In this enemies-to-lovers story where two nemesis’ have to work together to set a mysterious spell to rights, romance is bubbling and brewing between them the entire time, Gil and Tilda have zero chance of not falling in love.

Witcha Gonna Do is Flynn’s brand of comedy mixed in with a brand new paranormal world. Tilda and Gil move about in a social construct that is fresh and made this story unique.

Tilda is part of the most powerful family of witches, but unfortunately she is the one witch who doesn’t have any powers. Unless you count her social media skills.

Whereas Gil is from a witchy family that has been banned for the use of their magic powers. His backstory is unique in its own right and I loved how Gil and Tilda mashed together.

While Witcha Gonna Do is a brand new world for Avery Flynn there were some points in the book that drug by. However, I feel books such as these deserve a little grace, especially in the beginning. Creating fiction is hard, but creating a paranormal world where everything is entirely made up, I feel, is even harder.

Overall, this book is sort of silly with romance wrapped around the story, but it’s a nice escape, which is what reading is all about.

NOT JUST A CRUSH by Helena Hunting

The blustery wind pushes me through the door and causes a swirl of flakes to follow me. As soon as I’m clear of the door, she tries to close it. But the wind is strong, and she’s . . . tiny. The kind of tiny I associate with the girl on top of the cheerleader pyramid or those creepy semi-life-sized dolls they sell in department stores. It’s clear she’s using her full weight against the door, yet she’s losing the battle.
I lift a hand over her head—I don’t have to reach high to accomplish that—and push it closed. She stumbles forward a couple of steps, and her toe catches on the doormat. She recovers herself and spins around, her face a shade of pink I associate with embarrassment.
She takes three large steps to the side, putting a few feet of distance between us. She pushes her glasses up her nose and glances from the door to me and back again. “Good fucking God, are you part bear? You’re huge.” Her hands flail around in the air, then find each other, then part again.
“Maybe you’re just small?” I offer.
My breath puffs out in the air with each exhale, and so does hers. It’s freezing in here. Which explains why she’s wearing a parka, a beanie, a scarf, and a pair of giant mittens. All in matching shades of pink. She looks like a chewed-up wad of bubblegum with a face and limbs.
“Having trouble with the fire, then, Princess?” I motion to the hearth where the fire sits unlit.
She crosses her arms. “My name is Dahlia, not princess.”
“Dahlia?” I echo.
I inspect her closer. It can’t be . . .
Dahlia is not a common name. Tiny Dahlias with long, dark wavy hair and almond-shaped eyes so dark it’s nearly impossible to see where her iris ends and her pupils begin seem even more rare. But the odds seem . . . implausible.
“Yeah. Like the flower.” She pushes her glasses up her nose again with her mittened hand and goes back to crossing her arms.
And I stand there, like an idiot, and keep staring. Because it is her.
Dahlia Forest.
Seriously, that’s her name.
And I had the biggest fucking crush on her in high school.

Like seriously, the biggest fucking crush.

But I was on the football team, and she was a mathlete. We ran in different circles. I was a giant asshole with even bigger asshole friends, and she was a gorgeous nerd. One of my best friends back then, who I still talk to now, used to make fun of her all the time. It was juvenile. And dickish. I didn’t participate, but I also didn’t stop him. Which makes me just as bad, if not even worse.
So far, she hasn’t recognized me. It’s been four years. Maybe she won’t recognize me at all. Maybe I wasn’t on her radar in high school. Maybe she was too busy being a fucking genius to notice the jocks. Although she did tutor a couple of my teammates along the way.
I realize I haven’t replied to the whole flower comment or responded in general. “Looks like you had some trouble starting the fire.” I thumb over my shoulder.
“I never got the fire-making badge in Girl Scouts.” I can’t tell if she’s being sarcastic.
“Have you unpacked anything yet?” Man, my conversation skills need a serious workout.
“No, I was too busy trying to earn my fire-making badge.” Her nose is pink from the cold, and her cheeks are already flushed, but the way she ducks her head tells me she’s pretty damn embarrassed by her lack of fire- making ability.
I nod once. “All right. Well, let’s grab your bag and get you out of here.” “Out of here?” she parrots.
“Yeah. I’ll take you back to town. Set you up at the motel.” I take my gloves off because my hands are starting to sweat. The great thing about my jacket is that it keeps me warm in subzero temps. The bad part is that now that I’m no longer facing -30 degrees and a face full of snow, I’m over here sweating my balls off even though it’s pretty freaking frigid in here.
“Motel?” Her nose wrinkles. “Why can’t I stay here?”
“You can, but they’re gonna close the roads soon, and when they do that, you’ll be stuck here until they open them again.”
“Close the roads?” Apparently, she’s trying out for the role of parrot tonight.
“Yeah. Unless you missed it, there’s a blizzard happening out there. We’re getting another twelve to eighteen inches between tonight and tomorrow afternoon. If I don’t get you off the side of this mountain soon, we’re both going to be stuck here until the storm is over and they’ve had a chance to plow the roads.”
“Oh, my God. How long will that be?”

I shrug. “Could be a couple of days, could be a week.”

“A week?” Her tone is dog whistle shrill.

“It’s a big fucking storm.”

Mansplainer is cute, sweet and just all around adorable!!! I was all in for Griff, but he needs to move over because Nash is my new book boyfriend!

Nash may be an over the top mansplainer, but he has a huge heart of gold. He really can’t control his impulses to help in literally every situation, it’s just his nature to make everything better, whether you are family or complete stranger or even want it. So when he meets Chelle Finch and she’s one of the first people ever not only to not take his helpful advice, but to also help guide him away from his mansplainer ways he can’t help but be a little enthralled by her.

Chelle Finch finds herself in a dire need of a husband. When her father passed he left an antiquated stipulation in his will that says that in order to keep her foundation running she has to be married. With time running out and a misogynistic uncle trying to take over she has few options, but when an eccentric woman reads her fortune in the park which leads to a strange meeting at the dog park…well…I suppose that means her new husband is one gorgeous, mansplaining Nash Bennett.

Nash never wanted or even expected to fall for anyone. He thought for sure he’d be the winner between his cousin’s in their Last Man Standing bet, but the more time he spends time around Chelle the less sure he actually is. Chelle is unlike any woman he’s ever met and their agreement may have started as temporary, but he might actually like to keep his wife, if only she felt the same.

I totally emphasized with Chelle, as a woman in her forties, she is hard working and sometimes feels fed up with society and all of its norms. I too have had too many men tell me what to do and have reached a breaking point, but Nash understands her and I love them together.

Chelle also appreciates Nash and his overeager mansplaining. Instead of brushing him off or being mean, she gives him better direction. Something he really enjoyed. He’s a fixer at heart and enjoys pleasing people so when it’s directed to better use, well then he was a happy man. In turn, she saw that no one really cared for him since he spent all of his time caring for others, and she finds she really enjoys tending to Nash. They make the perfect pairing for this adorably cute couple.

This second book in the Last Man Standing series is my absolute favorite! Avery Flynn is known for her adorable humor mixed with smexy good times, Neanderthal is all that mixed with Legos, smart grunts, and southern sass.

Griff Beckett is the quiet cousin, known more for grunting or one word responses than he is for his deep conversation skills. That doesn’t mean he isn’t extremely intelligent. He usually has several projects in the works or fires to put out at work and to relax he likes to assemble 3000 piece lego sets. That’s to relax! The man’s mind is constantly on the go, but when he first heard Kinsey’s voice, or more importantly when he heard her solve multiple issues all at the same time, Griff instantly fell in love.

When Kinsey Dalton meets Griff, she’s stuck by how attractive he is, but then he says the one thing she dislikes. He puts her in a box just like everyone else and dismisses her based on her looks. She may be pretty and blonde, but she has a brain in her head, however, it doesn’t take long to notice that Griff may be sitting in his own box. He’s smarter than he allows people to believe. There is something there and she likes the gruff man, there is only one other problem. Her fake fiancé, Todd. Now, she just needs to kill him off, maybe her Meemaw has some ideas on how to go about that.

These two are adorable, brainy, quirky, and just darn likeable. Griff may find himself at a loss for words, but Kinsey understands him better than anyone right out of the gate. That’s destined love right there. He also finds her brain the most attractive feature on her, which is super hot. These two have wicked chemistry, but have a lot of roadblocks to finagle making this romcom just too cute. It’s a big win for Avery Flynn in my book.

So many adorable moments and crossover references. I loved the meddling family’s, fun dates, and just so many LOL moments to be had.

Even though Fiona and Dixon may have grown up in opposite worlds, they are more alike than they realize and it’s only when they spend time together, peeling back the lies and layers, that they truly discover their true selves and really enjoy each other to their fullest.

The outstanding moments came in with the blend of the large Hartigan family and the Beckett’s. While the Beckett’s is smaller, they are no less meddling in family affairs. Dixon and his cousins come up with a dare, while highly intoxicated of course, to be the last man standing in love, before the end of the year. The dare is, somewhat childish, but the Beckett’s never back down from a challenge and Dixon is by far one of the worst when it comes to never losing. He has to win at all costs, but he also sees no problem with this particular challenge. Love is something he never plans to do again so winning will be easy.

Dixon has been married and is currently a widow. He’s vowed never, ever to fall in love again. Been there, done that, never wants to feel that kind of pain again, but he also never loses. He has to win at all costs. He plans to take on this dare, six dates, no falling in love, no problem. That is until he meets Fiona Hartigan.

Why would Fiona ever date Dixon, especially knowing it’s all for a bet? She wants revenge. Dixon is the CEO of a cosmetics company and he’s dismissed her three times for a meeting. Three…stood up, dissing her, ignoring her times.This is her chance for an in to present her Nana’s products. She just needs to play it cool, help him win his bet and then she can ask him for any favor. It’s a win-win for both of them. That is until she starts falling for the man vs. the CEO tycoon.

With lots of steam, adorable meddling family moments, and the best reason of all…a hot mama’s boy…this book is a win-win-win.

Adorable, laugh out loud addition to the Ice Knights series!

The sparks fly when Ian and Shelby are locked away in a remote cabin together (an infamous Lucy setup? maybe…), but what happened in that zip code doesn’t stay in that zip code. Ian and Shelby brought the sparks back with them and their chemistry is so hot it basically melts the ice in the hockey rink.

Even though Shelby didn’t advertently release information about Ian and Alex’s parentage (two men and best friends from the same hockey team), it was leaked nonetheless. The outcome of that information was disastrous and a friendship between Ian and Alex was ruined along with the potential of a season championship. Shelby feels horrible, hence why she’s hiding out at a cabin all alone, or at least she thought she was. That was until Ian shows up at the same secluded cabin.

Ian is angry. He feels like the rug has been pulled out from under his life at the secrets and lies that both his father and Alex, the man whom he called his best friend, have been keeping from him. His own half-brother has known this secret for years and never told him so he’s angry, which is why he’s decided to hide out at a remote cabin and lick his wounds alone. Or at least he thought he was until he is stun gunned by a feisty woman, the very one who outed his family secret.

While Ian and Shelby work out their forgiveness, by ways of their instant chemistry, the team wants Shelby to work her magic on Ian and Alex so they can reconnect their friendship and the team can bring home a championship. Somethings may be easier said than done.

For anyone who has felt left out, out of place, weird, different, or just awk-weird you will identify with this book!! Oh, how my heart broke everytime…EVERY single time, Tess drifted into the background, mentioned she was temporary in someone’s life, that she was better off alone, etc…Avery Flynn you reached into my heart and put a big ol’ squeeze on it with her character.

Awk-Weird is a romcom by all accounts, but it is also full of good touchy feely moments. Both Cole and Tess had childhoods full of upheaval, but they manifested their adulthoods in different ways. Cole is a control freak with a capital C and F while Tess is shy and doesn’t people well.  These two were so right for each other, it just took them a bit to figure it out in the end and the story will make you laugh and cry while getting there.

At a wedding rehearsal dinner when both of their normal defenses were down and faulty condoms were used, Cole and Tess find themselves in the role of soon to be co-parents. Now, as they prepare for this big change, baby steps are made to prep them for the big one that is about to happen in a few months. Considering neither one saw this coming in their future, they have a lot of baby steps to make to get the up to speed in their communications skills, their emotional skills, their getting along skills…etc…

She took another small bite from her roll before answering. “My best friend is blackmailing me, and my dad wants a SAG card.”

That was definitely not the answer he’d been expecting. “And I thought my reasoning was twisted.”

“I’m sure it all makes sense in Gemma’s head,” Zara said. “She thinks I work too much and need to loosen up. She’ll let me be her plus-one to go meet a collector if I do the Bramble five dates thing. And my dad? Well, let’s just say he’s never met an unlikely plan he didn’t think he could pull off.”

All the possibilities this created sped around inside his head until one broke free like a perfect fast break late in the third period when the game was on the line. All he had to do was put the biscuit in the net.

“So neither of us really wants to be here,” he said. “We’re each other’s solution to getting back to our regular lives as soon as possible.”

It was fucking perfect. Petrov’s job with the team would be safe for another season—well, as safe as he could be, considering he didn’t have a no-trade deal in his contract.

“Agreed.” All of that sounded like it would cause more problems than it would solve anyway. “I’ve got a condition. Dressing up is not required. I’m not putting on a suit.”

The best thing about the off-season was not having to strangle himself with a tie multiple times a week just for a bus ride to the rink or a plane trip to another city. Coach Peppers was old-fashioned about doing things the original way.

“Fine.” Zara held up three fingers. “The third stipulation is that I’m not putting on a good attitude. If it’s been a crappy day, I don’t have to pretend to be a manic pixie dream girl.”

He snorted. “No one who’s met you would believe that. You’re a little salty.” That was putting it mildly based on her attitude when she showed up for their date.

“I have my reasons.” She added another finger, so she was holding up four. “Oh, and no making love. Sex?” She paused and looked him over quickly. “Maybe. Emotional, heartfelt, staring-each-other-in-the-eyes making love? Not gonna happen. No offense, but you’re not my type.”

What the hell? Not her type? He was a professional athlete making millions. He’d been led to believe he was everyone’s type.

“Not a problem, since I don’t think we could see eye to eye while having sex unless you magically grew a foot,” he said.

“You’re not into being creative?” Zara rolled her eyes. “I guess that’s expected for someone who has probably had women throwing themselves at him for years. You haven’t ever had to work for it.”

Caleb had no idea what to say to that. He’d been punched square in the face by the most feared goons in hockey and it hadn’t knocked him as senseless as this little five-foot-nothing of a snarky woman had done with a few choice words.

“I have one more rule,” she said, reaching for another roll. “Five dates and we’re done. Period. Do we have a deal?”

I not only fell in love with Caleb and Zara and their ultimate genuineness, but also their adorable banter, hot chemistry and all around charming odd pairing (which is perfectly made for each other). Caleb opts for five dates and saving his face and that of his team. Not only does Caleb go on the dates, he does it with humility, humor, and he finds that he actually enjoys them more than expected.

Zara is a small redhead filled with lots of gumption, saying what she thinks, and Caleb can’t help it, he’s drawn to her instantly. However, they both decide their “dates” are just for the duration of his penalty and once he’s out of the sin bin they can each go their separate ways, even if each date proves to be less and less of a punishment. Once she meets Caleb she knows that rules must be instituted, a man who landed himself in his predicament obviously needs guidance and Zara is a woman who likes order, rules and she isn’t about to let Caleb get past her defenses. Five dates and that’s it, no matter how charming and sexy he is.

Caleb and Zara set out, each with their own goals to meet, never expecting that their goals would mesh in the middle and that they might actually have a good time.
