BLURB

I love my life. As owner and chef at one of the hottest restaurants, I know how to keep things sizzling in and out of the kitchen. What more could I ask for? But I’ll tell you what I didn’t ask for… a klutzy, curly-haired woman slamming into me with a unicorn cake. Yes, you read that right—a damn cake decorated to look like the mythical creature bathed in every color of the rainbow.

What could be worse, right? I’ll tell you. My brother hired her to be my pastry chef. You’d think that would be my biggest problem, but that was just the tip of the iceberg.

Aside from her being one of the clumsiest women I’ve ever met, she turns me on like no other woman has. She tastes sweeter than anything she creates, and we make a great team in and out of the bedroom… I mean kitchen.

When we first met, I worried my restaurant wouldn’t survive her. Now I worry that my heart won’t.

I never wanted to fall in love, but sometimes life isn’t all unicorns and rainbows.

EXCERPT

Springing to my feet, I square my shoulders, and meet his gaze head-on. Dark gray storm clouds swirl, uncontrollable. He bites down on the corner of his mouth, kicking one foot up behind him, the sole of his shoe banging against the door.
Standing my ground, I hold his tortured perusal, unwilling to blink first.
“Lila.” He rasps, his eyelids hooded.
“Cade.”
“Why’d you run?”
“I had to go to the bathroom.”
The left side of his mouth twitches and he pushes off the bathroom door, another step closer to me. “No, you didn’t. You couldn’t get out of the room fast enough.”
“You think?”
“It was shitty of me to put you on the spot like that in front of all those people.”
“I told you I don’t want a…thing.” I gesture between us.
“I know. But this thing,” he steps closer, crowding me, “it’s not going anywhere.”
I shuffle back until I’m pressed against the bathroom wall opposite the door. This damn bathroom is suffocating, overflowing with Cade’s presence. Cade’s forearm settles next to my head, boxing me in. His mouth is only inches from mine, his tongue darting out to swipe across his bottom lip.
I groan, my body involuntarily arching toward his. Jesus, what is wrong with me? And what is he thinking? Who could have a proper argument with all of these… distractions?
“I shouldn’t have done that, blown up your spot, tossed all that attention your way. But babe,” he drops his forehead to mine, his breath fluttering over my lips like an invitation I desperately want to RSVP yes to, “I hated that so many people threw shade your way. Every comment I heard pissed me off so much more because it was said about you, not me. And I won’t let any of these people talk shit about you.” He jabs a finger toward the party transpiring outside of the smallest bathroom that ever existed. “And I’m not going to apologize for looking out for you.”
“Cade,” I’m breathless, quivering for him to stop talking and start touching. But I need to be strong, resolute … honest. “I’m leaving in four months. I don’t do –”
“Serious, I know. Me either.” His nose brushes against mine and I shiver. Shiver! “But give me a shot, Lila. I’m not going to wifey you. Just let me take you out, kick it with me, come to my games and rock my number, give it a chance.”
“What if it’s too much?”
His fingers close around my hips, tugging until my belly button is flush against his jeans. Jesus. Need pools within me and as his fingertips grip harder, his body grinding against mine, I whimper, desperate for relief from the wildfire consuming me.
“What if it’s too damn good?” he angles his head lower, his bottom lip ghosting mine. “Let me light you up until we burn out. Babe, I’m not feeding you lines. I want you, Lovely.”

BLURB:

To Violet Foster, the past ten years have been a continual replay of an ill-fated night in high school. Without warning, she went from Downriver’s sweetheart to unintentional adult film star, her most intimate moments shared with the world in ten-second loops. She’s lost friends, been forced to change career plans, and had to stop dating because of that one indiscretion. The last thing she wants is to return to the scene of the crime, but with her grandma’s health failing, she doesn’t have a choice.

Easton Cole is a walking, talking bad-boy cliche in a blue mechanic coveralls. He’s always known his trailer-park-kid shadow would follow him into adulthood, but building his auto repair shop into a successful business means he has a chance to change that image. People in Downriver have long memories and getting them to forget his past is an uphill battle. The last thing he needs is the trouble Violet could bring. She’s a lightning rod for gossip, with a reputation that precedes her. So what if he’s been crushing on her practically since puberty?

Violet’s only planning on staying a month, even if the good memories of Downriver have started to overpower the bad, and Easton is dead set on making new ones…together. But the internet is forever, so there’s no chance of Violet having a future unblemished by her past. And when the stain of her damaged reputation resurfaces, Violet knows it could destroy everything around her…including Easton.

VIOLET

“What are you doing?” I asked, nearly breathless.

He smiled and held up the remote. “You mentioned zombies the other night at the grocery store. I looked it up, and there’re four movies streaming this month. Thought you might like to watch one.”

Zombies. He remembered me talking about zombies after I’d hit him with non-organic produce. The man was lethal to my control.

My lips were on his before I could think, before I could tell myself to hold back. This man—this ridiculously handsome and generous man—had just surprised me in the best way. It wasn’t often people remembered such inconsequential details, and even less likely that they’d take the time to make sure there were zombie movies available to watch before going on a date with me. We hadn’t made plans to come back to his place. It had been a spur-of-the-moment decision. Or maybe it hadn’t. Maybe Easton had hoped the night would end this way. Maybe he’d planned it.

Thank God he’d planned it.

Easton slid his hands right to my hips and pulled me close, manhandling me in a way that was both forceful and easy. A way that made my heart beat a little harder, a little faster. I moaned and deepened the kiss, needing more of him. Wanting so much. When the contact simply wasn’t enough, I threw caution to the wind and my leg over his lap. Straddling him. Pressing myself against where he was already hard. Shivering at how needy I felt already.

His kiss became rougher, more urgent, even as his hands skated along my sides and up to my breasts in the gentlest way. The juxtaposition, the sweetness under the desire, had me desperate for more. Every roll of my hips brought another sigh, every time he nipped my bottom lip or sucked it between his teeth another groan. Soaking wet and practically panting, I arched into his touch, wishing for more, hoping he’d take the hint and—

“Yes, more,” I said as he grabbed my breasts over my clothes. Heat and need exploded within me, my nipples tingling as he teased them with his thumb. I hadn’t had a dry-hump session in years, hadn’t remembered how good they could be. Easton hadn’t even gotten his hands in my pants, and I was already so close. So wet for him. So ready to let go and just come.

I dropped my head onto his shoulder and rocked my hips, craving so much more. Desperate to just give in and get what I needed. Ready to give him things I probably shouldn’t. Chasing that high I knew we both needed. Both craved.

With a sudden groan, Easton thrust up harder, lifting me with the strength behind the move. There was no denying how good that felt, how the move made goose bumps appear on my arms. Our bodies were completely connected, nothing but fabric in our way. He was hard and hot, pressing into where I was already so wet, so wanting. A shiver made its way up my spine as he rubbed against me in one long, slow press. So good, so much, so fucking wet. I dropped my head back and pressed my breasts into his hands, wanting more. Needing the feel of his hands on me, the sensation of his skin on mine, the pinch of his thumbs teasing my nipples again. He didn’t disappoint. Easton took my position as an invitation and nuzzled into my neck, biting softly, still rocking his hips and making me want to scream. Want to cry. Want to tell him not to stop.

But when Dolly brushed against my leg and let out a loud meow, my brain and my body stopped working in tandem.

“Shit,” Easton said, growling slightly, breaking his rhythm and looking over the edge of the couch toward the orange fluff ball. “Sorry—she can be a pest.”

That pest sauntered to the couch across from us and hopped up, making herself comfortable. Watching me. Bringing the reality of the moment back into crystal-clear focus.

“Easton.” I dropped my head to his shoulder, something dark and heavy forming in my gut. Something almost fear-like, but not quite. He didn’t push me, though, didn’t try to keep going. Instead, he edged back against the couch and slid his hands to my ribs.

“We can stop. I didn’t bring you here for this.”

EXCERPT

Pulling my two heavy textbooks for this class out of the stack too, I arrange everything nicely. Just as I am getting my brand new pencils ready, I am startled by a loud bang. My desk mate drops his books on the countertop and sits down, looking at me askance.
I startle to realize that it’s the blond Greek god I ran from only yesterday. Tall and broad-shouldered, he wears his black denim and dark blue tee shirt incredibly well. He knows it too, judging by his posture. He perches on his stool and crosses his arms, expectant. Perfectly unkempt sandy blond hair, dark brows spread wide over the darkest blue eyes I’ve ever seen, a patrician nose, two incredible cheekbones, and the most expressive lips…
This guy is fucking hot, excuse my French.
Which are currently smirking at me. I knew hot guys back home in Prineville. Mostly I avoided them, truth be told. But this guy is on another level. He is so dazzling that he could work in television… and bad tv just so happens to be my weakness.
Being around this guy is enough to make me rethink the bright yellow tee shirt dress I am wearing. I want more than anything to tug the hem down and smooth my hands over my black tights, but I don’t.
Instead I blush, fumbling to introduce myself. Sticking my hand straight out and tossing my messy blonde hair back, I try for an authoritative voice. “I’m Emily Danes.”
At the front of the classroom, the professor clears his throat, ready to start talking. My eyes dart to him, but then he reaches for his bunch of tissues again. Glancing back to my partner, I see him eye me up and down in a totally unsubtle way.
At last, he leans forward and shakes my hand. His skin against mine is hot. I bite my lip, refusing to let a little thing like instant animal attraction do me in.
“I’m Wolf,” he says, his voice low and gravelly. He looks me over once more. Then he arches a brow, his smirk deepening. “Did you find all of your panties last night?”
My cheeks instantly go the exact color of a ripe tomato. I lick my lips and frown. What am I supposed to say to that?

Read Kay’s Review: About Last Night

He lowered his eyes, suddenly aware he was half-drunk and mostly naked at ten thirty in the morning. “Maybe I could take you to dinner.”
She snorted. “Don’t do me any favors. Let’s just go back to the way things were and pretend we don’t know each other.”
He looked back up. Was she serious? Last night was the best sex he’d had in ages. She’d been all over him like an animal; he could barely keep up. Maybe he’d failed to impress her. She was a little older than him. Maybe she had higher expectations than the college girls he usual landed in bed with. Still, he wasn’t one to beg. Not much, anyway. “Come on, Tess, what did I do wrong?”
“Nothing. You did nothing wrong. I’m just…just embarrassed and ashamed, and I want you out of my sight so I can pretend like it didn’t happen.”
With a sigh, he stepped backward toward the door. “Tell you what. I’m gonna get sober, get dressed, and then ask you out proper-like, okay?”
“What is this?” she asked. “You feel sorry for me or something?”
“No, not at all. It’s just—”
“I don’t need you to fix this. Last night wasn’t your fault. You were just behaving according to your nature. I’m the one who did something stupid.”
His confusion suddenly took a back seat to anger. “You keep talking about me like I’m too dumb to understand what you’re saying. I got feelings, too, you know.”
She actually snorted before turning back to her coffee pot to fill the mug she’d been holding. “Sure you do, cowboy. You and your feelings need to get the hell out of my house.”
“You know, some women are actually happy after a night with me.”
“Well, then, maybe your time would be better spent finding one of them.”
Fine. What was the point arguing with her when she was so all-fired determined to dislike him? “Maybe I will. I’ve got plenty of options. Plenty.”
“I’m duly impressed,” she said blandly.
“You should be. I’m talking tall, stacked, gorgeous young women.”
She slammed her mug on the counter, coffee splashing out, and spun to face him, this time with tears welling in her eyes. “Then go! I cannot imagine why you’re standing here bothering me when you clearly have better things on the horizon. Just go!”
“Fine! I’m going. And hey, keep that damn dog of yours on your side of the yard.”
“Leave Clark out of it. He never did anything to you.”
Cooper slammed the door behind him. He’d been living in companionable silence next door to that woman for nine months, now. They didn’t speak much, but sometimes he’d mow her lawn for her, or she’d pick up his mail for him and set it inside his screen door. It had been nice. Polite. But now, well, she could mow her own lawn and see how she liked dodging the piles of crap Clark left all over.
He beelined for his fridge and grabbed another beer. So what if she thought he was a slob? So what if she thought he was the male version of a slut? So what if she was maybe a little bit right?
He took his beer to his room, and before he fully realized what he was doing, he started unstacking the boxes in the corner until he came to the one marked, keepsakes written in his mother-in-law’s handwriting. He ripped the tape off and opened the box. He set his beer on the floor and began digging through the contents, a mishmash of items from jewelry to letters to photos. And then he pulled out a framed photo. He collapsed against the wall and held it in one hand while he reclaimed his beer.
Kirsten had been his first everything. First kiss, first partner, first love. In the photo, she was smiling, several months pregnant. She was staring up at a handsome young man who had never slept with anyone but her, and who never got drunk to numb his feelings, and who couldn’t wait to take on the responsibilities of fatherhood—a young man who was gainfully employed and took pride in his work. A young man Cooper never saw anymore when he looked in the mirror. No, what he saw in the mirror was exactly what Tess saw…a bum. A young, irresponsible, drunken bum.
The photo was beginning to blur as Cooper’s eyes stung with unshed tears. “If I knew how to get back to that I would,” he murmured.
He kissed the photo, crawled into bed, and fell asleep with the empty bottle in one hand and the photo in the other.

Carter Ashby lives in Missouri with her three kids and two dogs. When she’s not working, or raising children, she enjoys writing real, romantic, and slightly naughty stories.
