This new adult, sports romance was way more emotional than I was anticipating. Aurora – or fondly known as Rory, begins college carrying deep emotional scars that pulled at my heartstrings through the entire book. Her journey is heart wrenching so grab some tissues before turning the pages and then snuggle in as Noah steals your heart.

Noah Holden is your average college sports player and all around just player. He’s sampled more of the female population than even he can tabulate as a business major, but when his best friend’s little sister moves in at the beginning of the year his player status doesn’t feel quite right anymore. Rory has him tied up in knots and everything he knew turns upside down. For someone who never dates, or ever intended to fall for a girl, Noah finds himself in uncharted waters with Rory and while it should feel all kinds of wrong, there is something about Rory that feels all kinds of right.

There is something connecting Noah and Rory at a deeper level, but even with that connection, Rory struggles to be herself. It’s heartbreaking to read her story, but probably because I connected with so much of what she went through. People who should unconditionally love you but don’t, is a tough pill to swallow, but I love that Lianne didn’t shy away from the tough topics and gives Rory this real life outlook that many young women face, along with the tools on how to get help.

These two were great and I loved so many of the secondary characters, although I did want to kick Aiden, Rory’s brother, a few times and not for the reasons you may think. I’m looking forward to more in this world as it continues to grow. Bring on the Lakers.

I was not expecting this book to be as sweet as it was. I’m totally in love with the beginning to this new Lakeshore U series and I can hardly wait to see where the rest of the series goes.

Both Aiden and Dayna have been living in place where they are trying to escape their pasts. Dayna has been grieving her brother and Aiden has been trying to outrun his father’s history. On paper they shouldn’t work, but in person they bring out the best in each other. It was a great relationship to watch blossom.

Their relationship is certainly not one without hardship, but in the end they are the kind of couple that others strive to be. I love how sweet Aiden really is, given how Dayna is his first real relationship and while she did have a long term boyfriend before him, she wasn’t exactly in the right headspace until Aiden landed on her beach. I can’t wait to see them pop up as the series continues. I’m completely smitten by these two.

Angsty and raw with lots of teenage emotion. It’s opposites attract at its best.

Zane is a wounded animal, in theory, lashing out at everyone around him, well, everyone except his Grams. His Grams his is entire world, the woman who raised him when his mother left, his father leaving before he was ever born. With his grandmother’s failing health Zane isn’t looking toward the future knowing he will take care of her the same way she took care of him. With all of his friends soon heading off to college he knows he will be left behind and seeing someone like Celeste who has both parents, money, and a future…he lashes out, over and over and over again. If he only didn’t want her while he was also trying to get rid of her maybe he wouldn’t feel so terrible.

Celeste’s life isn’t all roses and sunshine. Money doesn’t instantly make everything better, nor does having two parents, they actually have to care. She is alone with no one to really talk to for most of the book and I felt for her numerous times. Celeste is probably the strongest female character I’ve ever read. As much as Zane tries to bring her down or push her away, she stays strong and never gives up or really inwardly puts herself down. I was constantly in awe of her. Personally I would have walked away numerous times, so I admired her courage to be so strong.

These two were more than grumpy/sunshine…Zane is so full anger, but he doesn’t know how to release it except when Celeste is near. She really just wants to help and pretty much can’t stay away, which is why she finds herself back in his presence over and over again, and a lot of it isn’t the attraction, but the basic need to help another human being.

I was a tad disappointed in some of the people in Celeste’s life as the story played out, but as the story came to a close I was happy at how everything turned out. I’ll be excited to see who comes next in this series because there are a few possibilities and just like with other Darling Hill characters, I’ll need updates on how everyone is doing.

Soooo many tears….I needed deep breaths and pauses just to keep reading.

We can all admit that teenage hormones amplify everything to the extreme, add in something that will alter the course of your life and it becomes an overload to any teenage system.

It’s probably why I love reading new adult books so much, the emotions are heightened, the actions are amplified, and everything is just bigger.

Cole and Sofia are thrown into a situation that very few teens have to face and given Sofe’s battle, it’s one that the author tackled with grace and a bucketload of tears.

Both Cole and Sofia have had a crush on one another for quite some time, but neither told the other nor reciprocated, due to one big obstacle…Aaron Bennet. He is Cole’s best friend and Sofe’s twin brother. He’s always been wedged between them and neither knew how to get around the big guy, but when things finally start happening in Sofia’s life that make it nearly impossible for Cole to look the other way they decide it was time for both of them to tell Aaron about their feelings and begin living their truth.

Without giving away the experience, I’m just going to say this; Cole is probably one if the best boyfriends in this series. Prepare to fall hard, but know that this story is also heartbreaking, not because of dumb teenage mistakes, or misspoken words, it’s on a totally different level when it came to pulling on my heartstrings. Family plays a big part in the book, not that they haven’t before, but I love how close these kids are to their parents and how the original Raiders have stayed close to make it one big family as the years have gone by.

This book will require lots of tissues so be prepared and stock up. I could have used wipers for my eyeballs so I could continue reading through the tears.

Missed Notes has one of the most emotional storylines, but the book was well worth it.

A super, angsty slow burn between two best friends.

Did you ever wonder what it would be like to fall in love with not only your best friend, but the best friend that is so interwoven into the fabric of your lives that your parents are best friends, your friendship circle consists of each others friends, that everywhere you turn there is another reminder that if you take that leap and allow your heart to fall and it doesn’t work, there is no escape from the heartache? Yeah…that is the very precipice that Aaron Bennet and Poppy Ford stand upon.

Broken Ties is full of angst. A back and forth that if I was a teen, I’m not sure my own heart would have survived.  Aaron and Poppy grew up together, their parents are best friends, so these two have literally been side by side and formed their own deep friendship. It is only as they reached their teenage years, as the added hormones and body changes arose that feelings started to change, but neither really said or did anything until their senior year. It’s a preverbal straw breaking Poppy’s back that finally springs her into action and she decides that she is no longer going to wait on the sidelines for Aaron to notice her as more than just a friend as her senior year passed her by.

Poppy decides to go out with another boy who has shown interest in her. Finally deciding she’s had enough of waiting around for the one boy she’s ever loved to take notice of her. Eli is nice, sweet, funny, everything she could want, except at the end of the day he’s not Aaron. Doing her best to make the most of her last year in high school she’s determined to enjoy it, even if Aaron drives her crazy with his whiplash.

Does he take notice? Yes and no. He’s always noticed her, but remember my first paragraph. He has a really hard time with separating Poppy the girl he grew up with from the girl he is in love with. Aaron is a good kid and he really wants to do what is right, but sometimes the right thing is more of a detriment to his greater good. Aaron’s senior year is not going like he expected and I love this side of the story that shows even with the best parents, decent grades, the right extra curriculars, and doing all of the right things that even what looks perfect on paper, well…sometimes not everything is actually perfect. L.A. Cotton never fails to bring a very real aspect to every story and this part of Aaron’s life is very relatable.

Lastly, it’s hard not to mention the moments on page with Jason Ford, Poppy’s dad, as he definitely has a special bond with his baby girl. Practically every time he was in the story I was weeping.  As a coach and father, Jason always has the best intentions of those around him whether he was with his daughter or doling out advice for Aaron. Every moment he popped up really made me miss my dad something fierce. That’s a rare treat and I appreciate Cotton for bringing him to life.

Broken Ties is another wonderful addition to the second generation of Rixon High and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

It’s a beautiful story of strength and love and what love can do with the right person by your side.

I loved how the second half of this duet delved deeper into the emotional ties between Nix and Birdie. Just because Phoenix and Harleigh reconnected at the end of book one didn’t mean everything was fixed and all the emotional mess, future problems, or family issues in their lives were magically fixed.

Don’t get me wrong, I love HEA’s just as much as the next person, but sometimes when I read a book like this, it’s a reminder that love doesn’t instantly solve all your problems. Instead when love is right, with the right person, they will stand by your side through thick and thin while life may still be rocky.

While Phoenix and Harleigh knew they wanted one another, making it happen wasn’t exactly easy. They lived on opposite sides of town where stigmas ran deep, which was just the tip of the iceberg.

Harleigh was still working on her mental health and just because Nix was back in her life didn’t mean she was instantly fixed. Where they lived and who their family was was just another added another layer of complications for both of them.

This book was emotional and touching for so many reasons. I loved that Cotton didn’t shy away from the hard issues while still keeping their love front and center.

Teenagers feel things deeply and super intense and every time Nix and Birdie came together their intensity leapt off the page.

Nix especially couldn’t contain what he felt Birdie, it flowed out of him, but he also was restrained and sweet. His intensity was mesmerizing to read. I loved what these two overcame to be together and in the end only made them stronger.

I’m looking forward to continuing watching their growth in future books as I see their love only growing and getting stronger as the years go by.

“You came for me,” she whispered.

“Well yeah, you’re my girl, B.” I’ll always come for you.

Silence settled between us, but it was lighter now. Strained but lighter. The need to fix this, to fix her still burned through me, gnawing my bones like acid. But there was no magic cure, no quick antidote for this. It was a part of who she was. Just another part for me to love, to understand and cherish.

Because all of Harleigh’s parts, even the broken ones, made her who she was today. And there wasn’t a single inch of her I didn’t adore.

“How are you feeling? About the game?”

I gazed down at her. “It’s just a game, Harleigh.” You’re more important.

“We both know that’s not true, Nix. It’s your chance to get out of this place. This life.” Exhaustion clung to her words making them heavy.

“Can I tell you something?” I whispered.

Harleigh turned to me, putting us face to face. “Anything.” She smiled. A small uncertain smile, but it was enough.

Enough that I said, “Going to college… leaving The Row… playing for Albany U… it all fucking terrifies me.”

“It does?” No judgment shone in her eyes, only mild surprise.

“Yeah. It freaks me the fuck out.”

“But you’re so good, Nix.”

“Here. I’m good here. But it’s college, B. What if I don’t fit in there? What if I’m not good enough?”

What if I was the boy with the sad life story? The outcast? The charity case?

She leaned up, touching her head to mine and inhaled a shaky breath. “Isn’t it better to have tried than to always wonder what if?”

A small chuckle left my lips. “You make it sound so easy.”

“You’re good enough, Nix.” Her eyes drilled into mine, the flecks of dark green hypnotic. “And you’re worthy. You deserve this. You deserve a shot at something good, something better.”

“You do too, you know? You deserve the world.” And I wanted to give it to her.

“I can’t see that far yet.” She dropped her gaze, leaving a cold chill in my veins.

“Birdie, look at me.” I angled her face to mine. “If you can’t see it yet, I’ll see it for the both of us.”

Angsty and emotional, grab the tissues for the first part of this raw, heartfelt story.

Harleigh and Phoenix (Birdie and Nix) live in a town divided by wealth and poverty. Extreme living on both sides, but at one time these two enemies, now living in opposite worlds, were best friends until one fateful night changed everything.

I was torn about Nix through most of the story, which also made for super angsty reading. He shifted back and forth between being obsessive over Birdie and being an angry teen. It totally pulled at my heartstrings, while also making me hate him at times. I loved it!

Birdie was a mystery which took some time to unwrap. She begins the story with a dark cloud hanging over her head, but what is wrapped up in all that darkness we, the reader, can only speculate. Again, so much angst, it was super delicious!

Birdie is broken, but so is Nix. There is no telling if they will ever be whole even if they can forgive one another.

L.A. Cotton is known for her new adult, angsty books, but this may be her angsty-est one to date!
