Review – Would Be King by Kim Karr

Would Be King (Standalone)
by Kim Karr (Author)

This review is from: February 20, 2019 By Kay Daniels (Kindle Edition-Goodreads)
Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Heat Level:🔥🔥🔥

This is the first book I’ve read by Kim Karr. I enjoyed her fast paced writing style and the quirky characters she brought to life. There were moments where I felt the fantasy of the story had me questioning if this was really possible in reality (I know I’m reading fiction and I should just go with it, but I don’t know how else to describe losing the moment, aside from just tossing it out there.)

I love that this particular Royal story had a ginger haired hero (yeah gingers!!) Max is even more endearing with his Prince Harry look-a-likeness.

Everyone wants someone to love them for themselves; not for their money, not for their fame, not for their privilege, not because of who they are, but simply for the person they are inside. Max stumbles upon Gigi, who actually has no idea who he is or where he comes from, aside that he is her new boss at the magazine Bombshell where she is to begin working. He is enamored of her boldness at basically telling him off and enjoys the brief time he spends with her before she discovers whom he actually is.

Gigi needs her job to pay her bills, live her life, well, basically survive in the city. When a stranger enters the same cab she does and then also happens to go to the same building she does, on her first day on the job no less (stalkerish much) Sure, he’s amazingly hot, and she might have kissed him, as payment for the cab ride, but she wouldn’t have done anything more, except she’s a bit upset when she discovers the hot guy from the cab is also her new boss. To top matters off, he’s not only her boss, he just so happens to be a prince.

Things go topsy-turvy in Gigi’s world and Max is feeling things he hasn’t felt, well ever. These two couldn’t be from more different worlds, but when you have a connection, you’ll do just about anything to keep it.

EXCERPT

CHAPTER ONE
COLTON

What the fuck am I doing here? That’s the question that keeps on running through my head as I circulate around the governor’s ball. Yeah, the fucking governor’s ball. It’s so not my scene, but it’s the sort of event that opens doors. You get seen at a place like this, and the money in the room knows your business is trustworthy.
I fit in because I force myself to, but my suit itches and irritates me. I’d be so much more comfortable in jeans and a tool belt, but as the owner of Colton Blackwell Industries, I find myself in a suit way more often than I’d like.
I smile politely and nod as a woman dripping in diamonds and wearing a little too much of over-expensive foreign scent tells me her issues with the current political system for the fourth time. I’m trying to figure out how the fuck I can get away from her without being outright rude, when I see her. A vision. An actual fucking angel.
I can only see her from the back, but the way her black cocktail dress hugs her hips makes her ass captivate me. I feel my cock stiffening as I look her over. She’s tall, but she’s not one of those girls who try to shrink themselves. She has her shoulders back, her head held high. She balances the tray of champagne on her hand with ease, moving through the crowd with a quiet grace. The electric-blue streak in her jet-black hair makes her look exotic, like she knows how to kick back and some fun.
I have no idea what the woman talking to me is saying. From the second my eyes set on that waitress, there’s been no room in my head for anything else. I see myself walking up behind her, taking the tray from her, and throwing it to one side. I stand behind her, push her dress up, and rip away her panties. I bend her over the table and fuck her senseless.
“Mr. Blackwell? Are you all right?”
Hearing my name pulls me out of the fantasy and I turn back to the conversation. I fake a smile.
“Yes. Sorry, I felt a little dizzy for a moment there,” I say. “Would you excuse me? I think I need a bit of air.”
I walk away before she has a chance to reply, and I’m sure I offended her, but it would surely offend her more if she happened to glance down and see I had a hard-on. I slip into the bathroom and lock the door, leaning back against it, waiting it out until my cock goes down. I want to jerk off, to let my fantasies run wild as I picture the waitress. If the front of her is even half as pleasing on my eye as the back, then fuck me am I in trouble if I see her again.
I am shocked at the reaction she caused in me. I haven’t so much as glanced at a woman in almost two years. There’s no deep reason for it, no skeleton in my closet. I just got sick of being part of the dating scene. It’s a mess of gold diggers, social climbers, and women with whom I just had nothing in common and no chemistry.
But her? She awoke a side of me I thought was gone for good. The side of me that wants to make her scream my name through her raw throat as she comes for the third and fourth time. The side that makes me want to taste her pussy, claim it as mine and fuck her all day, every day.
Thinking this way is doing nothing to get my hard-on to go away, and I resign myself to the fact that I’m going to have to jerk off in the governor’s bathroom. Not something I ever saw myself doing. But then, I didn’t know that such a rare beauty existed, that such fire could course through my body and make me lose complete control.
I take care of my business and clean my cock with some toilet paper. I flush it away and wash my hands. I walk back out into the room. I stand on the edges, scanning the room, but I don’t see her. Instead I see an ocean of wealthy, glamorous, small-minded, fake people—the in crowd.
I can fake the smiles and feign interest in things I don’t give a rat’s ass about, but I’ll never be one of them. Not really. I don’t want to be. I want Colton Blackwell Industries to flourish, and I like the fact I’m only twenty-nine and already a millionaire, but it hasn’t changed who I am. And who I am is not one of these people. I’m just a normal guy who turned his passion into a business. I was shocked when the governor called me and asked me to complete a large extension on one of his properties. I was even more surprised when he personally oversaw the job. And the last thing I expected was an invite to his ball. I mean, come on. Like, what the actual fuck?
It’s been a whole lot of surprises, and the most surprising part of it all is my reaction to the waitress. Part of me wants to stay right here until I see her again, but part of me wants to turn around, leave, and try to forget her. That won’t be easy, but I swore off women and I have no intention of that changing. Just because she looks so damn good in a dress doesn’t mean she’ll be different than the rest, and I have no intention of getting involved with her or anyone else.
I decide to give it another half an hour and then slip away. To leave too early would be seen as a snub on the governor, and I’m not an idiot. I know that, as much as I hate this fake shit, to land big projects, you have to know the right people. I decide to go out on the balcony and get some fresh air like I said I was.
I start to cross the room, nodding hello at the few faces I recognize as I go. I am halfway across when my cell phone buzzes in my pocket. I fish it out and look down at the screen. Before I even register who it is, I feel someone collide with me.
A loud clatter fills the air, and I feel champagne soaking into my expensive suit. I stand there, frozen in time. Not because of the champagne, but because I find myself face to face with my girl.
Her face is a mask of horror, but she is still beautiful. She has big brown doe eyes that stare back at me with the same intensity I am staring at her. Her lips are full, red and sensuous, and I can’t help imagining how they would feel wrapped around my cock. She looks every bit as good from the front as she did from the back. Her breasts aren’t big, but they are perky, and I want to caress them, to pull them into my mouth. I feel my cock starting to rise again.
I remind myself that I’m done with dating, but something tells me this waitress will break that resolve without trying. There’s something special about her. Something that scares me. Because when I look at her, I don’t see a quick fuck and a goodbye. I see a lifetime.

CHAPTER TWO
ARIA

I hate being a waitress. There, I said it. The thing is, I need this job. The pay is reasonable and the tips make it good money. Good enough to pay for business school and cover my bills and not intense enough that I can’t get any studying done.
The most annoying thing about waitressing is that even though I hate it, I’m pretty good at it. I look good enough in a tight black dress, I can be unobtrusive, and I have decent skills when it comes to balancing overloaded drinks trays on my hands. It’s not my passion, though. My passion is business, but I want to learn the ropes before I dive in. I’m only twenty-one; I have plenty of time to do this the right way.
I walk around the room with my tray of drinks, smiling politely, subtly collecting up empty glasses, and generally wishing I was anywhere but here.
“Excuse me, miss,” someone behind me calls.
I turn my head and realize they are talking to one of the other waitresses. I turn back the way I’m walking, but it’s too late. I collide with a man. The tray flies from my hand, hundreds of dollars’ worth of glassware crashes to the ground, and the champagne from all those glasses soaks him.
I freeze, looking at the mess I made. And then my eyes meet his. His eyes are dark brown, almost black. They are stormy and dangerous and utterly addictive. I feel a rush of wetness between my legs as his piercing gaze locks on to mine. Great. I’m practically coming in my panties and he’s going to yell at me. The more I look at him, the wetter and more flustered I get.
I wish I spotted him sooner, like before I’d doused him in expensive champagne. Not that it matters. Someone like him wouldn’t waste their time with a waitress. And besides, I have a boyfriend and I’m not the kind of girl who cheats. I’m generally not the kind of girl who gets wet looking at strangers, either.
I manage to pull my gaze from his long enough to take in the expensive suit I ruined and the taut muscles beneath it. I feel myself tingling as I take him in.
I realize that the crashing sound of the tray falling to the floor has caused everyone in the room to fall silent. I feel heat start to flush my cheeks. I wait for him to make a scene. I am so fired. I don’t know what to do. Should I run for a towel? Clean up the glass? I should at least apologize.
“I … I’m so sorry,” I stammer.
My words break the spell, and the tantrum never comes. The man gives me a half shrug and smiles, a smile that lights up his eyes and sends another shiver running through me. He crouches down and begins to pick up the pieces of broken glass. I see the governor rushing toward us. He nods subtly to another waiter, who takes the hint: get the mess cleaned up. The conversation in the room starts up again as the other guests realize they’re staring.
The governor reaches us. “Colton, I’m so sorry about this.”
He doesn’t give Colton a chance to respond before he turns to me.
“What’s your name?” he demands.
“Aria. Aria Stevens, sir,” I whisper.
“Well, Aria Stevens, it’s time for you pack your things and get out of here. And I’ll make sure you never work in this town again. You’re a disgrace.”
I feel tears flood my eyes. I need this job.
“I …” I start.
I stop, knowing I won’t be able to say any more without crying. Colton glares at the governor and then turns to me. He smiles and holds out his hand.
“Hi. I’m Colton Blackwell,” he says. “And I’d love to have you.”

This isn’t how our story ends.
No. This murder we’ve just committed?
This is how our story truly begins . . .

I told myself I was going to save her.

I didn’t realize what a lie that was.

This neurosis has sunk in too deep. All it took was one glimpse of another man inside her for the beast that murdered Barnard to finish consuming me.

I’ve turned her into killer.

Just like me.

With every corroded, toxicity-infested sin laid bare between us, all that’s left is revenge.

And the chasm of diabolical need that tethers us.

A need to consume each other.
A need to make our enemies pay.
They stole seven years from us. Every ounce of sanity we had left.
Now, we’re going to steal everything from them.

Most of all, we won’t stop until every single one of them is dead.

I told myself I was going to save Lexi . . . in reality, I’ve finished ruining her.

And she would have it no other way.

Warning: this series is not for everyone. As the story progresses, dark themes are explored that might be a trigger for some. Please read at your own discretion. Definitely 18+.

Breaking a Billionaire’s Rules, a laugh-out-loud romantic comedy by New York Times bestselling author Annika Martin

Max Hilton is my high school nemesis turned billionaire. And tomorrow I deliver his lunch order. In a cat costume.

You know he’s going to love it. He’ll smile that smirky smile, sitting there all superior in his gleaming tower, the wealthiest and most notorious playboy in all of New York, the king of everything.

Turns out it wasn’t curiosity that killed the cat—it was mortification.

I’m almost ready to quit my lunch delivery job, but then my roommate tosses me a copy of The Max Hilton Playbook: Ten Golden Rules for Picking up the Hottest Girl in the Room.

It’s the book that catapulted him to stardom. And it’s my new bible.

I’m going to use his own techniques against him. I’ll wrap him around my little finger, bring him to his knees, and crush his steely heart. Call it payback for all the single girls who had to endure legions of losers wielding his legendary tactics.

But seeing Max every day, I’m discovering a side of him
I didn’t even know existed–he’s not the jerky guy I thought he was. He has
this smile he shows only to me, and it melts my heart. His touch sends shivers
down my spine. And those forbidden kisses are driving me wild.

Falling for him was not in my plan.

Excerpt:

“Are we going with cheesy puffs today?” I ask.

“Cheesy puffs,” he says hoarsely.

“Good job,” I say. “You made an excellent choice. And just for that, you get an extra bag!”

He tightens his jaw as I snatch up an extra bag.

I’m keeping him off-balance. I feel like I’m really nailing his system today. I head right for him, all the way around his desk, holding his gaze, because that’s what you do to show a dog that you’re in charge.

It hits me here that holding a man’s gaze and walking steadily toward him, never looking away, is also an incredibly sexy thing to do. Every inch of my skin feels alive with excitement.

He swivels away from his desk as I near, facing me with that strangely serious expression. His shirt cuffs are rolled partway up his muscular forearms. His hands rest on his hard thighs, fingers relaxed. Nails trimmed short. Pianist-short. Some habits die hard.

And those thumbs. They’re the same thumbs he stuck in his belt loops while he sang with all of that sweet goofiness during that lost summer. Though science tells us that the cells of the body replace themselves over time—nine years for an entirely new body. So he really is a different person in every way.

I stop in front of him, heart jackhammering in my chest, remembering the way he’d sing to me during that lost summer.

Even when there was a full auditorium, it was as if he was singing to me and me alone, gaze dancing under that floppy hat. The song was about young, hopeful love. It’s how I felt that summer.

It meant nothing to him. A dalliance of proximity. The second we were back at school, he returned to his cold and cynical mode. Too cool for me.

Quizzically, he tilts his head. “Mia?”

Have I been standing there weirdly long?

I think back to his book. If you feel your control slipping, simply give her another reward for something.

“And as a reward for extra predictable behavior…” I toss one bag onto his desk and pull open the other one with a loud crinkle-snap.

His eyes flare.

I remove one puff from the bag and hold it out to him. “Open,” I whisper, pulse racing. “Open for your prize.”

He watches me sternly. Opening for his prize is the last thing he’s going to do. Nobody pushes Max Hilton around.

The book doesn’t have instructions for outright rebellion. The book doesn’t say how sexy that might be. How a person’s beauty can squeeze deep into your belly. How you might really want to kiss him. To straddle him and sink into him and make him remember. Make him come back.

“That’s not open.” I nudge his lower lip with the cheese puff. “Do better,” I say.

He grabs my wrist.

My breath quickens.

His big, warm hand, encircles my wrist snugly and completely. His challenging gaze deepens, like he can see right into me.

The bright orange cheese puff falls from my fingers.

Slowly, he pulls my hand toward him, pinning me with his eyes.

I swallow, mouth dry. “Are you going to eat my fingers instead?” I whisper.

He brushes his lips over my knuckle, soft and warm and smooth as velvet.

His hair was still in the knot it was in last night, but it was flopped over and hanging by his ear. There were loose pieces falling down his neck and one stuck to his eyelash. Sleep and lack of coffee muted the green in his eyes. I watched as he yawned and scratched his chest, his T-shirt lifting to expose skin right above his waistband. His knuckles mindlessly brushed the exposed skin.
I wanna be those knuckles.
He cleared his throat. The barbell in his eyebrow raised when he gave me a look.
“You checking me out, man?”
I snorted, flipping him off. “You wish.”
He winked and turned around, shaking his ass before he started down the hall. “Let’s move, sugar lips! I did not start my day off making breakfast for a lazy hunk of man meat.”
“Are you flirting with me?” I shouted.
“I sure as shit am!”
I chuckled and rolled out of bed, dragging on the first pair of sweats I could find. I trudged down the hallway and slid onto a stool, dropping my head to the counter. “Since when do you cook?”
“I cook.”
“No, you do not. You live off Red Vines, Slim Jims, and leftover takeout.”
“Well, today I cooked. So eat your damn food.”
“Fine, mom,” I mocked, sitting up straight. I wasn’t at all surprised to find a turkey sandwich sitting in front of me. Ace didn’t subject himself to food norms. He ate whatever the hell he wanted when he wanted. If he wanted pesto chicken at eight in the morning, that’s what he’d eat.
“He made me a sandwich,” I joked, sinking my teeth into the bread.
“Fuck you,” he spat. “I was too lazy to make spaghetti.”
“Dude, we got any pickles?” Crumbs went flying from the small sliver of space between my lips.
He plopped down on the stool beside mine. “I’m not your pickle handler.”
“Bro,” I snorted. “You could not handle my pickle.”
But I definitely wanted him to try.

NY Times, USA Today, and #1 Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author Penelope Ward

RELEASE DATE: February 25, 2019

EXCERPT:

Noah stood up and walked off the porch to put his cigar out on the cement. When he returned, he remained standing across from me. I was reminded of just how tall he was as he towered over me. A breeze blew his scent—a mix of cigar and cologne—in my direction. The same smell saturated the shirt I was wearing. I could’ve breathed it in all night. His nearness was doing things to my body I hadn’t ever felt.

Noah looked around. “You mentioned some stuff around here needs to be repaired. What specifically?”

I blew out a breath. Even thinking about it was exhausting. “So much. I’d have to make a list.”

“Why don’t you do that? Make a list. I’m pretty good with my hands. I’ll see if there’s anything I can help with while I’m here.”

He’d lost me at pretty good with my hands. My imagination was running wild. Shit. I imagined those hands doing a lot of things—mostly to me.

“I can’t let you do that.”

“You’d be stupid not to take me up on it. I came for a change of pace, but the truth is, too much quiet isn’t good. I like to keep busy.”

Biting my bottom lip, I shook my head. “I don’t know…”

“Make the list,” he insisted.

Noah was right. It would be dumb not to take him up on his offer. It wasn’t like there was anyone else knocking down our door to help.

I tilted my head. “What would be in it for you?”

His expression turned dark. “People don’t always have to have ulterior motives.”

Suddenly feeling bold, I said, “I thought maybe you would want me to go out with you in exchange.”

Did you hear that? It was a record screeching.

I admit, that was ballsy, but being around him brought out my flirtatious side. Maybe his cologne and cigar smoke were going to my head.

“You’re joking, right?”

Okay. I shouldn’t have asked.

“Actually, I—”

“I’m practically old enough to be your father.”

Really? That’s how he saw me? I knew he was older than me…but he didn’t seem that old. No way. I’d pegged him as early thirties, though I truly had no idea how old he was.

I shook my head. “No, you’re not. That’s a lie. An older brother, maybe. How old are you?”

Instead of answering, he took two steps forward. “Let me make something clear.”

“Okay…”

“I was not insinuating anything by offering to help. And I will not be asking you out, propositioning you, or going anywhere near you, for that matter. We clear on that?”

Okay, then.

I swallowed. Disappointment washed over me as I cleared my throat. “Yes.”

“Good.” He made his way toward the door, turning around one last time. “You’d better go. It was nice chatting. Get me the list tomorrow.”

He disappeared into the house, leaving me on the porch to wallow in his lingering smell and feeling like a complete and utter idiot.

Synopsis:

What do you do when a sexy, older man moves into your family’s summer rental?

Well, apparently, you make a fool of yourself—over and over. Things didn’t exactly get off on the right foot with Noah Cavallari. Our first encounter was embarrassing, to say the least.

But despite that, I found myself waking up every day with a newfound energy. Nothing exciting ever happened on the lake—not until Noah moved into the small boathouse on our property. He’d booked it for the entire summer…and I was still trying to figure out why.

When my mother became ill, I inherited the responsibility of making sure our guests were well taken care of. I should have been in college. Instead, I was living my best life…as a maid.

Dark, handsome, and mysterious, everything about Noah screamed forbidden.

I knew he was just passing through town for the summer.

I knew he was probably too old for me.

Yet, I was drawn to him.

Not to mention, he tried to save my life when he mistakenly thought I was drowning.

I wanted him and made no secret of it.

His own attempts to warn me away soon gave way to late-night moonlight chats by the lake. We were slowly easing into a friendship that was gearing up to explode into something I might not recover from.

Because he’s leaving at the end of the summer.

And I have no idea what I’ll do when August ends.
