I am in love with a new series!! Jennifer Bernard has reeled me in and I’m hooked, I need more and thankfully this is just the beginning so, squee!!, there will be more.
But first let me list why I’m so enamoured with the Rockwells….
- A big family to fall hopelessly in love with. Jennifer Bernard starts us on a journey from a point where all five Rockwell children are gathered at a young age; Kai, Griffin, Jake, Isabelle, and Gracie, already displaying how close knit this family is. She then weaves us to the present, but at the same time reconnecting us with these siblings over and over again so that by the time I’ve finished reading The Rebel, I’m salivating for the next story. I’m so in love with each Rockwell already I can hardly wait.
- A super buff hero. Period. Nothing else needs to be said. Okay, I will elaborate a little more. But seriously, Kai Rockwell rescues people for a living. Whether it’s from mountains, fires, storms, car accidents, it doesn’t matter. He drifts from job to job risking his life to save others. Damn, if that isn’t hot and overly masculine. However, he does have the tiny problem of…he hasn’t been home in fifteen years and doesn’t really like stability, hence the job drifting, but you know no one is perfect.
- The Rebel also contains an extremely likeable heroine, Nicole Davidson. She has a huge heart, that not only shows when she’s taking care of Mad Max Rockwell, but when she talks about her disabled sister, Birdie. She is stuck between a rock and a hard place when having to make decisions about her life and Kai makes things that much harder when he arrives. She’s real and so likeable, “The list of things Nicole preferred to do instead of jogging was basically endless. It started with bed and ended with ‘really anything else.’ But her quest to lose ten pounds was ongoing.” Yup, she’s me in the never-ending loop of loving everything else, but still needing to exercise.
- Lastly, if there was a theme to this story, I’d have to say it would be learning from the naïveté of our youth only increases our wisdom as we age. Oh, I went deep there. I’ll try to sum up. Who hasn’t looked back in their past and reflected over the choices they’ve made? There isn’t a way to go back and correct it (not that I’m aware of yet), but you can learn from past mistakes or even past choices and then move forward hoping to better yourself in the long run. Jennifer Bernard does an excellent job of this type of reflection throughout the story. She doesn’t place blame, or have anyone live with regrets, but instead has beautiful moments of moving forward. It made the story really tender and enjoyable.
In summation, if you love a good series that revolves around a family then pick up The Rebel, you won’t be disappointed.
Summary
Kai Rockwell left home at seventeen years old and didn’t look back. In fifteen years never once did he give thought to the place that was his heritage, a family lodge that went back generations set in the Cascade mountains. Until his siblings called him and told him he needed to come back. It was time for the prodigal son to return home.
Kai didn’t know what to expect when he walked back through the doors of his family home. Nostalgia, maybe. What he didn’t expect was the state of disrepair nor the financial ruin it was sunk into. No one had informed him except to check into the woman who was taking care of their father, Nurse Nicole. Wasn’t it convenient that she just happened to show up at a time when the lodge was falling apart and that she also happened to have a lot of “great ideas” to improve the lodge that Max suddenly seemed to love. Kai may have walked away fifteen years ago, but he wasn’t about to let some ditzy girl waltz in and steal his heritage away.
Nicole loves working at Rocky Peak Lodge as a home health nurse. The scenery has to be the best in the entire world. What she doesn’t like is spying on the family and reporting back to her friend, Felicity, who works for a real estate company who wants to buy out the Rockwell’s family estate. The only reason she’s spying on the family is the bonus Felicity has thrown in the deal when the Rockwell’s sell their multi-million dollar estate. It’s an offer Nicole can’t refuse, especially when she’s footing the bill for her sister’s facility care which costs a small fortune and her daily salary doesn’t cover the cost.
Risking everything Nicole continues to send back ideas to Felicity all while getting closer to the Rockwell family, especially Kai, the man who intrigues her more than she wants to admit. Her plan didn’t seem so bad when he only promised to stay one month, but as he seems to linger past his original date, so do their feelings. Espionage isn’t a game that was supposed cause so many feelings. Why do the tough choices always have to be so life changing?
