She turned in my direction, and I saw the moment it registered. The hitch in her step, the narrowing of her eyes, the slight purse in her scarlet red lips.

“You,” she whispered.

Everything stopped. All eyes turned in my direction. The temperature in the room with that one hushed word from her went from cordial to downright glacial.

“Oh, shit,” I muttered under my breath. She crossed her arms tightly over her chest. The chest I’d ogled while she shoved cupcakes at me.

There was absolutely no part of this that could end well.

Well, let’s see … I’m a wife and a mother. If the things that I write bring a smile to someone’s face, then I’ve done my job. I am obsessed with Outlander (both the books and the show). I’m almost exclusively a romance reader, which means some people will never consider me a literary snob. If I could meet one historical figure, it would be Jane Austen. I received my Bachelors in Public Relations and worked in health care marketing before I had my babies. I hate Twitter. I do it, but I hate it. Also, if you want to get on my good side, bring me wine and I’ll love you forever.

This contemporary romcom had all the right fix-er-up components for a perfect summer read. Beaches, a hot man, the right amount of HGTV references and a goat. Why does a goat make a good summer read? When you meet Jean Claude Van Ram you’ll just know.

Ashton was on the brink of losing her the B&B that her grandmother had run until she died and left it to her two grandchildren. Filled with nostalgia Ashton wanted to save the home and bring it back to its prime and glory. With its prime beach location her brother only wanted to sell the money pit and turn it into glorious condos. Heaped in debt up to her eyeballs Ashton reached out to the YouTube sensation “The Right Stud” in hopes that he could save her B&B from ruin. When Jax  Roland shows up eager to help she never dreamed of feeling an instant connection to the hot male offering up his services. She needs a miracle worker not a quick roll in the sack. Only why does he have to be so easy on the eyes?

Jax needs a win and he needs it big. When Ashton Hall contacts him to renovate her B&B he sees potential to elevate his show to the next level. What she doesn’t know is that he’d be using her B&B episode to get him to the next level, but what is that saying, omission isn’t lying, it just isn’t stating the entire truth. Things will be fine.

Will these two be able to save The Conch Shell and build on both of their dreams? Sometimes life doesn’t work out just the way you want, especially when there is a goat involved, but maybe if you throw in a foul-mouthed parrot he may steal your bacon. Don’t think too hard about it, instead buy The Right Stud and enjoy all the fun yourself.

It’s too cold to make her take her clothes off. Even though I know she’d do that if I asked her to. I can already feel the chill of her beneath me. But my body heat will help. Will protect her from the cold.

“Listen, babe—”
She holds up her hand like a stop sign and for some reason, having her interrupt doesn’t bother me.
“Did you just babe me?” Her question is all sass.
“Sure did, sweetheart. Call ‘em like I see ‘em. Don’t pretend to be offended. We both know why you’re over here talking to me.”
Her face turns an adorable shade of pink. “First, stop with the nicknames. Second, are you for real? What the hell is wrong with you?”
“I don’t see any issue. You’re the one disrupting my quiet evening.”
“What the… I mean, seriously? I want to sit down and this is the only available spot. You honestly think I came over here to hit on you?”
Her ridiculous question doesn’t deserve a response. My glare matches hers as I silently explain my opinion on the matter. My expression must tell her everything she needs to know.
“Wow, you’re an asshole.”
“You’re the third woman to call me that tonight. Be careful, I might get a complex.”
“Aw, poor baby. I’d hate to dent your fragile ego,” she snips with a curl in her lip.
“There’s nothing fragile about me. Don’t worry. I’m hard and solid. Wanna feel?” I ask and pat my abs.
She nods to my hands. “No, thanks. I’d hate for you to rub off on me.”
“Does the grease under my nails bother you? Princess is afraid of getting a little dirty?”
“Do you get a rise out of being mean?”
I lean against the bar and cross my arms. “I don’t get many complaints. You’re not from around here, so I’ll fill you in—the ladies love me.”
“Pretty sure I saw Barbie McCleveage storm off after chatting with you. She didn’t look too satisfied.”
“Now who’s using nicknames? Jealous much?”
“Hardly,” she huffs.
I smirk before checking out her rack, being extremely obvious about it. Pushing her buttons takes away the tension from earlier, replacing it with a surprising ease. Fighting with her is the most nonsexual fun I’ve had with a woman in a long time. Wonder how she’d react if I called her ma’am.
“All right, all right. You’ve broken me down. I was set on not having any company tonight, but for you, I’ll make an exception. If you insist on standing here, blabbing away, I’ve got far better uses for that luscious mouth. My place isn’t too far away,” I suggest while waggling my brows. My behavior is over the top, but what can I say? She’s bringing out the best in me.
Her lips part in shock. This stranger just stares at me, and I’m sure she’s about to turn away… or slap me. Either way, mission accomplished.
But this chick is full of surprises.

I’m feeling warm and relaxed when I finally get out of the bathtub. I usually don’t walk around the apartment unless I’m covered up, but since Trevor isn’t here I just wrap a towel around me. My hair is piled up messily on my head, and I’m carrying my bath salts and soap.
I open the bathroom door and nearly run smack into Trevor.
I give a little squeal and immediately look to make sure my towel is in place. “I didn’t know you were home.”
“I just got back.”
“I was in the bath.”
“I know that.” He’s looking very sexy in that end-of-the-day way he has. Five-o’clock shadow. Slightly loosened tie and collar. Half-lowered eyelids.
God, the man is hot.
“I could smell you as soon as I walked in the door,” he adds, the slightly rough words doing nothing for my flustered state of mind.
“You smelled me?” I’m thinking all kinds of things at the moment, and none of them are suitable to share with the man in front of me.
He reaches over, and I swallow over a quick intake of breath. I think he’s going to touch me. I want him to touch me.
He touches my bath salts instead. “This stuff you put in your bath. I smelled it as soon as I walked in, so I knew you were in the bath.”
“Oh.”
It’s perfectly logical. And kind of a disappointment.
His hand moves from the bath salts, and his fingertips slowly trail up my towel to the bare skin at my collarbone. It’s barely a touch, but it makes my skin flush and a pulsing begin between my legs.
“What did you think?” he asks, his voice a little thicker than normal.
“What did I think about what?” I have no idea what he’s talking about. My brain isn’t exactly functioning at the moment.
“What did you think I smelled?”
“I… I didn’t know.”
“I see.”
It feels like he sees.
It feels like he sees all of me.
I’m staring at his plum-colored tie because it’s safer than meeting his eyes right now. I don’t want him to know how I’m feeling, how his touch, his presence is affecting me.
“Melissa?”
“What?”
“Are you planning to move out of the doorway? I need to use the bathroom.”
And that’s like a load of bricks on my breathlessness. I’m able to meet his gaze now with a cool expression as I step out of the doorway.
I’m on my way out of the room when he says, “We can return to this particular conversation a little later in bed if you want.”
Damn it.
The asshole knows exactly what I was feeling just now.
Fortunately I’m not feeling it anymore.
“I don’t think so.”
“You sure?”
I turn my head and see him smirking at me, as if he thinks he’s already won.
He hasn’t won.
“Yes, I’m sure. The problem is that any kind of conversation with you involves your infuriating personality, and that just doesn’t work for me.”
“I think it does.”
“You think wrong. And I thought you had to go to the bathroom.”
“I do. We’ll resume this conversation at a later date.”

I don’t want to talk about that look. In fact, up until ten seconds ago, I’d been doing a bang-up job of ensuring we haven’t had the opportunity to discuss it all evening. It’s a big ballroom, and if Greg happened to be at the north end, I managed to stay south. The few times I couldn’t stop our paths from crossing, I made sure to pull someone, anyone, along with me, thus ensuring the conversation stayed far, far away from the look that got away from me.
Until now, it had been working. Unfortunately, my conversation buffer just saw her fiancé come in, and the little traitor sprinted off, leaving me staring up at Greg. Nothing to distract me from this gorgeous man in his tuxedo and the trouble I’m having keeping my eyes to myself.
I’m surrounded by good-looking men on a regular basis, and it never gets to me. But with Greg, I can barely breathe. I can hardly look at him without heat spilling into my cheeks, and as to tearing my eyes away? Forget it.
Which is crazy. I’m not fifteen. This isn’t my first crush.
It’s not a crush at all.
It’s Greg, one of my oldest friends and the guy I just promised I wouldn’t objectify tonight. We’re friends. Just friends.
With no more hookups between us.
No more kissing.
No more flirting.
I shake my head, mentally amending the no-more-flirting clause, because this is Greg. Flirting is like breathing for him—an involuntary response, and one I sort of cherish.
But no more staring!
“Thought we discussed you avoiding me,” he says.
Don’t look at him. Don’t look at him. Don’t—
God, he’s so handsome it hurts.
A waiter passes by, and I swipe a glass of white wine from his tray. “I’m not.”
He lets out a low laugh that slides right through to the deepest parts of me.
“Glad to hear it.” He steps closer, ducking his head so his next words are directed at me and me alone. We’re standing in the middle of hundreds of people, but when his eyes are on me like that, a glint of amusement edging a more serious intent, it feels like we’re alone. “Should we discuss that look?”
My cheeks burn hotter, and I toss back half my glass in one swallow. “It was just one look.”
I’m such a liar.
He laughs again, letting up on the eye contact as he surveys the crowd. “There’s that just word again. I’m starting to think maybe you don’t think it means what it really means. And P.S. … it wasn’t just one.”
Geeze. This guy. “Greg, we’re past it. Everything is fine.”
So long as I don’t look at any part of him for more than a fraction of a second, we’re totally good.
“You’re sure?”
No. But I’m subscribing to the fake-it-’til-you-make-it school of thought here. “Absolutely.”
He rolls his shoulder in my peripheral vision. “Well, that’s a relief.”
“Good.” It’s definitely good. Right? I hazard another look at his face. “But out of curiosity, can I ask why?”
The corner of his mouth curves, and I feel the tug of it all the way through me.
“Because if you weren’t past it—if, for example, another one of those rogue looks got away from you while we were in the midst of this crowd—I could see where that might be a problem.”
I force myself to focus on the orchestra set up across the room. Only Greg isn’t done.
“But even if by some miracle they don’t catch the look in your eyes, and I do… then we’d have to worry about them seeing the look in mine. The one that says it’s only going to be a matter of seconds before I’ve got one hand in your hair and the other finding out what’s under that incredible dress.”
I try to swallow, but my throat makes a dry clicking sound, so I drain my glass.
Taking the empty from my hand, Greg returns it to a passing waiter.
He’s amused, the sexy jerk. He knew exactly what kind of effect that casual reference to getting under my dress would have.
“Good thing there’s zero chance of another one of those looks getting away from me. Ever.”
Okay, ever is probably a stretch, but he doesn’t have to snort about it. Cocky bastard.
I should let it go. Let him have his little laugh.
Taking the drink from his hand, I tap my index finger against the condensation-covered glass before bringing it to my lips. Club soda and lime.
It’s not strong enough to justify what blurts past my lips, but I can’t stop myself. “So you don’t need to give what kind of tiny and delicate I’ve got going on under this dress another thought.”
His body stiffens, and his eyes cut to my chest. He’s built like a superhero, but despite his apparent laser focus, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t actually have X-ray vision.
All I wanted was the satisfaction of seeing him squirm. Maybe to gloat a little.
But neither one of us is the type to relinquish a win so easily.
“Jules, you’re going to have to be careful. Tiny and delicate sounds like it might not survive these rough hands of mine.”
My breath catches as need spears through me, and my center goes hot and liquid.
I open my mouth, wanting to say something sharp that puts him in his place. But I can’t make a sound. I can’t think about anything but the snap of elastic and my panties falling apart in his big… rough… hands.
Greg seems to be waiting for the comeback that isn’t coming too.
The seconds stretch and pull.
Our eyes meet and, suddenly, that smug satisfaction washes clean off his face as his nostrils flare and his eyes turn to midnight. I’m pretty sure this is the look he warned me about.
“Aww, fuck. Now you’ve done it, Jules.”
I take a shaky breath. “I know.”

Part of the Donut Collaboration for National Donut Day, Donut Leave Me is a short, sweet story that focuses more on the relationship between daddy and daughter than a HEA love type of relationship.

Forest works at Belladonna restaurant as a pastry chef and doesn’t meet his daughter until she is eight years old. He had a one night stand years ago which resulted in the birth of his daughter, Ella. When a woman shows up on his doorstep and finally reveals to Forest that he has a daughter, only at the time when she is in the final stages of cancer and realizes that she can no longer care for her daughter. Selfish, sure, but Forest quickly comes to grips with what she did vs. being mad at her when he hears her reasons.

The story escalates quickly leaving Forest to raise his grieving daughter alone. Luckily Forest has a pseudo family with everyone at the restaurant who is willing to step in and help out. With such a heavy storyline and this being a short story, there is little room for romance. There is a spark between the bakery owner, Jax, and Forest, but perhaps with a longer book this could have been explored deeper.

I love the relationship Forest builds with his daughter, but it would have been nice to have a bit more love for a romance book.

This was a couldn’t-put-down-sizzling-buildup-yummy-kind-of-read.

I don’t know if it was the early summer heat, the holiday weekend, or that Lauren Blakely just gets better with each book I read.  Part-Time Lover checked off all of my boxes for a cozy up on the couch and do nothing kind of day. Christian and Elise were a fabulous pair and I loved reading every minute of their story.

Elise has been hurt by love before. Married and now widowed the walls around her heart are tall and thick. It doesn’t mean she doesn’t know how to have fun, it’s quite the opposite. Her friends adore that she lives by a carpe diem philosophy, but living life to its fullest doesn’t mean she has to fall in love. She has her career on full speed and nothing stands in her way when she wants to achieve her goals.
