A new adult, college-sports romance that is full of great banter and just enough drama to keep you turning pages right up until the cliffhanger. GAH!!

Both Mason “Casanova” Nova and Kay “PF” Dennings bring previous heartache to this relationship, but Kay brings a shroud of mystery along with hers on top of it.  Be warned this entire story will be told over three books, so if you detest cliffhangers and want to wait for the entire series to be released, Alley isn’t waiting long in between each one.

Alley Ciz is a new author for me and while I absolutely loved the inner monologues and thoughts of each character (seriously the best and they always cracked me up) and I loved the camaraderie between Mason’s teammates and Kay’s family and friends. I did struggle with the nicknames that Kay gave everyone close to her. This is really my own personal issue, but when her friends names were shortened to just letters I lost the personal connection (E, G, T, Q…and so on) my brain just seemed to stumble and short circuit every time and I tried so hard to remember who she was talking to or about.

Anyway, I did find refreshing, that the man nicked named “Casanova” wasn’t quite the douche that his moniker made him out to be. Mason is actually kind of sweet, yes, he has caveman tendencies, but he is also nice. Their romance developed slower than you would have expected for a football player and cheerleader story (although, once again I love breaking stereotypes). Mason and Kay both have high walls that neither are willing to break, but as they begin to crumble the story really does take off.

They both have trust issues that they need to work on to really make a relationship last, but it could work if they both face their past and just let the other one in.

Both Mason and Kay have great friends that will make excellent additions to this series and anyone who is already familiar with Alley’s books will be excited with characters popping in and making appearances.

Semi-Sweet On You was completely unexpected and hit me with all the feels. Cam and Whitney prove that second chances are well worth it and work better when the relationship bakes for the proper amount of time.

In this second chance romance where both characters have not only had ten years apart, but had occasion to run into one another in the small town where they both grew up and then recently end up working together you would think there would be fireworks or at least a small bomb exploding when they finally decide to make a go of a relationship, but instead this beautiful slow-burn story is nothing what I expected and everything I love about returning to Appleby, IA.

Erin Nicholas returns us to the small town of Appleby, IA with the loveable guys who bought Hot Cakes; Grant, Dax, Aiden, Oliver, and Cam.  We jump into a second chance love story between Cam and Whitney, who secretly dated in high school, but broke up ten years ago for multiple reasons, one of the main ones being that their families have been rivals for three generations.

While Cam wants to jump back into a relationship with Whitney (admitting he’s never really stopped caring about her) Whitney isn’t quite as eager to make that plunge. She has a lot to prove and dating Cam, as nice as it may sound, doesn’t land on her list of accomplishments. While Cam left Appleby, attended college, became a lawyer, and a millionaire with his friends, Whitney has only ever lived in Appleby and worked at Hot Cakes. Period. The end. Now that it’s under new ownership she has a lot of time and ideas to make up for. She wants to prove herself and dating Cam doesn’t seem like the best move to do that. That’s more like a lateral move if she just allowed Cam to solve all of her problems and she’s already allowed her family to keep her hidden long enough.

Cam wants to help Whitney, but he’s at a loss of how to do that. Whitney is clearly not the same girl he left when he went to college ten years ago. Gone is the confident girl and standing in her place is someone who doubts herself, which doesn’t help him when all he wants to do is swoop in and take care of her. When Whitney’s grandmother steps in and gives him a great idea, one that she really can’t say no to, he is able to help Whitney and Hot Cakes, along with reconnecting with pieces of his family’s past which in turn mends the town more than anyone could have anticipated.

There are lots of spectacular moments in Semi-Sweet; but some of my favorite were during the bake off, then pretty much any moment with Didi (Whitney’s grandmother), and lastly add in Henry (Cam’s younger brother) and I was a goner. I’m a total sucker for old and young people each and every time. Add them together and I’m in love. Didi and Henry spending time together is going to melt your heart and it will leak out of your eyeballs, so have a few tissues handy (FYI).

Overall, this book was completely unexpected and I loved every moment of it.

“Please, Bren,” Jordan whispered.

I sagged, hearing his plea.

If I didn’t stop, he’d start. I had to stop. I had to stop for him.

“We have to go. It’s done.” That was Cross, but he was the leader speaking now. “Get her in the truck.”

Harry found himself standing in the doorway of the church reception hall. There were a bunch of people milling about, most with red cups in their hands. “For a crazy old lady she drew quite a crowd.”

“Oh, everyone comes out for funerals in these parts,” Cal admitted as he made his way to the big crystal punch bowl and got himself a cup. “There’s not a lot else to do so weddings and funerals are big social events.” He took a long drink. “And, damn, but Zep’s got a heavy hand with the rum. There’s way more rum than punch. The Guidrys might be trash, but trash around here usually knows how to party.”

He wasn’t sure he liked his cousin referring to anyone as trash, but he didn’t know the family well. He did know he’d heard the name Guidry from his aunt’s mouth and it was obvious she didn’t think much of them. “I think I’ll try the lemonade.”

“Suit yourself.” Cal refilled and looked around the crowd. “Introduce yourself around. I’m going to see what Josette has going on. Now there’s a woman I could spend some time with. Some fun time.”

His cousin winked and walked off toward a slender blonde.

He was rapidly discovering his cousin was a bit of a douchebag.

“You’re the new guy.”

He turned to find his own pretty blonde staring up at him. She was petite, barely coming up to his shoulders, and he would bet half her weight was in that hair. It flowed past her shoulders almost to her waist, and there was so much of it. Thick, honey-colored silk. Sky blue eyes found his own and held him there. Her arms were crossed over her chest and he noted that she was drinking the lemonade.

“How do you know that? Maybe I’ve been here all along and no one’s noticed me.”

Her nose wrinkled sweetly. “Oh, they all notice you. That’s how I know you’re the new guy. Welcome to Papillon. I came over to give you fair warning. I think single people need to stick together in an effort to stay single despite the societal pressure to give in to the patriarchy. If my mother tries to convince you to let me show you around, she’s really trying to find me a husband.”

Oh, but he might not mind her showing him the town. Beyond being gorgeous, he liked the sass she was throwing his way. He was self-aware enough to admit that women had come easy to him. He wasn’t hard on the eyes, but finding one who got him was a different story. “That seems to be a theme. The church secretary already tried to have her granddaughter show me around.”

A single brow rose over those heavenly eyes of hers. “Debra? Yeah, you have to be careful with her.”

“I’ve heard she’s handsy.” He nodded. “And she talks a lot.”

“Yeah, she also drinks a lot more than Helena will admit, and she’s started a couple of spectacular bar fights. She likes to pit her suitors against each other and make them fight for her.”

“Good to know.” He glanced around and sure enough, every eye was on him. “Well, I don’t suppose you would show me around. Maybe if you showed me around, people would stop offering up their daughters. Camryn waits for me to shed my pants. I almost trip over them, anxious and unsure. She’s getting to me. I toss them on the floor with my bag and hold out my arms.

I have always loved to read. In kindergarten, I was the weird kid sitting in the reading nook by myself instead of trying to get more snacks. I’m excited to be putting my own voice on the page and watching a story I helped create come to life. I still love to read, but I also really like snacks.

I grew up in Chicago but recently moved back to the Dallas area where I live with my husband and son.

I have my Bachelor of Science in Biology. I spent a year researching chimpanzees and gorillas while I was in Chicago and then I spent another two months on a chimpanzee sanctuary trying to convince headstrong chimps to cooperate. I was completely enraptured by this story. Torn in two by the two men in Harper’s life. I found myself continually going back and forth between the two, which made for page turning reading late into the night.

The old saying of “the heart wants what the heart wants” played over and over in my mind as Harper was drawn over and over again to a man who seemed to throw her love away, but the more Harper dug into the actions surrounding her life, the small things, Christopher had loved her for a long time, he just never said it. Christopher is a definite dark horse throughout the entire journey. Just when you begin to like him he does something that turns your like into dislike instantly. I kept wondering why Harper kept going back for more of his cool personality, aside from the fact that she grew up with men just like him and she was accustomed to that very thing, but perhaps that is why she was also drawn to his business partner, Sutton Mayfair.

Sutton is a man who is upfront and in your face with his feelings and wants. You knew exactly where he was coming from especially when it came to Harper. He may have held other secrets, but I think when it came to Harper he is forthcoming, honest and that is why we are so drawn to him. He tells her exactly what he wants from her emotionally and physically which is something she isn’t exactly used to, but she finds refreshing. Not only from his sunshine good looks that scream warmth, but to his welcoming personality. Harper has never really had a man in her life that has welcomed her with open arms and wanted to keep her by his side.

This is why is torn between them.  How do you break your hearts poisonous cycle of loving a man who doesn’t want to love you back and begin loving a man who only wants to openly love you? Shantel Tessier wrote an addictive story that is gripping and so full of artistic expression. Grave is beautifully heartbreaking.

Having recently lost a family member who struggled his entire life with addiction, I know first hand how hard it is to break free from those demons. Shantel captured Grave’s personality and inner thoughts perfectly of a man who has struggled with addiction. Grave, at his core, is a deeply sensitive man. He feels things deeply, which given the family he was born into means he is supposed to suppress those feelings. That can be hard to do without the aid of drugs, booze, or chasing a high in women, fast cars, fighting, or so on and so forth.

Grave does anything to bury meaningful thoughts, and of the four Kings, he is the one who actually feels the most. His story will break your heart over and over again. Like each King, it is not for the faint of heart, but it is also one that was extremely hard to put down.

When Grave meets April, it triggers something in him, something that he hasn’t felt since the passing of his mother, but he’s drawn to her. I loved Grave’s story, along with the evolving storylines of the other Kings. This series just gets better and better.

This was my opportunity to bring up last night. But now that he was right here, towering over me, his musky smell saturating the air, I seemed to have lost the words. Still, I was determined to speak up now or never.
My heartbeat accelerated. Here goes. Still out of breath from my sprint up the stairs, I said, “Well, honestly, in answer to your question… I’d love to say I’m doing great, but I had a hard time getting to sleep last night. So, I’ve been better.”
He frowned. “I’m sorry to hear that.”
“Actually, it’s sort of your fault.”
Deacon’s forehead crinkled. “My fault?”
“Yeah. I don’t know if you realize this, but your bed is right up against mine, on the opposite side of the wall. Your…interactions…last night woke me up, and I had a hard time getting back to sleep.”
Boom.
There.
Said it.
Deacon closed his eyes momentarily. “Shit. I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were right behind me.”
“Yeah. It’s basically like I’m…right there.”
“Well, that was rude of me. I should’ve invited you to join.”
What? It felt like all my blood rushed to my head.
He held out his palms. “I’m kidding. Bad sense of humor comes out when I feel awkward, I guess.”
Slipping a piece of my hair behind my ear, I brushed off his comment. “I know you’re kidding.”
“Totally kidding.” He smiled. “But I’ll try to be more considerate now that I know you can hear everything. You should’ve said something.”
I tilted my head. “How exactly would that have worked? Barging in on two naked people? That’s why I’m saying something now.”
“Solid point. But I take it last night wasn’t the first time you overheard things?”
I looked down at my feet. “No, it wasn’t.”
“You could’ve banged on the wall or something.”
“I’m not one to rudely interrupt someone’s…personal happenings. I just wanted you to be aware of the situation. We don’t need to discuss it further.”
“Maybe we should come up with a code.”
“What do you mean?”
“Like, If I’m disturbing your peace, you play a song and crank it up to send me a message.” He snapped his fingers. “Something ironic like ‘The Sounds of Silence’ by Simon and Garfunkel.”
“Can’t exactly crank up a song when a baby is sleeping.”
His smile faded. “See? That goes to show you how clueless I am. Clueless and so sorry, Carys. Truly. I’ll try not to let it happen again.”
“It better not, fuckboy!” a voice shouted from behind one of the apartment doors.
Deacon and I turned around in unison. I noticed Mrs. Winsbanger’s door move across the hall. The old lady must have been listening in. She lived alone, and I often spotted her peeking out her door, spying on people.
Deacon grimaced. “Mrs. Winsbanger loves me.”
“Apparently I’m not the only one who overheard things last night,” I said.
His face turned red. His embarrassment was a bit surprising. I’d expected him to be more cocky.
“I’ll move my bed to the other side of the room. That should help.”
“Well, that would be nice, if it’s not too much trouble.”
“It’s not.”
Happy to have the conversation over with, I let out a long breath. “Okay, well, I’ll let you get going.”
He didn’t budge and seemed to be examining my face. “You okay?”
“Yeah. Why?”
“You seem frazzled.”
Well, yeah. I didn’t get good sleep, I’m trying to get things done in possibly the only hour of the day I have free, and we just had the most awkward conversation EVER.
“This is just me—my life. I have what could be barely more than an hour to eat my lunch and have some quiet time before my daughter wakes up from her nap.”
“Ah.” He scratched his chin. “How old is she now?”
“Six months.”
Deacon knew I was a single mom. He’d run into me one day and helped me bring groceries in while I tried to juggle Sunny and her stroller.
I was just about to head back inside my apartment when his voice stopped me.
“Do you need anything?”
I wasn’t entirely sure what he meant. “Like what?”
“Something from the store? A…coffee, maybe? I’m just headed out to run a quick errand, but I can stop somewhere on the way back.”
“It’s the least you can do, monkey balls!” Mrs. Winsbanger chimed in from across the hall.
She was apparently still listening.
“Did she just fucking call me monkey balls?” he whispered.
At that moment, I lost it. Laughter got a hold of me, and it took almost a minute before I could even speak. Deacon laughed, too, but I think he was more cracking up at my reaction.
“No idea why she just called you monkey balls. But I haven’t laughed this hard in weeks.”
After I finally calmed down, Deacon repeated his earlier question.
“Anyway, as I was saying, can I get you a coffee or something?”
His offer gave me pause. It was rare that anyone asked if I needed anything. I had a couple of good friends in the city, but they worked and had busy social lives. It wasn’t like they were around in the middle of the day to run to the store for me. And given that it was fall in New York, it was getting chilly out. I had to have a damn good reason to take Sunny out in the cold.
Honestly, I was dying for a latte from Starbucks. Running to the coffee shop was definitely something people without babies took for granted. It wasn’t worth having to bundle Sunny up.
“I would love a vanilla latte from Starbucks, if you pass one on your way back,” I finally said.
“Done.” He smiled. “That’s it?”
“Just one pump of vanilla would be great.”
“One pump. Got it. Anything else?”
“Isn’t that enough? It’s hardly a necessity. I shouldn’t be taking advantage.”
“Take advantage of me. What else do you need? Seriously. It’s the least I can do after disturbing your peace last night.”
Take advantage of me. Yup. Mind straight in the gutter. “You’re not my gopher.”
“Carys….” His baritone voice turned serious, and he repeated in a slow and exaggerated manner, “What. Do. You. Need? I could run to the store.”
There was something else I desperately needed.
“Diapers?” I said hesitantly.
“Okay.” He laughed. “You’re gonna have to help me out with those. I’ve never purchased them in my life.”
Before I could tell him what size, he handed me his phone. I was all too aware of the brief touch of his hand.
“Enter your digits. I’ll text you from the store to make sure I get the right kind.”
I did as he said before handing him back the phone, once again enjoying the contact from that brief exchange. Cheap thrills were as good as it got these days.
He put it in his pocket. “Anything else?”
“Not that I can think of.”
“Alright. Well, if you change your mind, you can let me know when I text.”
“Thank you. I really appreciate it.”
“Talk to ya in a bit,” he said before heading down the hall.
I stood by my door and watched him walk away. The view from the back was just as good as the front. And moreover, it seemed Deacon was just as lovely on the inside as he was on the outside.
“One pump my ass,” I heard Mrs. Winsbanger say before she slammed her door.

While this is book twelve in the Trinity Masters series, this was my first time visiting this particular world. While I’ve read both authors separately, I’ve had this writing duo on my TBR for awhile and now that I’ve finally had a chance to dive into their suspenseful menage series I’m kicking myself for waiting so long. Necessary Pursuit is full of smexy, steamy times, but it is also an international pursuit of catching and taking down all the bad guys.

It is almost scary how the authors whip up all of the intellectual knowledge to add into this book. Their search history must throw up all the red flags…but seriously… We have a physicist, a bomb engineer, and a computer hacker in this romance trinity. These three do joke throughout the story that they sound like a comic book evil group, or what they know would make them perfect super villains. The intelligence between them is so high, that it is funny and I’m glad that the authors use humor throughout the book to showcase it.

They also are very aware of the danger that surrounds them, but stop to appreciate the quiet moments and use that time to appreciate each other. I think because of their jobs, and also because they are on the run, they are very aware that life is short so they use their time to their advantage.

Mari and Lila do a wonderful job piecing together the three characters and showcasing their strengths. How they lean on one another and draw strength off each other when they each need it. That is so important in any multiple partner relationship so no one person is left out.

Overall, this was a great book, especially considering this was my first adventure into this Trinity world. I already have more on my TBR list to go back and catch up and I’m looking forward to it.

Very emotional, I was sobbing by the end. I loved this new addition to the Bayou series!

While this is a love story between Sera and Harry, this is also a story between the women in the family of Guidry and Beaumont. Celeste Beaumont is the matriarch of the Beaumont family and is a southern lady who lets her name, money, and status guide her morales, just as it has the family name for generations. Why am I mentioning Celeste when this is a love story about Sera and Harry? Celeste is the aunt of Harry and was also the mother of Wes the boy who was best friends of Sera before he passed away. This is something that Celeste blames Sera for even though she had nothing to do with his actual death, but the animosity of her lifelong friendship are just deeply harbored and her grief lashes out to anyone close.

But…once again…back to the story of Sera and Harry. Harry is in town for his cousin’s wedding (Wes’ sister, Angie). He didn’t grow up in Louisiana and has rarely seen his cousins, so he doesn’t exactly understand the dynamic of the small town or why anyone wouldn’t like Sera Guidry. Anytime he’s been around her, she is sweet, a hard worker, and a wonderful single mother. That last fact alone won’t keep him away, no matter what the rumors are or what his family says.  He won’t let his Aunt stand in his way of getting to know Sera better because something tells him she could be more and perhaps this small town could finally be home.

Sera struggles with letting Harry get close. She knows exactly how Celeste will react when she learns about Harry’s feelings for her and she also knows how important family is. Sera doesn’t want Harry choosing a life between her and his family. As much as Sera keeps trying to push him away, it’s also difficult because Harry is amazing and pushing him away becomes basically impossible.

I love how this story isn’t just about Harry and Seraphina, but also about Celeste and how she has had to overcome a lot of obstacles in her life.  I found myself going back and forth with Celeste where I didn’t like her and then where I was sobbing for her. Her story is so powerful it really hit home with how women have had “deal” with social norms throughout time and I connected with her struggles so many times throughout the story. I appreciated how Lexi wove it in and how it made the overall story even more emotional and an intrical part of Seraphina’s story.

Bayou Baby was so emotional, but such a great addition to Lexi’s books I absolutely loved it.
