“Oh, look at who’s opening up to us now, hon,” Knox teases. “No one special for the beautiful toymaker like you, Avery?”

Beautiful? I blush at his compliment. “Nah, I’m too busy raising a broody teenager.” But even before Whit became a part of my everyday life, nothing stuck. 

“Seriously, what’s the story? If you were mine, I’d never let you go.” My eyes dart over to Rowan to gauge his reaction. Certainly, this should fill him with rage and jealousy. He’s nodding as if he agrees with his boyfriend.

“Yeah, same here,” Rowan chimes in.

“But you’re…I mean, you don’t like girls?”

Rowan continues to stare at me, but Knox’s laughter diverts my attention from Rowan’s deep azure eyes. 

“Did I miss the memo, Ro? That we don’t like girls anymore?” His question still has laughter accompanying it.

“Yeah, I didn’t get it. Still find them pretty cute. One may say even beautiful.” Is there a flirt in Rowan’s serious demeanor?

No, overwhelm me, I want to say.

Maddox:

The door opens, and I’m sure it’s my number two again, who’s going to do Chadwick’s job for him and tell me to man up. I look up and meet the familiar eyes of the little girl I was with once. But she’s all woman as her bustier is showing me the cleavage my face has been between just once. This depravity was the lowest of lows to where I slunk. And I don’t have high standards as far as morality. Depravity never bothered me, not until I met her and had my way with this gem. She has done me in for any other woman.

“Are you avoiding me?” she asks.

I should kick her out. She isn’t collared, and even though many have tried to collar her, Jewel has her sights set on only one person. And she is looking at him.

Maguire
“I love this place!” she yells over the loud music, asking about my time here with my son, when he was alive. “You and Scott came here, often?” she asks.
“Yeah, many times. It has the best burgers.”
She’s looking at the menu, her eyes big at the portion size. “You’ll have to roll me out.” Just then, the music lowers a little and we don’t have to yell at each other. When I came to pick her up tonight, she’d been crying. I’ll try to do anything to make her forget what tomorrow truly is.
Our server comes over, kneeling, flirting with me. “You both are a beautiful couple.” Yet, her arm is all over mine.
“Um, listen, bitch, you better step back a bit,” Holland begins because the server thinks Holland is mine, yet, she’s fruitlessly flirting with me.
She smiles at Holland, too. “Oh, honey, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to overstep, as a matter of fact, I’d take you both in the mix.” My mouth falls when Holland stops to process all she’s said. “Sorry, honey, I wasn’t coming onto just your husband, I hadn’t gotten to you yet, sugar.” And she winks at Holland. “So, what would you two beautiful people like to drink?”
After she takes our order, Holland twists her body toward me, and she’s somewhere between hysterics and anger. “Hey, wife?” I ask, going off of the server’s assumptions of us. “You got pretty territorial there,” I tease, loving it, seeing green in her actions.
“Well, she assumed we were a couple and she blatantly flirted with you so I had to stake my fictional claim.”
“Sure, whatever you have to tell yourself.”
By the way her jaw is almost sitting on the table, she’s still a little shell-shocked. “Did that just happen?” she asks. I nod yes and she has her phone whipped out so fast. “Wait until I tell Teagan. She’s going to flip her lid. According to her, she’s the only girl who can hit on me.” Even in the absurdness of it all, I’m glad our server has given Holland something worth laughing about. She surely will need it to get through tomorrow.

I stop to let this sink in. I’m a father without a son? Is this possible? My lips tremble at the thought of the last time I’d seen him only a month ago. He never brought Holland, wanting to spend as much time together, just him and me. If I’d known it was all the time I’d had with him, would I have held him longer? Done anything different? It doesn’t matter, not now that I essentially have my father status stripped from me.

As if staring at Dear Dad isn’t enough to rip my heart out, I begin to devour the letter and his last words.

Dear Dad,
Fuck, If you’re reading this, it means I’m gone. I had one dream, growing old with Holland. Death won’t stop me from providing for my wife.  And because you’re the best man I know, what I’m about to ask—my last request—I know you’ll do. Please take care of Holland. Take her back to California with you. It’s a lot—I know. But, I’m placing my most precious possession in your hands.

See, we don’t have much saved and the military won’t let Holland stay in government quarters after my death. I have very little to provide for her if I die. I have my SGLI (life insurance), but it’s not enough after she pays for school. But she’s talented in design. Please help her get on her feet. Love her like you love me. She has nothing to go back to in Virginia. Her family will suck the little life insurance she has of mine dry.

Mom would have felt so abandoned if I went straight to you from high school. But if I trust anyone with Holland, it’s you. 

One of my regrets in life is not fighting Mom to come live with you. By the time I knew I could stand up to her, I had met Holland. Please don’t tell Mom this. She tried, I know she did. She loves me, this I never doubted. But I wish I knew you better, Dad.

Please know that every moment we had together, I treasured. I know that’s not a real dude-like thing to say, but I did. You made me the man who Holland fell in love with. Let her know when she falls in love again, it’s okay! I want everything for her that we couldn’t have together.

And, Dad, I know Mom did you wrong. You never made me choose, but it made you cynical. That’s why you’ve never committed to anyone else. Please, find a woman you love and live the life I couldn’t.

You will always be a dad—my dad.

EXCERPT 

(Daimen’s POV)
I woke suddenly to Arden’s touch. “I need you so fucking much, right now, honey.”

Arden’s grin told me exactly what he wanted—pure fucking. I took him by the hand and led him to the couch that was in our room close to the foot of the bed. “Thank fuck! I told you I wanted to partake in a little bit of voyeurism.”

“You’re a dirty man, you know, and I can’t get enough of you.” Arden grinned. I took the lube next to the end table by our couch. “You’re my life, Daimen. It’ll always be you and me,” he said, holding my face. “And when Elliot is ours, my love for you won’t change, but seeing you the way you were with her tonight will make me love you more—kind and sweet and so not like the hardass I fell in love with.”

My phone had not stopped buzzing all night long. With my Shiraz as my only company, the beautiful voice of Norah Jones as my backdrop, and the memories of Daimen and Arden together in their office, I stared aimlessly at the same scuff mark on my wall. Hell, shit and about a dozen other curse words flitted through my mind at Daimen taking Arden over his desk. Yep, of course, Daimen would top Arden. That was not surprising nor was how my body reacted to them. Two hot men together. Forget Pornhub, I’d just replay them in my mind forever.

When the ring tone assigned to Andrew started to chime, I reached for my cell. Freaking hell, I had twenty missed calls from Arden and Daimen.

“Ell, you okay?” No hellos or formalities, Andrew worked on facts, and in his tone, that was what he was after.
“Hell, I’m not even sure how to answer you but you were right—Arden told me tonight that they are looking to add a woman to their committed relationship.” I waited for some sort of reaction from my best friend, but I got none, at all. “I shouldn’t be blindsided especially after I walked in on them fucking like rabbits in the office. But I am. I thought I’d dodged this bullet. But then, he told me they wanted me. Shit, Andrew. Can you believe this?”

Andrew had not made a peep or sound at my revelation. Looking at the phone to make sure we were still connected, I finally heard him. “First, fuck, was it hot, them fucking like that?”

“Shit Andrew, you’re not helping,” I screamed in the phone, and though I wouldn’t admit it to my best friend, it was hotter than hell.
