Successful model Bliss Gault is known for her smile and her sunshiny attitude. The youngest child of rock legend Steven Gault, everyone sees her as the flaky, flighty member of the family. And why wouldn’t they, when she has a habit of getting in and out of messes by the skin of her teeth? But when she returns to Lake Bittersweet for her sister’s wedding with an international mess in tow…this time, she might be in over her head.
FBI Agent Earl Granger is in Minnesota to help an old Army buddy, using “head of security” for Bliss Gault as his cover. Within seconds of meeting her, the stunning blond is making him crazy with her whimsy and her sage-burning. He’s a gruff, fact-focused professional. There’s no way he’s letting her distract him from his real purpose—discovering the identity of his father. She can save the smiles and seduction act for someone else.
But fate has something very different in store for these two total opposites. From international mayhem to a passion they never saw coming…some seductions are impossible to resist.

Review:
A return to the small town of Lake Bittersweet for romance, a wedding, and lots of twists and turns.
Bliss Gault is known for her beauty and flighty personality while FBI Agent Earl Granger is the total opposite of her on a lot of issues, but the further I read and the more I dug deeper into these two and peeled back their layers, Bliss and Granger were more alike than they probably would ever admit. First similar quality, stubbornness.
Now let’s continue….
Bliss has lived most of her entire life in front of a camera and considering she’s jetsetted around the world, she still has a sweet innocent heart. She has also been alone, which is the downside of fame. Everyone thinks they know you, but no one actually does.
Granger recognizes some of that aloneness in Bliss almost instantly. Same recognizes same. He sees underneath her false fronts, the fake smiles that she displays to the world, or the ditzy stereotype she throws up to put people at ease, just as much as she notices the world around her. Bliss is quite the beautiful contradiction and Granger can’t help but be drawn in by it. Does he try to stay away, yes, but is he pulled right back in, also yes.
As an FBI agent Granger is trained to notice his environment, but he quickly learns that Bliss does the same. Together they both keep things very close to the chest, that’s what happens when you are used to being alone, but as time fades it will take opening up, which is the worst form of torture for these two…give them anything else…and they just might have a solid future together. They will figure it out. I’m sure. 😏
I loved Granger’s dry wit and Bliss’ sassy humor. Together they really were fun. They understood one another in a way that no one else did. I love that for two people and it makes the reading super enjoyable. This was a well loved return to Lake Bittersweet.

Review:
A totally fun read with Bernard’s emotional and suspenseful touches throughout.
Gina Moretti is passionate, feisty, and full of spirit. I loved her character, her family, and especially her and Kirk together. For everything Gina has been through in her life, she is full of spunk and super sassy. The perfect partner for a hero like Kirk, although don’t let Kirk hear you call him that – LOL.
Kirk Williams came back to Lake Bittersweet after his last hero save to mend what he didn’t expect was to run into Gina Moretti, his best friend’s little sister. She was all grown up and gorgeous and he couldn’t take his eyes off of her. However, Gina was currently in the middle of a date when he first laid eyes on her and it just happened to be one date in the potential of many. The entire town was in on setting Gina up and it didn’t take long before Kirk wanted to be the only one she was dating.
Gina and Kirk were a ton of fun to read, surrounded by a great cast of characters. Just enough emotion and suspense to add to this wonderful story.

Review:
Sweet, sweet, sweet with just a dash of bittersweet made The Fling a perfect reading romance.
The Fling is filled with super sweet moments, lots of giggle out loud times, reflective moments, steamy occasions, steamy times that also included laughing-which are my absolute favorite things to read or participate in…okay TMI…but seriously, when you meet the person you can laugh with in ALL occasions, that is truly your person.
The Fling included every possible element I love to read in a swoonworthy book and I couldn’t put it down for even one moment!! This book is a fated destiny, grumpy-sunshine, opposites attract kind of romance and I loved every page.
Conor Gault is a total workaholic and has worked hard to be the total opposite of his rockstar father who was a rebel in just about every aspect of his life. Conor spent the majority of his formative years with his socialite mother and she worked hard to keep him on the straight and narrow, but when Emmaline meets Conor in Hawaii, not while he’s on vacation mind you, his life is irreversibly changed when he spends the afternoon in her presence.
Now remember how I mentioned that Emmaline and Conor are destined…well what a small world that these two would meet in Hawaii when she’s from the small town of Lake Bittersweet and Conor is sort of from there as well, at least his famous father is.
It’s just a fling…that’s what they both agreed to…no identifiers, nothing that would give them away, just a lovely afternoon spent between two strangers. Fast forward six months and Conor is back in Lake Bittersweet settling his father’s affairs and who happens to appear like a beautiful Hawaiian dream? The woman who hasn’t left his thoughts.
Conor and Emmaline are absolutely delightful together. This entire story, with their family and friends made my heart sing, especially how Jennifer wrote about Henry. My heart overflowed so many times when he was on the page.
The Fling is fun, but it’s also a great story of growth and change, like if you are a workaholic who might need to take a breath.

Review:
I tore through this book, couldn’t put it down, and then was extremely sad when it was over. Why must I suffer the sadness of loving and reading a really good book too fast!?!?!
Trixie Tran is by far the most fun, bright, shiny and just made me smile character Jennifer has ever written. I have adored her as a secondary character and she is A-MA-ZING as a main character!!! She’s a that bright ray of sunshine that you want to see if you lived in Lost Harbor and the perfect partner to her more stoic single dad main lead, Mac Brindisi.
He’s new in town, there just for the summer and with him is his seven year old daughter, Piper and while she’s super cute, Mac as a single father is absolutely precious. Mac is former military, hence his formal and sort of uptight ways, but Trixie is just the medicine for him to break out the rare smiles that he normally saves just for his little girl.
While Mac is there on a job contract, he also turns out to be the perfect man to help Trixie out of a jam when her unfortunate past glides into port. Whoever would have thought the perfect flavor would show up in her ice cream shop and it wouldn’t be cold and kept in her freezer.
This entire book is so fun, I seriously never wanted to leave. Like all of the Lost Harbor books, there is adventure and intrigue thrown in, with some sensitive topics this time around. I don’t want to gloss it all over with the bubbly fun, but at the end of the day, Trixie and Mac are coming out on top as my favorite Lost Harbor couple.
I can hardly wait to see what’s next because this mix of Alaska and Minnesota friendships has been a great blend.

Carly Gault. The girl who got away. The girl he gave away. The moment he sees her, Fire Chief Thomas Cooper is hurled back in time to the summer that changed his life. Review:
Every book Jennifer Bernard writes contains a beautiful love story, from beginning to end. What she also adds is an intriguing plot, a wealth of friendships, and sprinkled throughout her small towns she brings a closeness that makes me treasure where I live and where I come from. But most importantly Bernard centers at the heart of every story, wonderful characters that fall head over heels in love.
Each and every element I listed above is contained in The First Love, a new series about a small town located in Minnesota. All new characters, although for fans of her books you might catch a few favorites showing their faces, who center around a summer camp and the friendships made from those nostalgic moments in time. This is a story about the love made and lost, and the experiences they’ve had during those teenage summer-best years- time of their lives/growing pains kind of moments.
The First Love encompasses a lot of ground, since it also peeks at several secondary characters, but that’s to be expected as this is the first book. Thomas and Carly start off this series with a second chance at love, winding us through the present and past in this unique telling of bittersweet moments.
These two had a lovely teen age romance, but it only lasted one glorious summer. Broken hearts left them with years apart, but now they have nothing but distance between them. When Carly loses her father she finally returns to the small town where she first fell in love and to the place where Thomas ripped her dreams to shreds. He’s now the town fire marshall and even though he’s in charge of keeping the town safe from flames, there is a ton that spark up between these two.
I’m really looking forward to where this series is headed as more couples find their happily ever afters. Bernard always brings the emotion and captives me with all the intriguing plot. This series is looking to be fantastic.

Super cute, funny, and full of small town charm with a touch of mystery.
Lulu Spencer-Bennington is super quirky and totally owns her personality and oddities. It’s her adorable personality that Tristan Del Ray finds so charming when he finds Lulu stowed away on his ship. This couple had me laughing from the very beginning and the story was delightful from beginning to end.
Lulu escaped from an anchored cruise ship birthed in Lost Harbor and hid on Tristan’s ship for protection. Lulu’s quirky personality made Tristan laugh, something he hadn’t done in quite some time, which is one reason he felt protective of her, but that was just one reason in a very long list regarding Lulu.
Tristan was barely back to fishing after having brain surgery and he still was trying to get his footing on his life. Tristan is well liked and has always been personable, but after his surgery he feels…sometimes not like himself. Lulu makes him laugh and she actually needs his help and even though she may be a stranger he feels compelled to help her and purposeful for the first time since his injury.
First Kiss Before Frost is so much more than just two people falling in love, it’s a story about trusting yourself and finding your place even if you think you may be a little lost. Lulu and Tristan share laughter and trust in this adventure through Lust…I mean Lost Harbor and I was laughing through a lot of tears right along with them. It’s the perfect addition to one of my favorite small town series.

Lost Harbor is coming home, going to a family reunion, or reconnecting with your best friends. I love returning to every every adventure and love story in this world and never want to leave.
Like Alastair Dougal, I fell completely in love with Ruthie Malone. She is stinkin adorable, with her own unique quirks, a woman with a love for books, a seeker of truth and a love for history. Her best friend, Alastair, accepts her for all of her uniqueness, the same way she sees past his grumpy Scottish demenur.
She returned to Lost Harbor with a new purpose. Working hard to brush off all her past shyness, to not be the old Ruthie, she now runs the new museum and begins her quest to seek out the answers to how Lost Harbor was founded. She never imagined while seeking the truth that the little town she loved would end up in a huge uproar. Poor, sweet Ruthie as she seeks her truths, not everyone is kind, but the townspeople also unleash some shocking revelations.
While Alastair originally came to Lost Harbor seeking answers, he’s stayed longer for the people. There is something about the small town and one adorable redhead in particular that draws him in again and again. Even when his past comes calling, Ruthie is there by his side. Their inside jokes are so cute, their understanding of one another, their friendship, everything that brings them closer is so endearing….I truly loved them together.
Another wonderful hit in this Lost Harbor series, but can be read as a complete standalone.

MISCHIEF AFTER MIDNIGHT by Jennifer Bernard is out now! Check out the gorgeous new contemporary romance and grab your copy today!
Title: Mischief After Midnight
Author: Jennifer Bernard
Genre: Contemporary Romance
About Mischief After Midnight:
A sizzling “brother’s best friend” standalone in the Lost Harbor, Alaska series
Bartender Toni Del Rey is the quick-witted queen of the Olde Salt Saloon, famous for trading barbs with grizzled fishermen and putting rowdy customers in their place. Independent and fearless, she’s only ever lost her cool over one man—the childhood crush who got away. These days she sticks to the F’s: friends, fun, and fu…well, you know. But now Bash is back, and more crush-worthy than ever. Worst of all, he just bought the Olde Salt, which makes him her brand-new boss.
Bash left Lost Harbor long ago to become a professional fighter—and to forget his nightmarish childhood. He’s only back to return a favor, but when he sets eyes on Toni, he may never want to leave again. His best friend’s little sister has gone from tomboy to tempting, from mischievous to maddening—a fact he can’t ignore while they work side by side at the Olde Salt. But between Toni’s fierce independence, his reputation as “Bad News” Bash, and a few deep dark secrets, they’re hardly suited to anything lasting.
Then again, you never know what a little mischief after midnight will lead to…
Trembling between anger and vulnerability, she’d never looked more beautiful to him. Her wide eyes seemed to take up half her face, her thick lashes damp with tears. She’d been through a terrible twenty-four hours, after all. And now he’d added to it, which was the last thing he’d ever want.
“You can jab me with that cactus if it’ll make you feel better.”
She looked at it as if she’d completely forgotten it was in her hand. “Excuse me? That’s no way to treat a perfectly innocent plant.”
He smiled, hoping that her joke meant she was feeling better. “Are cactuses innocent, though? With all those spikes?”
“It’s cacti, not cactuses, and don’t you dare disrespect mine. I’ve always related to this little guy. We have so much in common. There’s the liquor connection. The South American origins. The prickly exterior.” Her voice caught and he couldn’t bear it any more.
He strode toward her and caught her in his arms—gingerly, because she still held that cactus. “Toni. I’m really fucking sorry I ever made that bet. I’d rather gnaw my arm off than hurt you.”
She trembled against him. He felt her long, fine-boned legs press against his thighs. His brain hazed over, and all he knew in the entire world was her. Would she believe him? Know he was being real? That he wasn’t playing some kind of game with her?
“Really?” she muttered from behind her cactus. He lowered his head so he didn’t miss a word. “Do you mean the right one with the really great uppercut? Or the left one that sometimes drops and leaves you exposed?”
He looked down at her, then took the cactus from her hand and set it on the desk. Cupping her head in his hands, he scanned her face. That Toni bravado undid him. Even when she was injured, hurt, confused—she kept her sense of humor.
His heart gave a slow, helpless somersault, an upside down roundabout turn that left him somewhere very different when it was over. It left him at her mercy. Completely and hopelessly.
“Both my arms. And my legs. All the damn body parts. You can have them. Just tell me you’re okay. Tell me you forgive me.”
She blinked at him, looking a little stunned. “It matters to you that much?”
“That much. Yes.” Was all his pent-up emotion showing on his face? He didn’t care. He wanted her to know how much this meant. Cautiously, braced for rejection, he tilted her head and lowered his mouth to hover above hers. “Are we okay?”
“I’m still quitting the Olde Salt,” she whispered. The movement of her full lips riveted him. He wetted his own lips because his mouth had just gone dry.
“I don’t care about that,” he said harshly. “I just want to know that we’re okay. You and me.”
He caught her rough swallow, the shift of the muscles in her slim throat. Then another soft whisper.
“We could be better.”
“How? What can I do? Just tell me.”
“Take me to bed,” came her answer.

Fall in love with Alaska while falling in love with Toni and Bash. I was giggling and deeply sighing while rapidly flipping pages over this adorable couple so I could watch them fall in love even faster.
I love falling in love with the town over and over again, but even more with each couple that finds their couple match up. Toni and Bash are absolutely perfect and so is their story!
There is almost nothing better than when a childhood crush finally gets fulfilled. For me, those are one of my favorite and fully satisfying romance stories to read. Toni had a huge crush on her brother’s best friend, Bash Rivers, from the moment she knew what a teenage crush was. Unfortunately, in the ultimate definition of the word, Bash crushed her teenage heart when he left town years ago and he ultimately took her heart with him, unbeknowingly. Toni’s kept every relationship superficial up to that point, but when Bash comes back to town as much as she’d like to reexamine those old feelings…well…Bash is now her boss, perhaps it’s time to take a look at her life and the next phase of where she wants to go. It might be time to unfriendzone some people and take a long hard look at what she wants.
Bash owes a lot to Sally, the owner of the Olde Salt Saloon, along with the Del Rey family. When Sally decides to retire Bash can’t pass up her offer, but more than that he wants to visit his best friend, Tristan, who recently had an accident and even see Tristan’s tagalong sister, Toni. It’s been a few years since he’s actually seen Toni and once he does he likes what he sees, but things are complicated, even with the intense chemistry he feels brewing between them. She technically works for him now, she’s also the sister of his best friend who is still recovering from a serious accident and lastly, but no more important, Bash doesn’t know if he’s actually going to stay in Lost Harbor for good. Ignoring all his feelings and emotions is best, until he no longer can.
Some of my favorite parts of this book are when either Toni or Bash are in the Saloon. The patrons are hilarious, especially when Bash is first learning. They give him grief, in the best way that a small town knows how. Toni of course knows everyone, and even though Bash should since he grew up there, it’s been over a decade since he left and new people come and old people go. That saying that as much as things stay the same, things also change. Toni and Bash are perfect together for that very reason, especially in a local hangout.
I get giddy anytime someone new pops up wondering whose story could potentially be next. I seriously could never get tired of returning to Lost Harbor. Fan for life here.

Title: Flirting with Forever
Author: Jennifer Bernard
Genre: Contemporary Romance
About Flirting With Forever:
A standalone romance in the Lost Harbor, Alaska series …
Dr. Ian Finnegan knows all about brains; hearts, not so much. He’s ready to find the perfect match, someone as logical and sensible as he is. When the matchmaker he’s hired suggests he improve his seduction skills, he’s not sure where to turn—until he plucks a damsel in distress from the side of a snowy Alaska highway. She might be a “hot mess,” but Chrissie Yates could be just the fun and flirty tutor he needs.
Chrissie hasn’t been back to Lost Harbor since her eccentric recluse of a grandfather sent her away at the age of seventeen. Her family now consists of her beloved yellow lab and her broken-down car. Why Gramps has left her his property, she has no idea. She hopes to get in and out as quick as she can, but reconnecting with old friends and her quirky hometown makes her yearn for something she didn’t know she needed. Then there’s the sexy newcomer…
Flirting lessons turn to something more passionate, as Chrissie makes Ian feel things he never dreamed. Is it possible he had the wrong idea about who’s right for him? Can he put his new skills to good use … before a deadly storm threatens all he holds dear?
She slammed into someone, and looked up to see none other than Dr. Ian Finnegan, his horn-rimmed glasses knocked off-kilter by their collision. “Gotta go. Medical emergency.”
“Oh no, I’m fine,” Ian said quickly. One hand held a clipboard, the other settled on her shoulder. “Are you okay?”
“Yes, it’s just…” She drew in a breath. He looked good. Damn good. He also looked worried about her. He wasn’t even fixing his glasses because he was tending to her first.
She reached up to adjust his glasses for him, but he was in the midst of transferring his clipboard from one hand to the other, and managed to bonk her on the head at the same moment she pushed his glasses. “Ow,” she said as her hand jerked. The unfortunate timing meant that instead of putting his glasses to rights, she knocked them all the way off his face.
“Crap,” she exclaimed. “I’m so sorry!”
He dove to grab for them, but they landed on the floor with an audible clunk. How heavy were those glasses? His clipboard went next, slithering from his grip as he focused on the glasses. It too clattered onto the floor.
“Let me help,” she began, but he held up a hand to stop her.
“Please, there’s no need.”
She took a step back, feeling foolish. A sound came from her phone. Damn. She’d never ended the call with Toni. Wincing, she brought her phone to her ear.
Toni was laughing so hard she could hardly get a word out. “What did I just hear?” she gasped. “Was that the handsome Dr. Finnegan?”
“You shouldn’t eavesdrop. I’m hanging up now.”
“I know there’s something going on between you.”
“I told you already what’s going on.”
“Yeah well, you didn’t tell the whole story. What I just heard was a throwback to teenage Chrissie, the one who always lost her cool around a boy she liked.”
“Hanging up now.”
“You can hang up, but you can’t hide.”
She hung up and shoved her phone into the pocket of her flight suit. Ian finally had his glasses back in the proper place, and his clipboard under his arm, and was putting himself to rights.
“I’m really sorry about that, Ian. Chaotic Chrissie strikes again. Are your glasses okay?”
“They’re fine. You?”
“I’m fine. Embarrassed, but fine. I was on my way to get a hot chocolate, can I make it up to you with a hot beverage that I promise not to spill on you?”
“I’m on my way to a consult, but maybe later?”
“I only have another,” she checked her watch, “ten minutes.” She stepped aside to allow him to pass. “I don’t want to hold you up any more than I already have.”
“No, it’s…you didn’t…I’m glad I…” The words seemed to bunch in his mouth, and he shook his head in frustration. “I’ve been hoping I’d…you’d…”
She saw in a flash that he was affected by her presence. Stammering like a teenager.
A sense of joy seized her—and freedom, as if bright wings were lifting her out of gravity. Without a second of forethought, she rose onto her tiptoes and kissed Ian on the mouth. His lips were warm and firm and fresh.
For a micro-moment, it seemed he wasn’t going to respond. Too surprised? Unwilling? Uninterested? Various scenarios flashed through her brain, then evaporated as he returned her kiss—and then some.
Ian might be awkward in some areas, but when it came to kissing he didn’t hesitate. He kissed her as if nothing else existed, as if there were no nurses hurrying past, no hospital walls around them. They could be floating above the roof, alone in their own private helicopter, for all the notice he took of the snickering orderly pushing a gurney past them.

Review:
A fun, flirty return to Lost Harbor and the people I love in that small Alaskan town.
No matter how often I return, the people Lost Harbor always bring a smile to my face. This book in particular was extra light and Chrissie and Ian had great chemistry right from the get go making their interactions fun and always flirty.
While Ian always felt awkward around people, he found a great ease every time in the presence with Chrissie. Something about her easy going personality makes him light up and open up, something that he often struggled with on a personal level. Hence, his hiring a matchmaker to find the perfect woman for him and then going a step further, once he finds such an easy rapport with Chrissie, asking her to teach him how to flirt.
Upon returning to Lost Harbor, Chrissie finds a hero, well – thanks to Ian’s adorably charming and spirited nephew, Bo – Ian rescues Chrissie from the side of the road when her car breaks down. Their chemistry is instant, but Chrissie has no plans to settle back down in Lost Harbor, so no matter how much Ian and Chrissie are attracted to one another neither make a move to act on it, but Chrissie agrees to help him and their friendship grows.
I absolutely adored their relationship and didn’t mind that it was a slow burn. Ian’s awkwardness was so adorable compared to Chrissie’s cute chaos that their chemistry just flowed off the page. I really enjoyed his open and honest personality which made her relaxed and open up even more because of it. Between them there were no games which made their relationship blossom and grow and in turn also made both of them so likeable and their story was really refreshing to read.
Lastly, I loved how supportive Ian was of his nephew, Bo. Their relationship is one I wish more people had not only with their own relatives, but with the world in general. Bo is so magnetic and I loved him every time he popped up on the page. You’ll also get visits from lots of old characters and some new ones as well. Lost Harbor is always a joy to return to.

Title: Head Over Heels for the Holidays
Author: Jennifer Bernard
Genre: Holiday Romance
About Head Over Heels for the Holidays:
Is he the cure for her holiday heartbreak?
Ever since her ex-boyfriend dumped her on Christmas Eve, the holiday season has been tough for Maya Badger—especially since Lost Harbor, Alaska, pulls out all the stops for the holidays. Sure, she could focus on her police work and her father’s recovery from heart surgery. But when her dad’s home healthcare nurse turns out to be her childhood buddy—all grown up and the stuff of her naughtiest fantasies—she may have a solution to her holiday blues. After all, Jay-Jay always was the perfect playmate!
Rune Larsen hasn’t been skinny little Jay-Jay in a long time…not since he and his teen sister were forced to change their names to avoid Cara’s stalker. Taking a job in tiny, remote Lost Harbor seems like the perfect way to stay one step ahead of danger. The fact that his childhood friend is the town police chief is a bonus. Not to mention the fact that Maya has grown into a beautiful bronze goddess. Hell, even her serious cop side is a turn-on…though he’s up for the challenge of bringing some fun back into her life.
In fact, if they can navigate a stalker, a runaway yak, eleventy-billion holiday parties and a criminal investigation into the dark side of Lost Souls Wilderness, Rune just may convince Maya to fall head over heels for the holidays…and beyond.
Without thinking too hard about it, Maya rose to her feet and grabbed Rune by the collar of his jacket, pulling him close. “How about a fake kiss?” she asked quickly. “Just make it look good from a distance.”
He flashed her a pirate grin and cupped her face with his free hand. “My pleasure. I’m an excellent fake kisser.”
“Come on, hurry.”
He bent his head over hers, but he still didn’t go for the kiss. “You can’t hurry a fake kiss, or it will look fake. We’re flirting, we’re completely caught up in each other, we don’t even care that we’re drifting on the open ocean. Keep looking at me, just like that except without the ‘what the hell are you talking about’ expression.”
She smothered a laugh and relaxed her face into a dazzled smile. As if Rune was the most wonderful thing in the world, better than chocolate and bubble baths combined.
He blinked, as if she’d momentarily thrown him off his game with her smile. A personal triumph, she figured.
“That’s…good,” he said, a little more strained than before.
For a fake kiss, he sure was overthinking it. They needed to get this thing done.
She took command and wrapped her hand around the back of his neck. Tugging him down, she offered him her mouth. “Let’s do this,” she hissed. “Tick-tock.”
Honestly, why did she always have to be the one with any common sense? If those men onshore had binoculars, they were already watching. To throw them off, she only had a few moments. If the men thought they’d been busted, they might rework their entire comms system. The lead would be worthless. The source would be burned. The case back to square one.
And then all thoughts of logic flew from her mind as Rune claimed her lips with a kiss that sent shock waves through her system. Warmth…sizzle…sunshine…all of it swirled together in a rush of brilliant pleasure. His lips were firm and generous at the same time, as if they were inviting her into his world. A world where she would be queen and he would be whatever she needed.
A kind of exhilaration swept through her and she parted her lips for more. He gave it to her, sweeping his tongue inside the cave of her mouth, where every surface tingled and warmed at his touch.
Fake kiss, my ass.
This was the real thing and she couldn’t get enough of it. She drank him in as if she’d been starving for this, pining for it. Her mind—always working, always on guard—let go like an anchor releasing her to drift on the current. She lost herself in the flood of pure physical joy.
She staggered as the boat got slammed with a supersized wave. Rune held her tight so she didn’t lose her balance. “I need to steer this thing,” he murmured against her lips before turning back to the helm.
“Yes. Yeah. Of course.” She ran her tongue across her lips, tasting salt from the spray and sweet from Rune. She plopped down onto the bench as he wrestled with the wheel. Picking up her binoculars, she focused on the spot where the two men had been.
They were gone—or maybe her angle had changed and she couldn’t see them anymore.
She dropped her glasses and sighed. Hopefully she hadn’t messed anything up by making them suspicious. “Go ahead and pick up speed. Let’s keep going toward Mount Sage for a bit.”
“Roger that.”
Was his voice a little gruffer than usual? Was it the effect of the salt in the air?
He put the boat in gear and they cruised farther into the bay. She watched the little cove as it receded into the distance, swallowed up by the greater landscape of forests and rugged outcroppings.
What now? How to handle this? She and Rune had kissed, and there was no way she could forget about it the way she had when she was a kid.
Maybe never mention it again?
Or maybe do it again?
The tempting thought hovered out there like the promise of an ice cream sundae after a long week. Treat yo-self, she could imagine her cousin Reecie in Anchorage saying. Go for it, Kate would urge. I knew it, Jessica would say.
“Tell me when you’re ready to head back,” Rune said. “It’s your call.” His voice had returned to normal. She wondered what he was thinking about this situation. Then again, he didn’t overthink things like she did. He probably wasn’t worried about it at all. He probably kissed people all the time—all those non-girlfriend “girls” he’d talked about.
“I will,” she told him. “Give it a few more minutes.”
“The other thing is your call too,” Rune said softly, his attention still on the choppy water ahead.
“What are you talking about?”
“I know you’re trying to decide what to do about that kiss. I can see your wheels spinning from here.”
“I’m not—okay, I am. I didn’t intend for it to be like that.”
“It’s my fault.” His voice shifted to a jaunty cheerfulness. “My pride was hurt that you forgot the first kiss. I was aiming for ‘best kiss.’ One that you wouldn’t forget. That’s all.”
It wasn’t all. She could hear it in his voice. It was so much more complicated than that. Friendship, attraction, sizzle…all that, lined up against her better judgment. But even so, it touched her that he was trying to make the whole thing easier for her.
“Best kiss? Isn’t that a little arrogant?” She adopted a teasing tone to match his.
“Second best? Third? Just tell me it wasn’t the worst. Gotta start somewhere.”
“It wasn’t the worst.”
That was as far as she could go right now.
And maybe it was the best. Because right at this moment, she couldn’t think of any other specific kiss that might compete with it.

Maya Badger – yes!! We finally have the police chiefs story and it was perfect for the woman who protect and serves the residents of Lost Harbor, Alaska.
Maya has been the stoic background hero who always follows the rules and never lets her weaknesses show. Waiting for her story has been a joy and also agony. Who would be the man to bring the police chief to her knees because nothing seems to phase Maya Badger. Reading Maya’s story and learning more about her background we come to find out that, yes, she always has been an overachiever and that is no surprise, but underneath the hard exterior is a girly-girl who may just have been waiting for her Prince Charming, or her naughty nurse, to arrive in Lost Harbor when the holiday season was right.
Rune Larsen and his sister Cara have been on the run for the past couple years trying to outrun a stalker that has been making Cara’s life very unpleasant. When a home healthcare nurse opening becomes available for one Harris Badger, Rune recognizes the name from his childhood and jumps at the opportunity. The fact that it’s listed in Alaska is also a huge plus to stay ahead of the stalker. When they step into town and he meets the police chief, Maya, it’s a huge sigh of relief that it’s his childhood friend is on the side of the law and for the first time in a long time that he feels somewhat safe. Not only is he happy to see his old friend, but something else is stirring inside that could be considered more and it has nothing to do with the holiday spirit.
Rune and Maya are able to rekindle not only their old friendship, but new sparks are flying as they began a relationship as adults. While both of them agree to embark into something light for the holiday season, it doesn’t take long for their attraction to deepen into something more. While they both know Rune could leave at any moment if the stalker appears, it’s hard to evade the fall.
Rune’s lighthearted jokes about the holiday happenings in Lost Harbor was fun and super enjoyable, while Maya finding her joy for the holidays again was very uplifting. If you are looking for either a holiday boost or ideas for your own holiday party Head Over Heels for the Holidays will give you both.
Also in case you were wondering, the mystery surrounding Lost Harbor and Maggie, formerly known as S.G. or Spruce Goose, is still intermixed throughout the storyline, but I don’t want to give the plot away – it’s just too good. Maya has been an integral part of helping Maggie since the beginning and you don’t think Jennifer would let that just fall by the wayside, no way. So plan on this holiday season being filled with lots of love, cookies, tinsel, and an old mystery.
