Defying Gravity (Standalone – companion to Center of Gravity)

Defying Gravity is an emotional three part read. K. K. Allen takes us on a journey of two lovers that meet at different points in their lives only to find that time and circumstance are never on their side. How can love be so cruel as to meet your soulmate so young only to have them leave over and over again because they need their chance to fulfill their own destiny first. This is the story of Amelia and Tobias.

Growing up next door to each other, their romance blossomed in a secret love affair that they kept hidden from their family and friends. When Tobias left for the NBA, Amelia set sights on her own dream, which didn’t exactly turn into the rainbow and sunshine picture she’d always thought it would be. I will say, this part of the story, even though extremely tough to read, is also terribly accurate. Female bullies are the worst especially when it comes to tearing down another’s self-esteem. I do like the message that K.K. Allen sends in the book about women taking control of their image and being proud of their shape. Women should be more supportive of each other instead of instantly ripping one another apart.

When Tobias and Amelia finally get to the point of having a chance of being together, a new challenge gets in their way. Is this the world telling them that they don’t belong together or just a way for them to work together to find a solution to their gravitational pull.

Review – Devlin (7 Brides for 7 Blackthornes #1) by Barbara Freethy

Devlin; 7 Brides for 7 Blackthornes #1 (Series)
by Barbara Freethy (Author)

This review is from: July 21, 2019 By Kay Daniels
Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Heat Level:🔥🔥🔥

An amazing kick off to the start of the Blackthorne series! There was sizzling chemistry between Devlin and Hannah, along with an introduction to the rest of the Blackthorne family, plus we got a look at the tension that was building behind the family scenes of the two Blackthorne patriarchs. Everything to love about a family series was put into this first novel and I’m really looking forward to reading more about the rest of the family.

Devlin is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Even though Devlin manages his own business he does so while working under the ownership of his father, Graham Blackthorne. So when his father makes the decision to fire the lead boat maker/designer, Frank Reid, without consulting Devlin, it ultimately puts him in a tough spot when Frank’s daughter Hannah shows up on his doorstep to chew him out.

Both Hannah and Devlin realize they are both stuck in the middle of a feud between their hard-headed fathers, one that neither seem to make much headway on. While their fathers might not get along, it is clear that Hannah and Devlin have great chemistry together, one that gets harder and harder to ignore the more time that they spend together.

Hannah is only supposed to be in town for a few weeks, helping her father through his rough patch. Devlin isn’t so sure he likes the idea of her leaving town if he can actually get Frank’s job reinstated, but he also knows it’s the right thing to do. Being noble isn’t always easy, especially when it includes matters of the heart.

Hannah left town years ago, but coming back has felt more like home than where she’s lived since she left. Is she going to be ready to leave if her dad gets his job back and more importantly is she going to be able to walk away from the one man who has touched her heart in a very long time?

Welcome to the Blackthorne family. The summer series is just beginning and it is heating up to be a fantastic read.

Review – The Tip-Off by Rebecca Jenshak

The Tip-Off; Smart Jocks #3 (Series)
by Rebecca Jenshak (Author)

This review is from: July 18, 2019 By Kay Daniels
Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Heat Level:🔥🔥🔥

The Smart Jocks series just gets better and better!! The Tip-Off is a wonderful slow-burn novel with a perfectly matched couple. Both Gabby and Zeke are focused, in their own way, and really care about each other emotionally before jumping into something physically, which for both of these characters was absolutely perfect.

Zeke Sweets has a singular focus, basketball. His goal of reaching the NBA hasn’t allowed him for much of anything else; dating, partying, fun. Although if you asked Zeke, basketball is fun, but ask anyone else and they would beg to differ. If you found Zeke, not only would he have his headphones either draped around his neck or on his ears, he isn’t much for conversation, or he would be found with a basketball in his hands. That is until he meets Gabby.

Gabby, Blair’s best friend (you might have met her if you read prior books, but don’t worry it’s not required), also hasn’t experienced much of anything in the past few years, but for a very different reason. Her senior year of high school she was in a very serious accident which basically kept her a hermit, taking online courses to earn her degree. For her final year of college, she has not only decided to attend Valley U, but she has also created a list of things she wants to achieve before her year is over. Her self-imposed hermit status is at an end and fun Gabby is here.

Enlisting Zeke as her partner in crime, or her partner in fun, Gabby and Zeke go about marking lots of things off her list. Zeke isn’t quite sure how he becomes her volunteer, but once he gets roped in more and more he finds himself looking forward to the fun he has around her. Who knew Zeke Sweets knew how to have fun?

For a man who loved his alone time, it doesn’t take long for Zeke to soon crave his time with Gabby and the same can be said for Gabby, Zeke becomes her most important person. Their friendship builds and grows so strong, all the while their chemistry builds until neither can deny what they eventually feel.  But can they really have a future when Zeke is leaving for the NBA and Gabby is just beginning her new found freedom?

The blossoming friendship, emotional bond, and building chemistry was fantastic between Gabby and Zeke! The frequent mention of Zeke’s friends; Joel and Wes (both from the previous books), along with their girlfriends was amazing to have. The third installment to this series is excellent!

Review – Million Dollar Marriage by Katy Evans

Million Dollar Marriage; Million Dollar #2 (Series)
by Katy Evans (Author)

This review is from: July 15, 2019 By Kay Daniels

Heat Level:🔥🔥🔥🔥

A fun romp through a reality TV world. I absolutely loved this book from beginning to end! The concept, the characters, the writing, YES!! I loved absolutely everything!!

Strangers meet and fall in love everyday, normally through dating, hooking up, friendship, work, etc…but reality TV is such a huge part of the television watching world in general, so the idea where people are forced together and then have to work together is always a fascinating socialization concept.

Take for instance the game show, Survivor, which has been around now for about 20 years. We are not only drawn in by the physical challenges, but the social aspects that only reality TV can bring. This is the concept behind Million Dollar Marriage. Social, emotional, and physical. I’d totally watch this fictional show if it became a reality.

Nell (Penelope) is a total brainiac, having worked hard to achieve her PhD, but has she ever watched a reality TV show? No. How did she become a contestant on Million Dollar Marriage? With a little convincing by her best friend to go to the casting call and all the student debt she has piled up to achieve her educational status, so it didn’t take much coercion at all, actually. With her nose constantly in a book, Nell has little to no social skill, plus the heaviest thing she lifts are big books. Can she actually win this game?

Luke is a physical powerhouse, plus he is already business owner owning his own bar. His social game is top notch. He can win with his hands tied behind his back, seriously is that a challenge because he would totally win it. Like Nell he too has a mountain of debt and could use the cash to pull himself out of it. With the assets he brings to the table he’ll win this game even if it means being tied up, tied down, or tied to someone else in matrimony, just don’t ask him to complete a puzzle, that might prove a challenge, you see Luke never graduated high school, he is the complete opposite of Nell in just about every possible way, so being each others partners may be his biggest challenge.

Part of the overall game, did you see the dropped hint of matrimony above? You see Million Dollar Marriage isn’t just a pretty title for a reality TV show. Nell and Luke first have to decide to stay married during their time while on the show, then eventually work together to win each challenge before the other teams do so they can make it to the end and actually win the game.

Together they might just be the best team or perhaps the worst, but if they don’t try they will never know. The social experiment of the game is so much more than Nell and Luke ever expected. Each of them grow and learn from the other without really realizing it, but the real question at the end of everything is…can they actually survive outside of the game? Can they work out in the real world? Could they really sustain a life together when they are completely opposite in every possible way?

Opposites attract, but do they last?

Review – One Kiss by Clara Fox

One Kiss (Novella)
by Clara Fox (Author)

This review is from: July 15, 2019 By Kay Daniels
Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Heat Level:🔥🔥

A destiny-meeting novella filled with mystique, lust-filled dancing and the chance meeting of a lifetime.

Jayne is out with her girlfriends for a night of dancing. The nightclub is hosting a blacklight dance night which adds to the overall mystery, but also allows Jayne a chance to really let loose. During the day she works in a library with the antique/rare book collection, which is a job that requires concentration and discipline. Handling the rare artifacts is a job she loves, but it doesn’t allow a lot of time for goofing off. Meeting a stranger on the dark dance floor, one who gives her sparks upon contact, is fun and exhilarating, but a once in a lifetime moment, or does destiny have other plans?

One Kiss is a quick fun read, about the opportunities for letting go and the possibilities for meeting someone special in the rarest of places.

Bec Darden was a high-powered attorney who had spent her entire adult life building a fearsome reputation both in the courtroom and the boardroom.

But once upon a time, she was also a naïve and romantic—aka idiotic—soul who’d married her college sweetheart on a whim just before graduating. She and Luke were young and in love and—

No surprise, her marriage had been short-lived.

Explosive. Miserable. And incredibly, incredibly short-lived.

But now Luke Pearson was back in her life and with the worst possible news. Her marriage, the one she’d almost immediately regretted, and the subsequent divorce she’d paid through the teeth for by working insane hours and basically not sleeping for several years hadn’t happened.

As in she was still freaking married.

Luke had been sexy in high school, gorgeous in college, but he was even hotter as a grown man and his reappearance in her life hadn’t done anything to dampen the attraction she felt for him.

But Bec had already learned that sex wasn’t everything. One broken heart was enough, and she wasn’t in the market to give Luke another chance at shattering her all over again. He needed to sign the divorce papers she drafted and leave her to her life.

Except . . . what did they say about best laid plans?

Because Luke wouldn’t sign.
