Patty smiled when Shane leaned on her as she washed the dishes. His freshly dyed hair draped over her shoulder. “Do you need something?”

So far, the 405 South is backed up all the way to the 101. So, if you are going into Hollywood this morning, you are going to be late for that audition. Also, there is an injury crash on the Eastbound 10. So, if you are heading into downtown LA, you might want to bring a magazine or get some knitting done. If you are going to LAX, forget it, call mom back east and tell her you will be driving out instead. Just Kidding! Any way, this is Katie Carlson with the Los Angeles mid-morning traffic report. Enjoy your commute everybody, NOT!

As the blare of the clock radio on the night table jolted her awake, Shari Barnes rubbed her eyes, blew her long brown hair out of her face, and snuggled into Nathan Townsend’s chest. She curled her body around his middle and took a deep whiff of his salty, masculine neck.
 
 
But she couldn’t ignore the voice on the radio.
 
 
“Monday morning traffic,” she sighed.
 
 
Nathan matched the sigh and put his arms around her. “At least you don’t have to drive over the hill.”
 
 
“Yeah, I would just die if I had to drive into Beverly Hills every day to work in a beautiful office.” Shari giggled and disappeared under their thick blue comforter for a few more moments of sleepy-headed bliss. She felt Nathan stretch up, and a moment later the radio shut off. Then he slid down next to her in the single bed they shared in their Studio City apartment, a few blocks north of Ventura Boulevard. The constant drone and rumble of another L.A. morning came clearly through the open window: cars honking, rock music blaring, the frantic scurrying sounds of the film shoot a few blocks away. Shari ran her bare feet up the inside of Nathan’s thigh.
 
 
He jumped. “Shit, your feet are cold.” He pushed her legs off of him.
 
 
“What time is it?” she murmured between kisses.
 
 
“Um, seven.” He nuzzled her neck and she felt him becoming erect against her.
 
 
“No time for that!” She threw off the covers. “Gotta be at work on time for once; gotta get my asp out of bed.”
 
 
“There’s a snake in the bed?” Nathan grabbed her with both hands and gave her belly gentle nips.
 
 
“Yeah, of the one-eyed variety.” Shari leaped to the floor and padded naked into the bathroom. She turned the hot water in the shower to high and stepped in, filling the small bathroom with steam.
 
 
She had just poured a green drop of shampoo into her palm and was running her hands together when the flimsy yellow and white shower curtain flew back and Nathan grinned in at her. She smiled back, surprised by neither his arrival nor the partial hard-on that preceded him.
 
 
“Mind if we join you?” he asked.
 
 
“There’s enough shampoo for everybody,” Shari said as she rubbed her hands across her scalp.
 
 
He stepped into the stall, pulled the curtain closed and began to lather her hair for her. She put her hands on his back, feeling the taut muscles and the water streaming there, but did not reach down between them. It took him about five seconds to realize it and hold her away.
 
 
“You okay?”
 
 
“Fine….”
 
 
“Don’t lie; I can always tell when you have something on your mind.”
 
 
“You know me better than I know me,” she said.
 
 
“You know it.” He pushed her wet hair over her shoulders. “Come on, give.”
 
 
“I was thinking maybe I should get a second job.”
 
 
“You’re worrying about money again?”
 
 
“Well, I have to shoot my student thesis film this year or I won’t graduate. But where am I going to get the money I need?”
 
 
“How much do you need?”
 
 
“At least five figures.”

 

 

 
Lindy S. Hudis is a graduate of New York University, where she studied drama at Tisch School of the Arts. She is the author of several titles, including her romance suspense novel, Weekends, her “Hollywood” story City of Toys, and her crime novel, Crashers. She is also the author of an erotic short story series, “The S&M Club” and “The Mile High Club”. Her short film “The Lesson” was screened at the Seattle Underground Film Festival and Cine-Nights in 2000. She is also an actress, having appeared in the television daytime drama “Sunset Beach”. Abaddon also sat at an angle, crossed his legs and took her hand which lay along the back of the couch. The fact remained that the beloved being sitting across from him with her long legs folded under her and her cute belly swelling under her robe was the ruler of the celestial kingdom, and there was no way this discussion would end until she was informed about everything she felt she needed to know. “You never give up, do you?” he asked with a smile.
 
“We’re more alike than you think,” Aranes replied and got straight to the point. “It is important that I know what is happening.”
 
Abaddon nodded.
 
“You’re right. I didn’t want to tell you so that you wouldn’t get upset, but I’m obviously making you worry more. Besides, you’re the brains in this mission.”
 
“And you its executor,” Aranes added, “and to carry it out we must remain united. So, will you tell me what happened today?”
 
“Lucifer appeared in my office today.”
 
Aranes had expected the Dark Lord to make that move.
 
“What did he say?” she asked calmly.
 
“He tried to create moral dilemmas in me about how similar Angels and Demons are in temperament. And, of course, he wanted to warn me that the attacks are about to begin. He claimed that he wasn’t going to pursue you and that there was no way the Celestials would help me,” Abaddon scoffed.
 
“Do you have any questions about the differences in the Ethereals’ traits?”
 
“No, you’ve explained them to me.”
 
“Alright,” Aranes said and continued: “As for his intentions, never think that he will abandon his goal. He is behind every attack. In one way or another, he will be the one controlling the actions of those who are after me.”
 
“I don’t doubt it,” Abaddon agreed. He wanted to ask her what she thought about the Celestials helping in an emergency, but he didn’t so that he wouldn’t seem insecure, both to her and to anyone monitoring their discussion.
 
“And who appeared just before?” Aranes continued with her questions.
 
“Lyla.”
 
“I thought it would be her,” Aranes said blankly. “Whoever begins the attacks will have to find out what powers you have and, above all, how quickly you sense the appearance of an Ethereal. That’s an important factor. A split second can mean victory for the one who senses an approaching enemy.”
 
“So that’s why she vanished without attacking,” Abaddon deduced. “Do you think Lucifer sent her?”
 
“Most likely. His quick return to action and your unknown powers have made my would-be persecutors hesitant. They don’t know what to expect, and I’m sure that the Dark Lord warned them to stay away from me. But as the time approaches for me to give birth, they will all be forced to make a move. They have too much to gain to give up, and I’m no longer the only prize they are all trying to lay claim to.” She then paused, wondering if she should tell him the harsh truth. Finally, she decided that her partner had to know about what was to come. “Some of them are after our child,” she went on as indifferently as she could. “Before or after the birth, it doesn’t matter. The baby’s vital organs are completely developed and it will survive even if it is removed violently—for those, of course, who want it alive. But, my blood alone is enough to overturn the natural laws of the planet.”
 
Abaddon imagined dark beings ripping Aranes’ belly open and was consumed by a black rage. His irises and pupils changed, his eyes becoming like smoldering coals in whose depths burned a blazing red fire. Gray energy poured out of his eye sockets, spreading all over his now frighteningly harsh face.
 
“Whoever dares to mess with you will have nowhere to hide in all the dimensions,” he roared, his voice sounding as if it was harnessing all the power of a dark abyss.
 
Aranes blinked, feeling bewildered. She had never seen him like this before.
 
He was a Dark Angel, but he was still a Celestial. As the commander of thousands of Defenders who, like him, had been in danger of finding themselves under Lucifer’s thumb, he had managed to control his rage and keep his warriors in Elether. Where was that part of him? Was it the absence of any memory defining the traits of Angels that was at fault, or had her secret name created an entity that was darker than he was before his incarnation? Right now, he was more like a Demon. Was he doing it on purpose to scare those who pursued her? She hoped so. Otherwise, he would evolve into an uncontrollable entity and his unique abilities would make him a danger to the balance of forces.
 
Uneasy about what her precious partner was becoming, she burrowed into his arms and hugged him.
 
“Please, Abaddon, calm down,” she said tenderly, trying to make him see sense.
 
He realized he had unnerved her and came to his senses at once. He wrapped his arms around her and rested his cheek on the crown of her head. As soon as he breathed in her beloved familiar fragrance, his face began to look human again.
 
“Forgive me, my love. I didn’t mean to upset you,” he said, stroking her back reassuringly. “The thought that those awful creatures could harm you and our child drives me mad.”
 
Aranes leaned back and looked at him with a troubled expression.
 
“Rage will lead you wrong.”
 
“No, but it will lead to the elimination of anyone who messes with you two,” the Dark Angel threatened darkly, hoping those entities were watching them this moment.
 
“When you act, you should be fully aware of what you do. Rage strips you of any control and makes you easy prey to be manipulated by a calm entity,” Aranes advised him for the umpteenth time.
 
“I know,” said Abaddon, checking his irritation for her.
 
It was his weak point. As a human, he had managed his emotions sensibly. But ever since he had learned that his adversary was the greatest of Demons, he had trouble reining in his anger. Being aware of the problem, he had made an effort and had made great progress in handling the fury that arose in him just at the sound of Lucifer’s name. Some small slips were painless, but the total loss of control could carry a heavy price. As much as his duty to protect the worlds’ most precious entity made him anxious, he knew he had to control himself.
 
Aranes rested her head on his shoulder and put her palm at the center of his chest to send her energy into him and calm him.
 
“You know that I can feel it when you do your magic, right?” Abaddon said, now in a better mood.
 
“Don’t feel so proud; many humans feel it when energy flows into their body,” she teased.
 
Abaddon covered her palm with his own.
 
“What a pity. And here I thought I was special!”
 
Aranes smiled.
 
“I see you’re better. Can we go to bed now? I feel tired.”
 
Abaddon didn’t need any urging. Her needs came before anything else.
 
“Of course, my heart,” he said gladly. He got up off the couch, lifted her in his arms and walked to the bed.
 
“Can you please stop carrying me?” Aranes asked as she untied the belt on her robe. “I’m pregnant, not an invalid.”
 
“Nope, I’m not doing you that favor,” he replied adamantly. He dematerialized her robe and materialized it once again on the quilted bench at the foot of the bed.
 
“And undressing me?” she added.
 
A roguish smile formed on Abaddon’s lips.
 
“Especially not that. It’s my favorite.”
 
He deposited her on the bed, lay down next to her and covered her with the comforter.
 
Aranes snuggled up to him.
 
“Then let me not deprive you of it,” she said, her soft voice sounding tired.
 
“Goodnight, love of my soul,” the Dark Angel replied.
 
“You couldn’t have said it more aptly,” she muttered with her eyes closed.
 
Abaddon took her hand and rested it on his chest.
 
“Yes, it fits perfectly. Now go to sleep.”…

“I don’t need taking care of, you know,” Patricia said when they stepped outside. Her voice came out low, a whisper, which nonetheless projected in the still warmth of the night.

 

 
After several seconds without a response from him, she turned sideways. He stared ahead, his profile stoic. Finally, she heard his deep intake of breath.
 
He looked at her, and thunder might as well have struck after the flash of…annoyance? Impatience? Incredulity?
 
“Are you always on the defensive?”
 
Aggravation. Despite the balmy, breezeless air, Patricia shivered. Perhaps she should have been scared, but she wasn’t. Somehow, Ty didn’t strike her as the kind of man whose patience wore thin as easily as wind blew away flakes of cotton. Yet, she also realized she’d pushed a button or two between yesterday and today.
 
She began to say something, but her response staggered as she realized she didn’t know how to answer his question. She sighed. “It’s always been just me and my mum. I guess I’m simply used to having to stick up for myself.”
 
His look softened. “Trish, I know you’re a strong woman. Hell, it’s one of the things I admire about you. But did it occur to you I only wanted some alone time with you?”
 
She couldn’t help it. She giggled. “You could have just said so.”
 
“In that case, how about this?”
 
He faced her fully, subjecting her to a powerful blast of his magnetism. Electricity jolted through her, and she realized he’d touched her; warmth infused her body where his hands bracketed her waist.
 
The next instant, she was plastered against him, her soft abdomen privy to the state of his desire. His heated breath wafted over her face, a mix of him and the whiskey he’d had at dinner. An avalanche of sensations, fierce and unrelenting hit her in the gut.

Ty held up the bottle of water he’d taken with him from dinner. “Here—”
 
“Please stop talking,” she gasped, turning away from him. “I need a minute.”
 
“This could be food poisoning. You need a doctor.”
 
“I don’t, and it’s not food poisoning. It’s the alcohol.”
 
“You didn’t drink.”
 
“No, but you did.”
 
His features assumed a frown, his confusion absolute. “You’re sick because I drank?”
 
“I’m not sick. I’m—”
 
She stopped abruptly, tossing different possible explanations in her head, all of them partial truths. No matter what anyone said, keeping quiet and outright lying were not the same. She wasn’t prepared to do the latter, but she’d spoilt her chances of doing the former.
 
“I’m…uh.”
 
His eyes narrowed. “You’re what?”
 
“I’m…”

Zack stood next to a nearby table. He smiled at Abigail’s giddy expression. She was most definitely surprised. Her gift laid just in reach. He had hidden the small box in a pair of socks for the past week.
 
He’d planned to mail it to her. For a change, his usual procrastination worked in his favor. He hoped she liked it. Since he finally made good money, he’d purchased what had spoken to him.
 
“Hey,” Abigail said as she stood in front of Zack. “Did you help?”
 
He couldn’t meet her eyes, afraid that would portray his feelings. “Yeah. Happy birthday.” He reached over and lifted her gift. “I got you something.” When he turned, his gaze drifted to the new tattoo. Oh, fuck! He groaned to himself but hid it well. “That’s beautiful.” He stared at her cleavage. The tattoo was prominent.
 
“Thanks.” She threw her arms around him and cringed when her breasts pressed against him. “Was hoping you’d like it.” She pulled back a bit. “Should I open it now?”
 
Kyle appeared behind her and glared at Zack. “Food’s ready.” He waited until she let Zack go. “Your dad’s looking for you.”
 
“OK.” Abigail smiled and followed Kyle, who she noticed was angry.
 
Zack sighed with relief. Then he realized she hadn’t taken his present. He put it back on the table and sat down. His stomach was doing flips. Food would likely worsen it. His gaze fell on her. She hugged partygoers and laughed. She’s happy, and that’s all that matters.
 
His eyes roamed her body unconsciously and stopped at her tits several times. The tattoo was eye catching and looked amazing on her.
 
“Should I make you a plate?” Shane asked Abigail as she greeted more guests. “We got most of your favorites.”
 
She smiled, excited. “After presents?”
 
“Eighteen hasn’t changed you, huh?” Shane hugged her. “How about you open my gift, then we eat?”
 
She jumped in his arms. “You bought me another present?” She thought the tattoo was her gift. “Can I open it? Please?”
 
“Yeah.” Shane led her to a table with a few wrapped boxes. He selected the ones from him. “Hope you like it.”
 
Curious, she tore the paper. When she saw the box, she squealed. “You really got it? You said I was too young.”
 
“Trying to throw you off.” Her happiness meant everything to him. “This too.”
 
Abigail was beyond grateful. He had bought her a professional camera and lenses. “I can’t believe this.” She hugged him fiercely. “Thank you so much!” She hoped she had the chance to use it that week.
 
“You can open a few more later.” Shane directed her toward the food. “We got vegetable lasagna.”
 
“You’re the best, Daddy.”
 
Most of the bands set to play that day attended the party. Alcohol prevailed, but the drinkers were respectful of the occasion. Music played in the background. Everyone had good clean fun for a change. It didn’t compare to the parties they normally had. Shane was grateful it had worked out so well.
 
Soon after they handed cake out, the party started to wind down. Crew members needed to finish setting up the stage. Zack figured he should help, so he followed Dave toward the exit.
 
“Wait!” Abigail ran up to him when he reached the door. “You’re leaving? I didn’t open your gift.”
 
He smiled. “Right, sorry.” Instinctively, he checked to see if anyone was watching them. No one paid them any mind. He pulled the box out of his jacket pocket. “It’s just something that made me think of you.”
 
Excited, Abigail tore the wrapping and stared. Her pulse raced. He got me jewelry? She opened it slow. “Oh my God!” The pink heart diamond pendant was gorgeous. “I love it.” Unable to hold back, she jumped on him and wrapped her legs around his waist.
 
It shocked Zack when she kissed him. However, he automatically embraced her. His cock swelled when she eased her tongue into his mouth. He didn’t resist and delved his into hers. A soft moan slipped out as her hand gripped his back. Then he came to his senses and forced her to her feet.
 
“I’m sorry.” Zack backed away from her. “That was… That was…”
 
She grinned. “Amazing. I love how you kiss.” She moved closer and freed the necklace from the box. “Put it on me. Please.”
 
With shaky hands, Zack laid the pendant on her chest, then closed the clasp. His gaze went to her breasts again. The heart settled right between them, nestled perfectly. “Wow.”
 
“It’s perfect.” She hugged him again, that time on her feet. “I love you too.”
 
His eyes opened wide. “Wait, no. That’s not what it means.” He stepped back. Fear gripped him. “It’s just a birthday gift.”
 
Her reaction made him realize how extravagant and significant the pendant was. He’d purchased it without thinking of that. The impulse to please her had overruled his mind.
 
“I’m sorry if you misunderstood.”
 
Her eyes watered for a few seconds. “It’s OK. I love it.” She hoped it meant he wanted to be with her. “Thank you.” She turned and rushed to the bathroom to get herself together.
 
Zack watched her until the door closed. He hated to hurt her. I need a drink. He sighed. No. I need to work. As planned, he left and headed for the stage.

Anyone who knows me could tell you, I am a friendly kind of person, never met a stranger and take up conversations anywhere at any time. I work hard, and my mind never seems to shut down, as I wake up often in the middle of the night with ideas pouring out and demanding to be dealt with. Of course that means much of my books were written in the middle of the night.
I grew up and still live in the great state of Texas where everything is bigger, where we have warm weather and a central location. I love my state, my town, and my family, which includes my four sons, my significant other, and many friends as well.

Heart hammering in his chest, hands shaking, Shannon handed the attendant his ticket. The light on the scanner turned green and beeped, and he almost wept with joy. “Enjoy your flight, sir.” He nodded, took the piece of paper, and stuffed it into his jeans pocket, forcing himself to walk the long hallway to the plane and not run for his life, which was basically what he was doing. By now, Bruce would know what Shannon had done—that he wasn’t at work and he wouldn’t be coming home.
 
It had taken a year of patience and planning, convincing Bruce that he truly wanted to volunteer three days a week at a local homeless shelter. Then he saved every spare penny he could collect to purchase his ticket to freedom. His steps faltered when he remembered the last time he’d tried to leave. It was the angriest he’d ever seen Bruce, and that was saying a lot since the last three years of his life were consumed by his once-gentle lover’s anger and twisted pleasures. The early stages of their relationship were the happiest times of Shannon’s life. Bruce was gorgeous and kind; he listened to Shannon—seemed to support his aspirations to become a dancer and make a better life for himself far away from the home he shared with his emotionally distant parents that paid more attention to alcohol and arguments than to their fifteen-year-old son. “It’s okay, no worries.” He exhaled sharply, the tension in his shoulders slowly releasing. He couldn’t be so jumpy; it might draw attention he desperately needed to avoid. But he couldn’t let his guard down either. Bruce and his driver, Tuan—also known as Shannon’s warden—could very well be in the terminal that very minute searching for him. Willing his body to relax, Shannon managed to put one foot in front of the other until he was tucked away in his window seat, his backpack that held everything he now owned under the seat in front of him.
 
The last thing he expected was the flood of emotions that slammed into him the moment the plane was in the air: Relief at not being caught this time and dragged back to Bruce’s condo—to be beaten and starved for weeks until he begged for mercy and promised he’d never try to leave again. Sadness for the minuscule amount of love he rarely received that he was now losing. Panic, frustration, and self-loathing…why? Now that he was finally close enough to the light at the end of the tunnel to flip the switch, did he really have the strength and courage to do so? How would he live? Hell, where would he live? He was an eighteen-year-old with no job, no home, no family or friends, and the few thousand dollars he’d managed to save over the past twelve months wouldn’t go far. He’d left his wallet in his locker at work with everything except his ID and Social Security card still inside. He’d removed the Sim card from his iPhone, stomped on it, and then flushed it down the toilet. His backpack held several changes of clothes, toiletries, a well-worn copy of Pride and Prejudice, and a cheap knockoff MP3 player he’d picked up at a shop in the airport since he’d left his iPhone in the cab, on purpose.
 
Reaching up, Shannon pulled the hood of his jacket over his head and leaned his forehead against the cool glass window, staring down at the specks of light as the plane climbed higher into the sky, carrying him farther away from Seattle. Tears blurred his vision, but he welcomed them. Finally, he was free.

A note from the author…
I hope you enjoy Frank and Taylor’s story. It’s been a long road to get them settled, but I’m happy with where this story has taken them. When I started this book, the intent was to write a stand-alone story, but that has changed. Characters continually evolve throughout the writing process, and there are several characters in the book that want to tell their story. I’ve grown especially fond of Rory and I can’t wait to write his book, which will take us back to when he first joined the Bureau, and continue on to his happy ever after.
 
Please be advised: This is a May/December romance, and as in life, there are sexual situations that take place prior to the main characters finding their way to one another. This is not gratuitous; it is meant to show character growth and self-realization. There is absolutely no cheating.

I get my inspiration from life experiences, movies, television, other authors, and music. Music is definitely a big influence on my writing. I can hear a song and it can inspire an entire book for me. I listen to it while I’m driving or before I start writing and it keeps me inspired. I like to put music in my books, even if it’s just one song the characters listen to or hear at some point. Sometimes music has gotten me through the really tough times in my life and that’s why it inspires me.
I like to write fast-paced, steamy romance reads. I like for my males to be alpha-males and my heroines to be strong, but both need to have one weakness- each other. I am an avid reader. I absolutely love romance books!

I am an author that doesn’t fit well into any category. The books I write have romance in them but they are not your typical read. Not all fairytales have a happy ending and in my books, it is always hard for the characters to stay together. They really have to work for it. There is usually a lot of drama and/or suspense also.
