Hooking up with the college freshman I was supposed to keep an eye on was easier than tracking her.

Kidnapping her after that first night was easier than following her around campus.

I’m massive, scarred, and tattooed. I don’t exactly fit in with her crowd.

After the job was done, cutting her loose was the hard part.

Making it through the day without seeing her became impossible.

Some may call it stalking, but I call it vigilance.

She seems invested in this game of cat and mouse we’re playing, but she’s mistaken.

I’m not a toy she can discard when she’s bored.

Trying to get her out of my system may leave us both in pieces.

Review – Redemption Refused by Marie James

Book Cover

Redemption Refused; Mission Mercenaries #5
(#5 within a series)

Publication Date: June 1, 2023

Genre/Tropes: Dark/Antihero/Mercenary/Small Age Gap/Suspense Romance

Author: Marie James

Review Rating: 5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:
Redemption Refused revolves around Donavan and Alani. There were peeks of them in the last book and I was salivating to find out the rest of their story in this book.

Donovan is a phoenix, a man reborn from the dark life he had before. He may be the biological brother to Madelene from Bridges Burned, but mentally, emotionally he left that world behind when he lost his first love and the baby she carried. Now he goes by Donovan and works for Angel as a mercenary, only caring about his next paycheck and not necessarily about whoever is attached to it. This attitude carries for a lot of the story and his trauma is very understandable, even when you want to dislike him at times.

Alani is Ayla’s sister from Depravity Delivered, currently attending college and under watch considering what Ayla just went through. Alani could easily be the next target considering it was Angel and the Cerberus’ men who took out everyone and rescued Ayla and Nash (another of Angel’s men) from their imprisonment in Cortez’s $ex trafficking compound. Alani was a mixed bag of emotions for me. I wavered back and forth, ultimately liking her by the end, it just took me awhile, but I’m glad I stayed with it.

Alani doesn’t realize the danger she’s in, but her babysitter, Donovan, to whom she’s been assigned could be just as bad. Their toxic back and forth goes on for months, even with Donovan’s threats that she needs to be more careful with her life. Their pull to one another is unique. Alani seems to keep looking for trouble, mostly as she looks in the shadows for Donovan, but all in all this girl is toxic with a capital T, but Donovan isn’t much better. His world carries demons and he knows he will only bring them to her doorstep. He is no white knight, but is she necessarily looking for one?

I don’t want to call this a slow burn, because all these two seem to do is burn the sheets up…okay, technically there aren’t sheets involved when these two get together, but you’ll get the drift. However, emotional attachment, yeah…completely slow burn between them because both of them have extreme emotional damage, but the end product is well worth the toxic stew these two brew to get there.

While Marie James doesn’t necessarily state that this is the finale, there also isn’t a progression like the other books. There is still one final member of Angel’s mercenary group lingering unattached. I’m going to hold out hope that we get to find out more about him in the future.

Meet Marie James

Let’s see…where to begin…

I’m inching up on the BIG 4-0. The gray hairs are doubling what seems like daily, and the wrinkles and laugh lines are more pronounced than ever.

I have an amazing husband (Married just over 15 years.)

We have two boys we’re doing our best to raise as respectful gentleman.

I have a master’s degree in criminal justice which I used to work as a juvenile probation office until deciding to write full-time in June of 2019. So that means there’s usually always some criminal/law element to my novels.

If I’m not writing; I’m reading.

My favorite genres recently are bully/reverse harem and enemies to lovers. Maybe I’m reliving my traumatic teen years through the girls who actually end up with the boys. (Not that I would change my history since it’s gotten me exactly where I need to be!)

I love coffee. I miss carbs. Music is LIFE. I try not to be too serious.

Blog Tour – Depravity Delivered by Marie James

We are so thrilled to announce the release of Depravity Delivered by Marie James!

The job I took was personal for my boss, but my abduction quickly made it personal for me.
There’s no forgiveness for the things they made me do to her.
It would be easy to point fingers, but what about the part of me that liked it?
Something triggered that sickness and left me needy.
I made a choice to protect her when I could, but the need to hurt her again is always in the back of my mind.
The crazy thing is, I see that same darkness in her eyes when she looks at me.
If we survive captivity, there’s still no guarantee we’ll survive each other.

Review/Synopsis:

Review:
I lost track of time, staying up until all hours of the night while reading Depravity Delivered.

While reading about this dark topic isn’t necessarily new to me, the emotionally dark places that Marie James took me were. While it should have, and at times did, feel wrong to read about the experiences that these two characters experienced it also was like nothing I’ve read before. It was captivating, heart breaking, disturbing, and weirdly understandable. We live in a cruel world and there is nothing that bonds people faster than shared trauma. There is certainly enough of it going around that we all have some form of trauma and it helps us bond as we meet new people, but seriously it is nothing like Ayla and Nash experience.

Why am I being vague…this book is to be experienced and there really isn’t a way to talk about what Ayla and Nash go through without major spoilers. So, just know that this book does not keep any of the darkness “off the page”, it is full on, so if you need to know triggers before reading, please read them.

While this book may seem horrifying, it is actually about two people who experience one of the worst things that can happen to you and through their trauma they bond and help one another heal. There were so many times I asked myself, how are these two going to come out the other side, but in a weird way, thankfully they had each other.

I am actually loving this series and the dark places James has been willing to delve. It’s been eye opening and yes, disturbing, but also an amazing reading experience.

Blog Tour – Bridges Burned by Marie James

 Release Date: February 2

I didn’t swear vengeance on the Severino Family after Ellie’s death. I was only a child after all.

I didn’t swear vengeance when my father, a coward who wasn’t man enough to seek justice for her, drank himself into a divorce.

Going after them would be a death sentence.

I chose to live my life in the shadows, seeking revenge for others.

That was until I ran into the very man that took Ellie’s life.

I can still smell the smoke clinging to my skin from all the bridges I burned because of that man.

Walking away was no longer an option.

Killing him would be easy, but taking the woman that was promised to him seemed like a better wager.

Exacting retribution through her was the gamble I made.

Surviving her now seems impossible.

Review – Bridges Burned by Marie James

Bridges Burned; Mission Mercenaries #3
(Interconnected standalone within a series)

Publication Date: February 2, 2023

Genre/Tropes: Mercenary/Dark/Mafia Romance

Author: Marie James

Review Rating: 5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:
Bridges Burned is the third book in this dark mercenary series. While this book revolves around the mafia, revenge, and has a slow burn between the main couple, there is also a familiar feel to parts of this story. It didn’t make me like it any less, but perhaps that will help sort out why I continue to return to the comfort of this familiar world.

There seems to be a recurring theme among these mercenaries; kidnap a woman and then experience remorse while trying to figure out their next move. Yes, Hollis fell into the classic blunder that his fellow co-workers previously did. Silly mercenary. On top of that he swore off ever falling for anyone given his family history and isn’t that like waving a red flag in front of a romantic hero. He was going down and going down hard.

Hollis’ one goal in life is to take out the man who ruined his family and when he gets the opportunity, regardless of his job, those around him, even his own life, he takes it. He never stopped to think about collateral damage along the way, collateral damage in the form of a beautiful woman named Madelene.

As for the heroine, Madelene may have grown up in the mafia world and known all about the brutality and darkness, but what broke her was that she was eventually sold to the Severino family like a piece of furniture. Engaged to a monster, she is suffocated with the thoughts of her future, but when she’s kidnapped by a stranger, it might actually be the escape she never knew she’d get.

Neither Hollis or Madelene know about a healthy relationship or what love really is, but together they understand darkness and that is what I liked about the two of them. They really understood one another and what could be taken away from you in the blink of an eye. Their time together may have built slow, but it was meaningful. Plus….the twist at the end…brilliant.

Blog Tour – Mistakes Made by Marie James

 Release Date: November 17

The worst thing you can ever do is make an assumption about me, despite my job resting solely on making people think I’m someone I’m not.
I know that makes me crazy, narcissistic, and a little out of touch with the reality of how the world works.
I’ll never argue that fact with anyone.
Maybe it was the hundred-degree Texas weather.
Maybe it was overstimulation from the crowds at the beach.
Maybe it was one of a million other things that irritated me that day.
But when Raya Reed looked me up and down, finding me lacking on some scale I’m sure no man in her life would ever live up to, I snapped.
It wasn’t until she was tied up in my house that I discovered she was Senator Thomas Reed’s daughter.
A normal person would let her go.
I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my past, but making Raya MINE will never be one of them.

Review – Mistakes Made by Marie James

Mistakes Made; Mission Mercenaries #2
(Interconnected standalone within a series)

Publication Date: November 17, 2022

Genre/Tropes: Antihero/Forced Proximity/Kidnapping/Dark Romance

Author: Marie James

Review Rating: 5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:
I was totally on the edge of my seat, biting my nails with how the plot was going to play out in this dark, kidnapping book. It was a twisted, wild ride.

Liam is a man who walks in a morally gray world. While he recently made the switch to work for Angel as a mercenary, he would not call himself a good guy. When he makes a rash decision to kidnap Raya he never thought through the ramifications of who she was or what it would do to his life, he just snapped, but it didn’t take long to realize that even if it ruined his life, he would never regret a moment of it.

Mistakes Made was hot on a completely different level and the relationship that developed between Liam and Raya was also something that developed on an intense level, but completely different than I was expecting. I enjoyed that surprise more that I thought I would.

Raya originally began the book a complete shell of a woman, a puppet in her father’s world, and honestly I wasn’t a real fan, but by the end of the book, I loved the woman she became and this character development is not only what held me, but made me fan of this couple.

Mistakes Made is a wild ride from start to finish and I really had no idea how it was going to end. This entire series has had me off kilter, which I love, and I’m looking forward to each new story and what new twist is brought to the forefront.

Blog Tour – Lessons Learned by Marie James

 Release Date: October 13

They call me a soldier of fortune. I go where the money takes me.

Lauren Vos, an FBI agent, and I were an odd pairing, having met years ago on another job.

Against my better judgment, I let her under my skin.

She got to me in a way no other woman had before, but it still didn’t stop her from stepping over my lifeless body the first chance she got.

The day she left me for dead changed me in too many ways to count.

Now that our paths have crossed again, all I can think about is revenge.

The problem with punishing Lauren Vos is that instead of running as far from me as she can, she enjoys the way I treat her.

Her need for degradation may be the death of us both.

The Mission Mercenaries series is a Cerberus MC spin-off. Expect crossovers to happen!

Review – Lessons Learned by Marie James

Lessons Learned; Mission Mercenaries #1
(#1 within a series)

Publication Date: October 13, 2022

Genre/Tropes: Anti-Hero/Dark/Enemies-to-Lovers Romance

Author: Marie James

Review Rating: 5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:
Lessons Learned is dark…like extra, cacao dark chocolate dark. Please heed any TW’s, but if dark is where you live and breathe then Angel and Lauren’s story is one passionate and emotional tale to enjoy.

Both Angel and Lauren come from a twisted past. It’s defined their present and haunts their every day decisions. While they’ve taken very different paths because of their trauma, it has also led them to each other, just in very different ways.

Lauren works for the FBI, undercover, and feeds off the underbelly of the criminals she encounters to feed the demons that live in her soul. Loving the duality of taking out the filth while playing in the very playground that feeds the darkness inside her is what keeps her going, most days. This is where she first meets Angel, but it’s years later when their paths cross again.

Angel is a mercenary, working only for himself and his next paycheck. His only goal is his target and any casualty or person left behind is collateral damage. Useless people and anyone standing in front of his payday should learn their lesson and he was pretty sure Lauren would learn hers, but she seems to feed on his darkness. Now that she’s crossed his path once more, he’s set on teaching her one final time.

Lauren and Angel are explosive. Both of their inner demons only get more aggressive as they spend more time together. Remember how I mentioned this book is dark? I was riveted…First question was, would they make it out alive? Secondly, most hate-to-lovers romance…well, when they fall, they fall hard and I was so there for it. Lastly, this is the beginning of a series and I was totally invested in how this series was going to grow.

Lessons Learned is definitely in the deep, deep end of the dark pool, but I was so there for it!!

Synopsis:
They call me a soldier of fortune, a hired gun, a man with no morals only looking to get paid—a mercenary.
That’s true… mostly.
From where I stand, I don’t see it as a bad thing.
Getting paid to do the dirty work, to take the jobs saner people refuse is my bread and butter.
I love the danger, the thrill, the warmth that attempts to spark something in my cold, black heart.
Why shouldn’t I get paid for that?
Does it really matter if I’m indifferent about who I step on to succeed? The job always gets done, and I never look back.
The same went for Lauren Vos, an undercover FBI agent working in some of the most dangerous trafficking circles known to man.
Our paths crossed on a job years ago, and somehow fate has thrown us together once again.
Only this time around she isn’t interested in letting me forget.
The problem for her is that I’m not the same man she thought she left for dead.

Cover Reveal – Mistakes Made by Marie James

Crossing Borders; Blackbridge Security #10
(#10 within a series)

Publication Date: June 9, 2022

Genre/Tropes: Fake Boyfriend/Bodyguard/MM Romance

Author: Marie James

Review Rating: 5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:
I can hardly wait for everyone else to discover how fantastic Brooks and Archer are together!! I loved their story and this book was the perfect culmination to the end of the Blackbridge series.

There have been hints, easter eggs, and small teasers for multiple books now on what could be happening in Brooks’ professional and personal life, but nothing like the bombs dropped in the last book that actually confirmed what was coming down the pipeline. I don’t know about anyone else, but I was ecstatic to have it all actually confirmed and even more so that their story was absolutely delicious and totally delightful!!

Brooks’ job within the security company would appear to be one of the easier ones, but could also be one of the toughest depending on if you were a people person or not. He is assigned to high profile cases as, the best word I can think of, as an escort, but he’s also a bodyguard. His boyfriend type of services are in the public eye while he provides security. When he’s assigned to Archer Bremen, a rockstar, he’s never been the boyfriend to a man, but it doesn’t deter him from doing his job, nor doing it professionally. What Brooks isn’t prepared for is the feelings Archer stirs up in him considering Brooks has only ever been with women and considered himself straight, but perhaps his outlook on his personal life just shifted. Brooks’ bi-wakening was written so well, I loved taking the journey with him.

Archer needs the help of Blackbridge Security when he blows up his life in a big way. He’s a famous rockstar that not only came out of the closet in a very public way, but blowing up his life has a lot more to do with the way he tried to shove himself back into it. Archer is a storm of a mess, but being around Brooks is when you see him calm and actually trying to be a better man. While he does push Brooks, a lot, he also is a sensitive soul, with a big heart and his vulnerability will break down just about anyone’s walls. He’s a bit manic, he is a soulful rockstar afterall, but his sweet soul really won me over and at the end of the day, these two together are just perfect.

This book travels down the timeline of multiple Blackbridge stories, while the tension and chemistry builds to a delicious level between Brooks and Archer. Dropping all of those teasers back into their appropriate spots made all the anticipation well worth the wait. I adored revisiting some of my favorite moments throughout the series while digging deeper into what all of those hints really were. This book is best enjoyed if the series has been read in order, but if you’ve missed a book or two, you could still jump into their love story and follow along with no problem.

Cease Fire; Blackbridge Security #9
(An interconnected standalone within a series)

Publication Date: April 7, 2022

Genre/Tropes: Contemporary/Intrigue Romance

Author: Marie James

Review Rating: 5 Gold Stars

Review/Synopsis:

Review:

Blackbridge is back and Kit Riggs is dreamy and steamy.

Kit has had a crush on Jules for most of his life. Everyone in his orbit knows about it, especially the woman herself and as much as Kit has fantasized about Jules and wishing for a future with her, everything comes crashing down after a weekend spent with her.

My heart wept for Kit through this entire book. Here is a guy who has always dreamed of having a family and taking care of a wife, specifically with Jules in that role, and she tramples all over his heart and dreams repeatedly. Kit is the ideal man, he’s loving, tender, but also a total freak in the sheets and Jules didn’t appreciate him at all.

Over and over again Jules showed an ugly, manipulative side which did not give way to any sympathy from me, which constantly had me wondering what exactly Kit saw in her. While there were brief flashbacks to when Kit and Jules were younger it still didn’t paint her in a better light, so I was left wondering at what point Kit fell irrealicogibly in love with her.

On a side note; while this story is taking place, Brooks gets sucked into Jules manipulative scheme, and I feel horrible for him on every level, but it does give a peek into his storyline, which I’m terribly excited for.

Along those lines, I do love the brotherhood that continues to take place between Kit and all the Blackbridge men. I’ve always loved how all of these men look after each other and work together. My favorite will continue to always be Wren, well him and his foul-mouthed bird, Puff Daddy. Wren’s meddling and no-filter ways, along with the adoration he has for his girlfriend, Whitney, is truly heart melting, honestly, it’s how all of the Blackbridge men are.

While Jules might not be my favorite heroine of all the women in this series, I adored Kit. He’s pretty much the perfect man, inside and out, which makes my dislike for Jules not appreciating him even more, but….this book is totally worth it for Kit alone. A 4.5 star read.

As the mechanic for Blackbridge Security, when I make a mistake things don’t work properly.

Correcting that mistake is the only way to get things operational.

I meet issues in my personal life with the same mindset.

How was I to know the woman I’ve been flirting with at the gym is the same woman I called a noise complaint on?

I got her kicked out of her condo.

My first response: Move in with me.

New Release – CONTROLLED BURN by Marie James

🔥🔥HOT NEW RELEASE🔥🔥

Release Date: February 3

As the mechanic for Blackbridge Security, when I make a mistake things don’t work properly.

Correcting that mistake is the only way to get things operational.

I meet issues in my personal life with the same mindset.

How was I to know the woman I’ve been flirting with at the gym is the same woman I called a noise complaint on?

I got her kicked out of her condo.

My first response: Move in with me.

When she confessed to having three kids, it was too late to back down.

I thought keeping my hands off of her was going to be a problem, but the tiny terrors she brought along with her are extremely effective at solving that problem for me.

Review:

Super cute, close proximity, single mom romance. Every few books Marie James writes a story that contains adorable children and this happens to be one of them. Actually this book contains three super cute kids and it only enhanced the story making it that much better. I loved the kids and I loved the Irish man and I just loved this book!

Kendall is a single mom, trying her best to raise her three small kids on her own, but after losing her home, she had to move in with her brother. When the neighbor complained about the noise, they were suddenly served with their second eviction notice and Kendall didn’t know what to do. They didn’t have any family left and she was soon going to be homeless. She thought about apologizing to the neighbor, but since they were already being evicted, that thought went right out the door, so instead Kendall went with giving him a piece of her mind…especially since he’d been flirting with her for weeks.

Finnegan seriously had no idea that the woman he’d been flirting with in the apartment building gym was the same woman who lived on his floor and was responsible for all the recent noise. He might have reconsidered making the complaint, or reconsidered flirting, he wasn’t exactly sure, but either way he felt bad. He felt so bad that he made an offer for her to move in with him since she had nowhere else to go. The fact that she came with baggage….um….He was only half serious about the offer, so he shouldn’t have been surprised when she took him up on it. He really liked her, her kids…um….how long were they staying again?

This story is all kinds of adorable, with a bit of intrigue mixed in. After all this is a Blackbridge Security novel. Of course there are character favorites who make appearances, my personal favorites are Wren and Whitney who add some extra spice, and extra, extra spice…Puff Daddy gets a girlfriend. It’s hilarious.

While Finn hangs out with some of the single guys (there don’t seem like there are too many of those left) there are a few hints of what’s to come and there are brief catch ups for fans of past characters. I love both of these scenarios sooooo much and Marie James did the perfect amount of each while keeping the plot moving right along.

Kendall’s kiddos had the perfect blend of sassy and cuteness without being terrors or taking away from the time that Finn and Kendall needed to get to know one another. Could we be seeing more Blackbridge children in the future? If Wren has his way…yes. LOL!
