Review:

A sweet return to the Bayou in Blake’s charming town of Papillon, LA.

Lexi Blake’s Bayou world is a slow stroll down charming neighborhoods and visits with old friends. It’s a vacation from the intense adventures of her Masters and Mercenaries world, but still just as enjoyable. The characters are well written and the entire plot is flushed out. It’s a place I enjoy revisiting time and again.

Papillon is a small town where everyone knows everyone, but in times of need they all rally together to lend a helping hand. It is certainly how Rene became so close to Sylvie’s family growing up even given their economic differences, in a town their size those differences didn’t matter in the eyes of children looking to play. As time wore on Sylvie developed a huge crush on Rene, but their age difference allowed them to grow apart, now with time and distance out of the way there is nothing holding them back aside from a cavern of years between them. They have to learn about each other all over again, but this time there is a ticking time clock working against them. Rene now has to marry to save his company and time is literally not on his side. When will they ever get a break?

It took a little bit to jump into the chemistry between Rene and Sylvie, but once they clicked the story really took off. I’m not talking about heat between the sheets either, I’m talking about their spark, their flirting, their mutual “I want you, but I can’t have you” vibe. It was like the zipper was off track at first, but it didn’t take long before they became unstuck and then zipped together, if that analogy makes sense.

There is a bit of a mystery that goes along with this story. The element of “who is behind the mask” is always fun to figure out while the characters are sorting out their feelings for one another. A sweet romance, with a bit of intrigue, to add to any summer reading.

Review – Waylaid by Sarina Bowen

Waylaid; True North #8
(An interconnected standalone within a series)

Publication Date: July 20, 2021

Genre/Tropes: Small Town/Intrigue/Contemporary Romance

Author: Sarina Bowen

Review Rating: 5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:

ALL THE THINGS!!! I was not expecting this story and it was so much better than what I anticipated.

Rickie and Daphne’s story begins like any typical boy lusting after a standoffish girl. It’s adorably cute with tons of chemistry, but then dun…dun…dun we get to the heart of the story, these two have met before, but Rickie doesn’t remember because he has amnesia from an accident. This is just the tip of the iceberg of where these two begin their amazing story.

To say I was blown away by how this story was woven together is an understatement. Each layer that was added I was knocked out of the park. Rickie and Daphne’s lives have been waylaid by circumstances out of their control, but when destiny has a path in mind sometimes it just takes another path to reach the same destination.

Waylaid is full of chemistry, emotion, but also a mystery that had me peeling back information through each chapter I read. I loved how the past and present was woven together to piece together their journey and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. Their friendship, chemistry and bond grows throughout this entire story and what they share. It is a great book!

While this book is part of the True North world, it can be read as a complete standalone.

Synopsis:

It’s a tale as old as time: the bad boy meets the good girl. He makes a daring proposition. Then the boy gets a mysterious head injury and loses a year of his life…

The first time I meet Rickie, I don’t know what to make of him. The second time we meet, he doesn’t remember the six hours we spent together. Or standing me up afterward.

I’m not the same, either. I’ve got secrets. I’ve told lies. Bad boys aren’t my type, anyway. Even the ones with troubled gray eyes.

But now we’re roommates. Cue the awkward moments in the hallway when he’s wearing only a towel and a smile. He’s determined to win me over, and his talented hands weaken my resolve.

It’s all fun and games until my past rears its ugly head and his secrets come to light, shaking our fragile connection, maybe even breaking it…

Note: this is Daphne Shipley’s story. Contents include Vermonty ice cream flavors, nerdy awkwardness, tattoos, and a playboy grandpa.

Review – Sawyer by Siobhan Davis

Sawyer; Rydeville Elite #6
(#6 within a series)

Publication Date: June 30, 2021

Genre/Tropes: MM and MF/Intrigue/Dark Romance

Author: Siobhan Davis

Review Rating: 5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:

The Rydeville gang is back and so are the Elite secrets. Sawyer is a book full of suspense, intrigue, and dark themes, but more importantly it’s a story where love and acceptance is truly the underlying theme.

Sawyer Hunt’s story has been brewing for awhile and with his cool personality and bi-proclivities in the bedroom it was hard to say exactly how his story would play out once it arrived. After reading Sawyer, I couldn’t have been happier with how it all ended and what is still to come for the Rydeville group that just gets bigger in their happily ever afters.

Everyone is back from the Rydeville series; Abby, Kai, Jackson, Nessa, Drew, Charlie, Demi, Xavier, and Sawyer, and a new addition Sydney. Everyone pitches in to help solve more Elite involvement that is not only hurting the Hunt’s tech company, but hurting Sawyer and by association Xavier Daniels.

I love every single moment that takes place on the page with anyone from Rydeville. For example; witnessing the love between Abby and Kai from the POV of Xavier, who has no trouble calling Kai out on his caveman tendencies, it is funny and completely endearing all at the same time. OR, attending Jackson and Nessa’s wedding through the POV of Sawyer it is also romantic and a little heartbreaking all at the same time. Sydney too is drawn into the Rydeville world and envies what Sawyer’s friends have. She may be new to this world, but she quickly will grow on you.

This entire series is best read in order and enjoyed when you know the world and its inhabitants. For the most pleasure I would recommend starting at the beginning of the series before jumping into Sawyer.

There is still more Rydeville to come with Drew getting his own book and the Anderson boys aren’t quite finished yet either. The Rydeville Elite will return and I’m looking forward to more from this world.

Synopsis:

Torn between duty and desire…

Sawyer Hunt has always been confident with his place in the world. He knows what he wants, conceals his painful truths behind a mask of cool indifference and keeps his circle small. The only person who has ever come close to smashing through his inner walls is the one person his parents will never accept.

Xavier Daniels is sick of being Hunt’s dirty little secret. When he fled the ugliness of his past, he swore he would never again hide who he is. Or let anyone hurt him or make him feel ashamed. So, discovering the man he’s in love with is engaged to some mystery woman devastates him. Forced into making the only decision he can, Xavier locks up his heart, determined to keep Hunt out for good.

Sydney Shaw is the bane of her father’s existence. But he’s finally found a way to end her rebellious streak—marry a virtual stranger or be cut off forever. Hunt could be a great husband, if he wasn’t such a cold, moody jerk and she wasn’t still hung up on the guy who broke her heart at fifteen.

Marrying Sydney to save his father’s company is a sacrifice Hunt will make because he suspects the elite is involved, and it’s up to him and his friends to stop them. With his heart also on the line, Hunt is determined to end the threat quickly or risk losing the one person he now realizes he can’t live without. Consequences be damned.

Sawyer is the sixth book in the Rydeville Elite world, and it is recommended to read the previous books in the series first. This romance contains MM and MF scenes, in addition to some dark themes/references. There is no menage. It is recommended for readers aged eighteen and older. Ends with an HEA for the chosen couple.

Review – Lachlan in a Kilt by Anna Durand

Lachlan in a Kilt;The Ballachulish Trilogy #1
(A standalone within a series)

Publication Date: June 22, 2021

Genre/Tropes: International Holiday/Male POV/Age-Gap/Intrigue/Contemporary Romance

Author: Anna Durand

Review Rating: 4.5 Gold Stars

4.5 stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:
I don’t get many chances to read all male POV books, especially with a swoony accent. Lachlan is all that and a bag of chips, especially in his kilt.

Lachlan MacTaggart is visiting America and house swapping with a friend when he sees the bonnie lass next door.  Erica Teague enchants him from day one, but he’s only in America for holiday for a month and definitely not looking for a long term relationship, but when he meets Erica at a club he decides to approach her and at least try a short term engagement. Setting up boundaries, rules, and knowing that he is leaving should help any long term feelings, but things get a bit more complicated as time moves forward.

Told completely from Lachlan’s POV, I loved all of the brogue, Scottish slang, and Gaelic terms that he continually used. I’m a huge sucker for an accent, so I adore reading them. I especially appreciate when the translation or definition is closely provided since I’m also a huge fan of learning as well. Lachlan is quite the sexy Scot, but he’s damaged by his past relationships, hence why he’s not looking for anything long term even if he was staying long term. He’s a bit older than Erica, so he takes that into account, but it doesn’t hold him back in the end from actually getting what he wants, into her knickers.

There is an ever present mystery surrounding Erica, but a large part is due to this book being told from Lachlan’s POV. Most of the plot is centered around the good times in the bedroom and not necessarily the actual bedroom times itself. Allow me to clarify…remember this book is strictly told from a male POV and what do men think about 95% of the time…I’m sure you can guess. The other 5% Lachlan basically is living his life; taking phone calls, handling business or just day to day things. His mind is truly occupied with the female form; how to please it, where to please it, what to do with it… you get the idea.

This is my first book by Anna Durand and I truly loved her walk with a Scotsman.

Synopsis:

He’s hot, Scottish, and dangerous — to a woman’s heart.

Get ready for Lachlan MacTaggart’s story, coming in June 2021! Whether you’re a longtime fan of the Hot Scots books or you’re new to the series, you’ll love getting Lachlan’s version of Dangerous in a Kilt (Hot Scots, Book 1). Originally written from the heroine’s viewpoints, now the first three Hot Scots will be reborn and retold from the perspectives of the heroes themselves.

Review – Red Thorns by Rina Kent

57729648. sy475

Red Thorns; Thorns Duet #1
(#1 in a duet)

Publication Date: June 10, 2021

Genre/Tropes: Book Duet/New Adult/Intrigue/Dark Romance

Author: Rina Kent

Review Rating: 5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:

Dark, dubious, and with a splash of mystery that kept those pages turning! I love how Rina mixes intensely dark moments while still pulling at emotional heartstrings. She is the queen at pushing boundaries and it will bring me back to her books time and again.

Sebastian and Naomi might be one of the most twisted couples I’ve ever read, but I love that they get one another from the very beginning. Naomi and Sebastian see the darkness that lives under the masks they wear around everyone else and that darkness calls to the other. While their relationship begins on a bet it gets super intense rather quickly and the bet becomes almost background noise, along with their families. The intensely heated scenes are completely consensual, passionate, and while they are dark, it made me happy that these two young people found their kink together at such a young age. There is also a mystery that winds through the entire story that ends on a huge cliffhanger, I can hardly wait to see how that plays out in the next book!

Lastly, I want to address that while Rina does warn that this book is dark, I’ll be redundant and say that it’s extra dark. However, I do hope that readers don’t kink shame Rina for writing a couple that pushes boundaries. What Sebastian and Naomi do and how they do it is intrinsic to the story, but take those triggers seriously if extra dark isn’t in your wheelhouse. Now, me, I love a good story and Rina Kent is an amazing writer. Red Thorns is just the first part of this dark tale and I’m looking forward to what’s coming next.

Synopsis:

A bet turned into a disaster.

Sebastian Weaver is the star quarterback and the college’s heartthrob.
Rich. Handsome. Bastard.
Everyone’s attention flocked toward him and all the girls dreamed to be with him.
Not me.
At least, not until he made a move on me.
See, I thought I was stronger than Sebastian’s charms.
I thought I could survive being his target.
I thought wrong.
Little did I know that he will make my most twisted fantasies come true.
Fantasies I didn’t know existed…

Red Thorns is a dark new adult book that contains dubious situations some readers might find offensive and/or triggering.

This book is part of a duet and is not standalone.
