Reverie and Redemption
(A standalone)

Publication Date: December 9, 2021

Genre/Tropes: Reverse Harem/ Supernatural Romance

Author: Kaydence Snow

Review Rating: 5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:

This is a beautiful story that takes a new spin on a centuries old folktale. I was drawn in by the lush words and fell down into the rabbit hole from the very beginning and loved the entire book.

Kaydence Snow spins a gorgeous tale about forgiveness, friendship, love and redemption. A story that touches on the human condition, how people treat others when someone isn’t like you, but what I loved is that Reverie never gave in to pity, spitefulness, or had a hardened heart.

Reverie has been alone most of her life. First losing her family and friends to a strange phenomenon, where those close to her fall into a strange fugue like state, sometimes awakening and sometimes not.  This strange fate caused those in the town she’s lived in her entire life to distance themselves from her, even to belittle her in public. It broke my heart on how those she grew up with treated her, but Reverie never let it get her down.

Reverie has been on her own for so long, when she begins to hear voices, she thinks she’s finally losing it. Little does she know that these voices belong to three men; Oskar, Hollis, and Sinan known as Dreamwalkers. Her life takes a turn once she “meets” these three guys and discovers why she’s able to communicate with the apparitions. No longer lonely she has someone to talk to and figure out why her life has been plagued by a strange monster.

Oskar, Hollis, and Sinan all have their own stories and how Reverie communicates with them…well, there is a supernatural element that I enjoyed, but I also liked that it didn’t overpower the plot either. The four of them grew into a relationship organically, well, as organically as a relationship like this would and the story flowed at the right pace.

Reverie has a confidence and strength that is to be revered throughout the entire book. She may be alone, but she has built a world around her where she rarely feels lonely. As she gets to know Oskar, Hollis, and Sinan she realizes how much she enjoys their friendship, but they make her see how much they treasure her. She is so strong and I love how she never gives up.

I really loved Kaydence’s take on this centuries old tale and the dreamscapes she builds are quite epic. Each man also came with their own backstory that added a wonderful layer to the storytelling and gave the characters depth, which gave me, the reader, a deeper connection to the entire world.

Reverie and Redemption was so much more than I expected when I started the book and I loved the entire story.

Synopsis:

I’m in love with three men. I’m just not sure if they’re a dream come true or my worst nightmare.

It began with hearing voices – just another step on my steady descent into madness. It was inevitable, considering the whole town hated me and I was the loneliest person on the planet.

I didn’t really blame them, I guess. Everyone who got close to me ended up in the hospital. I’d be suspicious of me too.

When the three distinct, alluring voices in my head started to appear before my eyes as three distinct, gorgeous men I really started to question everything I thought I knew.

They called themselves Dreamwalkers and told me they were hunting the monster attacking all the people around me.

They won’t leave me alone.

I’m not sure I want them too.

But am I the monster they’re after? Or are we all in worse danger than I ever could’ve imagined?

Excerpt:

Hunter snapped into motion the second Alice swayed. He shot across the space between them and caught her in his arms before she could hit the floor.

She blinked up at him, her brilliant green eyes huge in her pale face, and then she smiled a little. “This is not how I imagined the evening going.”

Something in Hunter’s chest clenched at her courage. She’d faced down vampires and now a ghost—and probably had a demon in her house, if Meara had been right—and she still had a sense of humor. He could feel a part of his heart, the small, icy, closed-off part that had faced one too many rejections, take a small, tentative step toward warmth and hope.

He automatically stepped on the feeling. Hard.

Now was not the time.

“What happened?” he asked.

She blew out a shaky breath and pushed gently away from him to stand on her own. “Well, I guess you’re telling the truth about being vampires, because the ghost just told me that you are, and ghosts never lie.”

“Is that all?” Meara hopped gracefully off the table and stalked toward them. “Seemed like a longer conversation than that.”

Alice shrugged, the casual motion contradicted by the wary look in her eyes. “She also told me you want me to die.”

“We do not want you to die,” Hunter said firmly. “We—”

“I know,” Alice said, smoothing wisps of hair away from her face.

“You do?” He was confused. “You just said ghosts don’t lie.”

“Well, they don’t, as far as I know. It’s not like I’ve met all the ghosts in the world or know the secret ghost rulebook.” She gave them just a hint of a smile. “But they can be wrong. How would a dead flapper from a hundred years ago know what your intent is?”

“Exactly!” He was pleased. “And—”

“And simple logic tells me that you probably didn’t rent out an entire restaurant just to kill me, when you could have murdered me at the rescue and left me bleeding out on the floor. Or, I guess, not bleeding out so much as drained.”

His smile faded, but he couldn’t disagree with her logic.

“Look, I’ve never killed anybody and don’t plan to start now, Alice. In fact, I’ve never even bitten anybody,” he growled. “Maybe you could take that much on faith, while we get to know each other.”

“Are we going to get to know each other?” She wrapped her arms around her waist, her body language pure self-protection combined with a touch of fear, but her flashing eyes and raised chin signaled defiance and courage. “I’m not sure that’s such a good idea, no matter how beautiful you are.”

Hunter felt a slow, wicked smile spreading across his face. “Beautiful? I can work with that.”

Meet Sherilee Gray

Sherilee’s always had a big (some say warped) imagination, and as a kid scared herself conjuring up horror stories full of ghosts and other terrifying creatures. She never dreamed of actually writing down any of those wonderful imaginary people or places, not until many years later when her sister introduced her to the wondrous world of romance novels, and her very large book collection.

She’s pleased to say, she still has the big imagination… only now her characters are chasing their happily ever after.

Sherilee Gray is a kiwi girl and lives in beautiful New Zealand with her husband and their two children. When she isn’t writing sexy, edgy contemporary and paranormal romance, searching for her next alpha hero on Pinterest, or fueling her voracious book addiction, she can be found dreaming of far off places with a mug of tea in one hand and a bar of Cadburys Rocky Road chocolate in the other.

Exclusive Excerpt:

When Alice rounded the back of the van, it was to discover that Marigold was no longer in her crate.

Or even in the van.

Instead, she was being held in the muscular arms of the man—ghost—from the hotel.

And the normally good-natured raccoon was hissing.

Alice froze and then forced herself forward. “What are you doing? Give her to me.”

He flashed a wickedly sensual smile that caused a ripple of sensation to wash through her, carrying an unexpected heat to every nerve ending in her body. She suddenly felt too hot, too breathless, too…alive.

“She clearly would prefer to be held by you,” he said easily. “I can’t say that I blame her.”

His blue eyes gleamed, glowing in the reflected brightness of the lantern lights affixed on either side of her front door. When he stepped toward her, she automatically took a step back. This man—this ghost—most definitely didn’t belong in her yard, holding her raccoon. He was… too much.

Too tall, too big, too intense, too gorgeous.

Her breath gave a funny little hitch in her throat.

He was beautiful.

Maybe her age? Late twenties? Or early thirties? Tall; he was easily six feet, maybe a couple of inches more. Broad shoulders angled down to a slim waist with no softness showing anywhere. And he had amazing bone structure. She suddenly wanted to dig out the paints she’d tried out a few times when she was enjoying her new freedom and try to capture the strength in his jaw, the sharpness of his high cheekbones, and the glow in his eyes. His face held a slight beard, as though he hadn’t shaved in the days before he’d died, and those long, dark lashes shaded not just his incredible eyes but the shadows beneath them. His dark hair was swept back from his forehead, as if he’d impatiently shoved it out of his way with one of the large, capable hands that currently held an armful of unhappy raccoon.

Marigold hissed again, snapping Alice out of her trance, and she edged forward, took the angry creature, and stumbled back and away from her unexpected visitor. She swallowed, hard, and tried to regain control of the situation.

The only way to deal with ghosts was to take the reins at the very beginning of each encounter. She thought she’d done this at the hotel, but she’d been caught off guard by the man’s—the ghost’s—aliveness. She’d encountered ghosts who could manipulate objects before, of course, but nothing like this.

“Listen. I—” The amusement in his gaze threw her off, and she forgot what she’d been about to say. So, she asked a basic question to give herself time to regroup. “What is your name? I can’t keep thinking of you as ‘that man’ or ‘that ghost.’”

His devilish smile flashed again. “I like that you keep thinking of me.”
