Delia’s world revolves around numbers and when she finds a discrepancy at work and then gets assaulted the very next day after pointing them out, the coincidences could seem to unlikely, but it’s no longer just an unlikely coincidence when Delia sees a photo that may link a cold case that Detective Matteo is working on to her open case and this is when things get a whole lot more interesting.

Delia has had a crush on Matteo for years, but Matteo has been oblivious to it for just as long. For a great detective, for matters of the heart he’s a tad slow. It’s only when Delia’s case pushes them together that his blinders come off and his feelings are pushed to the forefront that he realizes how important Delia has become. Willing to put someone first, before his job for the first time in his life, he’s unwilling to lose Delia, even if it means losing the most important case of his life.

The Guardian is full of plot with high stakes where these two normally unlikely romance characters are thrown into high suspense and find out they have even more in common than they every thought.

The Art of Falling For You is a beautiful, angsty story about falling in love for the very first time. This has to be one of the BEST books Maya Hughes has ever written!

I was transported back to my budding youth where new love is an emotion you’ve never experienced, much less understand how every touch, every look, every moment is a rush because it’s new. You yearn to learn everything possible about the person you can’t stop thinking about and you ache for their presence when you are apart. Maya Hughes wraps us in every single emotion that buds from this experience.

Both Bay and Dare have never known romantic love and they are both cautious about jumping into something that neither of them could, in a sense, come back from. They both sense whatever the draw is to each other, it’s more than just attraction, it’s something deeper.

Bay doesn’t trust Dare from the very beginning. He is a football god and she is basically invisible. When he starts talking to her Bay is continually waiting for him to reveal she’s being punked in some sort of horrible end of year school prank. Why would he suddenly, after 3 1/2 years notice her, it just doesn’t make sense.

Dare, on the flipside, is leery to bring anyone into his messed up world. He honestly has no idea if he has a future beyond high school and his abusive father haunts his waking thoughts. The thought of sharing any of the bad stuff with the one good thing he’s recently discovered in his life weighs so heavy upon him that sometimes he can hardly breathe.

The vulnerability between these two is so shattering while I felt emphatic for both. My heart continually ached, while I also sighed multiply over their young love. The ups and downs were beautiful and Bay and Dare enraptured me with their story. I had goosebumps so many times, and that was when my heart wasn’t racing.

“Bay had ruined me for anyone who came after her, and I didn’t want there to be anyone else. It was like she’d been sent as a gift to me after so many years in the dark.”- Dare

Also, the title of this book couldn’t have been any better as I felt like I was falling into a  piece of artwork. A love story like they shared was similar to brush strokes on a canvas. Each color combining to make a beautiful picture, but one wrong stoke could change the entire composition.

While this is just the first leg of this overall journey, and my heart is aching for it to continue, I’m torn up for both characters. Their journey and their life is so touching, it is a must read for 2021!
