A fascinating book the deeper it went and holy moly was it hot!!

I loved the premise of the plot, superhumans created by an evil mad scientist, but I’m going to admit, the plot was also lot of fast paced and then wait. So it was like driving through town and hitting lots of red stoplights; a whole lot of frustrating, but I still wanted to get to the final destination, if that makes sense.

Nova is the daughter of the mad scientist, which for me made part of this book intriguing. The other part is she gets roped into stopping her father by Jonas, Nico, Dimitri, Louis, and Isaac. These are men who we come to find out are just like her. They too have been experimented on, abused, and transformed into these superhuman beings, and they too want vengeance over what was done to them. Exciting right?!

While they track down clues to stopping the mad man, it’s through their shared trauma and instant chemistry that brings the heat and honestly not a lot of drama, because these guys are already bonded brothers through what they’ve been through. If there was anything that helped with the stop light waiting it was the firecracker intense heat!!

Nova was a great female lead, not only for her strong personality, but for how she handled each of the guys. After a lifetime of practically being isolated, she was quickly able to to figure out how to work with five strong men, physically and emotionally. Nova was fascinating to read, not discrediting the guys at all, but there was just a lack of background information on each one of them which made getting to know them a bit harder, aside from Jonas who instantly captured my heart for his sarcastic and snarky personality, it just took basically the rest of the book before I could even distinguish the rest of the guys. I hope there is more insight in the next part of this duet because I am still very captivated by this story and want to know how it all plays out.

The second book, in this all consuming series, delves darker, got angstier, and builds a more intimate relationship between the monster and his obsession.

I was once again hooked and drawn in to this fascinating world built by Rina Kent and found it extremely hard to put down in the late night hours even knowing I had to get at least a couple hours sleep before waking up to go to work….boooo for work!! LOL!

Sasha and Kirill’s relationship was torn after Russia. How do you build trust after destroying it in the worst way possible? It’s nearly impossible, but no one said that Sasha or Kirill were quitters. They are two of the most driven, insanely focused, and hard headed characters Rina’s written to date. Personally, I love that both of them have these characteristics because it creates intense volcanic emotions that result in high heat reactions on the page. It obviously makes for electrifying reading and a couple that, no matter how morally gray they are, I’m rooting for them.

Rina Kent is a one click author for me because her writing is always top notch. She captures the best emotions, whether they are right or wrong or somewhere in between. As the reader, I always feel everything the character is feeling. It clearly makes her books a page turning obsession for me, since I get so sucked in I lose all sense of time and space, hence the lack of sleep, but it’s totally worth it!!

Lies of My Monster is another Rina Kent best. It’s a high stakes, angsty ride, with a jaw dropping cliffhanger book! Now, I can’t wait to jump back in and finish this trilogy to find out how everything comes together in the finale. I need answers and I know Rina will deliver. I’m anxiously excited.

She was sure Storm had to have a girlfriend, though he wasn’t married, as far as Jane knew. She constantly checked out his left hand for a ring. On the outside looking in, Storm North was the perfect catch, and she was…simply Jane. Plain Jane, as her ex used to call her. It was a nickname their daughter had picked up and taunted her with for most of her mean teenage years. Raising Rose by herself hadn’t been a walk in the park. At first, Jake had wanted to co-raise their daughter, but as the years went by, and he moved from one base to another, his trips to see her had become fewer and fewer. It affected Rose greatly. She’d felt abandoned, blaming her mom for the fact that her dad wasn’t around. She’d snuck out of their apartment all the time in high school and graduated by the skin of her teeth. Review:

I love Susan’s action and adventure novels, and this novella certainly contained heart racing moments, but what I loved even more than that was the comfortable moments in between. This relationship was about connecting on a deeper level beyond just the hot times. I really, really enjoyed this book!

Storm North and Jane Hamilton are both seasoned. While Storm had never been married, aside married to his job, Jane is once divorced and has a grown daughter. They both love their jobs and aren’t really looking to settle down, but when Storm finally notices Jane, like really notices her beyond just as another woman on base and as the mail carrier who delivers his mail, he is certainly interested.

It doesn’t take long for Storm to decide he would like to take Jane on a date, again, he’s older and I like that he doesn’t play games. I also respect that even though Jane has had a crush on Storm for quite a while, she doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to letting him know that she is interested.

I don’t want to give away the suspense leading up to their date, but once these two get together, I absolutely loved that Stoker included having them spend time snuggling, deeply respecting that not only were they just a bit older, but that they both had high pressure jobs and might be a little tired at the end of the day. I totally understood that. Yes, Susan had seriously smexy times included, but I LOVED the realism in this book too!

So Darn Good!!

I love this Wicked and Devoted series. I’m addicted to how Shayla weaves each duet in and out of her other books and series, but also is able to keep it a complete standalone and contained within its own bubble. It makes for a thrilling plot.

Wicked As Lies is a slow burn romance with a lot of sizzling chemistry between Zyron and Tessa. Even with a slow boil, I was heating up and fanning myself at all of their non-contact and pretty much drooling at all of the anticipation.

There is also a mole in the organization and Zyron is charged with flushing out who it is. Not only is the anticipation high on when Zy and Tessa will finally give in to their desires, but I’m dying to find out who is hurting their missions. Wicked As Lies is a total page turner!!

“I can’t believe you’re graduating tomorrow.” Lexi, my best friend and pseudo cousin, takes a hit off the joint she brought with her as a graduation gift and passes it to me.

I take a small hit, since I’m not usually one to get high, and nod. “This will be you next year.”

I pass the joint to Georgia, my other pseudo cousin and best friend. “Both of you, right?”

“Yep,” Lexi says, speaking for her younger sister like she often does. “Georgia took extra classes and we’ll be walking across the stage together. We’ll both be free from educational hell in twelve months.”

Without taking a hit, Georgia passes the joint to Lexi. “I’d hardly call it hell. We go to a private school that costs more a year than most pay for their house.” She rolls her eyes playfully. “Our lunch is catered and includes items like sushi and Thai, and we have a Starbucks… an actual Starbucks in the quad.”

I laugh at that, but don’t argue. She’s not wrong. Lexi and Georgia live in Los Angeles and attend one of the most prestigious private schools on the West Coast. Similar to the one I attend here in Las Vegas… well, did attend.

As of tomorrow at ten o’clock I will officially be a high school graduate. And come August I’ll be a freshman at the University of Las Vegas.

“Semantics.” Lexi takes another hit. “I can’t wait to be done with high school. It’s such a waste. I don’t need a diploma to do what I want to do.”

“You need one to go to college,” Georgia points out.

Lexi rolls her eyes. “Maybe I won’t go.” She shrugs, making Georgia and me laugh.

We all know Lexi is all talk. She’s a daddy’s girl through and through, and Tristan Scott has made it clear a college education is important, which means Lexi Scott will be getting one, whether she likes it or not.

Micaela is a strong character, even when she’s broken. She suffers a terrible loss at a very young age, which shapes how she reacts to anything for the rest of her life, but with all that takes place she is still strong in her will and fortitude.

Ryan and Micaela find and help one another, while discovering their own kind of love together. It’s a powerful story about family and love filled with lots of emotions.

Filled with brave men and stories about the strong women who wait for them.

It’s not easy to give your heart to a military man, especially when he has already pledged himself to serve his country first. A woman will always come second and not every woman is strong enough to wait while their man is serving their country.

This anthology is filled with stories about second chances, first loves, reunions and love revolving around the men and women who serve this great country of ours. They are all short stories that involve military heros and it is a great way to revisit some old worlds while meeting new friends, or perhaps meet a new author that you just haven’t had the chance or reading before or lots of different combinations.

I was lucky enough to have a little bit of both and enjoyed everything tucked within here. It had me scrolling through several author pages looking to see if there were more books coming, what back lists I would need to add to my ever growing TBR, and what I’ve possibly missed along the way. I hope you enjoy this anthology as much as I did.

He shielded her from the wind coming from the South, brushed her hair from her face and placed a soft kiss to her forehead. “Don’t be afraid. I’m not going to hurt you. I only want to help. Please, don’t be afraid. I’m here now. Nothing is going to harm you.”
Her arm wrapped around his waist, not reaching very far, as she snuggled in the safe space he’d created for her. Jason felt a twinge of regret that he’d been so harsh with her. Her head rested on his chest just below his chin. He ran his fingers through her hair, sifting, whispering things he’d heard as a child when he’d jump into bed at night with his mother when he had nightmares.
Whatever horror movie that had been playing in her head must have been something frightening. He knew what fear smelled like. He’d seen women panic and faint in the path of danger, unable to defend themselves or their loved ones. He’d seen it all too often, and all too often he’d not been able to save them either.
She leaned back, trying to see his face. “What language is that?”
Language?
He must have been chanting, or speaking the circular rhymes they’d sing as kids. It had come second nature and he couldn’t even remember what he’d said.
“Hawaiian. Something my grandmother taught me.”
His right palm brushed tentatively against the side of her face, and then he released her all at once, and stepped back. His arms fell to his sides.
“I’m sorry. It was a panic attack,” she mumbled.
“No, not exactly. The attack was when you passed out. You are scared of something
little one. That was pure, cold fear.” He sighed again, wanting to hold her once more, but resisted.
She wrapped the blanket around her.
“Are you in danger?” he asked, suddenly wishing he’d not been so forward.
“A little. But I’m far enough away from all that. Thank you, and I apologize how ridiculous I was.”
“No apology necessary. Fear does strange things to people sometimes. But you were brave. You fought well.”
“No I didn’t. I was pathetic.”
“You were difficult to stop. That speaks to your courage, not your skill.”
“Did I hurt you?”
Jason let her fingers reach for his cheek which had now turned warm and was probably swollen. She’d packed a good swing and the sting surprised him. He did not back away, allowing the touch. His heart was pounding, beating like the drums of his ancestors as she gracefully twisted her wrist and laced the backsides of her fingers across the side of his face all the way to his ear.
He could have easily taken her in his arms and he knew perhaps she’d let him kiss her, but he stood like a statue, feet planted in the sand, like the surfboards standing guard at Hanalei Bay. The wash of waves lapping on the shore stilled his restless and troubled soul, while the distance between their bodies remained. She had the touch of his grandmother and some of the older women of his community–the way she used to bless his cuts and bruises, especially the ones left by the two Samoan sisters.
This stranger was a healer, and yet Jason knew she didn’t understand yet what her true capacity was.
As he drove to his motel room, he knew that, if the Gods of his ancestors wanted him to meet her again, they’d create the opportunity. The empty tin sat next to him on the front seat of his rental Jeep, as if Thomas was witness to this magical connection he felt to her. Maybe Thomas was laughing at him.
He glanced down at the urn.
“We won’t speak of it.”
The urn obeyed.
But all the way back he couldn’t get the feel of her shaking body against him, the scent of her hair, the tiny beads of sweat at the sides of her cool forehead, and her probing but gentle fingers.
He thought about her while he showered, and then watched moonlight glisten on the water of the Gulf. He thought about her as he lay naked in his bed, his head propped against his forearm.
Jason had left the sliding glass door open a few inches so he could inhale the ocean air all night long, which was always his custom wherever in the world he traveled, if it was safe. He dreamt of the beaches back home, lush and full with the scent of flowers floating all around him. He thought about the tanned Polynesian girls he’d dated and made love to on the beach, their modest nakedness a thing of beauty and grace. He felt their full lips, and the smooth flat of their noses as they cuddled, giggled and whispered things to him. In those days, drunk on the discovery of sex, he didn’t realize how the ocean, the beach and a woman’s body could heal all those broken parts he could not.
He thought about the girls he met in Coronado who were a bit too fast for his tastes, and wanted everything now, hard and deep, leaving him aching for a simple touch of kindness or a word of wonder.
Like a metronome, the constant rhythm of the ocean sang him to sleep in stanzas stitched together by the calling of sea birds.
The last thought he had before he drifted off was that Thomas had brought him here to Sunset Beach. It was a bigger purpose than the final good-byes to his friend.
