Review/Synopsis:

Review:

One of the BEST coming of age, new adult books I’ve read in a long time!

It brought back memories of my teenage years with a reverence and certainly made me wish I could go back in time and have a first boyfriend experience like Tate.

Tate Lemieux is the absolute best when it comes having a first boyfriend. He put his all into learning and making sure he gave the best experience to Audrey when the time was right to dive into learning each other intimately. He not only was adorable about asking questions, but in searching out his answers. This book was full of laughter and that first moment of passion, well, I felt butterflies in my stomach for the two of them.

Audrey has been in love with Tate for a few years, but afraid that he wouldn’t return her affections, she never said anything, instead remaining his steady friend. When Tate makes his own feelings known to her they comfortably switch into a relationship, but it’s only the knowledge that Audrey’s mother is sick and that Audrey’s future may now look different than it did just a short time before. How can Audrey ask for more from Tate when he leaves for college in just a few short weeks, when her own future hangs in the balance?

This book is so well written that my own face was flush over moments of passion, I truly felt like I was experiencing my first love all over again. I adored the relationship not only between Audrey and Tate, but also between Tate and his brothers. This is a book you don’t want to miss.

Blog Tour – A Bridge Between Us by K.K. Allen

“A breathtaking romantic experience that will have you on the edge of your seat. Allen delivers a poignant new adult must-read.” – Kandi Steiner, Bestselling Author

A Bridge Between Us, an all-new standalone small-town romance from USA Today bestselling author K.K. Allen is available now!

I had always known he wasn’t mine to keep, but that didn’t change the way I loved him—quietly, gently, and from afar.

As the seasons changed, the corn stalks grew strong, and the grapevines flourished with hope. But none of it mattered, not when the soil at our feet bound us in a century-old rivalry. We’d never even had a chance.

They said life flashed before your eyes on the way to death, but on that night, after my final scream burst from my throat and my world started to fade to black, I only thought of him. Of his sweet chocolate eyes, his desperately cautious stare, and his silence that carried more weight than gold.

I should have died that night. Instead, I crossed the moonlit bridge and never returned. I let rivalry win. If only that had been enough to keep us all safe. If only we didn’t have a bridge between us.

Excerpt:

She starts to move past me toward the record player when something strong and instinctual—something that feels like fate—gives me a hard punch in the chest. I grab her hand and pull her back to me. Surprised, she stumbles a little, and her palms break her fall on my chest. When she recovers, she meets my gaze, and I don’t try to interpret it. Instead, I move her arms around my neck, wrap mine around her waist, and start to move.

Her eyes narrow, but they have a glimmer in them. “Oh, so now you want to dance.”

I cringe a little. “I don’t think you can call this dancing. And to be fair, I don’t think you can call what you were doing dancing either.”

Not even her harsh glare can hide the amusement she finds at my joke. She purses her lips to hold back her laugh then swats at my chest before moving her hand back around my neck. “At least I was having fun.”

“Oh, I was having fun watching you. Besides, you didn’t seem to have a problem with my moves at prom.”

Her cheeks redden, and when my gaze slips down to her neck, I find that part of her skin is changing color too. She’s flushed all over, and I can’t help but get excited that I’m doing that to her.

“Yeah, well, you also bribed me with a dozen pink roses, a tent, and a pretty necklace, so we probably shouldn’t compare experiences.”

At the mention of her necklace, my gaze locks on her throat, even though I already know it isn’t there. When she picked me up from the jail, she wasn’t wearing it then either. The disappointment weighed heavily, and as much as I want to ask her where it is, I choose not to go there. I had no right to question it back then, and I still don’t. “Just give me a few minutes, and I can rectify all that.”

She smiles gently back at me, and the mood shifts from playful to serious. “You would, wouldn’t you?”

My heart pounds so hard that I can feel it between my ears. I cup her neck while slowly moving a finger across her cheek, and I glance at her lips before locking on her eyes. “I would do anything for you, Camila. That hasn’t changed, and it never will.”

She blinks, as if she can’t believe me. I drop my forehead to hers, and when her eyelids flutter closed as a shaky breath rushes past her lips, I know she feels the same.

“How does this feel so normal?” Her words are just a whisper. “I close my eyes, and it’s like I’m right where I’m supposed to be.” She shakes her head. “I don’t understand.”

“What’s to understand? Our roots are deep, just like your vines, which adapt to every season. No matter the harsh weather, there’s always new growth.”

“Are you comparing our relationship to the life of a grape?”

The teasing in her voice makes me chuckle. “No. I’m comparing us to a whole damn vineyard. We’re the root.” I lean in, brush her lips with mine, and whisper, “You and me, Wild One.”

A shiver racks her entire body, and I tighten my hold around her, as if it could help. The way she’s engulfed in my arms brings me the most comfort I’ve felt in years. Camila’s right. This feels so normal and natural, like we were always meant to fit.

I brush my lips against hers again, almost expecting her to pull away and tell me it’s too soon or too late. Either one of those responses would be understandable. But when her fingernails dig into my back, I don’t ignore the message. I mold my mouth to hers and kiss her hard.

Her firm lips respond to mine immediately, and she steals every bit of my air as she breathes me in. I explore the taste and feel of her like it’s the very first time. In a way, that’s exactly what this is. It’s been ten years since our lips last touched, and though I’ve dreamed about it, nothing could have prepared me for the real feeling of our mouths moving as one, our breaths tangling with heat and desire, or our hands wandering as our mouths keep a slow and steady pace. The kiss is so consuming and powerful that I feel an awakening within me. And when she parts my mouth with hers and sweeps her tongue over mine, a growl rumbles through me.

Excerpt

He wedged his large body beside me in the bed. On his side, he draped one arm across my middle, curling his other under his head.

I watched him out of the corner of my eye, completely unsure if I was supposed to cuddle into him or what the hell we were doing.

“This okay?” he asked. “You comfortable?”

I was a lot of things. Confused. Lost. Overwhelmed by guilt.

But because it was Camden, comfortable was one of those things too.

As an answer, I rolled toward him and buried my face in his broad chest.

His whole body sagged as he began stroking the back of my hair. “Nora. Nora. Nora.”

In a way, Camden and I were strangers, but as his heart played in my ear, I felt two puzzle pieces clicking into place. A calm washed over me. The dark cloud of my betrayals still existed outside of Camden’s embrace; it just didn’t seem so ominous anymore. He knew all the dirty and broken parts of me and still came back, holding me as though he could keep me together.

Sliding an arm around his back, I curled in close, shifting to tangle my legs with his. “I’m tired, Cam.”

“I know,” he whispered, hugging me tight.

“No, you don’t. Nobody understands. I’m a disease who infects everyone who gets close to me.” My breathing shuddered. “It hurts. Everything hurts.”

“Do you remember our first summer together when a grasshopper got into the container where we held the extra worms? You screamed so loud when you opened that thing and it came flying out like a bat out of hell. It got on your shirt and then hung on for dear life. With all the racket you were making, the damn thing had to have been terrified, but he never jumped off. I had to peel it off your shirt, one leg at a time.”

I gagged at the memory. “Thanks for reminding me of that. Awesome timing.”

He chuckled and pressed his lips to the top of my head. “I’m the grasshopper clinging to your shirt, Nora.”

Now, if that wasn’t some good old classic Camden Cole rambling, I had no idea what was.

I tilted my head back, resting my chin on his pec, and peered up at him. “You do realize I have no idea what you’re talking about, right?”

My cold, hollow chest filled with a warmth I hadn’t felt in years when he grinned down at me.

“I genuinely thought you’d find your way back to me. A phone call. A visit. Anything. But as time passed and I got older, I realized I fell in love with a girl who had no idea how to be loved.”

My stomach wrenched, and emotion made my vision swim. “Camden, I—”

“No, just let me talk. Hear me out.” He tucked a stray hair behind my ear and let his thumb linger at my cheek, sweeping back and forth. “I know you love me, Nora. It’s flashed in your eyes every time you’ve seen me since we were kids. It’s like every light in the house suddenly comes on, but it terrifies you, so you spend the whole time we’re together running around, turning them all off, convincing yourself that you don’t deserve for people to love you back. But we still do it. Joe loves you. Thea loves you. Ramsey loves you. I’ll always love you.”

A Bridge Between Us is a story between two families that began over a century ago, a long standing feud that runs deep, and the two children who weren’t born to understand the hate surrounding, but are continually pulled into the mess which ultimately destroys them over and over again.

Camila and Ridge come from opposite sides of the bridge that separates their land, but as children neither really understand the century old feud that exists between their families. Camila makes a promise to Ridge that when she takes over for her family in the future she won’t have hate in her heart and she will connect their lands and end the feud. While Ridge likes the idea of her promise, he also isn’t blinded by her fantasies. At a young age, he’s already had a tough life, losing his mother and moving in with the father he’s never met before.

This is a story that spans decades and goes through heartache, growth, and several tribulations. Even through Camila and Ridge may be soulmates they have a long, tough road throughout their entire relationship. There are outside forces that constantly push them apart. Not only a past filled with hatred, but an unknown mystery on their land and mix that with good ol’ fashioned stubbornness and Camila and Ridge’s story is full of angst and suspense.

Synopsis:

I had always known he wasn’t mine to keep, but that didn’t change the way I loved him—quietly, gently, and from afar. ⁣

As the seasons changed, the corn stalks grew strong, and the grapevines flourished with hope. But none of it mattered, not when the soil at our feet bound us in a century-old rivalry. We’d never even had a chance. ⁣

They said life flashed before your eyes on the way to death, but on that night, after my final scream burst from my throat and my world started to fade to black, I only thought of him. Of his sweet chocolate eyes, his desperately cautious stare, and his silence that carried more weight than gold. ⁣

I should have died that night. Instead, I crossed the moonlit bridge and never returned. ⁣

I let rivalry win. If only that had been enough to keep us all safe. If only we didn’t have a bridge between us.⁣

Reclaim
(An interconnected standalone)

Review/Synopsis:

Review:

The choices, the P.S’s, the creek, the worm business, and even the ten dollar bill…it is all so emotional!!

Nora Stewart and Freaking Camden Cole bring this coming of age story to life while also putting you through the emotional wringer. Reclaim is story about a lifetime of choices, it is also about reclaiming that piece of precious youth, that feeling of rightness when sandwiches, worms, and pinkie promises are more important than broken dreams.

Aly Martinez is sooooo good at playing with our heart strings and through Reclaim she does a fantastic job of it.

It’s a reminder that while as children we have this unburdened, carefree life, but it is also a life that is not their own. It is a life where adults make decisions for them, they don’t always understand the prejudices adults carry on their shoulders – children just see another child to play with. Nora and Camden spend years working to get back to this carefree feeling that they had one summer, the summer that they fell in love, but the feeling was so big and they were so small, they didn’t know it was love.

Reclaim is filled with a ton of emotions; it is sweet, and gripping, filled with angst, and also joy. It’s profoundly wonderful.

Prologue
Nora

Choices.

Everyone makes them.

From mundane and monotonous to life-changing and unimaginable.

But regardless what that choice may be, life is lived in the consequences.

People want to believe that decisions are weighted. In theory, “What should I have for dinner?” should fall on the opposite end of the spectrum as “Should I swallow this bottle of pills?” But in reality, even the smallest decision can change the trajectory of your entire life.

“Oh God!” Ramsey yelled, scrambling across the dirt road on all fours. I watched in the rearview mirror as he paused, hovering over the bloody and lifeless body, not sure which broken part to touch first. “No. No. No.”

I wanted to care. I wanted to be flooded with guilt and regret. I just wanted to fucking feel something again. Anything.

Instead, I sat there, stunned and utterly numb.

My brother’s mouth moved, fast and sharp, but I couldn’t hear him over the ringing in my ears. With shaky hands, I tried to open the car door twice before I was successful. My chest vibrated as a barrage of emotions ricocheted inside me, none of them able to escape. All of them slicing me to the core of my soul.

Or maybe it was only the remnants of my soul, because the rest of it had been destroyed long before that starry night.

I swung my legs out, my head swirling with the high of adrenaline, and I struggled to find even one breath of oxygen.

My brother was seventeen, but he looked like a man as he started chest compressions and rescue breathing. Curiously, I wondered where he’d learned that. Then I immediately wished he hadn’t.

It was pointless though. He was dead. I didn’t have to be up close and personal to know that.

“Come on, come on, come on,” Ramsey chanted, never giving up, just like the hero I knew him to be. “Breathe.”

That asshole didn’t deserve to breathe. He didn’t deserve anything. He’d already stolen it all from me.

“Stop,” I forced out.

Ramsey’s panicked gaze swung my way. “What the fuck happened?”

How much time did he have?

Wood splintering into my back.

Blink.

His fingers digging into my flesh.

Blink.

The welcomed darkness that swallowed me as my only way to survive.

Blink.

Thea.

Thea.

Thea.

“Let him die!” I roared so loudly that it scorched my throat.

But at least I felt that.

The sound of people talking in the distance interrupted my echo, and my brother’s panic skyrocketed. Ramsey quickly abandoned his attempts to revive him and raced in my direction, but just seeing him lying there, alone and lifeless the way I would always feel, gave me a sick sense of pleasure.

I should have been crying.

Why wasn’t I crying?

I’d spent two years living in fear—nightmares, sobbing until I physically passed out, hiding behind a smile for fear people could see the filth behind it.

Maybe there was nothing left of me to give. Not even tears.

The voices got closer, and Ramsey stepped into my line of sight, blocking out that monster the way I would never be able to do.

“You gotta go,” he barked. “I’ll take care of this, but you gotta go before someone sees you here.”

“I’m not leaving.”

He grabbed my shoulders and gave me a hard shake. “Listen to me. You have to leave. I’ll get the car and meet you back at the house. If anyone asks, you haven’t seen me. Tell them I’ve been with Thea all night.”

I could hear the words coming from his mouth, but I was struggling to process what he was saying. It was like an optical illusion: I could see the picture in front of me, but none of it felt real.

I glanced around and his car was still running, the front end smashed and covered in blood. “What if they see your car?”

“I’ll…I’ll… I’ll tell ’em I hit a deer or something.” He looked over his shoulder as three silhouettes appeared at the end of the Johnsons’ driveway. “Please, Nora,” he hissed. “I promise you this is going to be okay. But you can’t be here. If they find out what he did to you, they’ll know this wasn’t an accident. I can’t risk that. Okay? You weren’t here. Nothing happened. It was a terrible, terrible accident. End of story.” He palmed each side of my face and pressed a shaky kiss to my forehead.

That might have been more jarring for me than running over a man.

Ramsey wasn’t the most affectionate brother. We hugged on occasion, and when I was little, he’d always ruffled my hair or pinched me playfully on the side.

But he wasn’t a forehead kisser.

“Ramsey,” I choked out, the adrenaline starting to ebb from my system, a hurricane of emotions moving in.

“Please,” he whispered, his desperate and pleading brown eyes sparkling with unshed tears in the moonlight. “Just run home and get in bed. I’ll meet you there. Everything’s going to be okay.”

Okay. That was a word I recognized all too well. Not good. Or great. Or even fine. Just simply okay was a state of being for us.

Besides, Ramsey had never steered me wrong before.

So I squeezed his hand, and like a coward, I ran.

Choices. Everyone makes them.

But mine would ruin us all.

When the Stars Fall; Lost Stars #1
(A standalone within a series)

Review/Synopsis:

Review:

Be still my heart, I was emerged into Jude and Lila’s world from the very beginning and unable to pull myself out until the very last page. Broken up into three parts, this angsty, emotional, coming of age story was unputdownable.

Lila meets the entire McCallister family at the age of nine. This includes Jude who is more like a pebble in her shoe, but also who turns into one of her best friends. Isn’t that the way it goes when you are young and naive in the ways of the world of boys and girls. The boy you want to push into the dirt becomes the boy you want to push onto the mattress.

Not only is Jude one of her best friends, but he becomes the love of her life. However, their love story isn’t one of ease. It’s full of mistakes, trials, and hard knocks. Whoever said finding your true love at a young age would be easy?

Lila and Jude grow and change together, their love for one another always growing and changing, but not always together. (Men are dumb…okay, sometimes women are slightly ridiculous too, but mostly it’s always men. LOL) You will find yourself frustrated with both Jude and Lila throughout the story, but let’s face it, we all get lost in our own thoughts and let emotions and let life pull us into dark paths. Making wrong decisions isn’t easy, but most times it does help us grow as a person, but, it can also send us in a direction away from the people who mean the most to us.

While I completely appreciate that this was told in one book instead of three separate ones, I’m also more curious about the rest of the McCallister family. With that being said, this is labeled as book one so I’m hopeful that we will see more in the future on the other brothers.

Emery Rose is wonderful at angst and bringing all the feels and When the Stars Fall is a beautiful story full of every emotion.
