“At your place, I can give you your present.” She nibbled on her bottom lip and I laid on the gas to find out what she had in mind. We hadn’t been apart long, but she’d been on my mind the entire time I hadn’t been on the field. 

“You know we’ve got at least another hour until we get to campus.”

Her grin widened. “Waiting will make it even better once we get there.” 

“You’re killing me, Willa.” I shoved down the urge to slam on the accelerator to get us there faster. 

“Sorry, I swear I’ll be good.” She crossed her fingers over her heart. “I can’t believe you came. I’ve spent the last couple weeks unsure if you wanted to see me.” She glanced down at her hands. One thumb brushed over the knuckle of the other. “When I sent the text, I wasn’t sure how you’d respond since you haven’t said as much since Christmas, but I also know you’re busy getting ready for the playoffs.” She moved one hand and the other like she was trying to reason with herself about why I hadn’t had as much to say in our texts. 

“I figured you were busy with your family.” I hated myself for making her doubt for one second how I felt. Forgetting her brother. Forgetting the distance between us. Forgetting what I should be focusing on, I pulled over into the emergency lane of the highway.

She glanced behind her and braced her hands on the seat and peeling dashboard. “What are you doing?” 

 My seatbelt clicked as I released it and I took off my hat and kissed her again. 

I let loose every emotion racing through me from the minute I left her hotel room until she stood in front of me by the baggage claim. The flood of feelings staggered me. Like a valve released on a dam that had been threatening to burst for years. 

Her fingers gripped my coat tight and when I broke the kiss, feeling out of breath like I’d run in a touchdown after an interception, she looked up at me and licked her lips. The ones I couldn’t wait to taste again. 

“Sorry, I freaked you out. And sorry I screwed up picking you up at the airport.” 

“I don’t mind,” her whispered breathless words threatened the dam bursting completely. “Keep screwing up like that and I’ll have to keep you.”

It was like a lava bomb went off in my chest. 

She so easily said things that would topple my world. Keep me. No one ever kept me. No one ever cared enough.

The best Rival book yet with one of my favorite Maya Hughes couples shining through.

Willa and Ezra come from two different worlds, and I’m not just talking about two different colleges. This story contains a lot of Princess and the Pauper themes, along with them attending rival schools. Willa comes from a tight knit family, never having to worry about where her next meal comes from or having a roof over her head, a very different world from the one Ezra grew up in. This duality travels throughout the entire plot of the book and their struggle, love, and heartbreak is a beautiful story to read.

First I’ll start with what I loved about Ezra; for the harsh, never having anyone to count on, knowing where he’d be sleeping, or when his next meal would be way he grew up, he is the sweetest, nicest, and most caring individual Maya has ever written. From the very beginning of this story I was completely head over heels all in for everything Ezra. He displayed a vulnerability that is so rare, placing aside pride, anger, and misplaced hostility, instead caring so deeply about Willa and her feelings that I couldn’t help continually falling for him over and over again.

Willa was also a bright shining light, bubbling over and pulling Ezra out from the shell he liked to live in. She was the one person who didn’t allow him to hide, who allowed him to be someone other than the hulking beast he released on the field every week. The more time he spent with her the more he released that he enjoyed who he was with her, he just worried about Willa finding out about his past and ruining any potential future he could have with her.

Willa too has a complicated past, not to mention an overprotective brother that Ezra has met on the field time and time again. With the odds stacked against them, could they truly have a chance at a future?

A Rival’s Kiss is a complete standalone, however I feel the emotions hit just a little bit harder because it is interconnected to her other series. You don’t need to have read any of Maya’s previous books for this book to hit all the feels, as this book can be read as a standalone as well.

You can help me out with the zipper. I think it’s jammed.”

With deep breaths, I walked to her and tugged on the zipper, not wanting to yank the damn thing apart. “It’s stuck.”

“Thanks for the update. Can you see what it’s stuck on?” She looked over her shoulder.

“Let me get a closer look.” I knelt behind her and steadied myself with my hands on her hips.

If I hadn’t already taken care of myself earlier this would be a big problem. Eye level with the jammed zipper, I picked at the fabric stuck between the teeth. “I’ll have to pull it down to fix it.”

“Whatever it takes.”

My throat was drought dry. I jerked the zipper down, pulling the fabric free, but the freed pull moved much easier and slid almost to the bottom of the zipper. The lace ruffle top of her underwear peeked out from the gaping fabric. Fuck, I was in trouble.

Swallowing, I kept the lace free from the teeth, but the move shifted my hand, so it skimmed along her spine all the way up. My heart sprinted like I was headed for the end zone.

Her body shuddered and her head snapped straight ahead.

“Sorry. My hands are cold.” Dread at her wondering why my hands were this cold and slightly damp, sped me through the final zip.

“Don’t worry about it.” Her voice was hoarse and stilted.

Don’t make this weird, Cole. I did the eye hook at the top of the dress and ran my hands over her shoulders. The curve of her neck was inviting. I wanted to bury my nose in her skin and inhale the scent that had enveloped me from our first pictures snuggled up on the couch.

Kennedy Finch was dangerous to my health. Bundled up in a neat, entirely too-tempting package, she was a walking wet dream and a captivating disaster.

She sat on the edge of her bed. The neckline of her dress showcased her breasts, which swelled from her position deepening the cleavage that my mouth wanted to dive face-first into.

I cleared my throat and looked anywhere but at her.

Enemies to Friends to Lovers. The perfect trifecta.

To sum up the juicy details and make you dive right in: we have a school/love competition to win with a fake relationship to kick it off. Plus these two aren’t just faking it, they loathe one another with a passion of a thousand suns. This is the kind of yummy-hand over the popcorn while pulling up a front row seat for all the steamy-steam kind of book.

Cole and Kennedy have tons of friction. It rolled off them whenever they were around one another where you could basically get out the marshmallows and roast them in the the fire that was burning so hot in their vicinity.

What began as complete animosity was a lot of misunderstanding. These two truly did begin with a ton of attraction and a night that went horribly wrong, but that is just a small part of their story.

There is a puppy love game on campus that has a huge prize for the winners, but said winners need to actually be a couple. That is a huge feat for both Cole and Kennedy in general. Neither are known for dating or being in a relationship especially to each other. To win it all will basically take a miracle, or at the very least big acting skills. They are both uber competitive and neither of them wants to lose, but as the competition goes on, they may actually lose more than just the competition. With their hearts on the line, losing doesn’t begin to look too bad, until everything falls apart.

We enter again into the STFU world and while I adore these new characters, I still can’t get past the horrible coach. I was really hoping Maya would have lightened up on the storyline around him, but alas Mikelson is still there and still just as horrible.

The entire idea with the Kiss List is fresh and adorable; Cole and Kennedy are fun in their challenges with each other, but I would have loved to see what the other couples in the challenge were doing. Just a thought. While I loved the book, that would be my only complaint to this story, well aside from the coach, who seriously is just the absolute worst, non-redeemable person ever.

So far, I’m loving this new university series and I’m looking forward to more.

“Are Ashley and Taylor home?” 

Closing the door, I turned to face him. “No, they won’t be back for a couple—” 

His lips cut off my words. 

He’d bridged the gap between us, and my back was pressed against the metal safety door. His hands pressed into the door behind me on either side of my head, caging me against him, not that there was anywhere else I wanted to go. His mouth was searing and hungry and different than yesterday. It was more in every conceivable way. 

He tasted like mint. 

The tingles spread throughout my body, turning into sparklers under my skin. Hot and bright, the charge ignited every nerve ending. The firm but somehow soft feel of his lips sent the tingles traveling lower, and I gasped, squeezing my thighs together. 

His hands moved from the door to the sides of my neck. His thumbs brushing against my skin fired off even more flares. 

He shifted his hands off me and rested his forehead against mine. “I know this is crazy. I know we said we wouldn’t, but I can’t stop thinking about you. It’s been keeping me up at night how much I wanted to touch you like this again. To kiss you again.” His eyes burned with a fierceness that sent shivers streaking down my spine. 

I swallowed, trying to keep myself from blurting out the first thing that came to mind. “Same.”

The relationship between Reid and Leona was electric from the beginning and meeting all of the new characters that will take up residence at STFU was fun and exciting. I feel that is always the hardest part when stepping into a brand new series, getting to know the new characters and setting up the world around them. Maya did a great job of exciting me about what’s to come while still keeping the plot moving on the primary storyline.

Both Reid and Leona faced a tough situation with Leona being the daughter of the university’s president and Reid being a member of the football team. I won’t sugercoat it by saying the STFU’s coach is anything but a giant dick. The coach doesn’t like anyone, especially the president, so when Reid and Leona venture down the path of a relationship, I just say…this book is ripe with tension.

I’m looking forward to more from this series, especially the next couple, it looks like an enemies to lovers full of heat and passion.

Sabrina is a girl down on her luck and Hunter is a man completely closed off to pretty much everything so having someone move into his personal space is HUGE!! This new addition to the SWANK world brings it all; laughs, emotions, and tie ins to Maya’s other worlds.

Sabrina begins this book with her down-on-her-luck, really needs a helping hand, hates where her life has landed, but made me chuckle at it all – because haven’t we all been there. Wearing our worst outfit, no makeup, hair in a disarray, and that’s when you see someone you never wanted to see. That, in a nutshell, is Sabrina’s opening and I loved every moment of it.

Hunter, on the other hand, has never lived with anyone. No roommates in college, no roommates after college, no sleepovers with women, nothing , nada. Granted, he’s not a slob, or any such thing, he just has other issues. He is a man full of issues, but when his grandmother says he’s getting a roommate (after all it is her apartment he’s living in) he really can’t say no.

As a huge fan of Maya’s books my favorite parts were when characters from other worlds stepped in or were mentioned, afterall, SWANK deals with entertainment whether it is with sports, music, weddings, or hosting large events. The whole concept of SWANK works well as a tie in to lots of her other books and it brings me great joy every single time they crossover.

Hunter and Sabrina bicker and banter through most of the book, so it’s a slow burn for sure. Hunter has never really allowed anyone in, his friends included, so allowing Sabrina in is a huge step indead.

I would have loved to see Hunter break down some of his walls a little earlier, but that is just my personal preference. Sabrina is cute and quirky and I adore quirkiness and creativity in anyone, so I was rooting for her from the very get go.

4.5 stars overall due to Hunter not fangirling over Sabrina like I did.

Passing through the black curtain to the cordoned off area, I couldn’t help myself. Barely looking past my shoulder, I stole a glance at her.

A squadron of people surrounded her, a lot like the first time I’d seen her backstage in a sea of suits.

And just like before, she found me through their heads and our gazes collided.

A glimmer of a smile quirked the edges of her lips.

It was all I let myself have before disappearing behind the cloak of fabric headed to the after party.

Keeping the auction winners entertained helped occupy my mind, but my thoughts always came back to Bay, especially while they were off getting pictures taken with Without Grey.

A gentle hand landed on my shoulder. “Look at you, cleaning up way better than you have any right to.”

I glanced down only a few inches for once, due to her five-inch heels, taking in the spitfire who’d made all Bay’s dreams come true. And taken her away from me.

Those dueling emotions warred in my chest. “Hey, Maddy.”

“Good to see you, Keyton.” She raised up on her toes even when I stooped down to hug her. She kissed my cheek and leaned against the surprisingly sparsely populated backstage bar where I’d asked the bartender for a bottle and some glasses. “Did you see the show?” Her gaze flicked to the black curtained doorway.

“I saw her.”

Some of the tension evaporated from her pose. “You did?”

“I did. We’re having coffee tomorrow.”

“That’s great. Amazing.” Her smile lit up neon-sign bright before dimming a hint. She stood straighter, smoothing her hands down a more relaxed look than she’d worn the last time I saw her. “I know things…I know things between you two were…unresolved.”

“I think her letter came through loud and clear.” Like a cannon ball to the chest.

“She—” Maddy pinched her lips together. “Never mind.” She exhaled on what sounded like a ghost of a laugh like some inside joke had been told that I wasn’t privy to. “It’s for you two to figure out. If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that no one can force two people to sort through their past before they’re ready.”

It’s here, it’s finally here!!! The Dare/Keyton and Bay conclusion is finally here!!

Unbreak my heart…anyone else hear this soulful Toni Braxton song in their head? No…just me? Okay…I’m so ready to have my broken heart fixed by this soulful story.

Maya Hughes has written the best trilogy of her career. I’m throwing that out there first. This couple has thrown me over the literary edge, stabbed me full of angsty feelings, and left me a blubbering mess over and over and yet I couldn’t wait to find out what happened to these two people who desperately needed their happily ever after! P.S. The Hate of Loving You is full of the aforementioned, but so darn worth reading every moment of it.

At the beginning of this book, Keyton and Bay are like two rusty cogs who are stuck in their pain and hurt, unmoving from where their past has left them. It’s soul crushing, truly soul crushing to watch them struggle. However, as the rust begins to drop off their cogs and their relationship moves forward, they discover that with the success of their careers spending time a relationship is nearly impossible. Is it really too late for them?

Finding any spare moment they can, between Keyton’s games and traveling, Bay’s studio time, promotions and tour schedule they relearn one another. It’s been a decade since Dare first heard Bay singing in her backyard and they’ve come a long way from those two teenagers, but are they really ready for anything more?

There are so many moments that highlight how perfect these two are together, showing growth for both Bay and Dare/Keyton. While I wanted to weep at the six years they had lost, it was also a time where they gained experiences as a young adult in their careers and who they spent time with, travelled with, etc… which really shapes them into who they have now become.

Some of the best moments in this story, aside from steamy times, were Fulton U pop up moments. All the interconnections were fantastic and I couldn’t have been happier with how the entire book wrapped up. Don’t wait, if you haven’t read the first past of this trilogy yet, start it now so when The Hate of Loving You comes out you will be ready.

We pick up where The Art of Falling For You ended, Dare & Bay come face to face after 4 years apart and I have to say I’m not emotionally ready to talk about this book now or ever…what has Maya done to me…I just want to curl up in a ball and cry for the near and foreseeable😭

Heart Wrenching doesn’t even begin to scratch the emotional brokenness of this book. Dare is a broken man and I’m so weepy over him…Dare has touched a part of me that hit an emotional nerve.

Ok, pulling myself together…

This is the second book in the Falling trilogy, which I know is always the toughest road in any trilogy. Things always get worse before they get better, deep down I know this, but dang, Maya really gave us a bumpy road. This entire series is truly her best work to date. I personally have been hit with the feels hard (if you couldn’t tell) while reading this trilogy more than any of her prior works.

While Dare was twisting up my insides, Bay was bringing out my ragy side. I tried my best to hold back my judgment and anger and instead tried to place myself in her shoes. It helped to remember why she was filled with anger and hurt and that just four years ago she didn’t know why Dare lashed out and destroyed her father’s guitar. She took his rage personally which at the time also set her back once again as a singer and totally crushed her spirit. Bay already suffered from singing in front of people which only compounded once again when his anger was unleashed. Her love turned to shame, self loathing, losing trust in the boy she fell in love with and wondering if he was playing her for a fool the whole time. So while I was angry for how she treats Dare through a lot of this book while he works so hard at apologizing, I kept those reminders close at hand.

All Dare wants to do is apologize, get back in Bay’s good graces and if there is any chance, have a second chance with the only girl he’s ever loved again. He has his work cut out for him since she would rather cut him out of her life, but if there is one thing Dare is not, he’s not a quitter. Four years ago, Bay didn’t stick around to talk to Dare, but now that they have a month together Dare won’t waste another opportunity, even if he doesn’t sleep, or he has to break rules to do it.

I had several moments where I wanted to clam slap Bay a bit and I want to cuddle huddle with Dare through most of this book. As the book ended and I was left in an emotional mess, these questions ran through my mind; Are they really good for each other? Should they just forgive and forget? Can things work when their goals are moving in opposite directions? Can love mend all wounds?

Maya has really strung me out with this book and I can hardly wait a month for the third book, but until then I’ll be huddled up in a corner…crying.😭❤️

He wanted to pretend he was a nice guy now? I ran through my first day at Greenwood Senior High. The vivid details craved an excruciatingly clear memory of just the kind of guy he was. Even if he didn’t remember, I certainly did.

If only that had been the end of it. But it wasn’t. He was back that afternoon and mom insisted I take him a glass of lemonade.

I kicked his leg and he slid out with grease marks on his cheeks and hands that only made him hotter.

The universe’s unfairness had never been clearer than Dare looking like a cover model wheeling out from under my mom’s junker of a car. If I’d had a team of stylists and beauty professionals dress me and do my makeup, I’d never be more than catalog cute. He was super-model searing without even trying.

“From my mom.” I shoved the glass toward him.

“It’s not from you? Did you make it yourself?” He set the wrench down on the concrete and drew his knees up, resting his back against the side panel of the car. His gaze locked onto mine, holding it and not letting me look away.

My pulse pounded, and my stomach back flipped into next week. “Just take it.”

“Did you poison it?” He lifted an eyebrow.

“Yes, I dropped in one of my cyanide capsules that I keep on hand for annoying neighbors.”

He didn’t say a word, only let me stand there with my arm extended, not making a move to take the glass.

My hand shook. I jerked it back and took a sip. “See, not poisoned.” I took a step closer and held it out again.

His gray eyes twinkled with amusement. He shot up, so his body brushed against mine on the way up, not trying to make room at all for my personal space. His fingers curled over mine before he pulled the glass from my grasp.

Instead of drinking from the side of glass closest to him, he turned it in his hold and took a sip from my side of the glass. My lip prints melted away by his. He didn’t drop his gaze or look away.

He froze me in my tracks like a deer caught in headlights after a long night in the forest.

“Delicious.”

The Art of Falling For You is a beautiful, angsty story about falling in love for the very first time. This has to be one of the BEST books Maya Hughes has ever written!

I was transported back to my budding youth where new love is an emotion you’ve never experienced, much less understand how every touch, every look, every moment is a rush because it’s new. You yearn to learn everything possible about the person you can’t stop thinking about and you ache for their presence when you are apart. Maya Hughes wraps us in every single emotion that buds from this experience.

“My heart would never be the same. A piece would always belong to him and I wasn’t sure if I’d ever be able to let him go.”– Bay

Both Bay and Dare have never known romantic love and they are both cautious about jumping into something that neither of them could, in a sense, come back from. They both sense whatever the draw is to each other, it’s more than just attraction, it’s something deeper.

Bay doesn’t trust Dare from the very beginning. He is a football god and she is basically invisible. When he starts talking to her Bay is continually waiting for him to reveal she’s being punked in some sort of horrible end of year school prank. Why would he suddenly, after 3 1/2 years notice her, it just doesn’t make sense.

Dare, on the flipside, is leery to bring anyone into his messed up world. He honestly has no idea if he has a future beyond high school and his abusive father haunts his waking thoughts. The thought of sharing any of the bad stuff with the one good thing he’s recently discovered in his life weighs so heavy upon him that sometimes he can hardly breathe.

The vulnerability between these two is so shattering while I felt emphatic for both. My heart continually ached, while I also sighed multiply over their young love. The ups and downs were beautiful and Bay and Dare enraptured me with their story. I had goosebumps so many times, and that was when my heart wasn’t racing.

“Bay had ruined me for anyone who came after her, and I didn’t want there to be anyone else. It was like she’d been sent as a gift to me after so many years in the dark.”- Dare

Also, the title of this book couldn’t have been any better as I felt like I was falling into a  piece of artwork. A love story like they shared was similar to brush strokes on a canvas. Each color combining to make a beautiful picture, but one wrong stoke could change the entire composition.

While this is just the first leg of this overall journey, and my heart is aching for it to continue, I’m torn up for both characters. Their journey and their life is so touching, it is a must read for 2021!
