“What were you thinking about?” I ask.
“I was thinking that I need to talk to you in private.”
God, is he for real?  “Is that so?” I look around the empty gym. “Is that why you had to wait for everyone to leave to come and talk to me?”
“Well, I didn’t want anyone to be suspicious of the two of us talking the other night in the bathroom.”
“Talking?” I smirk. “Is that what you call it?”
He smiles sexily, and my stomach clenches yet again. Don’t smile at me like that.
“Yes.” He pauses as he rolls his lips, as if amused. “It was a very stimulating conversation.”
I smile as I continue to walk.
“For some more than others,” he adds.
Unable to help it, I laugh. “Yes, it was a very stimulating conversation that we had the other night.”
His eyes hold mine. “Did you enjoy it?”
What’s it going to be? I get a vision of Simon last night with that girl.
Sink or swim.
“I did.” Our eyes are locked. “Very much, actually.”
Oh, this guy makes me want to be a dirty whore.
Satisfaction flashes across his face and he licks his lips. He runs his hand up my forearm, his eyes following his touch. “I have something else to tell you.”
I act surprised. “You do?”
“I do.”
“What is it?”
“I can’t tell you here, Pocket.” His eyes rise to my lips.
“Why not?” I feel the burn of his gaze.
“It’s private.”
He takes his hand off my arm, and it causes me to frown. I hate the loss of his touch. “So, where do you want to tell me this private information?” I ask as I play along.
“We should probably talk where we talked last time.” He rolls his lips to hide his smile, he likes this game.
“Really?” I widen my eyes.
He nods slowly. “Really.”
I continue to walk on the treadmill.
“So, I’m going to go into the discussion room now.”
“The discussion room?” I widen my eyes and laugh. “You are something else.”
“I know,” he chuckles, and then gestures up to the ceiling. I look up, following his direction.
There’s a camera…
Shit.
“I’m going to go into the discussion room, and in five minutes, you should do the same.”
“But, they’ll see us?” I whisper.
“No, they won’t. Once you come into the bathroom, you just have to stay in there for five minutes. If we don’t enter or leave together, the tapes won’t be looked at. Not unless there is an incident and they have to be watched back.
“Oh.” I frown, and without another word he disappears up the hall with his gym bag. I walk for another five minutes with my heart beating out of control. This is so naughty, so freaking hot, and I have to say, so out of character for me that it’s not even funny.
I’ll just go and talk to him—see what he has to say. I hope he kisses me again. His kiss was to die for. Who the heck is this guy, anyway?
I would never do this. I am not the sort of girl who meets up with guys in a public bathroom.  My eyes flicker to the hallway as my excitement runs through me.
Am I?
I hit stop on the treadmill with my heart hammering in my chest. I take my towel and drink bottle, and then I walk up the hall to the bathrooms. I look up and see the camera at the end of the hall positioned so it shows all of the five bathroom doors clearly. I drop my head to hide my face.
As long as I don’t walk back out, he said I’m fine.
God, if anyone ever knew I was doing this, I’d die.
I walk to the end door and take the handle in my hand. I pause for a moment and close my eyes. My heart is banging, and I look back up the hall one more time. Should I go? No. Just do it.
I open the door and rush in, quickly closing the door behind me. I flick the lock and turn around.
The room is filled with steam and the shower screen is open. Brock is naked in the shower when he turns to face me.
His large shoulders and chest have soap over them, and his hair is already wet. His stomach is rippled with muscles, and his huge hard cock hangs heavily between his legs.
He smiles sexily. “Took your time, Pocket.”
Oh, dear God. Holy. Fucking. Shit.
“Brock!” I frown as I stare at him. “What the hell are you doing?”
I glance back to the door, damn it. I can’t leave for a few minutes.
He looks at me casually and rubs the soap in across his chest. “Taking a shower, what does it look like?”
“You’re incredible.” I shake my head in disgust. “I’m leaving right now.”
“Why?” He gives me a slow sexy smile and holds his hands out to the side. “Taking a shower is a perfectly natural thing. I wanted to be clean for our conversation.”
Bastard.
“You want to have a conversation with me with,” I gesture to his groin, “with your dick hanging out.”
He looks down at himself, and then back up at me. “Does my dick offend you?”
“Yes,” I gasp. “Your dick offends me.”
I glance down again. That is the most beautiful dick I’ve ever seen. Okay, sure, I haven’t seen many, but I’m still sure it’s the most perfect one there is. For fuck’s sake, this guy is so over confident, I don’t even have words to describe him, and why the hell is it turning me on?
This is un-fucking-believable. How on earth did I get myself into this situation?
Brock continues to rub soap over his chest, eventually lathering his groin area up, too. I have to concentrate on not looking down again.
“Why?” he asks.
I frown. “Because… because…” I look around as I search for the right choice of words. “It’s the assumption you make that I am comfortable with you being naked when I’m not.” I shake my head and throw my hands in the air. “I’m so not.”
“If it makes you feel more comfortable, I am completely fine with you taking your clothes off, too.” He shrugs casually. “You know, for our discussion.”
I smirk. Of all the hide. “You’re an idiot.”
He smiles that sexy smile again, and I feel my insides begin to melt. “I prefer to think I’m just honest.”
“How is this being honest?”
“Well.” He pauses as a moment as he soaps his groin up again.

I look up at Cam and meet his eyes, brimming with secrets. I need answers, and I need them now.

No more secrets, Cam.

“What’s going on?”

The man in my arms doesn’t answer with his words. Instead, he takes hold of the edge of my towel and pulls it from my body. I gasp at the sensation of our skin pressing intimately together. I brace myself against his chiseled arms, digging my fingers into his biceps for purchase.

He isn’t done. He lifts his hands, one to my hip, one to my cheek. His thumb draws a small circle on my exposed hip bone. With the side of his knuckle, he traces the outline of my lower lip. I stay very, very still so he won’t notice the slight shudder racing down my spine.

“Sir?” The security guard phones in from downstairs. “There’s a woman here insisting she needs to speak with you.”

“Name?”

“Josephine Mays.”

“Let her in.”

I turn off the intercom and unlock my office door. A few minutes pass before the door flies open. Josie barges in, her hands fisted and an angry light in her eyes.

“You are an asshole,” she snaps.

“I’ve been told.”

“How dare you pull that kind of stunt?”

“It’s the truth.”

“And we both know damned well you brought it up only because I’m involved.” She tosses her backpack and art portfolio onto a chair. She’s trembling with anger. “I don’t care what you think about me, but bringing the people of this town into our personal shit is low, even for you.”

My shoulders tense. “Even for me? What do you know about me?”

“Nothing anymore.” She slams her hands to her hips, her features twisting. “But I used to know everything about you. Do you remember that? Then you walked out on me right when I needed you the most, proving you were never the man I thought you were. Now I find out that you run this company like a dictator, you’re crushing independent businesses and putting people out of work, and you’re publicly trying to stop me from creating a mural that’s intended for both this town and my parents. What the hell happened to you?”

“You happened to me.”

The words fly out of my mouth before I can stop them. The pencil I’m holding breaks in two with the force of my grip.

Josie steps back, her eyes widening. Her dark hair is windblown, her cheeks flushed, her chest heaving under her old army jacket. I’d once had the right to comb her hair back from her forehead, slide my palm over her neck before edging my fingers into her V-necked T-shirt…

My phone had not stopped buzzing all night long. With my Shiraz as my only company, the beautiful voice of Norah Jones as my backdrop, and the memories of Daimen and Arden together in their office, I stared aimlessly at the same scuff mark on my wall. Hell, shit and about a dozen other curse words flitted through my mind at Daimen taking Arden over his desk. Yep, of course, Daimen would top Arden. That was not surprising nor was how my body reacted to them. Two hot men together. Forget Pornhub, I’d just replay them in my mind forever.

When the ring tone assigned to Andrew started to chime, I reached for my cell. Freaking hell, I had twenty missed calls from Arden and Daimen.

“Ell, you okay?” No hellos or formalities, Andrew worked on facts, and in his tone, that was what he was after.

I wanted the blonde.

I have a bad habit of always being attracted to women who are unavailable. Emotionally unavailable. I don’t know why I do that or what it is. If it’s just as simple as wanting what I can’t have, or some deep-seated bullshit about needing to win because I’m one of five kids from a family that was the town joke.

It’s also a protective measure because I’m not parading a bunch of women through my son’s life. I keep it casual. But I could do that with unattached women too, though probably not as easily.

So mostly I think it’s just because I’m an asshole.

Whatever the reasons, it had gotten me into trouble in the past, and as I watched the rich blonde, Bella Bigelow, stumble up to the bar totally drunk on Friday night, I knew I was doing it again. Chasing trouble. I had met her once before and I had thought she was fucking gorgeous. All long legs and tan skin and juicy tits. A perfect face with a lean nose and plump lips that I wanted to suck on.

Her sister was fucking my twin brother.

But her sister wasn’t engaged to be married.

She was.

“What can I get you, Bella?” I asked, leaning on my elbows on the bar top so I would be closer to her. She smelled like a rich girl. All lotions and perfume and expensive clothes. “Sure.” I lifted up a glass and poured vodka in it, reminding myself that while I liked unavailable girls, I didn’t like drunk girls. Not in bed anyway. Too sloppy, too limp. I liked naughty girls who dove into misbehaving with their full wits about them. And their mouths open.

Drunk girls gave the worst blow jobs. It was a proven fact.

“Here you go.” After squirting in the cranberry juice, I slid the glass to her. “Seven bucks.”

“Put it on my tab.” She flicked her long hair over her shoulder and turned to go.

“You closed out your tab,” I reminded her. “Last round.”

She paused and frowned at me. “Then why do you still have my credit card?”

“I don’t.” Her platinum express credit card that read Bradley Alexander, presumably belonging to the rich fiancé, had been returned to her at least fifteen minutes earlier. “I gave it back to you.”

“No, you didn’t.” Now she just sounded belligerent. “What are you trying to pull? Are you trying to steal my credit card?”

That pissed me off. “No. I am not trying to steal your credit card. I gave it back to you. Check your purse.”

“I don’t have a purse.”

“Well, it had to appear from somewhere,” I drawled, using my typical charming voice, not wanting her to see that inside I was seething. My whole life people had been accusing me of shit just because I was a Jordan brother and my father was a thief and a career criminal. I resented the fucking hell out of it. “Maybe you pulled it out of your tight little ass.”

Her jaw dropped. She looked outraged. Yet . . . I knew she found me attractive. I had been noticing her giving me signals all night. She gave me sidelong glances. Her eyelashes batted. She licked her lips. I don’t think she even knew she was doing it, but her body language said she was curious about me. About me in her.

She took a huge gulp of her drink then shook her finger at me. “You can’t talk to me like that.”

“And you can’t steal that drink,” I said mildly. “Someone has to pay for it, and it’s not going to be me.”

“Put it on my tab,” she said. “God, you’re such a local loser.”

There are a lot of things she could have said that wouldn’t have bothered me. But that . . . that got under my skin. It was an old wound and she had just dashed salt on it with her pretentious stare and cutting words.

She stole the drink, whether she realized it or not. I had to assume she was too drunk to know where her credit card was and I could have let that slide. But once she purposely insulted me, I knew I wasn’t going to do the right thing.

Nope. I wanted to fuck her.

And I was going to make her want to fuck me.

“How about this drink is on me,” I said. “By the way, congratulations on your upcoming marriage. I wish you a very long life of happiness with your groom.”

Bella stopped and turned, a troubled look darting across her face briefly. She was wearing a romper with silky straps and a low V-cut in the front. Her hand fluttered over her exposed skin. “Are you making fun of me?” she asked.

I shook my head. “No. Just thinking your fiancé is one lucky motherfucker that he gets to make love to you every night.”

She looked shocked. And aroused. Her chest was heaving. I could see her nipples through the thin fabric. She saw my eyes drop.

But she didn’t say a word. She just clutched her drink and disappeared into the crowd, walking very fast.

I smiled as I adjusted my now hard cock behind the bar.

I gave it four days before she was willing to fuck me.
