A different take on the forbidden romance, with a grumpy hero that is easy to fall in love with and a sassy heroine with a ton of spirit.

Max and Madelyn are a slow to burn romance wrapped up in a mafia story that is unlike any other I’ve read before. Madelyn has basically been locked away for most of her life and her father has been unsuccessfully been trying to marry her off, that is until the big mafia boss asks for her hand and this time her greedy father doesn’t say no. The age difference is probably grandfather to granddaughter spread, but it’s what he does, his personality, etc…along with his age that has Maddie disgruntled with the decision and nothing will  stop her from halting the marriage, if it’s the last thing she ever does.

Max has worked for Johnny Maldonado for the past five years. He’s worked his way up in the organization garnering any information he can and he won’t let a wealthy princess get in his way of what he’s after.

Max was super grumpy about his job and Maddie was extremely oblivious about the world she grew up in…was this intentional? Knowing the beautiful style Ivy Wild typically writes, I’m going to say yes.

There were so many hints dropped along the way that there was a lot more depth to these characters than the shallowness they give off at first, it was certainly what kept me reading because I had to know what secrets Max was holding on to and I just knew Maddie was full of more than the princess cover she portrayed. I’ll just drop that yes, both characters grew in depth and the story was twisty and gave exactly what I was expecting from an Ivy Wild book.

These two, once they let their guards down, discovered they had more in common then they ever would have thought; a wealthy girl that Max calls Princess and a mafia thug with more than meets the eye. Perhaps with the same end goal, they could help one another, if they don’t get caught and end up dead in the process.

I turn on the flashlight and trudge through the brush and past the campfire, which incidentally has been left unattended. It’s down to a smolder, but Van has left out hot dog sticks and a bag of buns.

I keep going, toward Bee’s front porch and the blinding spotlight. Standing in front of the cottage is Van. Shirtless. Sweaty and shirtless. The bright light shines directly on him, accenting the dips and ridges, the smooth planes of muscle.

Van is ripped. Probably because he spends a lot of time at the gym, staring at his own reflection in the mirror. He lifts his ball cap from his head and runs a hand through his deliciously sweaty dark hair before he flips his cap around and replaces it, backward this time.

I roll my eyes at myself. What the hell is wrong with me? Deliciously sweaty. “Hey!” I bark.

He startles and the hammer in his hand goes flying, but he was on the back swing, so it heads in my direction. I sidestep it, and it manages to miss me by about six inches. He spins around, eyes wide as they land on me. “What the fuck?”

“Do you realize what time it is?”

“Do you realize that you scared the living shit out of me and I could’ve hurt you, or myself?” He motions to the hammer lying on the ground next to me.

“Wouldn’t that have been a pity,” I snap.

“What the hell is your damn problem?”

“You.” I point a finger at him. “You are the problem. It’s after ten. There’s a bylaw in place around here that stipulates all construction takes place between the hours of seven a.m. and nine p.m. from June to August, and you’re violating that. And for what? It’s not like whatever you’re doing is going to matter when your damn plan is to parcel out the property!” I’m yelling now, and heaving. And my nipples are peaking under the white tank I wore to bed. I hug myself to hide them.

“This is the second time you’ve said that. What the hell are you talking about?”

“What do you mean, what am I talking about?” I flail for a second and then cross my arms again. “You called me about it. Bee wasn’t gone a couple of weeks, and you were already asking about acreage and subdividing. It doesn’t take a genius to know what your plans are!”

“I don’t even know what you mean by subdividing, and I never called you.”

“Yes, you did!” He’s just so infuriating.

“No. I didn’t. Believe me, I’d remember dealing with someone as hostile as you.”

“I am not hostile.”

“Really?” Van props a fist on his hip. His narrow hip.

I follow the movement, which leads my eyes to his waist, that enticing V of muscle dragging my gaze down farther. Of course, because my brain is a jerk, the image of him naked pops back into my brain.

As if he’s reading my mind, his brow arches. “You’re picturing me naked right now. Aren’t you?”

“What? No!” My eyes snap back up to his.

“Yeah. You are.” His lip curls, somewhere between a smirk and sneer, his tone needling. “You were staring at my crotch, probably thinking about the last time you visually molested my junk. Is that why you stopped by? To check me out again? This whole fake phone call thing is an excuse for you to come back over here and get a look at the goods again.” He runs a hand down his chest.

“You’re an egotistical asshole. I realize that this might be some kind of fun holiday for you, and that you’re probably sleeping until noon every day, but some of us have to be up at the crack of dawn. Bylaw hours are seven a.m. to nine p.m. Next time you break them, expect to get a visit from the sheriff.” I spin around and stomp over to the extension cord, find the place where it’s joined to the lamp, and break the connection, submerging us in darkness. “Next time I won’t be so nice about it.”

“Hate to break it to you, but you weren’t very nice about it this time,” he calls after me.

It drives me crazy how easy it is for him to push my buttons.

A few seconds later I hear an oof and a clatter, which means he’s tripped over something in the dark. I smile to myself. Hopefully this time he’ll get the message.

Winning With Him picks up right where we left Grant and Declan, but Lauren brings us that heart stopping moment where Grant’s heart was smashed. However, this time it’s from Declan’s POV and why he had to let the best man he’s ever known go.

Winning With Him takes us from spring training where these two fell in love and spans over five years with so many touching moments and moments that will rip your heart out. There is a constant back and forth, pull and tug throughout the years with baseball always at the center, after all that was the agreement when they first met. Nothing would stand in the way of their career, especially love.

As much as I love Blakely’s romcom’s, I really love when Lauren delves deeper into her emotional writing. She brings out passion and depth in her characters which made this duet a steller read.

There is no denying that Ella and Brooke are an dynamic writing duo and Dare You is just another example of how AMAZING this author team is!

I was engaged and completely engrossed in Bash and Kieran’s story from start to finish and then left hanging and salivating from the cliffhanger. Sobbing, “NOOOOOOOO”, and flipping back and forth multiple times because how could that be the end. I need more of these two fantastic men and their story. Luckily, there will be more in the next part of the trilogy, but sadly I have to wait, along with everyone else, until that happens.

Kieran Bailey is no stranger to the queer community, although I should probably rephrase that to say, he is no stranger to the gay community. His brother’s are both gay, and while his middle brother has been out of the closet basically his entire life, he is your run of the mill average guy who wears khaki’s. His oldest brother is an entirely different story who only recently came out when he fell in love with everyone’s favorite news host, but Sean is still very much the same sports watching, beer drinking annoying big brother.

Now Kieran, one of Chicago’s finest firefighter’s, meets Bash while rescuing him from a burning building. Kieran honestly mistakes Bash for a gorgeous woman, an easy mistake given that Bash was in full drag, but with each encounter after that, it was Bash’s confident and easy going personality that continued to pull him back in. He’d never met a man like Bash in his entire life and while their time together may have begun as friendship, it soon blossomed into something more. The real trouble is Kieran doesn’t know how to feel about the budding and changing feelings swirling inside of him. Should he have looked to his family for help? Perhaps, but his work schedule and spending every free moment with Bash made that task nearly impossible.

Bash was smitten with Kieran from the moment the hot firefighter threw him over his broad shoulder. Bash wanted to thank the hero for saving his life, personally if he could, but even if he couldn’t make those wishes come true he wanted to extend his gratitude. (Their date-non-dates are simply the best). It could have been fate, but Bash and Kieran seemed to run into one another in the big city of Chicago and Bash never snubbed fate. He boldly pursued what he wanted, even if he knew Kieran wasn’t exactly achievable. You see, Kieran was straight. Working his way through the fine women of Chicago. So while Bash didn’t normally hit on straight men, he just couldn’t seem to help himself when it came to the fine firefighter. These two formed a friendship while Bash flirted unabashedly every single time they were together. Nothing would have happened if attraction wasn’t there, but sparks eventually lit a fire between them and wowza…what a fire!!!

However, with Bash only in town to close a deal and the underlying thoughts of where a relationship could really go…things were bound to get messy.

I desperately need more of Bash and Kieran, so I can hardly wait for more of this couple and to see what happens next.

Lexi Blake’s Bayou world is a slow stroll down charming neighborhoods and visits with old friends. It’s a vacation from the intense adventures of her Masters and Mercenaries world, but still just as enjoyable. The characters are well written and the entire plot is flushed out. It’s a place I enjoy revisiting time and again.

Papillon is a small town where everyone knows everyone, but in times of need they all rally together to lend a helping hand. It is certainly how Rene became so close to Sylvie’s family growing up even given their economic differences, in a town their size those differences didn’t matter in the eyes of children looking to play. As time wore on Sylvie developed a huge crush on Rene, but their age difference allowed them to grow apart, now with time and distance out of the way there is nothing holding them back aside from a cavern of years between them. They have to learn about each other all over again, but this time there is a ticking time clock working against them. Rene now has to marry to save his company and time is literally not on his side. When will they ever get a break?

It took a little bit to jump into the chemistry between Rene and Sylvie, but once they clicked the story really took off. I’m not talking about heat between the sheets either, I’m talking about their spark, their flirting, their mutual “I want you, but I can’t have you” vibe. It was like the zipper was off track at first, but it didn’t take long before they became unstuck and then zipped together, if that analogy makes sense.

There is a bit of a mystery that goes along with this story. The element of “who is behind the mask” is always fun to figure out while the characters are sorting out their feelings for one another. A sweet romance, with a bit of intrigue, to add to any summer reading.

Although, I feel like I need to go back and re-read each book in the Kingmaker series because I feel like I missed clues or easter eggs that all led up to this brilliant conclusion. Again, total mind blown moments throughout the entire book.

I was captivated and I’ve been dying to know who the spy was leading up to this book, but like Sophie…I won’t let the cat out of the bag either.

We return to Kingmakers with new freshman, the classes (I still love the entire concept behind mafia courses) and the potential of Leo Gallo being the four time captain-champion of the school’s games. Everything is familiar and yet as mysteries slowly unraveled (which brought me immense glee) and all of the truth bombs began to explode the story puzzle began to take shape. The ending was coming, but it was also magnificent.

Probably one of the best things I have loved about this series is how Sophie wove all secondary characters throughout each book to the point that each person was perfectly placed and became just as important to the storyline as the main characters.  Friendship and loyalty, something you wouldn’t expect perhaps from mafia students, but it runs deep through these books and the love they have for each other is a bond that became unbreakable.

While I’m sad to see this series come to an end, it truly had the perfect ending and everything was tied up.

I read all the way to the highway exit, but I only get halfway through the first article. It’s dense and full of statistical analysis that’s over my head. 

By the time Rickie rolls down the exit ramp, I feel the onset of a full-blown case of imposter syndrome. Dr. Drummond is expecting me to be sharp. What if they ask me to work on this type of analysis, and I can’t do it?

“I see the ice cream place,” Rickie says. “But there’s no entrance back onto the highway. What the hell?”

“Doesn’t matter,” I mumble. “It’s three miles down a side road to exit 6.” I close the journal with a sigh. I feel so panicky right now. I’ve always tried to be the smartest girl in the room. But it’s all an act. I’m obviously the worst kind of dunce—the kind that can’t see her own mistakes until it’s way too late. (See: the last twelve months of my life.)

Is it normal to have a midlife crisis right before your twenty-first birthday?

Rickie rolls into the gravel parking lot of the Dreamy Creemee and puts the truck in a shady spot. He rolls down the windows before killing the engine. It’s getting toward dinner hour, so there aren’t many people here. Just a couple of moms pushing toddlers on the swing set.

And I’m quietly having a panic attack in the passenger seat.

I take a slow but shaky breath. Do I even want ice cream? Is there a flavor on that signboard that could take me out of my own head? I reach for the door handle, but Rickie stops me. 

“Look,” he says. “About that time we shared a ride home from Connecticut…” 

“No,” I say forcefully. If he makes me relive that embarrassing experience, I might lose my cool. “Just forget it, okay? So what if you ghosted me?”

His eyes widen. But my rant is only picking up steam. 

“None of that matters. I didn’t even blame you. And the only way I’m going to make it through this year is if I put Connecticut behind me, okay? Just leave it alone.” 

My voice cracks on that last word, and I realize that I might actually cry. Which is a thing I never do. But Harkness College was my dream, and I blew it. My damn eyes get hot and my throat constricts. 

“S-so just forget it,” I squeak. “It’s already in the past. It can just stay there.” 

Rickie’s gray eyes are soft now. And they’re moving closer. To my utter surprise, he leans forward and presses a kiss to my lips.

So soft, my brain sputters. 

“Shh,” he says against my lips. His kiss is warm and unhurried. Like a ray of sunshine when you’re shivering. 

For once, my squirrel brain forgets to scurry. And I just let it happen. He kisses me again. It’s still gentle. His bright eyes measure me. I don’t know what he sees. But whatever it is, he decides he likes it. 

Those soft lips brush and press. Again. And I’m only human. Rickie’s surprisingly tender kiss has caught me at a vulnerable moment. I lean in, experimenting with the slide and pressure of his mouth against mine. A sizzle of heat flashes across my skin. It’s the strangest sensation—as if he’s transferred an ounce of that devil-may-care attitude across the steering column and right into my soul. I drink him in, lips parted. Ready for him to take it further.

But then it ends. Rickie sits back, his head cocked to the side, as if in deep contemplation.

I’m bereft. “Wh-what was that for?” I stammer.

I expect a smirk. But his expression remains soft. “You seemed a little freaked. So I brought you to an ice cream place on a hot summer’s day. But that wasn’t enough, apparently. You needed even more distraction. So I gave it to you. And I’m good at that. A real specialist.”

Replying is impossible. All I can do is sit here and try to process that kiss. That lovely kiss. 

He really has some nerve.

As I walk Sienna to her car, she squeals. “Holy crap, is that Rider Kingston?”
Without my permission, my gaze slides across the street to the oversized man-child, who has the gall to be moving furniture shirtless while flexing his stupid abs. Judging by the other sweaty minions pouring out of the two story, Rider’s getting new roommates too.
My eye twitches again, and my focus snaps back to Sienna. “I thought you said you weren’t a fan of football.”
