King of Hearts; Rake Forge University #2
(#2 within a series)
Publication Date: November 5, 2021
Genre/Tropes: Mafia/Enemies to Lovers/New Adult Romance
Author: Ashley Munoz
Review/Synopsis:
A slow burn, with a ton of tension between two frenemies in a race against time.
Juan and Taylor have known each other for the past several years. Juan is the best friend of Taylor’s sister and while Juan has an easy going personality around everyone else in his life, there is an instant friction that burns hotter than the sun when these two are in a room together.
Taylor knows she’s abrasive, direct, doesn’t make friends easily. Her upbringing didn’t allow her to get close to anyone so she instantly pushes people away. Juan is no different, even though she’s had a crush on him for years. She just knows better that to act on said crush since she’s already promised to killer on her twenty-first birthday.
While reading the first book in the Rake Forge series will definitely give you insight into Taylor and Juan’s characters and how Taylor ended up in her current condition, the plot itself is a standalone. Their romance is a slow burn, but these two burn bright with chemistry from the very beginning. They have enemies to lovers down pat and perfect the push and pull in a frustrating…JUST ADMIT YOU LOVE EACH OTHER ALREADY! LOL
Juan is pulled to Taylor in a way he doesn’t understand and yet he continually pushes her away to save his own heart. Taylor also can’t help how she feels, she’s been attracted to Juan for years, but the moment she remembers what’s in store for her as her birthday approaches she pushes him away. It’s a story that broke my heart over and over at their circumstances, hoping they would find an answer to their problem.
A great addition to the Rake Forge series with lots of passion, emotion, and character development.
Synopsis:
Reminders were for traitors.
My father used to whisper that in my ear when I was young, while the still smoking gun dangled at his side.
I understood the rules, and what was expected of me, even as my mother made the deal.
I had absolute freedom to do as I pleased, as long as I obeyed:
Return to his home at twenty-one, do not make him come looking…and do not jeopardize my impending union with Markos Marino.
Now, months away from my twenty-first birthday, and I’m not only running out of time and creative ways to avoid my upcoming marriage, but I also have a bit of a situation that I can’t exactly hide. It’s one to surely come with a reminder…because in this, I haven’t been loyal…and I most certainly haven’t followed the rules.
