New Release – Falling Into Forever by Delancey Stewart

RELEASE BLITZ
Title: Falling Into Forever
Series: Seasons in Singletree #5
Author: Delancey Stewart
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: October 26, 2020
BLURB

I had it all. Killer job, to-die-for apartment overlooking the Hudson, and the successful, doting boyfriend.

Well, he was successful, at least. Guys who dote don’t break up with you via Post-It.

After that, I did the one thing I swore I’d never do. I went home to the smallest small town there is—a place so backward my family was still engaging in a hundreds-of-years-old feud with the Tuckers. Maybe it had evolved from the days of shooting one another to slightly more benign things, like filling family stores with crickets and moving a two-ton moose around town. But still.

This was not NYC.

It was meant to be a stop-over. But when one of the local little old ladies died suddenly and willed her dilapidated haunted house to me, things got complicated. Because she didn’t just leave the house to me. She left it to me and Michael Tucker jointly.

Because who doesn’t want to live in a haunted house with their enemy?

Only I’m not sure Michael Tucker is my enemy. In fact, he’s turning out to be kind of… hot. In a strong single dad kind of way.

And I’m not sure how much I really want to get back to New York City, anyway.

Falling into Forever is the fifth book in Delancey Stewart’s Singletree – a series of interconnected stand-alone romcoms that will charm you and make you swoon. It’s a book about haunted houses, making choices, and re-thinking the things we’ve been told about other people all our lives.

EXCERPT

I held the glass door open for my son, and together we climbed the stairs just inside the small entryway. When we reached the landing, I was surprised to find Addison Tanner standing just outside the suite we were looking for, looking a tiny bit lost. She wore slim jeans with a longer shirt, and something about the casual but put together look appealed to me, making me hope I looked okay. I realized it was dumb—it didn’t matter what this woman thought of me. That didn’t stop my hand from going to my hair though, hoping it wasn’t sticking up in thirty directions.
“Hi,” I said. “What are you doing here?”
Maybe asking that question wasn’t the right move. Her open expression shuttered, and her brows lowered over those dark sad eyes. Her mouth opened, but before she spoke, her eyes slid sideways to take in Daniel, and apparently she thought better of whatever she’d been about to say.
“I got a call from this guy, Anders about poor Mrs. Easter. I have a meeting with him at five.”
“Us too,” Dan volunteered.
Addison’s brows rose now, and she looked between us.
“Did you knock?” I asked.
She crossed her arms. “No, is that how these door contraptions work?”
Dan grinned, but I was not going to respond to that question. I could play the sarcasm game too, but since he was here, it was my job to model good behavior. I knocked on the door. Hard. The sound of my knuckles rapping echoed around the small space at the top of the stairs.
“Thank God you were here to take care of that. Whatever would I have done?” Addison said.
I bit my tongue, but I also had to hide a smile. I liked her fire. More than I should have.
Daniel was snickering, and I poked a finger in his shoulder to shut him up. I was about to knock again when the door behind us flew open to reveal a short round man with little round glasses perched at the end of his nose.
“Well hello there,” he said, looking between us. “I’m afraid Dr. Kelly goes home by five each day. No one home, as it were.” He chuckled and took a step back. “Just popped out to make sure you weren’t knocking on my door. I’m expecting folks.” He moved to close the door, and I was relieved when Addison piped up.
“You’re not Augustus Anders, by any chance?”
“Why yes, last I checked, I was indeed.” He smiled and dropped his eyes, rocking a bit on his feet as if he was bashful about delivering this news.
“We’re your appointment,” I told him. “You said you were in Suite 2A.”
“Oh, no. I’m in 2B.” He pointed to the clearly marked suite number on the door. He didn’t appear to be older than fifty or so, but I was starting to wonder if he might be losing a few marbles.
“I’m Addison Tanner, and this is Michael Tucker, and his . . . son?” Addie looked at me, uncertain.
“Daniel,” I confirmed. “It’s my week, so he had to come along.”
“Sorry to be such a burden,” Dan muttered.
“That isn’t what I meant, and you know it,” I told him. I could have phrased that better, but Dan knew how much I enjoyed having him.
Addie was smiling at him warmly, and even Daniel’s surly pre-teen heart seemed to feel the effects. “Nice to meet you, Dan,” she said. As my son smiled at Addison Tanner, a little twinge of admiration swelled in me for her. I liked people who spoke directly to my son instead of talking around him, like so many adults did to children.
“Well, well. Come in then,” said the lawyer. “Not sure why you didn’t just knock on my door.” He shook his head as if in disbelief at our stupidity. This was Mrs. Easter’s trusted attorney? I was becoming a little skeptical—he’d probably called the wrong people altogether. Of course Mrs. Easter did not leave anything in trust for me. She barely knew me. This guy had made a mistake—it appeared he might make them regularly.

New Release – Second Chance Spring by Delancey Stewart

RELEASE BLITZ
Title: Second Chance Spring
Series: Seasons in Singletree #4
Author: Delancey Stewart
Genre: Small Town Romantic Comedy
Release Date: April 1, 2020
BLURB

Paige Tanner grew up in the small town of Singletree—but she knows she has to leave to find what she really wants. Singletree might have other plans for her…

I did everything right—got engaged to my high school boyfriend, stayed faithful through college and med school, came home and got married. That was how I’d always thought my life would go. What I didn’t realize was that my husband wasn’t super clear on that whole monogamy thing.

Yeah.

Finding myself over thirty and divorced, living in the same small town where I grew up, I realized I needed a new plan. So I took action. I landed a job with a bigger practice in a big city where I’ll find more opportunities at work, and hopefully in my social life. I was ready to move on.

But when Cormac Whitewood and his adorable daughters come into my life, suddenly my big plans don’t seem so shiny and exciting. Suddenly, I’m finding myself drawn to the lonely widower, wishing for more time with him—even though he seems to have a strange fascination with exotic taxidermy. I can overlook a lot for a pair of deep golden eyes and strong broad shoulders.

The thing is, Cormac’s made it clear he isn’t over his late wife—and I’d never force my way into someone else’s family. And I’ve already made my plans.

So why do they feel so wrong?

Second Chance Spring is a full-length novel with an HEA about second chances, spring, and taxidermy. Okay, not really. It’s about the plans life makes for you while you’re busy making plans for yourself, and it’s full of snort laughs, touching moments, cake, and maybe a kangaroo or two.

EXCERPT

“How are you, Mom?”
She crossed her arms and swayed a bit, turning back and forth like a little girl. “Good, Cormac’s been keeping me company lately. Such a nice man.”
“He is,” I confirmed. I wanted to say something else, but didn’t know quite what, so instead, I asked for a pumpkin muffin. “And tea,” I finished.
“Actually,” Mom said, a little sparkle coming into her eye. “Come back here. I need your help with something.” She bustled toward the swinging door separating the kitchen from the shop.
“You want me in the kitchen?” I asked, coming around the counter. I hadn’t been planning on helping out with baking, but I guessed I could. I helped sometimes when things got busy or if Mom was baking for a special occasion. I glanced longingly at the pumpkin muffins, all orange and plump behind the glass, and then followed my mother.
“Yes, and oh, you know, I’m going to need another opinion too.” She pushed past me again, leaving me standing in the kitchen before a long metal table full of little plates with cookies and muffins cut into fourths all lined up. She’d clearly been planning this, and I wondered if she’d sprung into action, formulating her plan the second I’d texted her that I might stop by.
A moment later, she was dragging a confused-looking Cormac through the swinging door and pushing him to stand at my side. She went around the other side of the table and grinned at us both. “I need you to taste test a few things,” she said, and she wrung her hands dramatically. “I just can’t decide which of these I should offer as my Cherry Blossom special.”
Cormac laughed, a hint of discomfort in his voice. “What’s the Cherry Blossom special?”
I turned to face him, swallowing hard before I was able to speak as the full force of his presence hit me. “Mom makes a big deal out of the annual Cherry Blossom festival. She bakes like ninety cakes for the cakewalk, and she always makes a special cookie or muffin for the week of the festival.”
“So these are all cherry-themed?” Cormac asked, pointing at the assorted baked goods.
Mom clapped her hands. “Exactly!” But then she frowned. “But they’re not all cherry flavored,” she clarified. “Like this one is chocolate hazelnut because I have it on good authority that George Washington enjoyed a nice bit of Nutella now and then. You know he cut down a cherry tree.”
“Um,” Cormac said, and it seemed he might be about to question my mother’s ‘good authority’ about that Nutella thing.
“Best not to ask,” I suggested, leaning close to him with a stage whisper.
Mom shot me a narrow-eyed gaze, but then went on. “So the Washington cookie is here. This one is a cherry-vanilla blondie. This one here is the cherry crumb muffin, and that one is a Kahlua cookie.”
“Kahlua, Mom? What’s the cherry relationship there?” I asked.
She shrugged. “I had a bit of Kahlua back here for inspiration. I spilled a cup into the first batch, but they were so good, I went with it.”
“You drink Kahlua while you’re working?” Cormac asked, grinning.
“It’s my bakery,” Mom said. “I do what I want.”
Cormac burst out laughing at that. “As you should,” he told her.
“Okay, I’m leaving you to it. Come out and tell me which one wins when you’re done.”
And then Cormac and I were alone, faced with a long table of baked goods and my mother’s obvious and embarrassing attempts at matchmaking.
“If you need to get going, you totally don’t have to do this. She’s a little bit … manipulative.”
He laughed again, the sound rolling through me like warm sand churning under gentle waves. “I like baked goods, actually. And I like your mom.”
“She means well,” I agreed, looking up at him to find those gold eyes on me. I cleared my throat as heat rose to my cheeks. “She’s just always trying so hard …”
“To …?”
I couldn’t hold his eyes, so I picked up a piece of Washington cookie instead. I popped a piece in my mouth and then said, “to set me up.” I hoped the muffled words would be enough of an answer for Cormac to drop it and that he might have the grace to pretend he’d understood me. What I’d said had sounded a lot more like, “oo fett be aaa.”
He picked up a piece of muffin and shoved it between his lips and then mimicked me, saying, “I’m sorry, I didn’t get that last part.” But his words were closer to, “I arrrey, I ninny ett aa ass mar.”
I burst out laughing, bringing my hand to my mouth to keep from spitting cookie, and was relieved when Cormac’s shoulders shook to match mine, both of us laughing over a childish joke. But it took off the edge.
“She’s always trying to set me up,” I said, my mouth clear now.
He looked down at the table and then glanced at me sideways, that little smile lifting one side of his mouth again and sending my heart racing. “Your mom is trying to set you up with me?”
Oh man, this was embarrassing. “Yeah. But you can just ignore it. She does this all the time.” I popped a piece of cherry vanilla muffin in my mouth and chewed, leaning against the table. “She’s worried I’ll die old and alone, since my marriage failed.” He might as well know I was a withering divorcee, if he didn’t already.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” he said, looking back up at me. “I didn’t realize you’d been married.”
“My husband also pretty much had no idea he was married,” I told him, having long since moved past the hurt that came with Adam’s unfaithfulness.
“Oh no,” Cormac said, trying not to laugh.
“Yeah, it didn’t go all that well. I’m better off.” I shrugged.
For a minute, we just tasted cookies and muffins, comparing our opinions of each. And then, Cormac turned to face me again.
“Well, for the record,” he said, not quite meeting my eye. “If I were in a position to be set up, this would definitely have worked.”
It felt like the breath was sucked out of my lungs. What had I expected? That my mother’s ridiculous scheming would actually work? Of course, he had a girlfriend or something. “You’re not, though,” I said. It was only kind of a question. “In a position like that,” I clarified.
“I wish I were,” he said, and I almost believed him, based on the wistful tone of his voice.
I looked at my neighbor then, allowing my appreciation for his charm, his rugged good looks, and his clear affinity for family to color my voice. “I kind of wish you were too,” I said.

I’ll just admit it right up front—I don’t love the holidays.
In fact, Christmas makes me downright cranky.
Call me the Grinch if you must, but if your dad chose that day to decide he was wrong about that whole wanting a family thing, you’d grow up miffed about mistletoe too. Every candy cane, ugly sweater, and falalalala reminds me of the worst day of my life.
So when my uncle—a bigwig network executive—gives me one last shot to salvage my disastrous TV production career on a show called Holiday Homes, I’ve got no choice but to suck it up, head to the small town of Singletree, and fake festive.
The problem?
Callan Whitewood. The sexy, sullen former pro-soccer player might be the one person on earth who hates the holidays more than I do. After a devastating injury ended his career, he’s left with a limp, no idea what to do with his future, and a cheerless attitude worthy of Ebenezer Scrooge. But I’ve got a TIME LIMIT to convince the gorgeous grump to allow his home to be featured as the pinnacle of the Christmas episode of the show that’s going to save my career.
That is, if I can keep my hands off him… but I’m having a bit of trouble sticking to the task.

SHAKING THE SLEIGH is a standalone holiday romantic comedy with a satisfying happily ever after, plenty of festive chuckles, some sexy times and a few chinchillas. Maybe a cat. (And there might be a wombat because wombats really do fit into almost any story.)

Christmas:  a time of joy, a time of celebration, or – if you’re April Hall – a time to studiously avoid any tinsel-strewn, glitter-soaked, candy-cane striped venues like a devoted hermit who studied under the attentive tutelage of the Grinch himself.

April Hall is not a fan of the holidays, thanks to her dad choosing that day in seven-year-old April’s life to decide that he didn’t want a family after all. Now the holiday felt like a glaring reminder of the worst day of April’s life.

But when her uncle—a bigwig television network executive—gives her one last shot to salvage her disastrous career on a show call Holiday HomesApril has no choice but to suck it up and get festive.

The problem? Beyond the obvious, of course—that the town of Singletree, which is featured on the show, is so into the holidays that they literally change the name of the town to Christmas Tree for the month of December—is that there is one house meant to be the pinnacle of the Christmas episode. And the homeowner isn’t planning to even put up a tree.

Nope, Callan Whitewood isn’t feeling Christmasy at all. The former pro-soccer player suffered a devastating injury that ended his career with the South Bay Sharks, and pretty much wrecked his vision of what his life was supposed to be. Now he’s a nobody with a limp and no real idea what to do with a future that was supposed to be about the only thing he really loved—soccer.

Callan moved to Singletree to get away from every reminder of who he had once been—who he was supposed to be. (Who he still wanted very much to be.) He also moved there because the only family he has—his brother and his two nieces—live there.

But Singletree proves to be less quiet and private than he’d hoped. A bright and shiny television producer pops into his life—and breaks into his house—before he’s even fully moved in. And before he knows what happened, both their lives are turned upside down.

Can April convince Callan to allow her to film his house for the show that is supposed to save her career? Can Callan accept that his own career is over and move on to something new? Can either of them handle the sheer amount of holiday cheer strewn across every free surface in the town of Singletree?

SHAKING THE SLEIGH is a standalone holiday romantic comedy with a satisfying happily ever after, plenty of festive chuckles, some sexy times and a few chinchillas. And maybe a cat. And there might be a wombat because wombats really do fit into almost any story.

This book has no cheating, no cliffhangers, and absolutely no pigs.

New Release – Happily Ever His by Delancey Stewart

RELEASE BLITZ
Title: Happily Ever His
Series: Movie Stars in Maryland Duet #1
Author: Delancey Stewart
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: August 15, 2019

BLURB

Tess was used to being in the shadows. But when movie star Ryan McDonnell pulls her into the spotlight, her whole world is threatened. Can a relationship that starts as a secret fantasy ever survive in the real world?

My sister Juliet has always gotten everything she wants.

It’s fine though. I never wanted the spotlight. That was my sister’s domain. And now that she’s America’s most popular starlet? She can have it.

But when Gran—the feisty woman who raised us, and who I cannot seem to wean off video games, an afternoon doobie, or her daily Manhattan—has a huge party to celebrate her 90th birthday, Juliet brings the Hollywood madness straight to Maryland.

In the form of my ultimate movie-star crush, Ryan McDonnell. I can barely form a sentence around the guy (at least I don’t still have a poster of him on my wall). And I definitely can’t get over the fact that he’s Juliet’s new boyfriend.

I just need to get through the weekend with them—and with the magazine people who are covering them and the party for a feature. I just need to stay away from Ryan and his warm curious eyes, his perfectly chiseled arms, and the impossibly sexy things that come out of his mouth when we’re alone together.

It’s only one weekend, and I just need to remember that Ryan is an actor. A good one. Because I almost believe him when he tells me we have a chance together.

EXCERPT

TESS:

My sister slid from the back seat of the car looking every bit the movie star she was. I hoped everything was going to meet her standards. The security guys had looked around the property for God-only-knew what, and asked me questions about our alarm system (nonexistent), our security perimeter (also nonexistent) and our emergency evacuation CONOPS (seriously? Once they explained what a “CONOPS” was—a concept of operations, in case you’re wondering—I explained that was also nonexistent).
My big sister Juliet lived in a world I could barely begin to understand, where movie stars were people you actually knew. People like Ryan McDonnell.
Sigh. Deep, lovelorn sigh.
My sister had never really belonged here, and she didn’t fit in any better now, with her huge dark glasses and slim-fitted pink capris and high-heeled sandals. The second I saw her, I felt myself inching toward invisibility again. I loved her, but my life worked better when Juliet wasn’t standing at my side, begging the world to wonder how two sisters could be so different.
I pushed down my own insecurities and smiled at her.
“You look great,” I told her. It was true. She always looked great.
“Hey,” she said in that breathy voice she’d become famous for. She pulled me into a tight hug, smiled at me, and then took a step back, ducking her chin a tiny bit as she said, “I want to introduce you to someone.”
A pair of long jean-clad legs slid out of the car behind her, attached to a broad tall body that I already knew too well was Ryan McDonnell. I was more than familiar with this particular ‘someone.’ He’d been my on-screen crush forever, though I hadn’t seen him in anything lately. There had been a movie I hadn’t seen—one that hadn’t done too well, but it included zombies, which were not my thing, even if you added in Ryan McDonnell hotness.
The object of my movie star affections had bright blue eyes, perfectly tousled dark hair—cropped close now, I noticed—and a body that appeared to have been carved from stone, or so I’d thought in the last role I’d seen him in as a comic book hero reimagined as a dark avenger. God, he was hot.
“Tess?” My sister’s voice cut through my stupor.
“Sorry,” I said, shaking off the dreamy haze. “Yes.”
“Yes?” He asked me, a smile spreading slowly across the perfect lips I couldn’t stop staring at. He chuckled, and I realized he hadn’t asked me a question. Embarrassment surged inside me, making my stomach churn.
“No,” I said, covering my affirmative declaration with an equally unnecessary negative word. “Or, I … um, hello.”
“I apologize for the short notice,” Ryan said letting my idiocy slide. People probably acted like loons around him all the time. I tried not to look at him, but there were parts of my body that were not listening at all to my brain. Ryan’s smile was like a speeding train coming right at me and freezing me to the spot where I stood, stupid and dazed. “I hope it’s not an inconvenience having us both here,” he said.
I watched his perfect full lips as he spoke, almost unable to process the actual words. I was having trouble being human, thanks to his actual existence right in front of me.
“Sure,” I said, my voice higher than I remembered it being.
More answering questions no one asked. My sister was smiling at me, shaking her head. Juliet knew about my long-time Ryan McDonnell affliction, and it was pretty obvious at this point. I hated that she undoubtedly knew I was flustered just trying to form actual words around her new boyfriend.
I forced myself back to sanity.
“Can I help get your things?” I had no idea if it would be weird to acknowledge his status as my favorite actor or if it was rude to pretend I had no idea who he was.
I settled for a moronic silence on the topic.
Juliet put her arm around me. “You don’t need to get the bags,” she said lightly, as two of the men from her security team emerged from a second car, all black T-shirts and muscled arms pulling suitcases from the trunk.
Of course not. My sister had people for that.

Cover Reveal – Movie Stars in Maryland Duet by Delancey Stewart

COVER REVEAL
Movie Stars in Maryland Duet
Author: Delancey Stewart
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Cover Design: Jaycee DeLorenzo

#1 Happily Ever His – Release Date: August 15, 2019

#2 Happily Ever Hers – Release Date: September 5, 2019

Juliet Manchester was America’s best-loved movie star. But her real life doesn’t quite match up to what we see on the screen. When she goes home for a weekend to celebrate her grandmother’s birthday, she asks fellow star Ryan McDonnell to pose as her boyfriend to help divert the press from the scandal brewing in her backstory — but the farce just may ruin her one chance at something real.

Jace Morgan was a Marine, and working as a bodyguard to the stars was a great way to make enough money to finish his degree and take care of his mom and brother. But he never planned to develop feelings for his client. And getting involved with her might put everything else in his life in jeopardy.

New Release – Scoring with the Boss by Delancey Stewart

RELEASE BLITZ
Title: Scoring with the Boss
Series: Mr. Match #4
Author: Delancey Stewart
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: May 9, 2019

BLURB

Mr. Match has the formula for love. So why is he still single?

MAX:

Being Mr. Match has been fun. And while it’s nice that thousands of couples have found love thanks to me, that was never really the point. The one guy I most wanted to match?

Doesn’t have one.

Now the vultures are circling, and it won’t be long before all of San Diego finds out exactly who I am. And then the questions will begin. Why hasn’t Mr. Match found his match?

If I answer that one, it’ll discredit everything Mr. Match is, and call into question all the matches I’ve made so far. It’s time to step away.

But when the venture capital analyst arrives to help divest me of the business, I’m starting to wonder if love really is as easy as a mathematical formula. Because Tatum Archer does something to me that defies logic and confounds reason. I feel feelings for her, even though the algorithm says I shouldn’t.

Have I been wrong all along?

TATUM:

My life was set. Divorce, check. Kickass job, check. Enormous dog… well, okay, that wasn’t part of the plan, but Charlie is my sidekick now and I’m okay with that.

A weeklong trip to San Diego to help set up the sale of a matchmaking business sounds like just the kind of challenge I thrive on. I just didn’t expect Mr. Match himself to be quite so…

Arrogant.

Frustrating.

or HOT.

When my manager suggests I take over the company and stay in San Diego temporarily, it makes perfect sense from a business perspective. But getting involved with a client would be the end of everything I’d spent years building.

We have to keep things professional. Max assures me we’re not a match anyway.

So why can’t we keep our hands off each other?

* * *

Tatum Archer doesn’t date clients, and Max isn’t signing up for a romantic liaison that hasn’t been mathematically guaranteed.

So why can’t he stop thinking about Tatum? Or about her ridiculously enormous dog, Charlie? Not that he’s thinking about Charlie romantically, of course. But the dog is part of a package deal. And maybe he’s thinking about Tatum a little bit romantically…

The final book in the Mr. Match series sees Mr. Match finally find his own match! Don’t miss the laughs in this hilarious series finale!

EXCERPT

It was time to take a step back from Mr. Match before I had to answer a bunch of questions I didn’t want to answer. Before the whole thing blew up and then tanked spectacularly because I was revealed to be a fraud. And so naturally, I had a plan.
“You’re going to sell Mr. Match?” My sister Cat was lounging on the leather sofa in the middle of my living room. “It’s a goldmine! Why would you do that?”
I shrugged. “Maybe I’m tired of finding happiness for everyone else.”
Cat’s eyes dropped to the ring on her left hand and then found me again. “Max,” she said quietly, looking sad.
“No,” I said quickly, sorry I’d let too much show. That wasn’t my style. “It’s fine. It’s not even that. The whole secrecy thing is exhausting, and I think I’m pretty close to being outed, which would be bad for the business. Bad for me. And probably bad for the Sharks, too.”
“You won the Cup last season, it would take a lot to hurt the Sharks,” she said.
I stood just outside the sliding glass door that separated the living room from the patio and yard. My house was nice—big and open, lots of upscale touches and fancy appliances. But it felt cold to me, despite the almost constant San Diego sunshine, and I spent a lot of my time out on this patio. Less oppressive than that unfilled space. “Why do you care if I keep it, anyway?” I asked, turning to look back inside.
Cat shrugged and stood up, coming out to join me in gazing over the grass beyond the patio toward the fence, which sat just along the curve of Mission Bay. The Isleys lived a few doors down, though I swear we didn’t plan it that way. “I don’t know,” she said. “It’s nostalgia, I guess. You always talked about figuring out how love wasn’t this complicated mystical thing. And then you did it. I just thought it would mean something to you, even if you never …” she trailed off, glancing at me and then sinking into a cushioned chair next to the teak table.
My sister was one of the few people I’d confided in about my efforts at finding a match of my own. I’d been one of the first complete profiles in the database, but my file had sat there, gathering dust, for years now. The algorithm was built to match and weigh the most crucial aspects of someone’s personality, giving mathematical priority to those aspects statistically most likely to correlate to longevity in relationships. I’d tweaked the math multiple times over the years, and tons of happy couples all around San Diego, Los Angeles, and now Arizona, had benefited. But I had not.
Cat sighed. There wasn’t much to say about my unmatchability.
It turned out I was a fucking unicorn. And not the fun rainbow-maned kind with a cat riding on its back like a Viking conqueror, throwing glitter around. I was like a sad gothic unicorn, horn draped in black crepe and too much guy liner.
“Are you thinking about that ridiculous unicorn analogy again?” Cat asked, interrupting my train of thought.
“Maybe.”
“You’re not an emo unicorn, Max.”
“Gothic. With guy liner.”
Cat rolled her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest. “I have a novel idea for you.”
“No.” I historically didn’t like Cat’s ideas, novel or not.
She dropped her arms and leaned forward in her chair, widening her eyes at me and blowing out a breath in frustration. “Listen first, jackass. Then tell me no.”
I lifted a shoulder in resignation. “Fine. Go.”
“Why don’t we go retro? You can be a retro unicorn.”
“I have no idea what you’re trying to say. Use your words, Cat.”
“Those were words.”
“Use different words. Ones that go together to make sentences that make sense.”
“Listen,” she said, rolling her eyes. Cat and I couldn’t help reverting to grade-school banter when we were together. It was our dynamic. It drove Mom crazy, but when Mom wasn’t around, we reveled in it. “Why not try this dating thing the old fashioned way?”
“You want to order me a bride in the mail?” I imagined a stagecoach rolling in, a frightened-looking Midwestern girl coming down off the steps in a hoop skirt. It turns out I have a very visual imagination. I do best when I keep my little imaginings to myself though.
“No. Not like wild-west style. More like before the internet.”
“They definitely didn’t have the internet in the wild west,” I agreed. I wasn’t eager to see where Cat was going with this. Distraction could work.
“Stop changing the subject. Distraction won’t work here.” Cat stood up. “I met an adorable girl at the gallery last week, and I got her number. You set me up on dates before I met Xavier, so now I’m setting you up.”
“Definitely no,” I told her. “And I set you up on dates that had a high mathematical probability of working out successfully. That’s how you met Xavier, remember?”
“Yes, but first you gave me Dr. Buttchin.”
I smiled as Cat’s description of that date came back to me. The formula had needed tweaking back then. But you had to hand it to a guy so germaphobic he’d managed to find a place to buy condoms to put on the passenger seat of his car. “Still. Definitely no to the setting-Max-up thing.”
“Definitely yes, you mean.” Cat had her phone out and was texting someone.
“Stop. I’m serious.” This was not at all what I wanted. I stood and went to look over my sister’s shoulder, but she’d already hit send.
“Her name is Julie. She was adorable, very inquisitive. You guys are probably perfect for each other.” Cat smiled like she had just achieved world peace.

ERICA:

Signing up for a matchmaking service was not my idea. But when Andrew the hand model dumped me, my brother suggested I try Mr. Match. And I figured it couldn’t hurt–as it was, I’d never get away from meathead moron soccer players (since my brother plays keeper for the South Bay Sharks and I manage PR for the team.)

But Mr. Match is a moron too because he matched me with a guy I see at work every day. A guy who has a different girl on his arm at every turn. And a soccer player. Fernando Fuerte, the “Fuerte Fire,” is one guy I can assure you is NOT my match.

FERNANDO:

Getting girls is not a problem. Getting girls who care about something besides my status as the South Bay Sharks star striker, my salary, and my social status? Yeah. That’s the problem. So when my buddy Max tells me he’s actually Mr. Match–the secret proprietor of San Diego’s hottest matchmaking app, I let him convince me to try it.

And Erica Johnson is not actually a bad match–only she doesn’t seem to agree. And then there’s the small matter of her being in the middle of trying to save the team (and me) when the owner’s ex brings to light some, ahem, unsavory accusations about me… and then there’s her enormous and disapproving twin brother…and there’s something about cheese, too.

But if I have my way? Erica will definitely be my match.

Cameron Turner is cursed. He’s lost almost everyone he’s ever loved, and he knows better than to try again. If the universe intends for him to be alone, then that’s exactly what he’ll do, keeping to himself in his quiet Kings Grove cabin.

Harper Lyles was born in the tiny mountain town of Kings Grove, and she never planned to go back. But when her life is turned upside down and she has no choice, she vows to make the best of it. For six short months at least, and then she’s on to bigger and better things.
