Unbreak my heart…anyone else hear this soulful Toni Braxton song in their head? No…just me? Okay…I’m so ready to have my broken heart fixed by this soulful story.

Maya Hughes has written the best trilogy of her career. I’m throwing that out there first. This couple has thrown me over the literary edge, stabbed me full of angsty feelings, and left me a blubbering mess over and over and yet I couldn’t wait to find out what happened to these two people who desperately needed their happily ever after! P.S. The Hate of Loving You is full of the aforementioned, but so darn worth reading every moment of it.

At the beginning of this book, Keyton and Bay are like two rusty cogs who are stuck in their pain and hurt, unmoving from where their past has left them. It’s soul crushing, truly soul crushing to watch them struggle. However, as the rust begins to drop off their cogs and their relationship moves forward, they discover that with the success of their careers spending time a relationship is nearly impossible. Is it really too late for them?

Finding any spare moment they can, between Keyton’s games and traveling, Bay’s studio time, promotions and tour schedule they relearn one another. It’s been a decade since Dare first heard Bay singing in her backyard and they’ve come a long way from those two teenagers, but are they really ready for anything more?

There are so many moments that highlight how perfect these two are together, showing growth for both Bay and Dare/Keyton. While I wanted to weep at the six years they had lost, it was also a time where they gained experiences as a young adult in their careers and who they spent time with, travelled with, etc… which really shapes them into who they have now become.

Some of the best moments in this story, aside from steamy times, were Fulton U pop up moments. All the interconnections were fantastic and I couldn’t have been happier with how the entire book wrapped up. Don’t wait, if you haven’t read the first past of this trilogy yet, start it now so when The Hate of Loving You comes out you will be ready.

So amazingly good, I was smiling through the entire book. I read it from cover to cover and didn’t put it down until I was finished.

Gabe is confident, charming, snarky with just a hint of sassy that made him so darn likeable I couldn’t imagine anyone in his life not liking him or even saying no to whatever he asked for. What makes him even more likeable is that he’s not arrogant or bossy, he’s energetic and carefree while also being pulled together and organized. I want him on my side and totally as my friend any day of the week because Gabe’s energy is completely infectious and I’m totally in love with him.

Marcus is almost the complete opposite of Gabe in that he’s controlling, a complete workaholic, wears a perpetual scowl and knows that his only long term relationship has ever been with his work. While he’s drawn to Gabe and his confident, charming attitude, deep down Marcus knows in the long term, it would never work between them. The age gap alone would worry him, but it extends further than that as he actually gets to know the vibrant man. The closer he gets, the more he wants, and Marcus knows he has to cut ties before he gets too deep.

I was not prepared for how thoroughly I enjoyed this book on a different level than Ella’s other books. Yes, it’s interconnected to Ella’s other books, with some of the same characters popping in, but the last book I read had a whole suspenseful edge to it. While I should really know better than to judge a new book and hold it to those same guidelines, Bad Intentions is just amazingly different in a totally awesome way. It’s witty, and steamy, and full of such charm and passion, I loved reading every page of this book and I’m going to be really sad when the duet comes to an end.

Everytime Marcus was grumpy or grouchy, Gabe basically turned that frown upside down (not literally since I’m not sure Marcus knew how to smile, but in the sense that Gabe was charmed by Marcus’ personality). These two were each others’ yin and yang. I was charmed by Marcus’ grouchy because Gabe was…well, he just made everything delightful. I desperately need a Gabe in my life. ❤ Basically, everyone could use a Gabe in their life and the world would be a better place.

She worked in a shithole diner and probably lived in a shithole place when she was the daughter of a state judge, probably grew up in private schools with a Mercedes gifted to her on her sixteenth birthday and more money than my own parents had. This shouldn’t be her life.
She’s better than this. Better than her circumstance and I believe her. She just needs someone to help.
The memory of Melissa’s pleading eyes made me squeeze my own eyes shut. “Fucking bleeding heart.”
Since she could walk, she had a calling to save everything from kittens and frogs and turtles in the road to classmates and children where she worked.
One last request. Promise me.
I’d wanted to throttle her slim, pale throat.
I gripped the door handle and scowled at the silver-plated handle, before I threw it open.
“Happy now?” I asked, and somehow, I knew she was.
Lilly was still in the back when I entered. Where Dad said she always stood, there was an old laptop with notebooks spread open. I took the seat at the far end and waited, snagging a menu from the counter on my way.
The food was cheap, basic diner food, perfect for the clientele a place like this brought in. Greasy, thick burgers, patty melts, and Reubens. Sandwiches and burgers and two salad options.
It was late enough none of it appealed to me. Probably why my dad came for the pies.
Fortunately for me, he’d said they were the best he’d ever tasted, and I’d inherited his sweet tooth.
The creak of old, squeaky door hinges rang out and I lifted my head.
Lilly came out carrying a tray stacked with food, focused on the four-top. I didn’t move for fear of distracting her. Not a great first impression to make if she ended up covered in grease and condiments.
The guys at the table did more shoulder-slapping, whooping and hollering like they were watching the Super Bowl and not their food being delivered. I kept my eyes on them, waiting for one to give me a reason to put an end to all of them. The dark-haired guy would be first. He sat at the outer edge of the booth and as Lilly leaned forward to deliver a tray to the guy next to him, his hand hovered inches from her backside.
The blond across the table egged him on with a nod but she stood back, put space between them, and barked, “Even think of touching me and none of you are leaving with your dicks still attached to your body.”
“Oohh. I’ll show you mine happily,” one said, hands dropping to his lap.
She glared at him, resting bitch face I was certain she learned in prison firmly in place. It didn’t look right on her. Too hard. Too forced.
What would she have been like as a smiling, happy teenager before life was stolen from her?
Damn it. I felt it then. That pull my dad had when he first saw her.
She’d lost too much.

He lifted a brow. “Are you going to actually be helpful now or not?”

She loved every single thing about this petting zoo.

“Oh, I’m not going anywhere,” she told him. “I’m definitely going to help.”

He sighed.

Feeling suddenly lighter and happier than she had in a long time—and that was saying something as she was generally light and happy, not to mention on her way to Paris soon—Charlie turned back to the animals.

“Okay, now that we know each other better, how about you all be sweet and head back to the barn?”

Not one animal even looked at her.

“Hey, Stan?” she called to the big goat. “You’re clearly a leader. How about you show me that you can do some good with all that staunch determination and lead everyone back to the barn?”

“You can’t be serious,” the guy said. “Talking to them isn’t going to work.”

“Talking is what I do.”

“No kidding.”

She just lifted a brow. “So what should I do instead?”

Maybe he could give her an opening for charming him into putting that very nice, smirky, sarcastic mouth against hers and…

“Nudge ’em,” he said simply.

Now she blinked at him. “What?”

“Nudge them,” he said again.

“Just… nudge them? As in, push them?” She narrowed her eyes. Were they talking about goats? Or were they maybe talking about grumpy farmers who needed more than a subtle flirtation to make a move?

“Sometimes that’s all they need.”

Okay then. She was going to keep that in mind.

“So…” He nodded toward the goats.

She blew out a breath. Okay, so for right now, they were talking about goats.

Charlie approached the smallest of the animals. He—or she—looked up at her. “Hello, I’m Charlotte. Would you please accompany me across the street back to your barn?” She heard the man’s snort even from a distance. That made her smile even though she was still stuck with the problem of herding goats.

The goat, of course, didn’t move a step.

“I would very much enjoy it if you would grant me the pleasure of your company across the street at your barn,” she told the goat.

This time the goat didn’t even lift his head.

Charlie propped a hand on her hip. “I don’t feel that we know each other well enough for me to actually put my hands on your body, so it really would be easier if you would just head in the general direction of your barn.”

“For fuck’s sake.” Suddenly the man was back beside her.

He bent and lifted the goat, and Charlie couldn’t help but think this had worked out very well.
She hadn’t had to touch the goats, but she hadn’t been entirely unhelpful to him.

Okay, that wasn’t true. She had been completely unhelpful to him. But she hadn’t left him out
here with the goats alone.

The man pivoted and pressed the goat to her chest. Instinctively her arms went up and around it. He let go.

And just like that, she had her arms full of goat.

Charlie gasped, partially in surprise and partially because it only took her a millisecond to think about the fact that she now had a barnyard animal up against her Alex Perry cocktail dress.

“You have to be kidding,” she said to the man.

“When nudging doesn’t work, sometimes you have to get hands-on.”

Charlie blew out a breath. She was tucking that away in her idea of how to handle him too. But she was preoccupied at the moment.

And not so sure she wanted to kiss him after all.

No, that wasn’t true. She still wanted to kiss him. Especially now that he was standing closer.

Even if she had to kiss him over the back of a goat.

Which probably meant she really wanted to kiss him.
