About the book:

Everyone always says the best way to get over someone is to get under somebody else. Well, I guess I’ve never been one to believe it. Cheated on by my football-star boyfriend and betrayed by my closest friend, I’m not looking for yet another chance to get hurt.

Kye Collins isn’t just a guy. He’s 𝘵𝘩𝘦 guy. A star on a D1 football team. The owner of a panty-melting smile and abs that’ll have you fanning yourself and tingling in places you shouldn’t. Oh … and he’s my brother’s best friend.

When he convinces me to hang out with him, I warily take him up on his offer. After all, as long as I keep my guard up, I won’t get hurt. Besides, a friendship between a male and a female can work, right?

What starts off as an innocent alliance becomes dicey when he suggests we fake date. It seems like a good plan. A solid scheme to help him get his mom off his back while also making my ex mad. If I can hurt the guy who caused me pain and make the mean girls at school jealous, that’s a double win. Plus, hanging out with Kye Collins is fun.

One kiss—that’s all it takes. A kiss only meant for the eyes of those who hurt me. A kiss that’s supposed to be a big F you to those devils lurking in the shadows, watching my every move. But that same kiss makes me come alive in a way I never have. Makes it impossible for me to ignore that feelings I have whenever he is around. And it forever changes the relationship between Kye and me.

Sometimes, tragedies bring people closer together, but in our case, it pulls us apart. But when Kye runs, I’m not far behind, ready to catch him.

Review – Catching Kye by Hannah Gray

Catching Kye; Florida East University #3
(An interconnected standalone within a series)

Publication Date: December 1, 2022

Genre/Tropes: New Adult/Friends-to-Lovers/Sports/Fake Dating/Forbidden Romance

Author: Hannah Gray

Review Rating: 5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:
My favorite couple in this series!

Kye and Winter may be forbidden to date, but their relationship begins as friendship and these two are just fun with a whole lot of flirty added in. That is until they cross that thin line of friends into lovers, but even then their steam is infectious, even with the secret aspect tossed in. However, their story isn’t all hearts and laughs, there is an underlying darkness that, probably because the initial story is so light and fun, carries a heavy weight and really broke my heart when it hit.

Kye is funny, a total jokester filled with sassy comebacks and a ton of innuendo. He befriends his best friends younger sister, Winter, after her boyfriend cheats on her with her best friend. Kye is feeling a little left out himself as Dane and Bama are dealing with their own issues, so stepping up to befriend Winter isn’t totally selfless, but he also hates to see her struggling and completely heartbroken over losing so much. It doesn’t hurt that he’s insanely attracted to her as well, but he also knows Bama would murder him if he crossed a line, so friends it is while Winter gets her groove back. He just never expected that he’d need her as much as she needed him.

The ending was spectacular and it was absolutely the perfect way to close out the series for these three friends.

Synopsis:
This is the third and final book in the Florida East University series. This is Kye’s story.

I never imagined that one night could end the friendship Beau Bishop and I’d had since birth and sever all ties between our families. Especially when less than an hour prior to that tragic accident at the racetrack that night, he had confessed his love to me under the bleachers. A bond I’d thought could never be broken was smashed to smithereens in an instant.

He left Alabama, hightailing it to Florida without so much as a good-bye.

Two years later, we’ve crossed paths again. Only he’s no longer known as Beau Bishop. No, now, the boy that I’ve been in love with my entire life is called Bama. And Bama is a cocky, closed-off jerk.

As much as he tries to push me away, he should know how persistent I am when it comes to something I want. Losing is never an option. Just ask all of the guys I’ve raced to become number one.

Getting everything I’ve ever wanted is finally so close I can almost reach out and grab it. But you know that saying—waiting for the other shoe to drop? Yeah … well, those words were always in the back of my mind. Knowing it seemed too good to be true to finally have Beau Bishop in the palm of my hand.

And I was right. Because once again, I was alone.

Sometimes, fear makes you do stupid things when it comes to the ones you love. We were a walking example of that.

This is book two in the Florida East University series.

Review – Stealing Bama by Hannah Gray

Stealing Bama; Florida East University #2
(#2 within a series)

Publication Date: September 1, 2022

Genre/Tropes: New Adult/Sports/Second Chance Romance

Author: Hannah Gray

Review Rating: 4.5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:
At the heart of this new adult romance, is a story about forgiveness. Everyone makes mistakes, minor ones all the way up to major ones that you can’t take back and alter the course of your life, but everyone has the power to forgive and it’s up to you whether you decide to live with anger, grief, and resentment or forgive not only yourself, but those around you.

Beau “Bama” Bishop and Mila Hardy grew up together. Their father’s were best friends, along with their mothers, they were next door neighbors and business partners. Basically it was inescapable when one wanted to go somewhere without the other, that is until the day that Beau’s father was killed in a car accident. An accident that Mila’s dad survived. Needless to say all of their lives changed and Beau blamed the Hardy family and broke all ties. Soon after they moved not only away as neighbors, but out of state. Mila’s first crush made a statement loud and clear, but she is a girl who doesn’t take rejection quietly. Beau has been attending Florida East University and that’s where Mila has her sights set for college. Bama Bishop better watch out, Mila is racing in hot on his tail.

I waffled back and forth on these two while reading. There was a lot I liked about them, but there was also a lot I didn’t. While I understood the grief and resentment that Beau held onto and seeing Mila only brought on the memories of the night his father was killed, I wasn’t always thrilled about how Mila went about gaining his attention. This is a girl who is fearless on the racetrack and some of her antics just seemed a bit childish. However, when these two moved past the juvenile behavior, their deeper moments truly resonated and flushed out who they were as a character.

Stealing Bama does cross timelines with other books by Hannah, but this book can be read as a complete standalone.

Review – Playing Dane by Hannah Gray

Playing Dane; Florida East University #1
(#1 within an interconnected series)

Publication Date: June 1, 2022

Genre/Tropes: Past-Trauma/Sports/Secret/New Adult Romance

Author: Hannah Gray

Review Rating: 5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:
An angsty, emotional romance that is also fun and steamy and everything you’d want in a new adult book.

For two young adults, both Dane and Layla, they have already had a rocky life, but they are also both excellent at hiding their pain. When they first meet they have an instant connection, but distance doesn’t make it easy for these two to see one another and Layla is a stickler for the rules that whatever they decide to jump into is a non-relationship.

Dane Wade is super sweet, but also lost when he meets Layla. It’s hard to tell if he’s replacing his past hurt with a rebound, but it doesn’t take long to realize that when Dane falls, he falls hard and fast and he easily falls for Layla. He plays along with all of her rules because he’d rather have her for a non-relationship than never at all. His compassion and understanding of all of her triggers is swoony. He’s a total keeper, unfortunately Layla has all of these rules for a reason.

Layla is, I hate to use the word broken, but she’s been damaged by a past that was not hers, but by the environment she grew up in. Her trauma runs deep and it keeps her from enjoying a lot of things, like Dane, but when they come up with an agreement to a no-strings non-relationship…unbeknownst to her she finally begins to heal. Actually they both do, but it might be too late.

Playing Dane is an interconnected book, but this was my first time reading anything by Hannah Gray and I was able to jump right in to this world with absolutely no problem.

Blurb:
Dane Wade is a breath of fresh air. Sexy, charming, and with abs that could melt any woman’s panties. With my rules and boundaries in place, he is the perfect person to have fun with to pass the time. As long as he knows it will never amount to anything more. Which he does … I think.
But then boundaries get shattered. Lines get blurred. And I know it’s time to bolt before things get harder and I risk falling deeper. Running away is the only thing I know how to do. And in my twenty years on this earth, it’s worked for me.
They say you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. They’re wrong. I knew what I had all along. I just couldn’t accept it.
And now … he might be gone for good.
One thing is for sure: it’ll take more than an apology for him to want me back. But saying I’m sorry is a good place to start.
