“You’re trouble tonight, aren’t you?” Her fingertips dance along my traps as she brushes past me. “And yes, to answer your question, I did, in fact, bring the red bikini.”
She disappears down the hall to the spare bedroom, where she’s sleeping tonight. Because I invited her to stay at my place this weekend rather than at King’s. It’s not that she isn’t welcome there. It’s more that she wants them to have their privacy. It also means I get more time with Hanna, so it’s a win all the way around. And I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t been thinking a lot about time alone with her this weekend.
I change into my swim trunks, pour myself a scotch, heavy on the rocks, and her a glass of wine before I make my way outside. I set the drinks on the outdoor dining table, remove the hot tub cover and check the temperature, making sure it’s not too hot.
Once I carry the drinks over and set them in the cup holders, I sink into the hot, bubbly water, stretch my arms out, let my head fall back and my eyes close. All the time I’ve been spending with Hanna is starting to get to me.
Reminding me that I’m in my forties, and very much still a bachelor. There are a lot of reasons why getting involved with Hanna on a romantic level would not be a good idea. Queenie and King’s relationship being at the forefront.
But she’s fun. And sexy. And we get each other.
A minute later, the sound of the sliding door opening and closing and the slap of flip-flops against the deck have me cracking a lid.
“You better not be sleeping already!” she calls out.
“Not sleeping, just waiting on you.”
I watch as she pulls the tie on her robe and the terry fabric slips over her shoulders, revealing that red bikini I’m such a fan of. Hanna is all curves. Amazing curves. The kind I’ve fantasized about putting my hands on plenty of times over the past several months. And with us spending a lot more time together, it’s been hard not to give in to the constant draw.
I rise from the water and hold out a hand as she climbs the steps. Her fingers slip into my palm, sending a jolt down my spine and a stirring inside my swim trunks.
“Could you try to be a little less beautiful all the time?”I tease as I help her into the tub. “Could you try to have more of a dad bod?” She drags her fingers down my abs, brows waggling, a smile on her gorgeous face. “You are definitely good for my ego, Jake.” She pats me on the chest and sinks into the water on the opposite side of the tub from me.
Which is probably a good thing since I feel like we’re playing with fire tonight. The kind I wouldn’t mind pouring a gallon of gasoline on just to watch it burn brighter.
“That was a great engagement party. I think the kids had fun, don’t you?”She stretches her legs out. Her toes skim the outside of my thigh and I barely resist the urge to run my hand up her calf.
I don’t know what’s in the air tonight, but things seem…different. Heightened.
“Yeah. It was good,” I agree. She pokes me with her toe. “Then why are you frowning? You’ve been off all night. What’s going on?” With all the planning and talks we’ve been having, Hanna and I have gotten to know each other better. And she can read me pretty easily.
“I don’t know. On one hand, I’m happy for King and Queenie and I know he’s going to be a great husband to my daughter, but I spent all these years raising her, and being there for her. They’ve been living together for months, but for some reason, it’s all kind of hitting me. It’s real now.” I take a sip of my scotch. “It’s different from when she went away to college, and even when she moved out of the pool house and in with King. There’s this hole I didn’t expect.”
“It sounds like empty nester’s syndrome.” She moves to the spot beside to me, where the glass of wine I poured her sits.
“Is that what this is? I’m all morose and shit.”
She chuckles and props her elbow on the edge of the tub. “You need to look at it with a fresh perspective, that’s all. You’re not losing your daughter. It’s different with girls. Sure, she’s found her partner in life, but she’s always going to be your baby girl. And the two of you are so close.”
“I don’t know what to do with all of this freedom,” I admit. “My entire life up to this point has been revolved around raising Queenie and my career.”
“Which means you did your job. And that’s a good thing. Think about it, Jake. This is the great part about having a kid young. Sure, you lost out on the freedom of your twenties, but in some ways, this is even better. You’re in your forties. You have a great job, you’re in incredible shape.” She twists and pulls her knee up so it rests against my thigh, her arm extending along the back of the tub, fingertips skimming my . “You have all of your hair.”
“I’m definitely grateful for the last one,” I joke.
“You have great hair.” She runs her fingers through it. “It’s sexy.” She bites her lip and then shakes her head. “Anyway, what I’m saying is, you’re in the prime of your life. Most people in their forties are raising teens, or maybe their kids are getting ready to go to college. You’ve done all that. Now you can just live. You can date. Have fun. Do whatever you want.”
“Fun would be good.”My gaze drops to her lips. “And I’d like to do whatever I want.”
“Me, too.” Her bottom lip slides through her teeth. “Like right now I could kiss you.”
“You definitely could.” I skim her thigh under the water with my fingertips.
She nods. “There’s nothing stopping us.”
“So why aren’t your lips on mine yet?” I ask.
Hanna shifts again, her wet palms come to rest on either side of my jaw, and she presses her soft lips to mine.
I slip my hand under her hair and wrap it around the back of her neck. For a moment, I question whether this is a good idea. But when our lips part and our tongues meet, I forget all the reasons why it might not be.
I groan as I sink into the kiss and our tongues tangle. She tastes fruity, like the wine she’s been drinking. She straddles me and settles in my lap, her breasts pressing against my chest.
She breaks the kiss for a moment and our eyes meet. “I’ve been thinking about this for months.”
“I’ve wanted to know what your lips taste like since the first day I met you,”

Review – A Gorgeous Villain by Saffron A. Kent

A  love story that honestly rocked me with how intense these two characters were.

First off, I adore the writing style of Saffron Kent. It’s completely different to most authors I currently read, which is probably why I’m drawn to her, not to mention her books are excellent. Her stories are filled with symbolism and foreshadowing which remind me of classic literature. I also love how Saffron has made each St. Mary book unique according to traits of each character. It really gives each storyline its own flavor which in extension displays the characters unique love.

Arrow and Salem’s story carried a poetic timbre throughout their entire story, which was entirely fitting for them, whereas Reed and Callie’s story reads more like a three act play.  Why is this symbolic? Well, I hope you find out, but here’s a few key notes;  love, heartbreak, remorse, growth, more tragedy, and of course a big end scene. Sounds a lot like a Shakespearean play doesn’t it? Hmmmm. Well, let’s hope Reed and Callie live through theirs since Shakespeare doesn’t like to keep his players alive. Although this is a romance novel so fingers crossed.

Reed is going to melt you right to the ground. He has layers and layers and even more layers. Keep unwrapping that gorgeous villain, Reed is all that and a bag of chips.

Callie evolves in the years she’s attended St. Mary’s. Stronger and not so naïve. Everyone has a moment where they regret huge mistakes, but I think Callie recognizes that the huge turning point in her life made her a better woman and sometimes we all need those moments of falling down to get back up stronger.

While this story can be read on it’s own, it’s truly best to read them together as the girls are all friends and lean on each other for support, but if you haven’t read book one, don’t worry, this love story stands on its own.

“I’m just asking,” I say, “are you sure you want to bet your future on a myth?” Because, to be honest, something inside me wishes she’d get up and say, screw you, fate, I’m taking my future in my own hands.
“Would I bet my future?” she asks.
I nod and lean forward to hear her answer.
Slowly, she says, “I’d bet everything.”
Her words ring in my ears. She’s serious. She’ll do anything to get with this random guy she hasn’t seen in nearly twenty years. It’s like a cosmic joke, except I’m not laughing. I guess I shouldn’t have expected anything less.
“It’s a myth,” I say. “It’s not real.”
“It is,” she says. She points her finger at me and jabs me in the chest. “And I’m going to prove it to you.” Her hand rests over my heart. We both look down at her touching me. She yanks it back and wipes her hand on her napkin.
No man likes to see a woman wipe herself off after touching him. I scowl and then take her unspoken challenge. “More likely, by the end of this week, I’ll prove that soul mates don’t exist.”
“Good luck, you have hundreds of Aunt Erma’s successes against you.”
No worries, I stand by my belief that the whole town of Romeo is suffering from romantic delusions. Hey, the tourism dollars depend on it.
Also, I’d like to push a little bit of reality into this situation and throw out the idea that this guy might not be decent.
“He could be a rapist,” I say. That gets her attention. Her head snaps up and she glares at me.
“Or a Lothario,” she says. Take that, her eyes say. She bares her teeth at me in a semblance of a grin and I smile back. Game on.
The minstrel who had wandered close again hightails it to the other side of the restaurant.
“He could be a drug dealer,” I say.
“Or a pharmacist,” she says.
“He could be an alcoholic.”
“A vintner.”
“He’s unemployed,” I say.
“Independently wealthy.”
“He looks like a frog.”
“He’s a prince,” she says.
“He’s boring.”
“Strong and silent.”
I glare at her and she glares back, a smile curving on her lips.
“Bad in bed,” I say.
“A sex god.” She bites at her lower lip and I have the urge to take it in my mouth and show her a decade of pent-up wanting. I yank my thoughts from her lips and drop my ace in the hole.
“He could be an ax murderer,” I say. Take that and chew on it.
She laughs, throaty and low, and her eyes light up. The candlelight sparks off her glowing skin.
“Or,” she says, “he’s a lumberjack. Mmmm. Sexy ax. I’ll hold the handle. Rawr.” She claws her hand and scratches at the air.
I shake my head. “You got it.” I hold up my goblet of mead for a toast. “To Matt Smith. Chloe’s lumberjack soul mate.”

They spoke at the same time.
Then stared at each other.
“What?”

“I was trying to give you some freaking space before I said anything.” He seemed very annoyed suddenly.
She leaned in, bracing her hand on the seat between them. “The last person I need space from is you, Fletcher. I mean, we’ve basically been dating for twenty years. If dating is about getting to know someone and figuring out how well you fit with them and figuring out if you want to spend the rest of your life with them…we’ve done that.”
He shook his head. “You have got to be one of the most exasperating people in my life.”
Her eyebrows rose. “Considering your twin brothers are Zeke and Zander, being one of the most exasperating people in your life is pretty huge.”
He shook his head. “Absolutely exasperating. To think I could’ve kissed you when we were standing next to a king-sized bed and you were only in your bra and panties and you would have been all in.”
Jordan felt her cheeks flush, but she grinned widely. “I really am a pain.”
“You really are.” His gaze dropped to her mouth.
Jordan felt a zing of excitement go through her. She really wanted him to kiss her.
“I think you dating me is a great idea,” he said after a moment.
Thank God.
“You’re sure you’re done dating other people? Having fun with all those girls? All the casual relationships?” she asked.
“If it means I get to be with you? Absolutely.”
Her stomach swooped, harder and faster than before. “This isn’t crazy?”
“It makes a hell of a lot more sense than anything else. Like you dating other men. Or either of us being with anyone else.”
“We’ve never talked about this before.”
“You’ve been taken,” he said simply.
Right. That was true. And Fletcher was too good of a guy to go after another man’s girl.
She still felt compelled to say, “It’s been three years since anything happened.”
“Again, because you’ve been taken.” His voice dropped. “Only because you’ve been taken, Jordan.”
Her heart skittered at that and she wet her lips. She thought about her next words carefully. Several seconds ticked by. Then she said simply, “Prove it.”
Fletcher reached out, wrapped his big hand around her wrist, and tugged her close. He cupped the back of her head and brought her in until they were nose to nose. “This changes everything,” he said. Almost as if it was a warning.
“I know.”
“I’m the last frog you’re ever going to kiss. So be sure you want it now.”
That was exactly what she’d wanted to hear without even realizing it.

Fall in love with Alaska while falling in love with Toni and Bash. I was giggling and deeply sighing while rapidly flipping pages over this adorable couple so I could watch them fall in love even faster.

I love falling in love with the town over and over again, but even more with each couple that finds their couple match up. Toni and Bash are absolutely perfect and so is their story!

There is almost nothing better than when a childhood crush finally gets fulfilled. For me, those are one of my favorite and fully satisfying romance stories to read. Toni had a huge crush on her brother’s best friend, Bash Rivers, from the moment she knew what a teenage crush was. Unfortunately, in the ultimate definition of the word, Bash crushed her teenage heart when he left town years ago and he ultimately took her heart with him, unbeknowingly. Toni’s kept every relationship superficial up to that point, but when Bash comes back to town as much as she’d like to reexamine those old feelings…well…Bash is now her boss, perhaps it’s time to take a look at her life and the next phase of where she wants to go. It might be time to unfriendzone some people and take a long hard look at what she wants.

Bash owes a lot to Sally, the owner of the Olde Salt Saloon, along with the Del Rey family. When Sally decides to retire Bash can’t pass up her offer, but more than that he wants to visit his best friend, Tristan, who recently had an accident and even see Tristan’s tagalong sister, Toni. It’s been a few years since he’s actually seen Toni and once he does he likes what he sees, but things are complicated, even with the intense chemistry he feels brewing between them. She technically works for him now, she’s also the sister of his best friend who is still recovering from a serious accident and lastly, but no more important, Bash doesn’t know if he’s actually going to stay in Lost Harbor for good. Ignoring all his feelings and emotions is best, until he no longer can.

Some of my favorite parts of this book are when either Toni or Bash are in the Saloon. The patrons are hilarious, especially when Bash is first learning. They give him grief, in the best way that a small town knows how. Toni of course knows everyone, and even though Bash should since he grew up there, it’s been over a decade since he left and new people come and old people go. That saying that as much as things stay the same, things also change. Toni and Bash are perfect together for that very reason, especially in a local hangout.

I get giddy anytime someone new pops up wondering whose story could potentially be next. I  seriously could never get tired of returning to Lost Harbor. Fan for life here.

When Sparks Fly is Hunting’s contemporary side mixed with her light humor. This had more of a realistic twist infused with Hunting’s fantastic romantic flare and dusted with her wit and charm.

This book takes two emotionally damaged people, given real life drama and solutions and then they still have to figure out if they are better off together or apart at the end.

Declan and Avery have been best friends since college and have been living together has roommates for the past couple years since graduation. They have been through a lot together, but have never dated or even crossed a line into indecent waters. They both have been able to put each other in a friendship box with absolutely zero trouble, but when Avery gets seriously injured and needs help with basic needs, some shall we say, lines have to be crossed just so Avery can use the bathroom or take a shower. The proverbial box is opened and it’s hard to close once things have been released.

Declan is there for Avery- 24/7 . As her caregiver, he will do or give Avery whatever she needs, literally anything to make sure she heals properly. He can’t even imagine what he would have done had she not survived her accident so he truly becomes a hovering, over protective stalker. While he knows it’s not healthy, he also can’t stop and while Avery isn’t in a place to help herself he’s fine, but when she begins to heal…Declan slowly unravels, but remember that opened box…yeah it’s trouble for both of them.

These two may have known each other for years, but when their relationship begins to change neither are prepared for the emotional pileup that is coming for them. Deck is a normal self-saboteur and Avery never lets anyone in emotionally. While these two think their friendship basis is strong enough to handle everything, hopefully it will be enough to withstand their heartbreaks.

This book is different than a lot of Helena’s other works, but it is still crafted with her great writing and fun wit. It’s a 4.5 overall only because Deck was a bit of a hard sell for me personally. I normally love Helena’s hero’s, even her jerky ones which I seem to love more (like Shippy), but again this was just my personal opinion on Declan.

Synopsis:

Running the Spark House, a hotel/event space that has been in her family for years, has been Avery Spark’s lifelong dream. After years of working hard and making personal sacrifices, Avery and her two younger sisters have turned the Spark House into the premier destination in Colorado Springs. Avery is living her best life—she works with her sisters and loves every minute of it, she has a great group of friends, and she lives in a fantastic condo with her best friend Declan. She might not have any love in her life, but she’s happy.

Another great addition to the astrological stars series by these two great writers. Each one has been extremely different and this setting in Sin City with a alphabet dating theme was a really fun twist. Evette and Nic both live in Las Vegas and know how hard it is to actually meet someone, not that Nic is actually looking, but he does sympathize with Evette when she comes to the bar he works at on the night she is searching for her “P”.

You see most people in Las Vegas are there for vacation or a weekend/business trip, so finding someone to really connect with for the long haul is tricky. Evette doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to men ,so with the help of her best friend, they came up with dating rules which include dating men according to the letters of the alphabet. Evette was all the way down to the letter P when she meets Nic, already past the letter N, because Nic is a fun guy, but being the helpful bartender he is, he also joins in on her adventure and becomes her extra wingman thus beginning their friendship.

Even though Evette is attracted to Nic and multiple times wishes she hadn’t already met an “N” man, Nic is also the kind of man she is trying to avoid.  Nic is fun, flirty, loves adventure, isn’t clingy, obviously has a job, loves his family…however, aside from not falling into the correct letter of the alphabet when she needs it…he’s also a huge commitmentphobe. He believes in living life to the extreme and that means no relationships and unfortunately that is why Evette is searching through the alphabet. She’s tired of being alone, so she refuses to give up on her quest.

No matter how much fun these two have as friends and circle each other, is there any real hope of a future when they both want different things?

I love to read each month and see what these two authors have cooked up as this series continues. Each one is a complete standalone and the only recurring theme are the traits around the astrological sign. They are all so different and I love it!

Siobhan Davis’ most emotional book to date!! This book includes high intensity, cliff diving emotions where it was almost impossible to read through all of my tears.

Just when you think your heart can’t squeeze anymore or that your throat can’t choke back any more of your tears, another emotional moment happens and suddenly the words blur on the page and you have to stop anyway because you can no longer read what’s in front of you. This happened over and over again while reading the second half of this duet. I was truly an emotional mess. I’m normally a quick reader, but until someone invents windshield wipers for my eyeballs, I had to stop multiple times because it was a tropical storm happening right in front of my face making it impossible to read or even breathe.

Let Me Love You is real in a way that connected to pieces of my life which made those waterworks fall over and over. At the heart and center of the story is Vivian. She is loved, and loves, by two men who are very different, but who are also quite similar. There is a reason for that connection and why it runs so deep, but I’ll let you discover why and how she gets to her final choice. It’s obviously emotional and truly a beautiful story. Can I mention how touching it was one more time? I need a moment to go wipe my face…

My absolute favorite part of this entire book is Vivian’s son, Easton. He is a shining jewel throughout the second half of this duet. His brilliant personality and inquisitive mind not only made me laugh, but he also brought tears to my eyes multiple times. Children truly make life better.

If you love an emotional book, then I HIGHLY recommend this duet. It’s worth every tear!!

I need to start by gushing over just how excellent Webster’s writing truly is. The heartfelt tenderness, emotional agony, and overall angst that she brings out in her characters is so compelling it draws me in every single time that even though I burn through the pages, I never want to leave.

Feuds and Reckless Fury is about two boys who would appear to be complete opposites, but inside may be more alike than they think.

Canyon in the beginning has a girlfriend, is a football player and comes from a traditional family – his life falls apart before his senior year, when his father leaves – not for another woman, but for a man. Canyon’s angry. Pretty much beyond angry and lashes out in drastic measures. K. Webster is great at capturing all the normal teenage angst along with all the emotions of a devastating blow such as this. Canyon sets his sights on ripping apart his father’s new happiness and the closet target is the new fiance’s son, Alis. It isn’t long before Canyon’s traditional life falls apart and everything he thought he knew is shifting.

Alis is the total opposite of Canyon. He’s in the orchestra, he’s in AP classes, and he’s also gay. When Canyon begins targeting Alis, while Alis may be smaller in stature, he’s not a guy to back down. There’s a reason Alis is top of his class, first chair in the orchestra, the top runner on the track team, etc…If Canyon is going to bully Alis, then Alis is also going to bring his best game. His only fear in retaliation is not getting caught. There is a reason Alis is the best and he will never let Canyon mess that up.

Canyon and Alis may be brought together by circumstance, but their emotional bond grows through their trials, friendship, and exploration of one another. Yes,their steamy times are intense, but what I love about Webster’s writing is that it is always infused with so much feeling that every sensual scene is more than just pleasure. It is a full ride from start to finish full of emotions that are pleasing to all of the senses.

Canyon and Alis deal with a lot of intense emotions through this book, more than just their attraction to each other. Having that partner to rely on, someone to talk to, who understands you and is willing to listen is always so important. I love those moments between these two boys and it’s captured really beautifully on the page.

Feuds and Reckless Fury while it is an enemy to lover story it is just as much a beautiful story about family and mending fractured relationships. Another fantastic win for K. Webster!

Next in Line is different than what I was expecting, not different bad, it was way better!!

It’s been a couple of years since I read Cake, but I still remember Jake McAlister, he is hard to forget. Cake was one of those stories that sticks with you, and the characters never leave so of course I jumped at the chance to read about his baby brother, Quinn. I really wanted to know Quinn’s perspective on growing up under the shadow of his brother’s mega star, but also living in the aftermath of Jake’s kidnapping. These are both life altering experiences and I was fascinated to read how Quinn would handle the outcomes of such huge moments.

Next In Line did NOT DISAPPOINT in any way. It is a story that completely stands on its own. (Yes, Quinn it did!) You see, Quinn’s entire life he felt like he had to be better and outshine his big brother. That’s a quality I think a lot of younger siblings face in any normal family, but when your brother is a mega superstar it’s ten times harder to step out from under his huge shadow. Quinn constantly struggled to make his own mark no matter what he tried to do, especially when everyone just assumed he was riding the coattails of his famous brother. Quinn  desperately wanted to be a star of his own making, but rising to the top isn’t exactly easy…sometimes it’s all about being in the right place at the right time. Or meeting the right person. Quinn is stuck, obviously, under Jake’s shadow, but he’s self-deprecating a lot of the time about it so it makes the continual dig at his big brother palpable. Just when this would seem to get old, Quinn is actually coming to terms with a lot of his emotional baggage with the help of his special angel, Jess. Jake may be the world’s favorite rock star, but after this book, Quinn is my new favorite McAlister.

Jess is quite the firecracker. It’s great for her job, it adds that creative flair and gives her style that most days increases her tip jar. When a desperate, yet hot guy, jumps into her RYde share she never expected her fiery nature to attract his attention and eventually spark a Jesserella pandemonium that pretty much turned her world upside down.

Jess is strong, independent, and full of spirit, which helps carry her throughout the story. I love her character and how she’s lived her life on her own terms even with the hard circumstances she’s been given. Her deeply driven strength helps Quinn over and over, while at the same time his deep sense of familial commitment is highly attractive to her, but also what keeps her shying away. She’s got some secrets of her own that she doesn’t want to hurt Quinn while he’s reaching for the top. Quinn’s never met anyone like her, someone selfless and not looking for a free ride, basically someone like himself.  Jess and Quinn may be from completely opposite worlds, but they share such a similar background that their souls instantly recognized they are connected. One day is all it took, but honestly they didn’t need more than that to really know they had something special.

Their chemistry is instant and their banter is fun while being just the right amount of flirty. They both felt neglected growing up within their own families, but together, for the very first time, they feel seen. They are two halves of a whole and work better together than they do apart. This whole book was different than I was expecting, but also so much better than my expectations. I really loved visiting this family again. It was a great book!
