Review:
Stacey Lynn writes books filled with all the feels. Her characters run the gamut of change and growth while still maintaining that underlying romance that I crave to give me all the warm fuzzies, but the depth she brings out of her hero/heroines is truly stunning. I’m always shocked on where her stories take me and I can never guess how it will play out. They are a true emotional delight to read.

In the beginning Dominick only sees himself as this one dimensional person. A screwed up hockey player with anger issues. He purposely keeps everyone he knows at arms length allowing them to believe that shallow characterization, but Dominick actually has layers, lots of beautiful layers.

He’s kind, caring, compassionate, patient, and even sweet, I know, a far cry from that one dimensional person he projects, but he hides it under years of pain and loneliness. Trauma caused by those who should have loved and protected him, but instead used him which didn’t help to break the cycle. Dom just needed the right person to help him see his potential, fulfill something outside of that circle of destruction, to begin uncovering those layers. A divorced mom and her son was someone he never would have placed his money on to pull him from his own darkness. But welcome to coaching junior hockey.

Holly is a single mother with the sweetest ten year old son, Ben. He’s in a junior hockey league and guess who his new coach is? Yeah, I’m sure you know. Ben is not the best player in his young division, but he has a ton of heart and Dominick sees his overflowing well of heart and spirit. He also doesn’t mind how Ben’s mom looks sitting in the stands, but Dominick isn’t coaching looking for a hookup, it’s part of his community service, but that’s part of the story you need to read for yourself.

Holly’s ex is a problem. One of those dads who seems to know better than a professional hockey player, total jerk, but luckily Dominick is patient with both Ben and Holly. He makes both of their lives easier and at the same time a bit more complicated, but once again you need to meet the ex and call him names just like I did. Feelings bloom between Holly and Dom in the most organic and thus begins a slow burn that made this story fun to read.

I honestly loved reading how much these characters grew and changed from the beginning all the way to the end, Witnessing Dominick become a better version of himself made the slow burn of their romance all worth it in the long run.

She worked in a shithole diner and probably lived in a shithole place when she was the daughter of a state judge, probably grew up in private schools with a Mercedes gifted to her on her sixteenth birthday and more money than my own parents had. This shouldn’t be her life.
She’s better than this. Better than her circumstance and I believe her. She just needs someone to help.
The memory of Melissa’s pleading eyes made me squeeze my own eyes shut. “Fucking bleeding heart.”
Since she could walk, she had a calling to save everything from kittens and frogs and turtles in the road to classmates and children where she worked.
One last request. Promise me.
I’d wanted to throttle her slim, pale throat.
I gripped the door handle and scowled at the silver-plated handle, before I threw it open.
“Happy now?” I asked, and somehow, I knew she was.
Lilly was still in the back when I entered. Where Dad said she always stood, there was an old laptop with notebooks spread open. I took the seat at the far end and waited, snagging a menu from the counter on my way.
The food was cheap, basic diner food, perfect for the clientele a place like this brought in. Greasy, thick burgers, patty melts, and Reubens. Sandwiches and burgers and two salad options.
It was late enough none of it appealed to me. Probably why my dad came for the pies.
Fortunately for me, he’d said they were the best he’d ever tasted, and I’d inherited his sweet tooth.
The creak of old, squeaky door hinges rang out and I lifted my head.
Lilly came out carrying a tray stacked with food, focused on the four-top. I didn’t move for fear of distracting her. Not a great first impression to make if she ended up covered in grease and condiments.
The guys at the table did more shoulder-slapping, whooping and hollering like they were watching the Super Bowl and not their food being delivered. I kept my eyes on them, waiting for one to give me a reason to put an end to all of them. The dark-haired guy would be first. He sat at the outer edge of the booth and as Lilly leaned forward to deliver a tray to the guy next to him, his hand hovered inches from her backside.
The blond across the table egged him on with a nod but she stood back, put space between them, and barked, “Even think of touching me and none of you are leaving with your dicks still attached to your body.”
“Oohh. I’ll show you mine happily,” one said, hands dropping to his lap.
She glared at him, resting bitch face I was certain she learned in prison firmly in place. It didn’t look right on her. Too hard. Too forced.
What would she have been like as a smiling, happy teenager before life was stolen from her?
Damn it. I felt it then. That pull my dad had when he first saw her.
She’d lost too much.

All the Beautiful Things is a beautiful story about family, friendship, and love. It jumps right back in at the continuation of Hudson and Lilly’s story, right where we left them swimming through a sea of lies and deception. This is not a standalone as we come to the second part of this duet. Hudson and Lilly now have to navigate through the sea to discover if their relationship is worth fighting for and build trust all over again.

Lilly, who has never had a basis for a loving relationship, doesn’t know who to trust or where to turn when she wakes up shattered by the lies the Valentine family have been feeding her. However, are they really lies or just omission of the truths? She doesn’t know how to wrap her head around everything she’s experienced as the entire time she’s spent with Hudson and his family has felt like a falsity. This is just the tip of the iceberg in the second part of this duet.

Lilly really gains a lot of strength and grows exponentially as she comes to trust herself in her decision making, but like I mentioned before those lies are just the tip of a bigger picture. Hudson is the man who stands out more in this book and what we learn about him and his family. The love he had for his sister, the foster kids that came and went, his mother that he lost, and his past relationships. She worked in a shithole diner and probably lived in a shithole place when she was the daughter of a state judge, probably grew up in private schools with a Mercedes gifted to her on her sixteenth birthday and more money than my own parents had. This shouldn’t be her life.
She’s better than this. Better than her circumstance and I believe her. She just needs someone to help.
The memory of Melissa’s pleading eyes made me squeeze my own eyes shut. “Fucking bleeding heart.”
Since she could walk, she had a calling to save everything from kittens and frogs and turtles in the road to classmates and children where she worked.
One last request. Promise me.
I’d wanted to throttle her slim, pale throat.
I gripped the door handle and scowled at the silver-plated handle, before I threw it open.
“Happy now?” I asked, and somehow, I knew she was.
Lilly was still in the back when I entered. Where Dad said she always stood, there was an old laptop with notebooks spread open. I took the seat at the far end and waited, snagging a menu from the counter on my way.
The food was cheap, basic diner food, perfect for the clientele a place like this brought in. Greasy, thick burgers, patty melts, and Reubens. Sandwiches and burgers and two salad options.
It was late enough none of it appealed to me. Probably why my dad came for the pies.
Fortunately for me, he’d said they were the best he’d ever tasted, and I’d inherited his sweet tooth.
The creak of old, squeaky door hinges rang out and I lifted my head.
Lilly came out carrying a tray stacked with food, focused on the four-top. I didn’t move for fear of distracting her. Not a great first impression to make if she ended up covered in grease and condiments.
The guys at the table did more shoulder-slapping, whooping and hollering like they were watching the Super Bowl and not their food being delivered. I kept my eyes on them, waiting for one to give me a reason to put an end to all of them. The dark-haired guy would be first. He sat at the outer edge of the booth and as Lilly leaned forward to deliver a tray to the guy next to him, his hand hovered inches from her backside.
The blond across the table egged him on with a nod but she stood back, put space between them, and barked, “Even think of touching me and none of you are leaving with your dicks still attached to your body.”
“Oohh. I’ll show you mine happily,” one said, hands dropping to his lap.
She glared at him, resting bitch face I was certain she learned in prison firmly in place. It didn’t look right on her. Too hard. Too forced.
What would she have been like as a smiling, happy teenager before life was stolen from her?
Damn it. I felt it then. That pull my dad had when he first saw her.

Lilly finds herself sentenced to ten years in prison for vehicular manslaughter at the age of eighteen. At an age when others are heading off to college, getting married, starting a career, moving into their first home, starting a family, the start of adulthood. Whereas, Lilly is navigating through the penal system and surviving her young adult years with every freedom, choice, and option taken away from her. Everything she used to take for granted has been stripped away and when Lilly is finally released she faces a reality that she has no idea how to be an adult on her own. This part of story hit me hard every time Lilly was lost in navigating the adult world. The years she lost was, of course, devastating, but the exact time frame was even more so.

When Lilly meets the Valentine family there is a lot of mystery surrounding them. Mr. Valentine offers to help Lilly, and given her recent circumstances she’s leary of taking any handouts. However, it isn’t only Mr. Valentine, but also his son, Hudson, that gets under her skin. Lilly hasn’t had anyone on her side in years so taking help doesn’t come easy. Why would mere strangers want to help? Why would a man like Hudson have any interest in her? What will happen if she takes their help?

We are only in the first part of the duet and there are still a lot of questions to answer. I’ve been pulled into this story and I’m curious as to the real reasons why the Valentine’s want to help. I also want to see Lilly continue to blossom the longer she’s out of jail. The entire storyline has been intriguing and I’ve loved this book and can’t wait for the rest.

Another set of drinks arrive at our table, served by a pair of small hands, with a tiny little broken heart tattoo on a ring finger and dark purple nail polish.
“Thanks, Gigi,” I say, lifting my head and grinning at her.
She smirks at me. “No problem, hotshot. Dad wanted me to give you these but says it’s last call.”
“Damn,” Jason groans. “I didn’t realize it was so late.”
“You can take off. I’m good.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah.”
He turns to Gigi who’s taken our empties and is starting to walk away.
I try. I try really hard to not let my gaze drop to her short, cut-off sweat shorts, to the length of her legs beneath them. The shape of her calves or to notice the dark red polish on her toenails.
I fail.
Miserably.
There’s something so damn attractive about her petite size.
I grip my new beer bottle harder and take a healthy swig.
“Hey Gigi,” Jason calls out. “Keep this loser company for me so he doesn’t get shit-faced before practice tomorrow?”
“Me?” She’s turned, gaze bouncing from me to Jason and she frowns. “You need my help?”
“No—”
“Yes—” Jason says at the exact time I disagree.
She smirks at Jason. “Seems to me he doesn’t need it.”
“Sometimes this asshole doesn’t know what he needs.” He slaps the table and slides out, holding out his arm in a gesture for Gigi to take his spot.
“Jason—”
He shrugs and holds out his fist. “I’ll pay the tab. You get home safely, yeah?”
“Yeah,” I grumble and return his fist pump.
“And you’ll thank me for this someday, too.”
I watch him go, frowning.
What the fuck does that mean?
“I can pretend to sit here until he leaves if you want to be alone.”
Her voice does something to me. Like a bug is happily leaping in my gut when she looks down at me, all that teal hair and new nose ring and tattoo peeking out from the wide collar of her sweatshirt.
It’s the collar I’m noticing. And the tattoo.
Not the thin, white strap of her bra.
Shit.
“You can sit. Please. You want Jason’s last beer?”
“Nah.” Her nose crinkles and the soft light above the bar flints on her nose ring. I quickly look away as she slides in. “I’ve never acquired the taste for beer. No matter what kind it is, it always tastes like wet cardboard.”
“You know what cardboard tastes like?”
“Yeah. Like beer.” She grins.
I grin back.
This girl is funny. Well-traveled.
Divorced. Cute. And fun.
The exact kind of temptation I do not need in my life right now. Yet as I sit across from her, taking in every little nuance about her like the freckle on the back of her hand, that broken heart tattoo… I can’t for the life of me think of an excuse to leave.

So many feels!! Stacey Lynn writes big, bad sports players with these huge hearts and broken souls who need their hopes and dreams rebuilt like no other. Sebastian completely tore me apart and Gigi helped put him and me back together!!

I love love. It’s no secret. It’s one of the reasons why I love reading so much, but most certainly one of the reasons why I read the genre I do. In real life when I meet people I adore hearing their own personal love story just as much as I love reading new ones every day. In Hard Checked you get two and a half stories in one book, but just like life you aren’t one person living life all by yourself. People come into your life affecting how you live your life, your moods, the direction you may want to take, so on and so forth. In Hard Checked we begin with Sebastian facing changes which include the end of his marriage and we meet Gigi who is home from traveling abroad after she has come out of an amblicle divorce herself.

These two have very different experiences when it comes to marriage, family, life in general, but Sebastian and Gigi are drawn together at first by an underlying chemistry, but the attraction grows in their continued friendship.

While Sebastian is struggling with the dissolution of his marriage he seeks out answers, friendship, honestly he doesn’t really know, but Gigi gives him a sense of peace while he is truly downhearted at losing the one woman he’s ever loved. Sebastian has only ever dated his wife. He’s only ever been with one woman, so the thoughts of his wife leaving him have truly left his heart broken and his mind reeling. This is the one story that weaves in and out throughout the book and while you are rooting for Sebastian and Gigi your heart is also completely breaking for Sebastian over what he’s lost in his marriage. He’s completely torn in two even spending time with Gigi, but I promise you there is no cheating in this book and their friendship and ultimately relationship grows organically. Stacey Lynn is a masterful genius at pulling heartstrings over every emotion when it comes to this big strong hockey player.

We get glimpses into Gigi’s history and what her marriage was like, which is the half story I was alluding to, but her experience jumping into the commitment world was completely different than Seb’s. Gigi is much more of a free spirit who has a huge open heart, making her a great bartender who’s never met a stranger. She’s there to listen and offer up advice if Sebastian is looking for it, but more than anything she enjoys spending time with him which she will take over nothing at all. When things progress pass the friendship zone, she knows it could never be something serious, as they are just friends but maybe destiny has other plans for them.

Hard Checked is a touching, very emotional story that by the end will warm your heart and bring a huge smile to your face.

I scoop more chicken onto a folded chunk of naan and moan as I savor the taste. There are some decent restaurants where I live, all within walking distance, which is a bonus, but none are as good as Tandor’s. I can’t even piece together what makes it so delicious but it’s mouth-watering amazing.

“Jesus, Tessa. Can you not sound like you’re having an orgasm when you eat?”

I choke on my chicken and wash it down with my water. “Don’t like it, you can leave.”

“But then I won’t be able to share with you why I’m here.”

The chicken I’ve devoured rolls in my stomach. Obviously it’s not because he’s a nice guy. I lean back in my chair. “What is it?”

“Who are you?” I don’t like calling her the woman. I’ve wondered her name for months since she started appearing in that doorway so close to mine.

She turns to me and in her arms is the baby. She’s holding a bottle and the baby is drinking. Quiet little sounds come from it and she grins down at the baby in her arms before tilting her head at me.

“What?”

She must want money if she knows my name. Perhaps she’s a fan. A puck bunny—that’s what my teammates call the girls who follow players and only want one thing from them.

“How did you know?” I wish she wasn’t so pretty. Sometimes it hurts to talk when all I want to do is look at her.

She points to an envelope on the table. The note.

“It’s on the outside. I didn’t know if it was your name or the baby’s, so I took a guess. Are you… are you okay?”

“A stranger shows up at my door with a baby in her arms, saying it’s mine. How okay am I supposed to be?” I wander to the table while I ask.

I’m surprised by her gentle laugh.

“I suppose this isn’t your typical Friday night.”

She is funny. If I didn’t think I might throw up, I might laugh. No. This is not my typical Friday night. Mine are for resting. Not life-changing drama.

I say nothing and grab the envelope. I stare at it for a moment. Perhaps if I do not open it, I can pretend this didn’t happen. My fingers shake as I tear it open.

The envelope is larger than normal and thick and I’m careful as I pull out several folded papers.

The top one is the most important though as I instantly see my name, written in scrolling black ink.

Mikah Lutzgo has to be the sweetest hockey players I’ve ever read. At twenty-three he’s dedicated his life to playing hockey, never dated, and only been with one woman when he lost his virginity. Well, you know that saying you hear in health class “it only takes one time” Mikah is that statistic. Mikah now has a son and has no idea what he’s doing.

Paisley lives across the hall from Mikah and hasn’t even said hello since she moved in, but when she hears crying coming from the hallway and she finds a baby carrier outside of his door, they finally meet. As a graduate student Paisley didn’t see her life exactly playing out like it has, playing house with a hot hockey player and his brand new son, but she also can’t say that she is complaining.

For the first time in both Mikah and Paisley’s lives they find their way navigating new waters adapting everything they knew all around a precious little boy. Mikah is sweet and honest and his inexperience with women is so endearing. His willingness to be a good father and do everything right for his son will melt your heart into a pile of goo and then add in his intensity in the bedroom and you will be a complete goner. Mikah is one of my favorite sports players ever!

A chill skittered down my arms and to my toes until my body erupted in goose bumps. Hairs at the back of my neck stood on end. Someone was watching me.

I stopped moving so quickly I bumped into Gina and reached out to keep her from falling onto the dance floor.

“Sorry!” I called out, but I didn’t look at her as she resettled to her feet.

My gaze was focused, skipping from the men on the dance floor to the outer circle of guys who stayed close, probably couldn’t shimmy their hips to a beat if their life depended on it but enjoyed watching the show, to the stairs…the upper level.

Straight to him.

He was there. Hands curled around a silver railing. Buttoned up white shirt un-tucked from jeans and sleeves rolled to his elbows. Casual.

Commanding.

Long dark hair on top, swept to the side but long enough it could also fall into his eyes.

I simply felt his pull. Felt him.

I stood still and raised my drink in his direction.

His response was a nod. So minuscule it was difficult to see from the distance but even then, I knew he was the one watching me.

And if he wanted to watch? I’d give him the show of his life.

Two men flanked him, one shoved his shoulder, the other crossed his arms over his massive chest. The men were huge.

Yes. That was going to be him.

If he could gain my attention with a look from a hundred feet away, he was definitely the kind of guy who could do other things to me even more intensely.

Decidently Dirty with ALL the Feels Read!!! Oh boy, did this book keep me up late at night reading!!! Loved it, loved it, loved it!!

This is the first Stacey Lynn book I’ve read and I can’t begin to express how much I loved this book. I was blown away by the storyline, the naughty bits, and how well crafted it was.

Connor was the right amount of cocky, detached jock that grew at the right emotional speed and displayed the perfect vulnerability that made him ultra irresistible.

Brenna was also the perfect mix of innocent wrapped with enough sultry sinner to keep Conner’s interest, yet just enough emotional stuntness to also grow right along with him.

These two were the perfect combination for their non-relationship/relationship (whatever they were calling it day by day) and it was glorious to watch them both come out of their cocoons. Whether it came to dating or bedroom skills this couple continued to blow me away with how they handled situations.

Their similarities and differences pulled me in and made this a page turner late into the night.

Cocky Player is a must read and can be read as a complete standalone (it was for me since this was my very first, but won’t be my last).
