Blog Tour – Delighted by Lexi Blake

Delighted, an all-new captivating Masters and Mercenaries novella from New York Times bestselling author Lexi Blake and 1,001 Dark Nights, is available now!

Brian “Boomer” Ward believes in sheltering strays. After all, the men and women of McKay-Taggart made him family when he had none. So when the kid next door needs help one night, he thinks nothing of protecting her until her mom gets home. But when he meets Daphne Carlton, the thoughts hit him hard. She’s stunning and hardworking and obviously in need of someone to put her first. It doesn’t hurt that she’s as sweet as the cupcakes she bakes.

Daphne Carlton’s life revolves around two things—her kid and her business. Daphne’s Delights is her dream—to take the recipes of her childhood and share them with the world. Her daughter, Lou, is the best kid she could have hoped for. Lou’s got a genius-level intelligence and a heart of gold. But she also has two grandparents who control her access to private school and the fortune her father left behind. They’re impossible to please, and Daphne worries that one wrong move on her part could cost her daughter the life she deserves.

As Daphne and Boomer find themselves getting closer, outside forces put pressure on the new couple. But if they make it through the storm, love will just be the icing on the cake because family is the real prize.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

“It was a rough day. I could use a hug, if you don’t mind,” she said, trying to hold back tears. “The oven is going to die soon, and I don’t have the money to fix it, and I’m going to fail.”
His arms came around her, and she breathed him in. He smelled clean and crisp, like a spring wind. Her brain knew it had to be soap, but she associated the smell with him, and it soothed her.
“It’s okay.” He rocked her a little. “I’ve got a friend who is good with appliances. I can ask her to look at it. Don’t worry, Daph. It’s going to be all right. Lou’s good here. I promise. Lou’s good, and you’re going to be okay. I can’t let you go under or Big Tag would get mad at me. He really likes lemon cupcakes.”
They stood there for a moment, his warmth melting some of the ice that had built up over the last several years.
She tilted her head up, and that gorgeous man was staring down at her like he could eat her up, and warm was no longer the word she would use.
Hot. Desire flooded her system like a flash fire, and she wanted nothing more than to go up on her toes and kiss those magnificent lips of his.
Those lips belonged to another woman, and that woman was in the building. What the hell was she thinking? He was a nice man. He didn’t want to kiss her. He was being kind.
She stepped back, wiping her eyes. “Thank you, Boomer. And if you do have someone who can take a look at the oven, I would so appreciate it. You get all the cupcakes. What kind does MaeBe like? Would she be okay with the hugging thing?”
He frowned, like he was trying to figure something out. “I hug Mae a lot. At least I used to. She’s not so huggy these days. She likes anything chocolate.”
Boomer had looked sad when he’d said Mae didn’t hug him much anymore. She hated the thought of this big cuddly god of a man being in a cold relationship, but she wasn’t going to be the reason they broke up.
“Then I will make her something chocolate, and the lemon ones for your boss,” Daphne promised. She had to get these crazy urges under control or she would need to find Lou another place to stay, and she got the feeling Lou would object. “So where is the lounge? Or the gulag. That one kind of scares me.”
“Kala? Oh, that proves you have excellent instincts.” Boomer turned to walk back down the hall.
Those heads were back up above their cubicle walls, and she also noticed the doors to a whole bunch of offices were open.
“Is there a reason everyone is watching us?” She hurried down the hall to catch up with him.
“Because they’re all nosy bastards, and I can’t even complain,” Boomer replied. “I was a nosy bastard, too. We’re a weird family, and everyone is always in everyone else’s business, but it’s not a bad thing. The kind of people who would take advantage get weeded out very quickly around here. Big Tag takes care of them, and there’s usually a lawsuit, but that’s what Mitch is for. Hey, we also have a criminal defense attorney on call. Her name is Lea, and she’s really scary. Now if she had been working the reception desk when we invaded, we might have had trouble.”
She loved listening to him talk. His voice was deep, but every word was tinged with the humor he seemed to have for the world around him. The positive light he exuded was always there in his words.
If only the man weren’t attached…
She shoved aside the thought because he was totally out of her league. They weren’t even playing the same game.
But maybe they could be friends.

Delighted; Masters and Mercenaries #24.5, Sanctum Nights #13
(A novella within a series)

Publication Date: June 7, 2022

Genre/Tropes: Novella/Single mom/Suspense Romance

Author: Lexi Blake

Review Rating: 5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:
Big, beautiful, kind-hearted Boomer. I’ve been looking forward to his story and I loved every moment of it, I only wish it could have been longer.

Boomer has been a secondary character for a long time and I’ve loved every time he’s shown up on the page. So of course I’ve been eagerly anticipating his own story. Boomer is one of the biggest guys on the team, but aside from his physical stature, he’s got one of the biggest hearts and sweetest personalities you will run across. He’s a bleeding heart when it comes to helping someone in need, seriously…it is impossible to not like this guy, unless you are on some starvation diet then his large appetite may offend you, but aside from that, he’s loyal, kind, and an animal lover to boot. The same question we all ask- how is this man still single- is the same one Daphne asks when she meets him, and that answer requires Boomer to receive lots of big hugs.

Daphne is a widow and a single mother to a twelve year daughter with a genius level IQ. It’s Lou that befriends Boomer first and she’s an amazing girl who fits right in with all the MT youth. It’s that feeling of when you find your tribe, you instantly click. Daphne also feels right at home with the MT women and she hasn’t had that in a long time, but falling for someone again is scary especially when she’s still dealing with her in-laws from her first marriage.

This novella is lower suspense than some of the other books within the Masters and Mercenaries series, but for readers of this series it is filled with morsels of what’s happened in the last book and what’s to come up in the next. I know I’m eager with anticipation for not only the next book, but also for the next generation. Having Lou in this book gave Lexi a chance to really flush out the youth and what their potential will be, not that we didn’t already know about some of them, like Ian’s girls, but they are really taking shape.

New Release – Treasured by Lexi Blake

Treasured, a fast paced and intriguing novella in the A Masters and Mercenaries Series from New York Times bestselling author Lexi Blake and 1,001 Dark Nights, is available now!

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Lexi Blake comes a new story in her Masters and Mercenaries series…

David Hawthorne has a great life. His job as a professor at a prestigious Dallas college is everything he hoped for. Now that his brother is back from the Navy, life seems to be settling down. All he needs to do is finish the book he’s working on and his tenure will be assured. When he gets invited to interview a reclusive expert, he knows he’s gotten lucky. But being the stepson of Sean Taggart comes with its drawbacks, including an overprotective mom who sends a security detail to keep him safe. He doesn’t need a bodyguard, but when Tessa Santiago shows up on his doorstep, the idea of her giving him close cover doesn’t seem so bad.

Tessa has always excelled at most anything she tried, except romance. The whole relationship thing just didn’t work out for her. She’s not looking for love, and she’s certainly not looking for it with an academic who happens to be connected to her boss’s family. The last thing she wants is to escort an overly pampered pretentious man-child around South America to ensure he doesn’t get into trouble. Still, there’s something about David that calls to her. In addition to watching his back, she will have to avoid falling into the trap of soulful eyes and a deep voice that gets her heart racing.

But when the seemingly simple mission turns into a treacherous race for a hidden artifact, David and Tess know this assignment could cost them far more than their jobs. If they can overcome the odds, the lost treasure might not be their most valuable reward.

Excerpt

She was sure Storm had to have a girlfriend, though he wasn’t married, as far as Jane knew. She constantly checked out his left hand for a ring. On the outside looking in, Storm North was the perfect catch, and she was…simply Jane. Plain Jane, as her ex used to call her. It was a nickname their daughter had picked up and taunted her with for most of her mean teenage years. Raising Rose by herself hadn’t been a walk in the park. At first, Jake had wanted to co-raise their daughter, but as the years went by, and he moved from one base to another, his trips to see her had become fewer and fewer. It affected Rose greatly. She’d felt abandoned, blaming her mom for the fact that her dad wasn’t around. She’d snuck out of their apartment all the time in high school and graduated by the skin of her teeth. Jane hadn’t been surprised when she’d moved out on her eighteenth birthday. There were even a few years when Jane thought she’d wake up to a knock on the door from the police, letting her know that Rose was dead of an overdose or because she’d hooked up with the wrong man. But finally, after several painful years for them both, things had at least leveled out when it came to their relationship. She was twenty-six, had a steady boyfriend—who Jane didn’t know at all—and was at least making an effort to be a little nicer. She wasn’t sure what her daughter was doing for a living, but when Rose did reach out, she was no longer begging for money. It was kind of pathetic that Jane was taking that as a good sign. In the near decade that she’d been living on her own, Jane had felt as if she’d been learning who she was as a woman. At first she’d been Jake’s girlfriend. Then his Navy wife. Then she was the woman who’d been dumped and a single mother. She’d struggled for so long and so hard that she still felt as if she was finding herself. Which was somewhat silly after half a century, but there it was. And she wanted to find love again. Find a man who would support her as much as she supported him. Wanted someone to laugh with…and do all the naughty things she’d been fantasizing about for years and years. But Storm North wasn’t that man. Jane knew it, but that didn’t mean she could stop fantasizing about him. Pushing the mail cart down the hallway, Jane felt her heart rate increase as she got closer to Storm’s office. It was silly. Ridiculous. But she felt as if she was in middle school again, about to see the boy she had a massive crush on. But Storm was no boy, that was for sure. She entered his administrative assistant’s office and smiled at the man sitting behind the desk. “Good morning,” she said cheerily. “Hi, Jane,” the young man replied with a smile. “Go on in. He’s not in a meeting.” “Thanks,” Jane told him, hoping she didn’t look as excited as she felt. She didn’t get to see Storm every day, since he was a very busy man, and whenever she did, it made her morning.

Excerpt

I had spent too long trying to dig myself out of the darkness, attempting to claw my way out of horror, and I had missed my chance at something more. My fault, I repeated to myself—all my fault.

“Kincaid?” the woman in front of me asked, her voice soft. “It’s good to finally meet you,” she said, although her voice was devoid of emotion. I didn’t know if she was lying or not.

I rolled my shoulders back. “I’m sorry for disturbing you so late. I just got into town. I’ll let you be. Sorry about this.” I turned to walk away, to let the pain ease ever so slightly even though I knew it never would, but a small hand grabbed my arm—the strength of the grip surprising me. I looked down at that diamond ring that had been put on her finger by the man I once loved. The man I still loved? I wasn’t sure.

“Come inside. Please.”

“I don’t think that would be a good idea,” I said.

Ronin didn’t say anything. And, somehow, that hurt worse than him yelling at me and throwing me out. But I would deserve it if he did. I deserved all of it.

“I’m Julia. Please, come inside. It’s late and getting a bit chilly. You don’t even have a coat on.”

“I’m fine,” I said.

“Please. You don’t want me to get mean.” Her eyes twinkled as I peered at her face.

This was the woman Ronin had married, and I liked her. She was firm, smiled, and looked like she would take no shit—the perfect partner for Ronin. She was so different from Alexis. I could already tell that, and maybe that was a good thing. She likely wouldn’t run away when things got tough.

Though I had no idea how I could tell that from a single touch, a momentary glance.

“Come on. Ronin and I were just cleaning up after dinner.”

That’s when I finally noticed the swollen lips—the tousled hair.

Oh, they had definitely been doing something after dinner, but it wasn’t cleaning up.

Jealousy slashed at me, but I pushed it away.

I deserved this, and so much more.

Finally, I looked at Ronin again, saw the longing mixed with anger in his gaze, and knew I couldn’t just leave. I would after, but I couldn’t hurt this woman, not when I knew if I walked away, I would only leave ashes in my wake for her to deal with. And neither of them deserved that.

“Okay, just for a moment.”

Review:

The best outcome in triads lately, at least for me, come down to the right mix of steamy and practicality. I love when the throuple takes their time to talk about what they are jumping into and the ramifications of it before people start getting hurt. Don’t get me wrong, I love lusty times as much as the next person, but I also appreciate the careful consideration and respect that goes into the thought process of this kind of relationship just like a couple would. The depth of the characters and meaning behind the story goes a long way towards wrapping around my heart when the author takes the time, plus, the steamy intimate moments are that much better!! So thank you Carrie Ann, Captured in Ink is the best of both worlds.

Ronin and Julia are already married when Ronin’s old flame comes back into his life. Once part of a triad before he was married Ronin knows they aren’t exactly easy and Julia is now the center of his world he doesn’t want to do anything that will screw that up. However, adding a third to their marriage is something they have been discussing and having Kincaid walk back into Ronin’s life opens more possibility to making that possibility a reality. First things first, Ronin and Kincaid have to work through their past heartache before they jump into anything that could ruin what Ronin and Julia have in their stable marriage. What could this mean for the triad if they travel down this path? Happiness or destruction?

Review/Synopsis:

Review:

This new book by Lexi Blake was perfection! Blake fans will love the circle of interconnections sprinkled throughout the story and all readers will love the intense story between JT and Nina.

JT Malone needs help to flush out a corporate spy and a snitch hidden within his own personal. Something that is above his pay grade, but luckily he happens to have the family connections and knows who to call. Simon West is his cousin so McKay-Taggart is on the case, but his cousin has also moved on to new adventures with his wife. So they send in a lovely female agent, Nina Blunt, and she is ready to take down the person who is threatening JT’s company, but he wasn’t quite ready to meet the sexy woman himself.

Nina normally works out of the London offices, but everyone seems to be on maternity/paternity leave lately. Her mission is to find the spy who wants to buy JT’s prototype and weed out the snitch within his company who wants to sell it. It should be an easy case, that is until she meets the man himself. When JT and Nina find they have strong connection from the get go, but when danger begins to move in JT doesn’t like the fact that she places herself in front of it. However, Nina holds firm that if he can’t support her in her job that he doesn’t support her period. Their overall relationship is powerful and has a wonderful dynamic.

I love these novellas. They feel like Christmas, birthday, and every holiday present all wrapped up in one. They are a gift from Lexi, a glimpse into how characters are doing, sometimes a catchup of storylines, or a look into what’s ahead. Charmed was like eating my favorite cake – I couldn’t get enough and I wanted more.

Excerpt:

She glanced at Shane. “I need to get going. My son is going to FaceTime with me soon, and I don’t want to miss the call.”

“I get it. You’re a good mom.” He smiled at her, the beauty in his expression taking her breath away.

“Thank you. I try to be.”

Because they’d ordered and brought their trays outside, she started to gather things together.

“I’ve got it,” he insisted.

“Okay … well, thank you for getting me to the right place. And for dinner.” He’d paid despite her protests.

“You’re welcome.”

A pause ensued, the first truly awkward silent moment since they’d met. She didn’t know what to say, and he seemed equally uncertain. Would he ask to see her again? Take her number? She realized they hadn’t even exchanged last names.

And she wasn’t even sure if she wanted to get involved with a man now. Although her best friend from Tampa, Layla, insisted it was time Amber tried dating again, she wasn’t ready. Consideirng she’d just moved to a new state, a new guy was the last thing she thought she needed.

And since Shane, despite the occasional intense and lingering looks her way, didn’t seem inclined to make a move, she decided to wrap things up. “Well, thanks again and it was nice meeting you.”

Feeling like a dork, she waved a hand in the air, turned, and walked away, hoping she was headed in the right direction this time. And doing her best not to turn around and look back to see if he was watching her.

Excerpt:

“Did you have any siblings?” he asked.

She shook her head. “Just me and endless aunts and uncles of the theater.”

“When did you finally get to pursue your own dream of college?”

“I left them when I was nineteen. Took my GED, applied to the local community college, and got a job working as a secretary. I taught myself to type and did the bills at home and for the current theater project they were involved in, so I had some skills. The rest was easy.”

She sipped at the wine, taking her time with the balance and flavor as she let it settle over her tongue and slip down her throat. He shifted in the chair, the heat suddenly strangling him. She was so damn sexy and had no clue. It made it so much harder not to touch her.

“How easy?” he asked.

“I got As, scored a scholarship to Cornell, then came to the city for a more interesting career.”

“Do you see your parents often?”

He wondered when she’d stop answering his questions. He was greedy for anything she’d share, but for now, she seemed open to talking. “No, but we chat on the phone, and when they came here last year for an off-off-Broadway play, they stayed with me for a week. We’re happier when we’re apart. Our personalities just never matched, but we love each other. We’re family.”

Her simple acceptance of her life humbled him. He knew she was no whiner, but it was more than that. She seemed to know who she was to the core and made no apologies—even to her parents. That type of strength and feminine confidence pulled at him. The man she took into her inner circle would be the luckiest bastard on Earth.

God, he wanted it to be him.

“Thank you for telling me,” he finally said, content to let what she gave him be enough. “I guess I realized we spend all this time together, but I knew nothing about your personal life.” Had he seemed greedy for information? Maybe it was better to ease off in case she was uncomfortable? “It’s nice to learn more about your important employees.”

She stiffened, and the wall slammed back up. “Our work relationship doesn’t warrant personal,” she said coolly. “And I don’t need to be another of your charities, Mr. Mayor. The way things have been between us has been just fine.”

He blinked, caught off guard. “Wait, what did I say wrong? And you know it pisses me off when you don’t use my name.”

About MORE THAN PLEASURE YOU:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Shayla Black comes a new story in her More Than Words series…

Can I convince her our hot but temporary engagement should last forever?

I’m Stephen Lund, confirmed bachelor…and son of a successful billionaire whose sins I can’t forget—or forgive. Though he insisted I get over his transgressions, I can’t. So I put space between us with a temporary getaway to Maui. My rental’s sexy caretaker, Skye Ingram, is a beautiful distraction. Yeah, it’s a terrible time to start a fling, but I can’t help wanting to give her every bit of pleasure she’s willing to take.

When Skye needs a date to her ex-boyfriend’s wedding, I’m game to play her pretend fiancé. The jerk should see what he passed up…and that I’m holding her now. But our pretend engagement begins to feel real. Our passion certainly is. So are the consequences. When I’m confronted with the reality that our lives are now irrevocably entwined, I have to choose between leaving Skye to return to the life—and wealth—I’ve always known or abandoning everything familiar to start over with the woman who awakened my heart.

Excerpt:

“So you think having a fiancé will finally convince your ex’s mother to back off?”

“I hope. In her head, I’m all alone, and Finn is only marrying Dana because he’s a stubborn dumb ass. But if she sees I’ve moved on, too, I have to think she’ll give up.”

“Tell me one thing that will really convince her you’re no longer interested in Finn.”

Skye pauses. “I haven’t thought about it like that… Probably behaving unlike the way I did with Finn.”

“What do you mean?”

“She was always encouraging us to kiss and hold hands. She would give us romantic weekends away. Once, when I made an offhanded mention that my period was late, she asked me—gleefully—if there was any chance I was pregnant. I didn’t have the heart to tell her no.”

No chance at all? “Not to be too personal, but did you ever have sex with Finn?”

“No. Maybe he might have tried harder if I had been more receptive. But mostly I think we both felt pushed into the relationship.”

“So you and I have to act like we can’t keep our hands off each other?”

“Probably.” She winces. “Yeah. Sorry.”

“It’s not a problem.” At all. I reach for her hand—and frown when Skye jolts. “But if we’re going to convince anyone, especially people who have known you for years, that we’re getting married because we’re desperately in love, you can’t jump when I touch you. We have to leave them thinking that we barely managed to roll out of bed for the wedding and that we’ll probably roll right back in as soon as we’re alone.”

“You’re right. It’s just, um…been a while since anyone kissed me. I don’t count Finn.”

“How long?”

She pauses. “Two years and some change.”

Whoa. Skye deserves to be kissed well and often by someone desperate to make love to that pillowy pink mouth with abandon. Hell, yeah, I’ll volunteer. And if it’s been that long since anyone has kissed her, how long since someone has taken her to bed and pleasured her? I don’t ask—but I’m really fucking curious. “I did not see that coming.”

“Embarrassing, right?”

I shake my head. “No.”

“You’re being nice.” She slides off the stool and onto her feet, shaking slightly. “So you think we should wing the whole PDA thing…or maybe practice a little?”

“Definitely practice.” I can’t help but grin. “A lot.”

Skye bites her soft lip. “You’re probably right.”

I am. And that makes her very nervous.

“No maybe about it.” I flash what I hope is a reassuring smile, not one that divulges the fact that I woke up with an aching cock and her on my mind.

“Okay, how should we—”

I stop her awkward, breathless question by kicking away from my stool. The legs drag across the tile as I stand. That’s the only sound in the room besides the distant crash of surf and her suddenly rapid breathing.

“Come here.” I crook my finger.

About ENCHANTED:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Lexi Blake comes a new story in her Masters and Mercenaries series…

A snarky submissive princess

Sarah Stevens’s life is pretty sweet. By day, she’s a dedicated trauma nurse and by night, a fun-loving club sub. She adores her job, has a group of friends who have her back, and is a member of the hottest club in Dallas. So why does it all feel hollow? Could it be because she fell for her dream man and can’t forgive him for walking away from her? Nope. She’s not going there again. No matter how much she wants to.

A prince of the silver screen

Jared Johns might be one of the most popular actors in Hollywood, but he lost more than a fan when he walked away from Sarah. He lost the only woman he’s ever loved. He’s been trying to get her back, but she won’t return his calls. A trip to Dallas to visit his brother might be exactly what he needs to jump-start his quest to claim the woman who holds his heart.

A masquerade to remember

For Charlotte Taggart’s birthday, Sanctum becomes a fantasyland of kinky fun and games. Every unattached sub gets a new Dom for the festivities. The twist? The Doms must conceal their identities until the stroke of midnight at the end of the party. It’s exactly what Sarah needs to forget the fact that Jared is pursuing her. She can’t give in to him, and the mysterious Master D is making her rethink her position when it comes to signing a contract. Jared knows he was born to play this role, dashing suitor by day and dirty Dom at night.

When the masks come off, will she be able to forgive the man who loves her, or will she leave him forever?

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

Read Kay’s Review: Enchanted

Excerpt:

Charlotte Taggart felt the baby fluttering in her belly and a deep sense of peace filled her. She genuinely enjoyed being pregnant. It wasn’t for everyone. Her sister hated it, and Simon was going to have to be happy with the only kiddo he would ever share with Chelsea. Her friend Kori had vowed to never be pregnant, and it worked for her and Kai. They had a whole lot of dogs and it filled the need for them. The truth was there was no one way to have a family.

But damn she loved hers—all of them. She loved the ones she shared blood with and the ones she’d chosen. She was blessed beyond measure.

It made her feel the need to give back.

Soft baby snuffles came from the monitor, letting her know her son was still sleeping. She’d given up keeping a monitor in the twins’ room since they’d gotten big enough to simply come and ask for what they needed. Too many times she overheard plans for world domination and it kept her up at night.

The son in her stomach twisted again, but it wasn’t anywhere close to uncomfortable yet. That was still months away. For now, his kicks felt like waves across her belly.

Soft light illuminated the kitchen and she couldn’t help but think about how far she’d come from the child she’d been. Moscow didn’t have many sunny days, but here in Dallas the light seemed to always be around her.

Light and love and laughter.

“He giving you hell, baby?” The question rumbled against the nape of her neck and she was pulled back against the hard planes of her husband’s body. He’d gone to bed wearing nothing at all, but she knew he would have slid his strong legs into pajama bottoms or sweat pants before he’d left the room. His chest, however, was still warm and bare. “You’re up early. Or were you trying to sneak in some quiet time before the monsters awaken?”

Nothing ever felt as good as that moment when Ian took her in his arms. And he was right. She loved her three kiddos. Kenzie and Kala and Seth. Soon there would be four, and she wasn’t so foolish as to believe her baby girls wouldn’t immediately start training their youngest brother in how to take on the parents. But that wasn’t what had gotten her out of bed. “I was plotting.”

She could feel him smile against her shoulder, where he was currently laying soft kisses and getting her hot and bothered. He pushed her hair to the side to give himself better access.

“I love it when you plot. Is this a bloody, take-no-prisoners plot where I get to murder people? Because it’s been a long time.”

Enchanted; A Masters and Mercenaries Novella #18.5 (Series)
by Lexi Blake (Author)

This review is from: June 14, 2019 By Kay Daniels
Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Heat Level:🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Back in the Masters and Mercenaries world, and while this was just a novella, it was filled with everything I LOVE!!! Lexi Blake is a master and Enchanted was absolutely perfect!

A second chance love story, one that actually began a few books ago. Set in the Masters and Mercenaries world, Ian Taggart’s world (my favorite among favorites world) Jared Johns/Ferguson and Sarah Stevens finally get their chance at love.

When Charlotte Taggart throws a birthday party, Sanctum is transformed in a sultain’s paradise. Each unattached Dom and submissive will have a weekend to celebrate in a way that only the Taggart’s and Sanctum could come up with all in anonymity of course.  Jared knows this is the perfect chance to win back Sarah so with the help of the Sanctum family he sets his plans in motion.

Enchanted may be a novella, but it is filled with everything you could want in a Lexi Blake novel;

  • Ian, Ian, and more Ianisms. His snark and wisdom is the absolute best. “My youngest brother is very much into manovers. First he talks to whatever sad-sack dude he’s managed to attract, and before you know it they’re crying and eating mint chocolate chip ice cream and talking about how they can be complete without a woman, and then what? Five minutes later they’re trying on clothes.”
  • There are old M&M favorites along with new characters that pop in, plus…mixed in…characters from Bliss, CO. SQUEEEEE!!!! Having the crossover connection always makes me super happy, so call me blissfully happy.
  • The babies or more like children of M&M are growing up. We are at 18.5 in the series, where has the time gone? Ian and Charlotte may be busy amassing their own army, but the other members of Sanctum are helping as well. Sarah has been working in the nursery almost since the beginning and her inner monologue talking about the children is priceless.
  • Sanctum is an amazing space; a refuge, a safe space, an adult playground and Lexi is a master at keeping it fresh, fun, and the sexy times hot and steamy.

Catch up with everything Masters and Mercenaries in this amazing novella.

Excerpt:

Sierra woke up as the car turned off, the motor coming to a stop. She shook her head and looked around at the unfamiliar surroundings. Trees were visible outside the windows, and a glittering sign said Paradise Cove, and beneath it, A Couples Only Poconos Resort.

“You have got to be kidding me!” She glanced at Ryder in disbelief. “What the hell are we doing in the Poconos?” She’d obviously fallen asleep for a good two hours, the shock of the day along with the glass of champagne she’d had prior to the non-wedding catching up with her.

He treated her to his most charming grin. “You always said you wanted to honeymoon here. That it was romantic.”

“I was seventeen!” she yelled at him. “I didn’t know any better. And we aren’t on our honeymoon.” She glanced down at her white wedding gown, not missing the irony of the situation but in no mood to find it funny.

She and Jason were supposed to be on their way to St. Lucia tomorrow morning. Instead she was in the honeymoon capital of Pennsylvania. Her stomach cramped at the reminder of all she’d left behind earlier today. Although she’d texted Sebastian from Ryder’s phone, she hoped her brothers weren’t too worried about her. She’d left her own phone in the bridal room and couldn’t know whether Jason had tried to reach her or not. But her brothers knew she was with Ryder, and if Jason wanted her, he certainly could contact them and find out how to talk to her.

Instead she was in the Poconos with her ex.She looked at the man who’d driven her over one hundred miles from home and waited for an explanation.

He placed an arm behind her seat, turning to face her. “By the time I realized how far I’d driven, we were half an hour from here. I couldn’t think of anywhere else to crash. And I wasn’t about to turn around and drive another two hours home.”

She frowned at him. “So now what? You expect me to stay here with you?”

“Would it really be so bad?” he asked, his voice gentling. “I understand you’re angry with me, but we’re here. It’s late. Let’s just go inside and see if we can get a room.”

The very idea of it was crazy. Nothing good could come of her being alone with Ryder now, and she really shouldn’t have left with him. But it was too late to take her actions back now.

She blew out a resigned breath. “Fine. But I hope they have a gift shop,” she muttered, needing a change of clothes because nothing about this trip had been thought through.

She climbed out of the car and Ryder helped her gather the train and fold it up so she could hold it over one arm. Then together, they walked into the main area of the resort and headed to the reception desk.

“I assume you have a reservation?” the woman behind the counter asked, her gaze traveling over Ryder in his suit, Sierra in her white gown.

“Umm, no. But we’d like a room for a couple of days,” Ryder said with a smile.

“One night,” Sierra countered.

He frowned at her and the girl behind the desk looked confused. She typed something into the computer and glanced up at them. “Our honeymoon suite is booked and we only have suites, not rooms, but I’m sure you’ll love what’s available. All of our suites have round king-size beds beneath celestial ceilings, log-burning fireplaces, and heart-shaped tubs or champagne-glass-shaped whirlpool spas.”

Sierra felt her mouth drop open at the description. It was everything she’d seen in commercials as a young, love-struck girl dreaming of romance.

“I don’t think–”

“We’ll take one,” he said, cutting her off.

The clerk looked back and forth between them, a definite furrow between her eyebrows. “We can only offer you two nights. I’m sorry but we’re booked after that.”

Before she could utter another word, Ryder slid his credit card across the counter. “We’ll stay both nights. And the airline lost our luggage, so do you think you could hook us up with the basics?” he asked.

She was grateful he was thinking of everything, even if she was still annoyed with him. Besides, she was beyond uncomfortable in the wedding gown, and Sierra hoped the woman could help them.

The clerk’s gaze softened at the mention of missing suitcases. “That’s awful and frustrating. I’ll send up toiletries and amenities,” the woman said. “There are bathrobes in the rooms, and the gift shop and stores open tomorrow morning. You’ll be able to pick up more things to wear then.”

“Thank you,” Sierra said, appreciating the woman’s kindness.

“We’re grateful for anything you can do,” Ryder said.

He slipped a tip across the counter and the clerk glanced down and grinned at him. “Thank you. I’ll call housekeeping right now. In the meantime, here are your key cards. Breakfast and dinner are included. A continental breakfast is served in the room tomorrow. I’ll even throw in some parts of our honeymoon package,” she whispered to Ryder, making Sierra wonder how much money he’d given her.

No matter the amount, she had no intention of making use of their specialty package, she thought, exhaustion seeping into her bones despite her long nap. The day had been overwhelming and was definitely catching up with her.

She unwittingly sagged against him, and his arm immediately came out, wrapping around her, holding her for the first time in forever. It took all her willpower not to lean her head against him and let him take over.

“Come on, sweetheart. You look dead on your feet,” Ryder said, and taking her by surprise, he swept her into his arms.

Just like a real bride.

Take the Bride: A Knight Brothers Novella; The Knight Brothers #1.5 (Series)
by Carly Phillips (Author)

This review is from: May 21, 2019 By Kay Daniels
Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Heat Level:🔥🔥🔥🔥

This was my first Knight Brothers book and not only did it introduce me to their world, which I’m completely excited to read more of, but it reminded me just how good Carly Phillips’ writing is.

Ryder Hammond didn’t attend Sierra Knight’s wedding with the intention to object. He actually came to say goodbye to the memories they had once shared. Ryder and Sierra were each other’s first loves and as much as it pained him, she would most likely be his only. Yes, he broke her heart years ago, but with the good intention of letting her live out her dreams. However, when the priest asked the ill-fated question, Ryder found himself standing up and answering, “I do.”

Sierra was ready to pledge herself to another man. A good, stable, perhaps not quite passionate man, but still a good man on her wedding day. It took only one moment to change all that. Then she found herself  driving off not with her fiancé-husband, but with her ex to destinations unknown. How did her life get so messed up? A weekend originally planned to spend with her husband turns into a weekend spent with her ex. Can two former lovers turn their lives into something more? Can past hurts be put to rest to actually make a future together?

When the weekend comes to an end and Ryder and Sierra have to come out of the bubble they have been living in, no matter what, reality awaits and consequences have to be met. Ryder and Sierra have decisions to make which may not involve each other beyond their bubble.

What I loved about Take The Bride is that neither Ryder nor Sierra planned anything maliciously. Neither jumped into anything without thought or consideration for others feelings. Yes, this novella is all kinds of steamy, but it is also filled with thought and emotion. For my introduction into the Knight world it deserves an A+.

After years of estrangement, Mercedes Laughlin has finally reconciled with her older brother. Add in Truck’s boss, Colonel Colton Robinson, an amazingly distracting man whom she met under embarrassing circumstances, and Macie’s got a bit more on her plate than she can handle.

From the moment they met, Colt was fascinated by Macie, and helping her through an anxiety attack at her brother’s wedding didn’t diminish the appeal. He’d do his best to sweep her off her feet, if not for a little voice telling him to tread lightly—until a frantic phone call changes the plan. Macie’s being targeted, and Colt’s determined to keep her safe while he and her brother eliminate the threat.

Colt isn’t about to let his friend lose his sister again so soon…or miss his own chance at a happy ending with Macie before they’ve barely had a beginning.

EXCERPT:

He sat Macie gently on the counter in her bathroom. He leaned close and placed his hands on the cool tiles next to her hips and waited for her to open her eyes. It took several moments, but when she finally brought her beautiful brown eyes up to his, he wasn’t prepared for the jolt of electricity he felt.

Bringing one hand to her cheek, he was encouraged when she tilted her head and rested it on his palm. “You okay?” he asked softly.

She nodded and said, “No.”

He smiled at the contradiction. But he had a feeling she was being completely honest. “Where is your first-aid stuff?”

She lifted her head and gestured to a cabinet behind him.

Colt got to work getting the Band-Aids and hydrogen peroxide ready. When he turned around again, he had to take a deep breath. He’d purposely kept his mind off the fact that she was wearing only a tank top and a pair of short-shorts. But she’d dropped the blanket, and he couldn’t stop his eyes from tracking from her feet up her long legs to her curvy thighs. Her belly wasn’t flat, but she wasn’t overweight either. And her tits were lush and full. Even as he stared at her, he saw her nipples tighten under the cotton.

He finally looked up and saw she was examining him just as openly. Waiting until her gaze had traveled the length of his body, he finally said, “Let’s get you cleaned up so we can get out of here.”

She blushed when she looked up at him, but nodded.

Turning his thoughts away from how sexy he found her—but loving that she seemed to be just as interested in checking him out as he was her—Colt concentrated on cleaning the scrapes on her body. He put the bottle down on the counter and picked up one of her hands. The palm was scraped and red, and he hated knowing it was because she’d leapt out her fucking window into a tree. He hated every single bruise and mark on her smooth skin. Throughout his ministrations, she didn’t cry and didn’t make a sound. He knew he had to be hurting her, but she was stoic and calm as he tended to her wounds.

When he was finally satisfied that he’d cleaned the worst of her scratches, he helped her stand and wrapped the blanket back around her shoulders. “You need help packing?”

She considered his offer for a second, then shook her head. “How long will I be staying with you?”

Forever was on the tip of his tongue, but he held back the word, knowing it would stress her out…and that it was crazy.

EXCERPT:

Macie had no idea what Colt was doing with her brother at two-thirty in the morning, but she couldn’t deny that she was extremely grateful. She didn’t even flinch when Colt called her brother Truck. He’d apparently been given the nickname when he’d joined the Army. She was trying to remember to call him that, but because he’d been Ford to her as long as she could remember, it was tough.

And as much as she knew her brother would’ve helped her, hearing Colt’s steady voice kept her grounded. She remembered after Truck’s wedding, when she’d been having an anxiety attack, he’d held her against him and talked to her in his low, rumbly voice. How much it had helped. He’d calmed her and helped pull her out of the dark place her mind had gone.

The same was happening tonight. She’d been panicking and running headlong through the parking lot, with no idea what to do or where to go, when he’d forced her to pay attention to her surroundings. He gave her something to concentrate on, and it felt good to let him take over and tell her what to do.

She had no idea why he hadn’t called her after her brother’s wedding. He’d asked her out and she’d badly wanted to spend more time with him, but he hadn’t called. Hadn’t gotten in touch with her. His rejection had hurt, but she really wasn’t surprised. She was a pain in the ass and no one as amazing as Colt would want to be with her.

At the moment, however, she had more pressing issues to think about. Looking back toward the building, Macie didn’t see any sign of the men who’d broken into her apartment, but she could hear their footsteps. Macie ducked behind a car and dropped to her knees.

She winced but ignored the pain and crawled between a row of cars, making sure to stay out of sight. Then she lay down on her belly and crawled under one of the cars in the lot. She was wearing a tight tank top and her sleep shorts, because she hated to feel constricted by clothing when she slept.

“Macie?” Colt asked.

She opened her mouth to respond when she heard one of the men saying to his friend, “She has to be this way. We’ve checked all the other cars.”

It felt like she was having a heart attack. Her chest was tight and she couldn’t get enough air into her lungs. But she couldn’t gasp for oxygen because they’d hear her.

Macie mentally berated herself for calling her brother and not the police. If she’d called 9-1-1, they’d probably be here by now.

Review – Rescuing Macie by Susan Stoker

Rescuing Macie; Delta Force Heroes #9.5 (Series)
by Susan Stoker (Author)

This review is from: April  12, 2019 By Kay Daniels (Kindle Edition-Goodreads)
Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Heat Level:🔥🔥🔥

I love the 1001 Dark Night novellas because they are typically a quick read. Most of the books I’ve read under this umbrella are stories that the author wants to tell, but the characters are either in an ongoing series and don’t quite have enough meat to make up a full novel, or it’s a great way for the author to introduce a new character that has a chance in a new series without having to begin a full novel all on their own.

Rescuing Macie is the perfect example of both options above. Macie and Colt are both characters who straddle two storylines and Rescuing Macie makes this a perfect place to bring two very likeable characters and two worlds into focus.

Rescuing Macie touches base with the old Delta Force world which includes Ghost, Truck, Beatle, and the rest of the force, but it also introduces us to another Delta Force currently under Colt’s command. A force of soldiers that are younger and all currently single. This is exciting news. This means a whole new set of men who have their own stories and we get to be a part of that adventure.

What’s also exciting is Macie is Truck’s sister. This means we won’t lose touch with the old Delta Force because; #1 she’s related to them and #2 Colt is the commanding officer over both units. So, if you love Stoker’s Delta Force world and are invested in them, this is a book you don’t want to miss.

Rescuing Macie may be a novella, but it is full of so much. Even though you may have met Macie and Colt in previous books, you get a deeper understanding to what makes Colt tick. This was an emotional moment between Macie and Colt and once again you understand the magic of how Stoker writes the perfect pairing for every book. Also Stoker has a way that makes you understand impairments or setbacks, like Macie’s anxiety, so you are compassionate about whatever someone is dealing with, she has an amazing gift.

I’m looking forward to read more about the future of the Delta’s.

Read the first chapter of ASHES TO INK:

Abby loved tea. She loved everything about it. The taste, the smell, the way it warmed her up on a cold day or cooled her down on a warm one. She’d even loved tea when she was a little girl, playing with air in her teacups and treating her stuffed animals and Cabbage Patch dolls to an afternoon tea party.

Her grandmother had taught her the basics of brewing the perfect cuppa, as well as the ratio of sugar cubes needed. Abby had then learned to try tea with all additives: cinnamon sticks, lemon wedges, a dash of cream. Some might consider that ruining it, but Abby had wanted to try it all.

She loved tea bags but adored loose-leaf tea even more. She relished steeping it, blending it, and finding the perfect mix for the season.

So when she found herself looking for a way to create something that was just hers and start over after everything had fallen apart around her, opening the tea shop had seemed like a no-brainer.

Teas’d specialized in loose-leaf tea, but Abby also sold some bagged tea and different teapots and helpful equipment.

It was Abby’s goal in life to make it so others could discover the joys of tea like she had, and maybe find a new favorite along the way. She had always loved the idea of teatime, even if she didn’t have the time to truly sit down and enjoy it herself every day.

Regardless, she adored the scents, loved the idea of falling into a cup—a different flavor every day. With the resurgence of tea drinkers, it was easier for Abby to find fellow tea lovers as time moved on. There were big chain tea shops and smaller ones as well, but Teas’d was just for her. She was a tiny little speck in the idea of tea and how it could serve the needs of the people, but she was the best speck she could possibly be.

She’d had to be after everything changed.

She’d had to be when she lost everything.

Well, not everything. She still had her little girl. Abby grinned down at her phone and swiped up so she could look at the photo on the home screen.

Julia was growing every day and even looked slightly different now than she had in the picture. Abby still couldn’t quite believe that she and Max had made this beautiful baby girl. Max might not be around to help raise Julia, but he had been there for the conception and had been there to pick out everything the two of them as new parents would need to raise their child together.

It didn’t hurt as much as it once had to think about Max. Oh, it would always hurt, but at least it didn’t make Abby want to throw up and grieve right then.

She could think about her husband and smile now. She could think about the fact that he had loved her with all of his heart, even if that had been the thing to take him away from her in the end.

And she couldn’t say her feelings didn’t matter now though, because that would be a disgrace to his memory and the fact that she could see Max in her little girl every single day.

Julia would never know her father, but Abby was doing her best to make sure that Julia knew exactly who Max was, and how excited he had been to have Julia in his life.

The two had never met, but Abby knew Max was always watching over them.

There was no other way to think about it. Not when Abby needed to get up every day and breathe—try to be the mom and woman she needed to be.

But today was a new day, just like all the others. Today, she would make some tea, sell some tea, and maybe even have a cookie or two. Because it was Friday, and she was allowed to have a cookie if she wanted.

She just might have a little extra padding on her hips, but that was fine with her. It wasn’t like she was trying to entice a man.

Oh, she’d dated a couple of times in the past year or so, but it hadn’t really amounted to much. She hadn’t been ready, and she didn’t know if she was ready now either.

“What are you looking at over there?”

Abby looked up at the sound of her friend Adrienne’s voice and smiled. Adrienne Montgomery owned the tattoo shop, Montgomery Ink Too, next door and was part of a huge family—way bigger than just the set of cousins that lived near Abby.

The Montgomerys were large, loud, brash, and the sweetest people Abby had ever known. They had taken her in with just one look, much like their cousins in Denver had, and Abby loved every single one of them.

“Just looking at tea,” Abby answered, holding up a couple of tins. “I’m trying to see what I need to put on special. We have good stock of most things, but not all.”

“I don’t know how you do it. I mean, I know how to run a business, and I think I’m doing pretty well, but it takes the advice of two accountants for me to know what I’m doing.”

“Since I have the same two accountants you do, I totally understand.”

Shea was Adrienne’s sister-in-law, and Roxie was Adrienne’s sister. Both were accountants, and pretty much helped run the businesses on this stretch.

The Montgomerys owned two of the businesses—Montgomery Ink Too, and Colorado Icing. While Adrienne and Shep ran the tattoo shop, the Montgomerys’ middle sister, Thea, owned the bakery at the end of the strip.

Abby had a feeling that if there had been more space available, the accountants of the family probably would have moved in as well. Or maybe even the mechanic, Carter, who was married to Roxie. In fact, Adrienne was dating one of the tattoo artists, Mace, and that just meant there was more family than ever. More Montgomerys.

Abby didn’t think that Thea’s boyfriend, Dimitri, would be able to move a whole high school into the strip, but if there were a way, the Montgomerys would likely make it happen.

“Your family really is pretty amazing.” Abby grinned as Adrienne rolled her eyes.

“Oh, don’t tell the guys that. I mean, you can tell me, Thea, and Roxie. It’s true, and it’s sort of what we do. We are the touchstone for the Montgomerys.”

They both laughed at that because even though it might be true, every single one of the Montgomerys had their own touchstones when it came to what those around them needed.

“So, have any good tea for me today?” Adrienne asked. “I have a long project coming up, one that’s gonna take me a few hours and a few sessions. I could use all the energy I can get. And while I love coffee from Thea’s bakery, I think I’m in the mood for tea today. Something to keep me wired, but something flavorful as well. I can head over to Thea’s later for something sugary, or even a sandwich for some protein, but here is where I want my tea.”

“Well, you’ve come to the right place. Let me set you up with some chai. I know that’s your favorite.” Abby went around the counter and began working. She knew the exact blend her friend favored and even had the milk Adrienne so dearly loved to put in it. She’d make a latte if she could, but she only did that when she visited Thea’s bakery. Here at Teas’d, it was all about the blends and steeping.

“That and some of that peppermint one for later. It is the holidays. You have some peppermint, too, right?” Adrienne bounced from foot to foot as if she’d already had her caffeine for the day. Knowing Adrienne, she probably had but wanted more. Abby was happy to oblige.

“Oh, I have the peppermint. I also have that white chocolate peppermint bark one that you love.” Both of them smiled, and Abby watched as Adrienne rubbed her stomach with her hand, her eyes comically wide.

“I might have to come back for that later.”

“I can always stop by with some tea. That is what I’m here for.”

“You’re going to be a delivery person for tea as well?”

“I can. Only for my friends.”

Abby didn’t actually serve brewed tea all that often. Most people came to Teas’d for stock rather than just a cuppa. But she did have a couple of places to sit outside, as well as one inside. It was winter in Colorado Springs, so sitting outside wasn’t something that people did often.

But Abby knew some did like to sit outside the bakery at the other end of the strip, drinking their hot cocoa or coffee and braving the cold just because they were Coloradans, and that’s what they did.

And while it didn’t happen often, she loved when people came in for a cup to go, or even stayed to drink out of her ceramic mugs. She had painstakingly searched forever for the cups that she wanted and had ended up just going to Jake Gallagher to have them made.

Jake was an artist. He sculpted with his hands and with his heart. He’d made the mugs for her, as well as other things she could sell in the store.

She knew that he made art. Real art. And though she thought of her teashop as its own kind of art—the way it made others feel was art itself—she knew Jake was in a realm of his own.

With any other person, he might not have tried to help her as he did, but they had a good relationship now, and she liked that their working relationship meant that she could sell his wares and still use everything that he made for her and her customers.

The Gallaghers were connected to the Montgomerys through marriage, and Abby was tied to the Gallaghers through Max since Jake’s brother Murphy had been one of Max’s best friends.

It was odd how everything seemed to tie together and be so close—yet so far away.

She might have felt that she was on the outside looking in once, but that wasn’t the case anymore. The Montgomerys and the Gallaghers wouldn’t allow that.

And while both families had given her space to breathe, they hadn’t given her enough room to bury herself. No, she wasn’t thinking physically, she would never do that. Never to herself, never to Julia, and never to Max’s memory.

But she had needed some time to figure out how to be a single mom in this world. A mom without a real job and with only a savings account for a dream that she’d never thought to have realized in the timeframe she was forced to work in.

“That smells delicious,” Adrienne said. “Seriously delicious.”

Abby smiled, knowing today would be a good day, because it had to be. There was no other option when it came to tea.

“Here’s the chai, just for you. I put it in a to-go cup, but if you want it out of a mug later, just let me know. I don’t know how you and your elbows are doing today.”

Adrienne rolled her eyes. “That was Ryan’s fault, not mine. He startled me, and my elbow broke that mug. I paid for it. I went right up to Denver to ask Jake for another one. I am still so sorry about that.”

Abby just smiled and shook her head, handing over the tea. “I know it wasn’t your fault. I was just teasing. Though I do have to watch out for all of you over at the shop. You are a wild bunch.”

Adrienne threw her head back and laughed. “That we are. Although, I do have to say, Ryan might be the wildest of us all.” Adrienne winked.

Abby frowned at that but didn’t say anything. Was Adrienne trying to match up two of her single friends? She wasn’t sure if she was ready for anything like that. Or if she could think about Ryan like that at all.

He was handsome, that was for sure. And he always had a soft smile for Abby and was really great with Julia whenever they ran into each other. But that wasn’t often since Julia was usually with the sitter when Abby was working. Or maybe Abby was just reading into what Adrienne had said because she’d had a little too much caffeine that morning. It was time to switch to herbal tea for the rest of the day if this was how she was going to start thinking.

“You better hurry if you’re going to make your appointment. I’ll be over later with any tea you need. Just call if you want something different than the peppermint. Or if Mace or any of the others need anything.”

Adrienne leaned over and hugged Abby hard before taking her chai. “That I can do. It’s just me, Mace, and Ryan over there. It’s Shep’s day off to hang out with the kiddos.”

“I’m glad that you guys are able to work it out with all the kids. Daisy is with Shep as well?”

“Yes. Since we’re able to make our schedules work, we don’t have to get an outside sitter as much.” Adrienne paused. “You know, Julia’s always welcome to come over. I know that you would trade off with us if you could. You don’t have to pay for a sitter. We Montgomerys make it work, and you are an honorary Montgomery, after all.” Abby didn’t shake her head or say no. She knew the others were just trying to help, but it was sometimes hard to willingly accept help when she wanted to stand on her own two feet. Plus, Abby didn’t want to have to rely on anyone. Everything could change in an instant.

She shook off that thought and tried not to think about what it meant. She knew she was thinking about Max and the fact that she hadn’t really spoken to his family since the funeral. They hadn’t even met their granddaughter. Hadn’t been involved in anything having to do with Julia’s life. But that was okay. Abby would be okay. She had to be okay.

“I will talk to you later. And bring the tea.” Adrienne just rolled her eyes. Probably because Abby hadn’t commented about the daycare, but it didn’t matter.

The Montgomerys would just bring it up again, and Abby would cave—because she would. Julia loved hanging out with Daisy and Livvy. And since Julia and Livvy were close to the same age, it worked out well. Soon, there would probably be more babies in the Montgomery world. They might not have room for Julia.

Abby shook that thought out of her head as Adrienne walked out of the store. And then she went back to work. There were more teas to make, more blends to perfect. And peppermint tea and chocolate to give to her friends later.

The day went on like normal. People came in for tea, and more than one for gift baskets and Christmas presents. The holidays were quickly approaching. So fast that Abby was sure she was behind on her shopping. She tried to get some things for the Montgomerys, but most everything was for Julia. She didn’t want her daughter to assume there would always be gifts, something material. But she also wanted to spoil her baby just enough.

Julia deserved to be spoiled.

When Abby went to bring over peppermint tea for both Mace and Adrienne, Ryan was out on a personal call. She hadn’t asked why, and she didn’t want to explore why her brain immediately went to her wanting to know more about the man.

She shouldn’t want to know more about him. He was a friend. Nothing more. And that meant she shouldn’t be thinking about how he looked in his jeans every day. Or how much she liked the beautiful ink on his arms.

Nope, she wouldn’t be thinking about any of that, thank you very much.

As the day wore on, the snow started to fall a little faster, a little harder. It had even begun to accumulate, which annoyed her since the forecast hadn’t predicted it. Then again, the meteorologists were rarely right these days.

Abby wasn’t really looking forward to driving in the snow, but she was a native Coloradan, and she was used to it. There was no use complaining about the precipitation in Colorado. That was like complaining that there were mountains or high altitude.

Weather like this was just something one got used to. The snow would probably melt the next day anyway. Even if the sun shone and it was frigid outside, the precipitation did its own thing here in Colorado.

As she made her way to the babysitter’s house to pick up Julia, Abby knew that she would eventually have to ask the Montgomerys for help. She didn’t like how long it took to get to the sitter’s. If Julia stayed with one of the Montgomerys, she would actually be closer to Abby throughout the day, and Abby would have an easier and shorter drive home. It just made sense, and it would help out more people if she were there to add to the days when someone could watch all of the children.

She knew she just had to give up control and say yes.

But as the snow started to come down a little more earnestly, Abby was afraid she might have a bit of a hard time getting to her daughter tonight. And when she finally got there, it might be even more difficult to get them home. Her windshield wipers flew back and forth, the speed increasing, but so did the quickness of the snowfall.

She cursed herself once again for saying no to the Montgomerys.

When she finally arrived, Julia was hyper but not too much since Abby knew the babysitter didn’t give her extra sugar. This was just Julia’s happy, bubbly way. Her daughter was an amazing baby girl—though she wasn’t really a baby anymore, was she?

Julia was perfect in every way. No, Abby wouldn’t tell her that she was perfect over and over again because that would probably lead to issues down the road. But in Abby’s mind, her daughter was perfect.

She had gone through so much in her short life, even before she was born.

She was a survivor. Just like Abby.

Her daughter spread joy to everyone, even if she was a little shy at times. But she was so graceful, so grateful. She shared her toys with others, and always had a smile for those who might not want to. If another kid was crying or just needed a hug, Julia was right there. Sometimes even faster than the adults in the room.

In the car, Julia babbled on about her day, using strings of words that wouldn’t really make any sense to anyone but Abby. Because that was the role of the mother, to always understand what her baby girl was saying, even if it didn’t make a lick of sense.

Darkness started to fall across Colorado. The fact that it was December meant that there weren’t many hours of sunlight these days. The snow fell harder, the wind getting a little bit brisker. Abby just wanted to get home. She just wanted to be home.

She was just turning onto the next street in her route, knowing she was close to home but not close enough, when her tires slid on the ice that she hadn’t seen.

She tried not to panic, tried to remember what she was supposed to do in this situation. She didn’t twist her wheel hard, but she did try to turn into the skid. It was no use.

She was sliding into the other lane of traffic, and though there were no cars right now, that didn’t mean there wouldn’t be some soon. Julia didn’t make a sound, Abby wasn’t even sure she knew that something bad was happening.

Inside her head, Abby was screaming, her hands tight on the wheel—so tight, she was afraid she’d lose circulation.

But she couldn’t focus on any of that. She just had to concentrate on making sure they survived the skid. She had to make sure that whatever they hit, they didn’t hit too hard.

The sound of her tires sliding across the ice seemed loud in the vacuum of her panic.

It shouldn’t have sounded loud. But the rubber did squeal, and Julia let out a sound in response that made Abby want to turn. But she couldn’t. She had to keep her eyes on the road. The decision to do that, to not look at her baby girl when her daughter might need her, broke her. But she had to focus on what was in front of her.

The car hit the snowbank on the other side of the street with a dull thud, not even jostling the vehicle as it did, and Abby just sat there for a moment, her heartbeat so loud in her ears she couldn’t hear anything else.

Everything had moved so slowly—and still did, as if she hadn’t just been in a minor accident.

No other cars were coming, and there was no one else on the road. She always took this route because there was less traffic and fewer idiots out and about.

But it was cold, and there was nobody around to help. Her car was still running, but she was halfway in a ditch and slammed into a snowbank. Her body didn’t hurt, but her head did. Only because of the headache, not anything else.

But Julia.

Oh my God. Julia.

Abby undid her seatbelt, trying to ignore the fact that she just might pass out from the stress, and tuning out the cheery Christmas music filling her car. This seemed like the worst time for Christmas music, but then again, she didn’t know when a good time for it would be anymore.

When she finally got turned around, Julia just smiled and held out her hands for a hug. Abby practically crawled over the seat back to check on her baby girl. They hadn’t hit hard, neither of them getting jarred too badly. The car hadn’t even been going fast enough for the airbags to go off.

Abby knew that she needed to figure out how to get out of the ditch. Maybe she should call Carter. Or the cops. Then, she remembered that Roxie’s husband Carter had just been in an accident and wasn’t working at his shop. He wouldn’t be operating the tow truck.

Right then, all Abby wanted to do was cry because she had no idea what to do.

But because she knew her baby was fine, that both of them were fine, she got Julia out of her car seat and held her close.

She had to keep reminding herself that they were okay. She wasn’t even shaking, even though she probably should have been. Shock would likely do that to her later, but right now, she needed to hold her baby girl.

Headlights suddenly filled the car, and Abby closed her eyes and held Julia close, trying to protect her as best she could.

If a car hit them right then, Abby knew that they were done for.

But as the light continued to fill her car, the oncoming vehicle slowed.

The sound of a door opening and closing filled Abby’s ears, followed by the sounds of a person walking, their shoes crunching on the snow.

Someone tapped on the window and called out her name.

Her name.

They knew her.

But because she and Julia had fogged up the windows, Abby couldn’t see who it was. She scooted over in the backseat and opened the car door.

“Ryan,” she breathed. “Ryan.”

She had never been happier to see his bearded face.

Ryan frowned down at her, looked at Julia in her arms, and let out a soft curse. “Are you okay, Abby? What the hell happened?”

She just looked at him, and then promptly burst into tears.

She’s fairly certain that her mom’s deliciously crazy family–arriving in the US a bit before her birth from Ireland–gave her the love of storytelling. She started out in theater and commercials, but once her children began to arrive, she stayed home and gave writing a try. She’s incredibly grateful to be doing what she’s doing for a living. Heather belongs to MWA, RWA, Sisters in Crime, HWA, and ITW, and has the recipient of the RWA Lifetime Achievement Award, a Silver Bullet for charitable works, and this year, she will receive the Thriller Master title from ITW. C.D. Reiss is a USA Today bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up, she’s at the well, hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

Critics have dubbed the books “poetic,” “literary,” and “hauntingly atmospheric,” which is flattering enough for her to put it in a bio, but embarrassing enough for her not to tell her husband, or he might think she’s some sort of braggart who’s too good to chop a cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.
