Goodbye Old, Hello To The New! (My Year in Review)

The last time I wrote one of these “Hello, New Year” posts was before the world took a nosedive into chaos.

I was honestly shocked to realize that I had set aside the childlike wonderment of what it means to countdown to a new year and celebrate the new birth of shedding last years woes and releasing all the misery that it can bring and I think right there is the problem…I hadn’t. For the past two years, as a country, a nation, a world, we have all been living in this constant cycle of, “is it over yet?” Holding onto all the grief, misery, and turbulence that our world was struck down with. I know I personally retreated hard into reading and read more books than I ever have in my entire life, but even as I enjoyed the escape it caused sacrifice in things like dusting (not a big deal I hate dusting), or exercise (okay, I should do that more, but ehhhh), or writing (now this is something that I greatly enjoyed-soooo now I needed to rethink things).

So while I hate resolutions, because I hate making promises that I know I will never keep…I prefer looking at the new year with new promise and hope. With that not-resolution in mind – I am making a promise to give myself grace in easing back into this thing called life. The very thing I know I have been avoiding for the past couple of years, but here goes.

I realize it’s yucky out there and the world has turned into a dark place. However, with that knowledge I hope to discover my joy for writing again (and not dusting, because ewww) and allow myself the grace to just sit in the chaos of the world instead of instantly retreating to all of the fiction that I love.

Sooooo, enough with the heavy and on to the good stuff….My top picks for 2022. I read a lot of books this past year. Not quite as many as 2021, but still it boiled down to almost a book a day. Considering I work, had a daughter who was married earlier this year, and I keep up with this blog, fitting all of that reading in shows just how much I escaped.

Thank you to all of the authors who helped me escape. I loved every moment of it ❤️.

If you’d like to visit any of the places I visited in the past year feel free to read all the reviews for books I’ve read in 2022 under Book Reviews

Please check out all the books released this past year listed under New Releases

I hold all of the books I read near and dear to my heart and it really is hard to pick just a few favorites, but as I went back and sifted through what I read a few titles jumped out. So let’s get to why they did…here are my favorite books of 2022!!

The Best Of 2022 by Kay Daniels

Star

*Every category is totally and completely picked by Kay Daniels Romance and all opinions are my own*

1. The Best Book of 2022:
The Devil of Dublin, by B.B. Easton

Aside from the drop dead gorgeous cover, because I know, don’t judge a book by one-but come on….am I right?🔥🥵….but aside from his gorgeous eyes…The Devil of Dublin had everything that I like to call the “IT” factor when I read it. Witty humor, intriguing/suspenseful plot, virgin hero with a dark past, just a touch of the supernatural, a true anti-hero with a heart of gold, but put into dark situations kind of story, and best of all it allowed me to travel to the lush landscape of Ireland. I could practically hear the Irish accents jump off the page when I read it. I don’t purchase many paperbacks, as I hate dusting, but this was one story I felt compelled to own. That is how much I loved this book. I was drawn in, entranced, and completely blown away by this magical tale.

Devil of Dublin by BB Easton is AVAILABLE NOW in Kindle Unlimited!

Here is the synopsis:

Devil of Dublin, a dark mafia romance drenched in Irish folklore!! ⁣⁣⁣
☘️ Broken boy turned mafia hitman⁣⁣⁣
☘️ Dreamy Irish scenery⁣⁣⁣
☘️ Forbidden love⁣⁣⁣
☘️ Folklore/fated mates⁣⁣⁣
☘️ Us against the world/couple on the run vibes⁣⁣⁣
☘️ White knuckle suspense⁣⁣⁣
☘️ Heart racing 🔥🔥🔥⁣⁣⁣
☘️ Deeply romantic and hauntingly dark⁣⁣⁣!!

I can’t remember anymore if my grandfather’s eyes were blue or green, but I’ll never forget the way they wrinkled at the corners when he laughed at one of his own jokes. Or the way they sparkled with mischief when he told me tales about the magical creatures that dwelled in the forest behind his humble Irish sheep farm—shy fairies who liked to eat tea biscuits, cruel witches who liked to eat children, a moody lake spirit with a taste for expensive gifts.

As a child, I believed every fantastical word. But when he warned me about the mute boy who also lurked in those woods, the one the priest had declared to be the spawn of Satan himself, I refused to listen. Kellen wasn’t evil. He was kind, and beautiful, and special, and hurting. He was my friend. And with every summer I spent stolen away with him in those enchanted woods, he grew to become so much more.

But when I return to Glenshire as an adult, grieving and engaged to someone else, all those legends quickly morph into nightmares.

My grandfather had been right about everything, especially the boy.

If only I had listened.
WARNING: If you are a sensitive reader or find certain topics to be emotionally triggering, please exercise self-care and select a different book. Devil of Dublin is intended for mature audiences who enjoy dark subject matter, tortured anti-heroes, explicit adult content, graphic violence, heart-pounding suspense, fairy-tale worthy love, and gorgeous Irish scenery. If that sounds like you, then welcome to Glenshire!

2. The Best Romance that also broke my heart in 2022:
Runaway; Empire High #5 by Ivy Smoak

You are probably scratching your head at this #2 spot. Give me chance to explain…as I scrolled through my list of books, Runaway stood up and smacked me in the face with all the feels all over again. It still had the power to evoke tears because the story is just that powerful. Even though it is the fifth book in a continuing series, it is, as Ivy explains, a bubble of a story where Brooke (the female MC) gets to live the perfect life with a man who loves her, adores her, and gives her everything without all of the hate, backstabbing, and lies that she had been tormented with before escaping into that bubble. You see prior to this interlude Brooke had lost everyone or been betrayed by everyone in her life. This bubble sounds pretty great right?? Who wouldn’t want to live in this bubble?? Hold your britches because even as a fan of the series I was in awe of how Ivy made me fall in love with this book. Like totally in complete love for how this little bubble was so ultimately perfect…until it popped and those are when the tears hit. Big fat ugly ones. That is why this book in on my list. I honestly can’t think of another series when I’ve been totally ALL in for this kind of bait and switch and then was a total emotional mess over the inaliation and yet, I still want more. Yes, please, may I have another, and pass me a tissue while you do……but, seriously, I love when authors twist things up and this was a great one!!

Here is the Synopsis:

To the first boy I ever loved.

I intended to keep my promises to you. I swear. I loved you, Matthew Caldwell. With my whole heart. I think a piece of me will always love you.

But it all came crashing down when I realized you didn’t keep your promises to me.

I refuse to take any of my days for granted. I learned that the hard way.

So I’m sorry. But I can’t keep my promises to someone who didn’t keep theirs.

XOXO,
-Brooklyn Sanders

3. The Best Book To Read Going In Blind In 2022:
Requiem by Callie Hart

I love reading…well basically everything. So reading reviews before I purchase items is pretty much automatic for me. Need a new pillow; read a review. Need a new vacuum; read a review. Want a new book; read a review. You see where I’m going with this…however, there are also authors that are just a one-click no matter what they write I buy it because I love everything they write. There are also books, based on plot, that should also be one-clicked. No questions asked. I want to state that Requiem fits into both of those categories. It’s a book that plagued me for days, weeks, months even after I finished it. I wouldn’t shut up about this book with those in my close circle because it blew my mind. So while I won’t give even the slightest hint as to what the plot is about I will say it is one of those books that will cause discussion at the dinner table because it certainly did at mine.

Here is the synopsis for Requiem:

SORRELL

He’s going to pay for what he’s done…

Theo Merchant was born into a kind of privilege I’ve never known.

He has everything I don’t: Money. A private school education. Popularity. A bright and shiny future, full of success to look forward to. He took the only thing I had going for me—my best friend, Rachel. Now that she’s gone, I have nothing left to lose.

I will infiltrate his world.

I will cradle his worthless heart in my hands.

I will burn down his entire life and destroy everything he holds dear.

I haven’t enrolled at Toussaint Academy to learn.

I’ve come to destroy a monster…

…and I won’t leave until he’s dead.

THEO

She has no idea what she’s getting herself into…

Sorrell Voss is intelligent, caustic as hell, and quite possibly the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. She’s also going to get herself f#cking killed.

She’s a fool if she thinks I’ll go easy on her just because she’s broken.

You don’t venture into the lion’s den and walk away unscathed.

She has her secrets. That’s fine.

*My* secrets will unravel her until she comes apart at the seams.

She will bow to me, and she will break.

Then, and only then, will I make her mine.

REQUIEM is a 110,000-word, full-length enemies-to-lovers dark high school romance standalone. Some scenes within this book may be considered triggering to some readers, and it is therefore recommended for an audience 17+.

4. The funniest, hottest, holiday book in 2022:
A Merry Little Meet Cute by Julie Murphy and Sierra Simone

Holiday stories, a lot of times get the same settings as our favorites Hallmark movies, or they go the total opposite and everything goes wrong. Imagine both of those mashed together with all of the sexy times you can handle. That is A Merry Little Meet Cute in a nutshell. The story is hilarious, fun, and also full of holiday whimsy. I loved that it was full of body positivity and had a color cast to boot, which always makes for great reading. The entire book was a total joy to read and don’t get me started on the hotness factor…or maybe do. The female lead is from the porn industry and I adored her, want to be best friends with her. Yes, she’s a total catch. I don’t normally pick a holiday book for my list, but this book had that something special that I just couldn’t shake and it still makes me chuckle when I think about it.

Here is the synopsis:

Cowritten by #1 New York Times bestselling author Julie Murphy and USA Today bestselling author Sierra Simone—a steamy plus-size holiday rom-com about an adult film star who is semi-accidentally cast as a lead in a family-friendly Christmas movie, and the former bad-boy pop star she falls in love with.

Bee Hobbes (aka Bianca Von Honey) has a successful career as a plus-size adult film star. With a huge following and two supportive moms, Bee couldn’t ask for more. But when Bee’s favorite producer casts her to star in a Christmas movie he’s making for the squeaky-clean Hope Channel, Bee’s career is about to take a more family-friendly direction.

Forced to keep her work as Bianca under wraps, Bee quickly learns this is a task a lot easier said than done. Though it all becomes worthwhile when she discovers her co-star is none other than childhood crush Nolan Shaw, an ex-boy band member in desperate need of career rehab. Nolan’s promised his bulldog manager to keep it zipped up on set, and he will if it means he’ll be able to provide a more stable living situation for his sister and mom.

But things heat up quickly in Christmas Notch, Vermont, when Nolan recognizes his new co-star from her ClosedDoors account (oh yeah, he’s a member). Now Bee and Nolan are sneaking off for quickies on set, keeping their new relationship a secret from the Hope Channel’s execs. Things only get trickier when the reporter who torpedoed Nolan’s singing career comes snooping around—and takes an instant interest in mysterious newcomer Bee.

And if Bee and Nolan can’t keep their off-camera romance behind the scenes, then this merry little meet cute might end up on the cutting room floor.

5. The Standout Book(s) of 2022:
Beyond My Darkness by R.C. Boldt , When It Ends by Penelope Black , Pen Pal by J.T. Geissinger

I had three books that I circled for this last spot and they all had a similar theme making it hard to pick just one. What was that theme? The Supernatural/paranormal and impending death. Cheerie subjects for the beginning of the new year, am I right?

I think with the way the world has been turning the past few years…I was drawn to this subject matter quite a bit – either through dystopian worlds, rebuilding worlds, the end of the world, death upon whole world…you name it…I loved it, craved it and fell in hard core love it. Hence, the titles listed above. While Pen Pal and Beyond My Darkness don’t necessarily fall into the total world enialition theme, they are unique in within their own rights. If you decide to check them out, I hope you love the dark themes contained within as much as I did.

P.S. I also don’t mind reading books that create a little controversy…if you get my drift and one of these titles definitely did that, so beware if you enjoy reading reviews 😉.

Here is the Synopsis for Beyond My Darkness:

USA Today bestselling author RC Boldt delivers a seductively unique romantic suspense with a paranormal twist in Beyond My Darkness

Twelve years ago, I fled, vowing to never again use my power. But everything changes when I break that vow and bring two bodies back to life in the morgue.

It sends me spinning directly into his orbit.

Arrogant. Menacing. Enigmatic. That’s Bronson Cortez, the notoriously violent gang leader who remains elusive to authorities.

He breaks the law at every turn and answers to no one. But when he offers me an alluring glimpse of what lies beneath that iron-clad exterior, I realize there’s more to him than meets the eye.

The man who fiercely guards his heart somehow manages to claim mine.

But he doesn’t know the truth about me.

I wonder if he could be the first to accept me for who I am—what I am.

I wonder if he’ll be the first to see beyond my darkness.

Here is the Synopsis for When It Ends:

WHEN IT ENDS by Penelope Black is a contemporary, adult, apocalyptic, reverse harem, romance story line focusing on Amelia, Cole, West and Gray.

Told from four first person perspectives (Amelia, Cole, West and Gray) WHEN IT ENDS follows twenty-two year old Amelia Christensen in the days prior to the literal end of the world. After a one-night stand in Vegas with a man she knows only as Sonny, Amelia returns to her grandmother’s home, where she will embark on a journey with her past.

Enter Cole Armstrong and West Campbell the two boys Amelia had fallen in love with years before, two boys lost in the foster care system, never to be heard from again but an environmental disaster is about to ravage the world, and along with another foster brother Gray aka Sonny, our foursome head for places unknown in the wake of an apocalyptic meltdown.

Amelia’s father works for the government, and has offered a place of sanctuary but our heroine refuses to leave behind the men with whom she is falling in love. What ensues is the quick rebuilding relationship between Amelia and Cole, West and Gray, and the potential fall-out as the end of the world beckons.

WHEN IT ENDS follows the foursome as they must overcome the ensuing chaos and panic of a world about to implode. People are panicking, lives are lost, and only the chosen few will survive.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Here is the synopsis for Pen Pal:

The #1 international and Amazon Charts bestselling novel

The first letter arrived the day my husband was buried. It was postmarked from the state penitentiary, and contained a single sentence:

I’ll wait forever if I have to.

It was signed by Dante, a man I didn’t know.

Out of simple curiosity, I wrote back to ask him what exactly he was waiting for. His reply?

You.

I told the mystery man he had the wrong girl. He said he didn’t. I said we’d never met, but he said I was wrong.

We went back and forth, exchanging letters every week that grew increasingly more intimate. Then one day, the letters stopped. When I found out why, it was already too late.

Dante was at my doorstep.

And nothing on earth could have prepared me for what happened next.

WARNING:

This novel contains content intended for a mature audience only. Due to explicit language, graphic sex, detailed depictions of death and grief, intense power play dynamics, and other possible triggers, it is not suitable for sensitive readers. (Full list of TWs on author’s website.)

Review:
I am emotionally spent. I am almost at a loss for words over the twists of this beautiful book. Requiem was nothing like I expected and I couldn’t put it down once I began reading. It is absolutely fantastic!

This may seem like a weird statement with a dark, enemies-to lovers book, but Sorrell and Theo are couple goals!!

Requiem is a twisted up story that I never saw coming. I’m not even sure how to describe my feelings or even what to say without giving anything away, except if you enjoy new adult, angsty books with strong heros and heroines this book is a must read.

I hate to cut this review short for such a big book, but seriously, I’m still in book hangover mode today. It’s unlike anything I’ve read and I know it’s a book that will stay with me for a long time.

Riot Act; Crooked Sinners #3
(A standalone within a series)

Publication Date: October 12, 2021

Genre/Tropes: New Adult/Dark Romance

Author: Callie Hart

Review Rating: 5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:

Callie Hart has written an explosive book with a dynamic couple at the helm. A Phoenix and a Sinner – two similar souls who have lead very different lives, but collide in a firework of pain and color where their souls fall in love. A TEN star worthy book!!

As much as I love Wren Jacobi, Riot Act is now my favorite Crooked Sinner book. This story is engaging and is one that will be completely unforgettable. I was so engrossed in reading that I’d forget where I was, what day of the week it was, or even what time of day it was. Riot Act is a true masterpiece.

Pax Davis is a complex character. He lives life to the fullest – a young man with a YOLO mentality and also filled with sociopathic rage that boils just underneath his skin. His hair trigger personality can be fun one moment and then make it wish you’d never met him the very next – Pax is so interesting, I loved…LOVED getting inside his head.

One of three boys who live in Riot House, he’s just one of the fascinating characters that made up the three personalities that all fit together and are best friends who live in the lone house at the top of the mountain at Wolf Hall, but more than that they are ride or die brothers. Wren, Dash, and Pax each have their own unique traits and Pax has just been darn delicious getting to know in this final installment of the Crooked Sinners.

Presley Chase, who previously has been shy, timid and a total wallflower, rises from the ashes of her former self and becomes a glorious phoenix in this book. The old Pres is killed off and the new Presley is no longer living in the shadows, afraid of what she wants. Pax is confused, while he desperately desires the fiery redhead, a girl he never used to give a second glance to in the past. Now everywhere he turns Presley is in his sights. She’s glorious and he doesn’t know how to handle this new version or if he even wants to.

These two together are explosive, with chemistry through the stratosphere! It is crazy just how hot these two fire up the pages. Fans, air conditioning, and all the additional panties won’t prepare you.

Callie wrote a phenomenal book and I was riveted from the very beginning. I was turning pages so fast and I loved every word. Pax and Pres are a fantastic power couple, one that will fit perfectly with the other Riot House couples. Yes, I’m still torn up over Wren vs. Pax, it’s a tough war over who wins the number one spot…thankfully Callie gives all the boys some time in this book because I love them all. Yes, all the Sinners deserve a golden trophy. A naked golden trophy made in their likeness. 🙂

Ophelia Lang needs money, and she needs it bad. Her parent’s restaurant is going under, and ever since she lost her job teaching third grade elementary, scraping enough cash together to pay the bills has proven almost impossible. Her parents are on the brink of losing their home. The vultures are circling overhead. So when Ophelia is offered an interview for a well-paid private tutoring gig in New York, how can she possibly say no?

Ronan Fletcher is far from the overweight, balding businessman Ophelia expected him to be. He’s young, handsome, and wealthy beyond all reason. He’s also perhaps the coldest, rudest person she’s ever met, and has a mean streak in him a mile and a half wide. A hundred grand is a lot of money, however, and if tolerating his frosty temperament, his erratic mood swings and whatever else he throws at her means she’ll get paid, then that is what Ophelia will do.

Her new boss is keeping secrets, though. Awful, terrible secrets.

The ghosts of Ronan Fletcher’s past are about to turn Ophelia’s future upside down, and she can’t even see it coming.

EXCERPT

Dashiell runs his hands through his hair, which is slightly drier than when he first entered my room but still wet enough for the strands to be clumped together. “What’s the alternative? Are we supposed to get to know each other? Share all of our deepest, darkest secrets? What, you wanna date me, Carina Mendoza?” He laughs coldly. “We’ve been through this. I’m not datable. I’m fuckable. I’m hate-able. I’m plenty of things…but you do not want to date me, Carrie. I can promise you that.”
“And you know me so well?” I’m stewing, alive with anger, my blood churning in my veins, hating the fact that there’s this sick, miserable feeling of disappointment welling in the pit of my stomach. He’s rejecting me all over again. “Don’t tell me what I want and I don’t want, asshole. You don’t know shit about me. If you’re not interested in me, then have the balls to say that and be clear instead of all of this dancing around, and side-stepping, and…and being so godddamn English.”
“Most people find my Englishness charming.”
“Well, I don’t. It’s annoying. You’re always skirting around whatever you want to say. You can never take a direct, straight line from point A to point B in a conversation—”
“Where’s the fun in straight lines?”
“—You have to meander and take the longest, most obscure route possible. And on top of all that, then you’re so unclear about your motives or goals that no one can ever get their head straight—”
“I can’t be direct like you people. I’ve tried. It causes me physical pain to be so abrupt. But fine. If you insist, I’ll give it a go.” He straightens, standing up tall, cracking his fingers as he stares down at me, his eyes full of ice-cold flames. “I’d fuck you, love. I would. But I’d probably never speak to you again. And you’d hate me. And I wouldn’t care, which would only make you hate me even more. Graduation will roll around, and I’ll make some kind of speech. You’ll sit there in your chair on the second-to-back row, and you’ll be filled with a burning hatred for me. And I…I won’t notice any of it. I won’t feel a fucking thing. I won’t care. It’ll be a miracle if I even remember you exist.
“Like I said. You’re better off forgetting all about me, love. Once I’ve made you come, I’ll move onto the next pretty girl with a decent sized rack, and that’ll be that. You won’t hear from me. There won’t be any texts. We won’t go skipping, hand-in-hand down the corridors of this dumpster fire. I’ll have ruined you. I’ll be this ugly sore of a memory, festering in the back of your mind, poisoning every future relationship you ever have because I made it impossible for you to trust men. Then, I’ll be back in England, sitting on my spoiled ass, re-reading the classics and fucking the housekeepers ’cause I’ve got nothing better to do. Not thinking about you…” He steps closer, reaching up, taking a piece of my loose hair, winding it thoughtfully around his finger. “Not remembering you. Not caring that I hurt you.” He pauses, and this is when I finally reach my lowest and my most despicable. Because his words hurt more than the sharp edge of a razor blade, but I’m still leaning into him. I’m still craving his touch. I’m still dizzy on his nearness, and the fact that I can smell the night and the rain on his warm skin, and no matter how hard I hate myself for it…I still fucking want him.

Riot Rules; Crooked Sinners #2
(A standalone within a series)

by: Callie Hart

Review Rating:

Review/Synopsis:

Review:

Riot Rules is a girthy book, but every page is vital to the story and every page is SO worth it!!

Winding through two years worth of story at Wolf Hall we get to witness the ups and downs of several characters through this timeline while still keeping the heart of the story between Dash and Carrie. Trust me when I say you are going to fall deeply in love with Lord Dashiell, and weep for everything that is Carina.

With the length of this book it’s hard to summarize everything that is completely and totally amazing about this book, but one of the best parts I love is how it weaves in and out between the timeline of Riot House. Riot Rules begins well before Elodie ever walks the halls of Wolf Hall and yet this book also ends after Wren and Elodie have their love story. Callie was brilliant in her writing to fit Riot Rules uniquely around that timeline and still gave us a fresh new love story that fit Dash and Carrie on both sides of Riot House along the way.

Dash and Carrie both made my heart soar and plummet to the ground multiple times as I was reading. Doomed lovers, they would appear, from the very beginning. Lord Dashiell is a titled Englishman afterall, only attending school in America after embarrassing his father – in other words, he’s been banished. He is still supposed to return to England and assume his rightful place as a Duke, given he meets his father’s expectations, which wouldn’t mean dating a common place girl. He knows better than to get close to Carrie, for more reasons than just his duty, but try telling that to him whenever she comes close. His brain short circuits, along with other body parts. So is there any harm in just taking a small taste, just this once. Get his infatuation out of his system? He will leave America at some point and his time at Wolf Hall will all be a distant memory, he might as well make the most of it.

Carrie is so far beneath common, she is living a lie. A lie she has become so ingrained telling that she has almost forgotten her real name, not that she’d ever want to return to the filth and squalor she came from, but she needs those lies to save herself from something more dangerous and telling the truth isn’t an option for her. No matter what her body may want, a sinful foreign boy whom she can’t seem to stay away from, her mind knows better. He can never know the truth about her and that is the harsh reality she knows she must face, but until then, she’ll listen to her body. Make the most of the time she has left, what’s the harm in enjoying life?

Trying to contain a lie, a secret, something that should flourish, is never a good idea, especially at Wolf Hall. It always gets out and when it does, it explodes. Dash and Carrie’s romance is a fever that will ignite in your heart and explode through your system. These two will have your heart beating faster and your mind screaming over how to make their love work. Afterall, we know of another titled Englishman and commoner who wed not so long ago.

While there are timelines that coincide and made me giddy, this book also reads as a complete standalone. Although if you haven’t read Riot House yet, I would recommend reading it first just because Riot Rules will give away some of the Ah Ha moments and might spoil those for you, other than that, get ready for an amazing read in Riot Rules. You will not be able to put this book down.

Riot House
(A standalone)

by: Callie Hart

Review Rating:

Review/Synopsis:

Review:

I read a preview of the Riot House in the Bully Me anthology last month and I’ve been looking forward to returning to this world since then. I can’t remember reading something so poetically lovely wrapped around such a tragic story in a very long time. Callie Hart’s words are top shelf level gorgeous, her descriptions are eloquent, even when you are reading about dark topics I am so taken in and wrapped up in the beautiful writing that I could read her words forever.

Wren Jacobi is a dark, poetically tragic soul. He comes across as an enigma, with just enough damage without being completely broken. He believes his heart is blackened, under lock and key and shut up tight, but he is also artistic (expressing his emotions through other means), he’s also intelligent, and strategic with every life move he makes. A gorgeous specimen of a man who can battle with big words, sharp logic, while digging into your psyche to tear apart your soul. As much as he prepared for Elonie Stillwater’s arrival he never took into account her own will and determination. I loved reading his character shape and reshape as the story progressed.

Elonie was raised under her militant father and bears many scars of her own. While many students would hate to be away from their families at boarding school she isn’t one of them. However, when she arrives, meets Wren and his initial threat to watch her back is layed down she isn’t scared since she has faced worse than pretty boy Wren Jacobi. Even with his continued scrutiny, his friends snide remarks, and just overall unsettling feeling she enjoys being away from her militant father, anything is better than that. She is also somewhat of a mystery. She has many layers that slowly are revealed as the story progresses and she is a powerful woman to be revered.

Wren is fascinated by Elonie. Her gumption to never give in intrigues him, she may not be the lamb he thought she was initially. Elonie finds herself pulled to Wren even when her instincts tell her she shouldn’t. Who is the lamb and who is the wolf? Come to Riot House and find out.

Synopsis:

They might be richer than gods, but they’re morally bankrupt.
As far as the boys who run America’s most exclusive international academy are concerned, I’m an unwelcome interloper, an inconvenience, and they’re determined to make my life a living hell.

When Wren Jacobi sets eyes on Wolf Hall Academy’s newest inductee, all he sees is an easy mark. A reserved little girl with a target painted on her back. He knows nothing of my troubled past, though. Nothing of my mother’s suspicious death, or the horrific treatment I’ve had to endure at the hands of my psychotic father.

And he has no idea of the lengths that I, unassuming little Elodie Stillwater, will go to in order to break the savage beast who dreams of breaking me first.

There’s a wolf stalking the forests that surround my new school.
Little does he know…
There are far scarier predators lurking out there in the dark.

Review/Synopsis:

Review:

This class of 2020 has it all! Redemption for prior bullies , prequels to what will happen to new bullies, origin stories to flush out what has happened to old bullies, and most importantly angst on top of angst on top of angst. Bully Me is gloriously full of short stories written by a collection of authors that know how to write some of the best angsty stories. Let me tell you that with each story in this anthology, you will not only be drawn into a new world worth diving head first into, but you will want to devour it entirely.

The authors and stories included in this anthology are:

Charlie by Siobhan Davis

Make You Beg by Shantel Tessier

Like You Care by Kaydence Snow

A Prequel to The Boy on the Bridge by Sam Mariano

The Original Bullet by Coralee June

Devil’s Day Party by C.M. Stunich

Hood River Rat by K. Webster

Riot House by Callie Hart

Charlie: This is part of the Rydeville series and yet if you haven’t read this amazing series yet, this short story will give you a look into what the story is about and what is coming up for the future of where the series is headed without giving too much away on either account. Charlie held a pivotal role in the overall arc, but here he is after the dust has settled just trying to pick up his shattered life and living with the remorse he initially played. This story will gut you if you are a fan and have you looking forward to the next book in the series.
The Original Bullet: This is a prequel to the series where you get a glimpse into Summer and Gavriel’s beginning. Summer is a meek, perfect girl by all appearances, but when Gavriel moves in across the street the girl inside comes out to say hello. These two unlikely people actually bond and give us a teaser to their bigger overall story. I haven’t read the trilogy yet, but I’m really looking forward to picking it up.
A Prequel to The Boy on the Bridge: A regrettable mistake, an unlikely friendship, and abuse all tie up in this prequel that is a total gripping read. I really need to know more after reading this story because I have a burning desire to find out what happens when things all go to hell for Hunter and Riley.  This story will tug at your empathy and angst so hard. GAH! You’ll love it!
Hood River Rat: A new adult/coming of age MM dark romance. A story full of bullies, but also a story full of compassion. A student that is very aware of his sexual orientation, but now that he’s moved to a new school, he’s just trying to fit in socially and he doesn’t want to make his sexuality stand out, but when the biggest bully in school sets off his gaydar it’s hard not to take notice of him. This story had my emotions up and down and all over the place. I desperately need to know what happens next and I can’t wait to find out.

Make You Beg Blurb:
Some say what I did was wrong. He was a great guy, a talented athlete who had a big future. People asked me why him as if I had picked a random kid out of a crowd.

He was innocent, they argued. But they were wrong. Blind to the truth that I saw.

He was arrested for his crimes and not even once during his three-month trial did he deny it. The evidence was stacked against him, but the prosecution was missing one key element to convict him.

The body.

I saw it.

I was the one who found her. A young girl taken too soon by a vicious, evil teenage boy.

The media shamed me while praising him. He kept his head held high, and I was an emotional wreck. It hurt to turn my best friend in, and then everyone took his side, warning me to retract my statement. They wanted me to say I was drunk and couldn’t remember what I saw. I knew what happened, and I refused to turn a blind eye.

I’m the only person who can make him pay. Consequences be damned.

Excerpt:
“I loved you.”

His body stiffens against mine, and his face goes hard as stone. Tears prick my eyes because the words were true. I loved them all. But Scout? He was the one for me. He was the one that I would do anything for.

“Yeah, I loved you too,” he admits after a long second. His eyes skim over my body, and he pulls his lip back in disgust. “But you chose to betray us.” He turns to walk away, and I refuse to let him have the last word. I didn’t show up here for nothing tonight.

I grab his arm and yank him back to me while my free arm is across my chest, covering my exposed boobs. “I did the right thing.”

He places his hands on the wall, caging me in. He pushed his body into mine, pinning my back to the wall. “Was it the right thing?” he demands. “It cost you everything, Henley.”

I swallow.

“Your friends. Your reputation.”

“You know I don’t care about that.” I’ve never cared much what people think of me.

“And me,” he whispers as if it hurt for him to say it.

My chest tightens. “Scout …”

“I was the biggest price you paid, Henley. Do you regret it?”

CHARLIE (Rydeville Elite#4) Bully Me: Class of 2020

Demi

Dropping out of college senior year was never part of my plan. But Dad needs me, and I’d move mountains for the only parent I’ve ever known—even working for the company that fired him. It makes me sick, but I’m low on options. My boss, Charlie, is determined to make my life a living hell, availing of every opportunity to undermine my confidence, to humiliate and threaten me.Sleeping with him the night of his wedding might have something to do with his attitude. Or the fact I’m the spitting image of the woman he really wants. If our financial situation wasn’t so dire, I’d tell Charlie to stick his job up his delectablebutt. But I’m trapped, and things are only getting worse. Because the more layers I uncover, the more I realize he is nothing l expected and everything I crave.

Charlie

If there was a manual for all the ways a person could mess up his life, it’d have my name written on it. I can’t undo the things I’ve done, no matter how badly I want to, and every day is a constant reminder of my epic failure. Especially her. It’s as if Demi has been put on this earth to punish me. To inflict more torture and pain. Because every second I’m around her, she makes me feel things I don’t want to feel. So, I lash out. Doing my best to push her away. Until I realize she’s everything I never knew I needed, and the fight becomes a new battle-one to win her heart.

A Prequel to The Boy on the Bridge:
The day I met Hunter Maxwell he wasn’t the rich kid who lived in the giant house, he wasn’t the most popular guy in school, he certainly wasn’t the bully who had chased his own best friend out of town after a falling out—he was just a boy with a black eye and a dark secret.

My life would have been much easier if I had stayed out of it, but I couldn’t. I saw someone hurting and wanted to help. I saw someone possibly in danger and wanted to make sure he was safe.

There’s nothing safe about Hunter Maxwell, though. I thought there might be. I fell under his spell. Whatever the world saw when they looked at him, it wasn’t what he showed me.

The bond we formed was real. I know it was real. But with Hunter, when the tides turn, you’d better hope you’re safely on the shore and out of his reach.

I thought I was a strong enough swimmer to keep my head above water. I thought if it came down to it, I could resist his pull.

I didn’t know, but now I do.

Once Hunter sets his sights on you, there’s no such thing as out of his reach. Whether it’s today, tomorrow, or five years from now, he’s coming for me—and when he does, he won’t stop until he’s destroyed me.

Like You Care Blurb:
I am nothing.

Nobody.

I’d rather be invisible than deal with what happens on the days my classmates decide to acknowledge my existence.

But then Turner shows up – all cool confidence and witty banter – and all of a sudden I don’t want to be invisible any more. I want to be seen.

I want him to see me.

I’m not who he thinks I am but I’m starting to suspect he’s not all he says he is either.

Just my luck that he starts to make friends with my tormentors. How am I supposed to tell him who I really am? How am I supposed to show him my true face? What if the boy I’m falling in love with decides I’m nothing too?

THE ORIGINAL BULLET BLURB:

There’s a new boy next door.

He’s got cold eyes and a name too big for this tiny, pretentious town—Gavriel Moretti. I like to watch him sometimes from my window. I like to imagine his killer smile twisting that mouth up into words meant only for me.

He had me figured out the first day we met. He called me out on my bullshit and pushed me away, but I was determined to be Gavriel Moretti’s friend. Maybe I liked cruel boys. Maybe I was lonely.

Or maybe he was the first real thing I’d ever laid eyes on, and I was determined to escape my fake life.

First he hated me. Then he liked me. And maybe one day, if I was lucky enough, Gavriel Moretti would love me.

*this is a prequel to the completed International Bestselling Bullets trilogy. This trilogy is a dark Reverse Harem Romance.

ABOUT CORALEE JUNE

I’ve always been passionate about storytelling and impressed by the influence it has on people. I love engaging with the projects I work on, diving headfirst into developing real, raw, and relatable characters.

I like flawed and beautiful things.

I’m a Texas State University English Major, and my wild affair with literature began at a young age. I’ve always stayed up past my bedtime to read the stories your mother wouldn’t approve of.

I love angst. I love to crack open a book and borrow the character’s emotions for a bit. It’s how I approach writing, too.

I live in Dallas, Tx with my husband and two beautiful, headstrong daughters. I enjoy long walks through the ice cream aisle at my local grocery store and listening to gangster rap in my minivan.

A fresh start.
An escape from my painful past.
Better in every way.

I’m a popular guy. Approachable. I make friends easily.
Cool car. Nice clothes. Good attitude.
Everything will be fine.

School is school.
I’ll keep my head down until graduation and try not to stick out.
College will be here before I know it.

Yet my first day proves to be anything but easy.
The Hood River Hoodlums—our school’s most notorious group of bad boys—have put a target on my back.
Their leader, Roan, hates me.
He calls me Rat.
To him and his friends, I’m a loser who doesn’t belong at their school.

I could pretend I don’t care about their hate.
If only Roan wasn’t so hot.
He’s mean, cruel, and sexy as hell.
My nemesis is impossible to ignore…and a secret part of me doesn’t want to.

Here I thought being gay was the worst of my problems.
Turns out, being gay and crushing on your enemy takes the cake.

They’re our bullies.
They’re the class of 2020.

Eight bestselling authors are teaming up to bring you eight unique stories about the guys we love to hate.

“911. What is your emergency?”

Every night, Zara Llewelyn picks up the phone and assists people in distress. House fires. Assault. Motor vehicle accidents. Home invasions…

Between the hours of six and two, she is the answer to a thousand cries for help. But when the payphone outside Zara’s apartment building mysteriously begins ringing night after night, the very last thing she wants to do is pick it up. And yet, she can’t seem to help herself…

Pasha Rivin’s trying to outrun fate. He’s been running from it for years now, but escape isn’t in his cards. As the oldest son of the oldest Roma family in the country, he’s not just a member of a proud and fiercely traditional clan. He is their reluctant king…and now he’s expected to find a wife.

The fiery redhead that shows up on his doorstep, following a trail of breadcrumbs, hunting for a missing little boy, is the last person Pasha’s mother has in mind, however. She’s an outsider, an intruder, and as far as his family are concerned, she’s not welcome on their land, let alone in their king’s bed.

Pasha has never allowed his destiny to stand in the way of what he wants, however. And he’s never wanted anything more than he wants the girl with the burning red hair.
