BLURB

For years, infertility followed me like a cloud.

But finally, the sun has risen.

Finally, I am pregnant.

Except now a new storm rages in the distance—one I have no choice but to pass through.

I have no idea if the child I’m carrying belongs to my husband … or to the man I’ve betrayed him with—a man I’ve come to love but whose name I don’t know.

What I do know is that I’m a cheat. A liar. Undeserving of this baby inside me.

I don’t know how this will end. But I do know it won’t be without casualties, because this is a story in which a true happy ending cannot exist.

A story of how my love for one grew into three but must end with only two.

EXCERPT

Prologue

Pain relievers. You stare at the multitude of options at your fingertips, a whining toddler at your feet. Vitamins. I back away from them. Watch you ruffle the shock of blonde before taking the tiny hand that claws at your leg.

The commotion in the store falls silent. I’m paralyzed, my throat constricted, hands sweaty, eyes burning out of fear that I’ll blink and you’ll be gone.

You bite your lip, your eyes scanning the back of a box of Dimetapp before mumbling something to the girl. She is persistent. Throws a tantrum. You pick her up, my eyes trained on the strength of your arms — the muscular lines that cut across your skin.

You are beautiful.

“You ready?”

A small gasp leaves me as I force myself to look at my husband, all four chambers of my heart ripping as I wish for something else. “Yes,” I whisper, hand snatching up the nearest bottle of what I came here for, and allowing my hair to shield my face.

“Well, hurry up. I’m ready to go.”

Your head turns at the frost in his tone, the little girl now snug on your hip, snot glistening from her upturned nose. When our eyes connect, I surrender. A wave of longing erodes my veins, and I see the same in those tired eyes of yours. They widen at me, need and desire and understanding packaged beneath one bow.

I can smell a cheater from a mile away.

I know them because I am one. Once a cheater, always a cheater, right?

I want you.

And you … your scent is strong.

He was King of Arcadia Prep until she came for his throne…

ARIANNA
We moved around a lot, too much.
The shine of my highly respected and decorated military dad’s badge wore off after I became heavy baggage.
I was the new girl thirteen times in two years and every time I had to tape up another box I grew more resentful. Forced to forget everyone I fell in love with, laughed with and bonded with.
For a certain price you could unburden yourself from your hormonal teen at Arcadia Prep too.
I’m reckless.
I’m impatient.
Purple hair, a don’t care attitude and my Doc Martens all screamed leave me alone, fending off any new relationships.
I vowed to keep my heart safe this time, locking it away right under my anger but he knew exactly where I hid the spare key – in his mysterious eyes the minute ours locked.

BOLTON
I was stuck – the essence of a God in some kind of limbo of high school.
I was meant for more than this.
Being king here meant nothing.
Arcadia Prep wasn’t for the weak. The expectations, the pressure, the standards, the success and privilege smug on everyone’s face wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea.
I thrived in chaos.
I’m fearless.
I’m ruthless.
The new girl was not my cup of tea.
She stomped her Doc Martens all over my tradition, rules and my reign.
We all have secrets. Mine were paper weighted down by my heavy crown.
Her violet eyes and her abrupt attitude spewed sass all over my black on black. She didn’t faze me until I realized she was after my crown…

BOLTON

I heard footsteps long before I reached the door alerting me someone was trespassing. Quietly I stood in the doorway searching the room for culprit when I should have guessed.
Arianna. New girl.
Her fingers danced on the surfaces as her curiosity took it all in. There was no way to warn people that I was in a dangerously ruthless mood, to warn her.
“You’re gonna graduate from new girl to felon if you don’t start following the rules.”
She laughed and something about the casual attitude around the word felon made it seem like she knew trouble better than I did.
“Been there, done that, wasn’t worth the t-shirt or the keychain.”
I plopped down in the chair I put there years ago now, tired of getting drunk and doing the same shit. I rather do it alone then with people I hardly like. That’s why I come here to hide during parties.
She finally let eyes gloss over me and her face whines at the cut on my lip. I almost thought she physically got hurt, too bad suffering isn’t transferable.
“What the fuck happened to you?”
That sounded like a real concern, in all it’s displaced glory. Stern, demanding, even judgement – all here.
“Well, not that it’s your business, but I finally got what I deserved for my mouth.”
She fearlessly walked right over to me standing between my legs and leaned down to get a better look. Her deep blues rimmed with violet to match her hair, reminded me of the sky when it got tie-dyed  right before sundown, as she inspected my wound that stopped hurting the more I pushed the beer bottle to my lips over and over.
Better than the golden hour before the all the colors turned black and nothing was covered in the pretty filter. That summed up Arianna.
“Well deserved doesn’t make it hurt less.”
She was wrong. It actually did.
“Are you gonna kiss it better?”
She actually half scuffed, half snorted with laughter like I wasn’t being serious. I was in a despicable and semi-diabolical mood hellbent on the two B’s that teenagers values. Beers and Babes. The third B (bongs) was out since I couldn’t get caught with shit in my system during a pee test.
Arianna wasn’t half bad looking if I looked past her immature tantrum leading to her purple hair. Her skin shimmered like it was actually happy and her lips were almost always smiling. In this moment she was half goddess, but I couldn’t forget she was always half Hell.
My own personal hell.
I let my hand touch her thigh so she knew I was serious even though I was slumped down and perpetually board.
“What are you doing? We hate each other remember?”
“Hate me tomorrow.”

AUTHOR BIO

Elena Monroe grew up in Florida scribbling down stories from a very young age. These stories were really just wavy lines filling the paper, but she knew each word, each emotion, each character’s name, and there was no tricking her into forgetting what each line signified. Just like her unconventional way of writing as a toddler Elena is setting her own rules and just telling stories.

Much like her debut novel, The Best Years, life certainly imitated art. Transplanting from the South to the East Coast, Elena currently lives in Connecticut with husband, reformed bad boy.

Cover Reveal – Taming Hollywood’s Baddest Boy by Max Monroe

THBB - CR banner

Do people say they hate someone’s guts so that they can still fall stupidly, head-over-heels in love with the other parts?

Asking for a friend.

Taming Hollywood’s Baddest Boy, an all-new steamy laugh-out-loud romantic comedy standalone from New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe, is coming March 12th and we have the dreamy cover!

Taming Hollywood_s Baddest Boy(final cover)

Okay, fine. I’m not asking for a friend.

I’m asking for me—and I’m begging you to tell me that the practice of falling in love with your should-be-enemy is common.

Please tell me that I’m not the only person to track down a guy—who used to be Hollywood’s baddest bad boy before he left LA for good—at his off-the-grid cabin in Alaska, show up unannounced, and find him gloriously naked.

This probably happens all the time…right?

Tell me I’m not alone in my stupidity—that I’m not the only woman who would fall for gorgeous blue eyes and a sexy devilish smirk, even if they belong to a broody, mysterious jerk.

Please. Please. Please. Tell me I’m not alone in this.

For the love of everything, I need all the supportive girl power I can get if I’m going to convince Luca Weaver to come back to Hollywood—otherwise known as the place he hates so much that he ghosted Oscar-level success and escaped to no-man’s-land for the last eight years just to avoid it.

Yeah, don’t worry—that smoke you’re smelling isn’t your house catching fire as you read this…it’s just my career and what was previously known as my heart going up in flames.

Gah. Is it just me, or am I totally, completely, and utterly screwed?

EXCERPT

I reached for the hand laying lightly curled in her lap, and as though I had every right to, drew it into my other hand, laying it there, the palm facing upward. With the index finger of the first hand, I traced simple and repetitive patterns in her palm. Neither of us spoke, as though hypnotized by the motion, and the silence between us was leaden with more unspoken words than the Library of Congress.
I couldn’t tell if the shit between us, the extremely weighty baggage, was piling higher or dissolving, but either way, I felt a distinct shift take place in that moment. Looking into Melissa’s eyes I was sure she felt it too. Life is made up of moments. Some meaningful, some not. Some pivotal, some inconsequential. Some memorable, some forgettable. Some joyful, some regrettable. I took a facsimile of this one in my mind. I knew I’d be referring back to it often. It was meaningful, pivotal, memorable and joyful. It was a new beginning after an old end.
I was the first to break the spell, though not with words. With the hand that had been circling Mel’s palm, I gently raised her chin, still staring directly into her eyes, before looking down slightly at the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest as it became more erratic. Her gaze didn’t waver, and as I raised my eyes again to meet hers, they were there waiting for me. I wanted to smile, to do something to acknowledge the moment, but my features wouldn’t play ball. All I could do was stare, naked desire ablaze in my eyes.
I leaned forward, resting my forehead to hers, my breathing now mirroring hers in rapid stuttering jolts, each one tearing through my lungs like I’d run a marathon. I waited for her to say or do something. To encourage me or warn me off. She kept deadly still. Again the onus was on me, to make a move. I hesitated again, knowing we were headed for the point of no return, if we hadn’t already passed it. I knew that if we crossed this line, there was no going back. I waited a beat more, buying myself time to back out. To think reasonably and rationally about what I was doing, and act accordingly.
Screw that. The moment was there and then gone, and I knew that forward was the only direction we’d be moving, even if it felt far riskier than going backwards. I tilted my head slightly, angling my lips towards hers before lightly grazing hers with mine. Christ. I knew there and then that I should stop, that this wasn’t going to end well. I mean, who was I kidding, it had already ended badly for us in the past, why would this time be any different?

I stormed up the stairs and headed straight to my old room—his room. But when I got to the top of the stairwell, I swallowed the words I’d been prepared to unleash. The unexpected sight of Caleb doing pull-ups met my eyes. He used a bar affixed to the top of the door to lift himself up. He wore a T-shirt that rode up each me he rose. His hard abs were now staring me in the face, ripples of carved muscle. He had black wrist wraps on. He’d turned my old room into a home gym. He was a bastard—but there was no denying he was beautiful. I cleared my throat. “Did my father give you permission to put that thing in the doorway?”

The house shook as he landed on his feet. “Well, hello, Teagan. Amazing how easy it is to walk up the stairs, isn’t it? He grabbed a towel and wiped the sweat off his forehead. “And yes, in fact, your father did give me permission to put the bar up.”

I came out with it. “You think you know it all, don’t you? Who are you?”

He glared at me. “Who am I? Well, nice of you to ask, Teagan.” He threw his towel down on the desk. “You’ve had no interest in getting to know me from the moment I walked in the door. But since you finally did inquire… Hi, I’m Caleb Yates. Happy to be here. I have no clue what I’m doing with my life and have a some what crappy family situation back in England. So, I came to a strange country for the first time to get away for a bit. I miss my mum, but the good news is, I’ve just moved into

Wow.

“That’s a bit harsh, don’t you think?”

He came closer, and the smell of his cologne mixed with sweat was…interesting. Couldn’t say it was a bad thing, that’s for sure.“You didn’t have to write me a snooty email, Teagan. You can come talk to me if I do something to piss you off. If you write me emails like that when I’m right upstairs, that’s the kind of response you’re going to get, each and every time.”He had a point. The email was a bit cowardly of me. Yet I’d still managed to convince myself it was a good idea. He was right. Anything I needed to say to him, I should be able to say to his face. Quite honestly, the benefit of that was also his face—getting to look at it, I mean. It turned out, looking at him was a lot more fun than avoiding eye contact had been. Thank goodness he can’t read my mind right now.

Seeing that he actually seemed angry as opposed to amused caused me to change my tune—that and perhaps his scent going straight to my head as it followed my mind right into the gutter. He held out his hand.

“Give it to me.”I looked down at my empty hands.

“Give you what?”

“The stick in your arse. Take it out and give it to me.”

I crinkled my forehead. “What?”

He wiggled his fingers. “Come on. Hand it over.”

Genuinely curious as to where he was going with this, I motioned with my hand, pretending to remove the imaginary stick from my derriere and throwing it over to him.

He pretended to catch it, then let it weigh him down. “It’s bigger than I thought.” Looking around he said, “I’m gonna find a space for it. Hang on.”I laughed, against my better judgment. He shoved the imaginary stick under his bed and wiped fake dust off his hands.

“Now that that’s out of the way, why don’t we start fresh?”

SYNOPSIS

The beginning of my sophomore year in college was off to a rough start.

On the first day of orientation, I had an altercation with an infuriating British dude.

(In the men’s room. Don’t ask.)

I got home later that night and realized that the foreign student we were expecting

to rent a room in my parents’ house was allergic to our cat.

So, the spare room went to someone else: Caleb—the British guy from the men’s

room.

And so it began…my love-hate story with Caleb Yates. Or was it hate-love in that

order?

The guy knew how to push every one of my buttons.

Sometimes I’d email him to express my aggravation and disdain.

He’d actually rewrite my own words and send them back to me.

That was the type of infuriating person Caleb was.

So frustrating.

And…

Sometimes incredibly funny and endearingly sweet.

And hot.

He eventually grew on me, and Caleb soon became one of my best friends that year.

Too bad he was headed back to England soon, so nothing could happen between

us—for so many reasons.

I definitely couldn’t fall in love with him, especially since all we had was just one

year.

McKAY
I wasn’t the one who broke her but I played my part.
She came to us when she was ten. I raised her. I loved her.
I taught her how to survive in a world of evil men.
But it wasn’t enough.

ADAM
I wasn’t the one who saved her but I did my best.
She needed me as much as I needed her.
Bought and paid for on the auction block.
But not for the reasons you think.
She was my weapon.

DONOVAN
I wasn’t the one who lied to her but I hid her truth.
She was broken before I got there.
Wild and angry. Defiant and bratty.
But she trusted me most.
She loved me best.
So I set her free.

Indie Anna Accorsi is a woman lost in her past.
A pretty little nightmare.
A gorgeous piece of misery.
A mess of lovely darkness.
She is creeping beautiful.
And now we want her back.

EXCERPT

ADAM

By the time that job was over I realized something.
I loved her.
I guess that’s what happens when you get used to something and then someone tries to take it away from you.
Because our trip home from Pensacola was two days later than planned and Indie Anna didn’t smile a single second of that ride.
She didn’t cry, either. But I could tell she wanted to.
And I did exactly what McKay told me to do if things went sideways. I did not yell. Not once. I just said, “It’s fine, Indie. It’s gonna be fine,” in the most soothing voice I could manage as I watched the Company doctor restrain her to the bed and fix her up.
And the game we played on the drive home was a new one called Let’s Pretend That Didn’t Happen.
Knowing what I do now, I probably wouldn’t have played that game with her.
I probably would’ve done a lot of things differently if I had known how good she’d get at pretending shit didn’t happen.
But hindsight can kiss my ass. You can’t change the past.
Indie Anna Accorsi is a beautiful little mess. She is a lovely little bundle of blonde hair and blue-eyed darkness. And even though I should have all kinds of regrets about how she came to be mine and how we came to be hers, I would absolutely do it all again.
Knowing her now, I wouldn’t change a thing.
Because if all those terrible things hadn’t happened, she would belong to him right now. She would be living in that little brick house with Nathan St. James.
She would be whole, and normal, and maybe even happier.
And my heart would be shattered into tiny shards. Millions of bitty pieces.
So yeah.
I’m a selfish piece of shit.
But I want what I want.
That’s the only way I can explain it.
Maybe she didn’t become mine the day of the auction, but the day that asshole triggered her without my permission, she did.
She is.

MCKAY

I tried to track her that first year. I felt obligated. I mean, I did turn her into this… bloodthirsty sociopath, right? The least I could do was keep an eye on her and make sure she didn’t lose her mind and start offing people. But she literally disappeared. No trace. By this time Adam, Donovan, and I had been running ex-Company teams for several years. We had connections. Not anything as intricate as what we had before the Company fell, but it was enough to get intel and keep teams alive.
Even with all that, Indie was gone. I found some security cam footage of her truck right after she left. Had a decent, if spotty, track record of her as she made her way east towards Mobile. But after that… nothing. That was under two hours.
Two hours.
That’s all it took for her to wipe herself off the map.
It was a weird time for me. I was so fucking confused. I kept playing what happened back in my head over and over again. Donovan left right after Indie, claiming he couldn’t be a part of this. So it was just me that night.
Just me. All alone in this house.
I’ve been alone here before. Every time Adam and Indie went on a job I stayed behind.
But this wasn’t that kind of alone.
This was… loneliness.
Adam wasn’t picking up his phone. I called him constantly through that night, but he never picked up once. Finally, I had left so many messages his voicemail was full and I gave up. I went up to my bedroom and fell asleep, confident Adam would call me with some kind of update.
He sent a text.
A fuckin’ text that said, “It’s over.”
Just thinking about that fills me with hot anger right now.
How do you send a text like that?
I called him back that same day. He didn’t answer. I texted. He didn’t answer. So I busied myself tracking Indie on the various security cams.
I figured, OK. Everybody needs a moment. We just need to get our heads on straight and figure this out. And then they’d all be back.
No one came back.
Well, I guess that’s not true. Obviously, someone covered the furniture in white sheets and shut the house up.
But everyone moved on so I moved on too. Went to my machine shop. Turned the upstairs into a livable apartment. Started making some art pieces. Mostly outdoor sculptures. Opened up a fucking Etsy shop.
Which makes me chuckle a little, that’s how stupid it sounds. I was a thirty-two-year-old retired child-assassin trainer selling metal art on Etsy.
But I like my fucking Etsy shop. It calms me. Gives me purpose. And I sell a shit ton of art on there.
Once Indie left there was nothing. I had nothing. She was my everything. I probably could’ve been happy if Adam had come home. Probably could’ve stayed in the business if he was there.
But he disappeared too.
He’d moved on. The things that happened that day could not be fixed.
We were all… broken.

DONOVAN

I don’t think I can do this anymore. I know I’ve said it before, but this time I mean it. I can’t go through this again.
This is the eighth time.
Eight times Indie has gone off script.
Eight times we had to backtrack her every move and figure out what she did.
Eight times we told ourselves it was a one-off.
Eight motherfucking times we played her favorite game. The one called Let’s-Pretend-That-Didn’t-Happen.
Eight. Goddamned. Times. I’ve written a session note just like this.
And that, right there? That’s the definition of insanity.
I try and remember why I took this job. Why, exactly, I talked Adam into buying this girl. And I swear to God. I know I did this. I remember those words that came out of my mouth back on that island. I have the motherfucking session tapes, and notes, and private thoughts from Indie’s first year and I have read them so many times I could recite them from memory.
But for the life of me, I cannot come to terms with what the fuck I was thinking.
Carter is dead.
Dead. Dead. Dead. Like everyone else. He is dead.
He’s not out there running little girls like Indie.
He’s not out playing Company.
He’s gone.
That was my father’s final job before Adam and I helped Nick, and Sasha, and James kill two hundred people in Santa Barbara.
But I was young, I guess. So fuckin’ sure of myself. My brain, and my money, and my Untouchable status.
I can’t do this anymore.

INDIE

“Did you have a best friend when you were a kid, Adam?”
He didn’t look at me right away, just kept watching the football game. We had barbecued that afternoon. Hot dogs. I was still full from eating three.
But eventually his eyes found mine. “What do you mean? Like… McKay?”
“No. Did you have a girl like me when you were growing up here at Old Home? Or were you all alone?”
It came out sadder than I meant it to. Because I didn’t want to imagine Adam all alone. It made my heart hurt.
“I didn’t have a girl like you. Not until you came along. You’re one of a kind, Indie.”
I chuckled. Because I knew he was saying it to make me chuckle. But there was a stab of pain in my chest when he said that.
“I’m sorry, you know. For hitting you that day. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
His eyes went sad then. And I wanted to take it back. But I didn’t take it back. I couldn’t take it back. I had been wanting to tell him that since he woke up on Nate’s living room floor covered in blood.
Finally, he sighed. “It’s just who you are, Indie.”
His reply hurt me more than it soothed me. Because… was that girl who hit him in the head with a candlestick who I was?
I gave him a brain injury. He almost died. And sure, by this time I had killed my share of people on different jobs. I had hurt more than that too. But I never wanted to hurt Adam. If McKay had not insisted on taking him to the emergency room, he would’ve died, or at the very least gone unconscious and never woken up again. His brain was swelling up and cutting off his oxygen flow. And even though he recovered, and by this time he was mostly back to normal physically, he had to have therapy for months afterward. And learn to say a few words all over again because his mouth didn’t quite work right.
did that to him. And I was very, very sorry.
But the truth was… I didn’t actually remember doing it. I didn’t know how that candlestick got in my hand. I didn’t know how it struck Adam on the side of the head. I didn’t remember any of it. And that scared me. Really bad. And I wanted to tell this to Adam but I didn’t want him to worry about me or think I was losing it. Because I had heard Donovan talking to McKay and Adam over the years. He was always worried that one day I would ‘lose it’ and that’s why he’d been coming to talk to me since I was a little girl. So I didn’t lose it. So I could hold everything together in a tight, tight ball and never go insane.
But I didn’t know how to say that. I should’ve started with this train of thought instead of ‘I’m sorry’. Because now it felt like the conversation was over.
So I got up from my swing, walked over to Adam, and sat in his lap. And I hugged him. And then I was just… more sad than afraid. Because I had hugged McKay millions of times by this point in my life. And Donovan, a couple dozen, at least.
But I had never, ever, not once, hugged Adam. Or thanked him for saving me from that snake. Or giving me this home. Or making sure I was taken care of by McKay. For saving my life in the early days of those jobs. Or anything else that he’d done for me since I first became his more than seven years ago.
It took him almost a full minute to relax and put his arms around me, and hug me back. But when he did, something changed between us.
We both felt it.
And then his head turned and he kissed me on the cheek and pulled my face into his neck and whispered so softly, I could barely hear his words, “I love you, Indie. No matter what you do, I’m on your side, kid. Always and forever.”
I stayed in his lap. Enjoying this new closeness between us. But then he slapped my leg and said, “Get up. I gotta go inside. Got some work to do before I go to sleep.”
And I got up, and sat back down on my swing, and watched him walk away.

Excerpt

“How good are you at keeping secrets, Lenora Astalis?” His voice wrapped around my neck like a noose.

I wanted to cough. I needed to cough. He terrified me. I hated him with the heat and passion of a thousand blazing suns. He made me feel like a scaredy cat and a snitch.

“Oh, yes. If you’re coward enough to pretend you’re asleep, you’re good enough to keep a secret. That’s the thing about you, Astalis. I can smash you into dust and watch your grains dance at my feet. My little circus monkey.”

I might’ve hated Vaughn, but I hated myself more for not standing up to him. For not opening my eyes and spitting in his face. Clawing his unnaturally blue eyes out. Taunting him back for all the times he’d taunted all of us at Carlisle Prep.

“By the way, your eyelids are moving,” he said drily, chuckling.

He straightened up, his finger making a brief stop at the base of my spine. He snapped his fingers, making a breaking sound, and I nearly jumped out of my skin, letting out a gasp. I squeezed my eyes tighter, still pretending to sleep.

He laughed.

The bastard laughed.

Was he sparing me for the time being? Was he going to check in on me from now on? Retaliate if I opened my mouth? He was so unpredictable. I wasn’t sure what my life would look like in the morning.
